Windows Vista Font Mangement?

I just transitioned from WinXP and using ATM deluxe to Windows Vista. I've got hundreds of Postscript, TrueType, and OpenType font variations that I use for any number of design projects which I absolutely need to manage somehow. I've been reading the threads about why ATM was discontinued, that all fonts can be installed in the Windows Fonts folder, etc. However, that does not solve the issue of actually managing the fonts (custom grouping them, turning them 'on' and 'off', viewing samples, etc). While ATM wasn't the best, it was the simplest to use. There are a number of font management utilities out there, my question is... Which Font Management software is the easiest to use, most reliable (stablest), and best for managing fonts on Windows?
thanks,
Kathleen

I do not use a font manager, I keep my fonts on a separate partition and add them to Vista with the font manager, but I deselect 'copy font'.
Using a separate partition means that the fonts will never fragment or get corrupted unless the disk goes.
I have 2600+ fonts active at all times and it does not create a problem.

  • "Unable to create font" error when starting After Effects CS4 (Windows Vista)

    Hi all
    I have read a hundred posts about the "unable to create font" message that appears when running After Effects in both CS4 and CS5 versions.
    On MAC, it seems that installing the Verdana fonts family is enough.
    On my PC running Windows Vista, i tried unsuccessfully :
    - uninstalled and reinstalled After Effects
    - installed all the fonts of the Adobe Font Folio v11
    - looked for the "AdobeFnt.lst" to delete it, found no such file in my whole hard drive
    - changed my system language to English (USA)
    Other CS4 softwares work.
    What can i do?

    See this page for some additional information about this error.
    > I forgot to mention that i also installed the 9.0.2 update. Didn't work either!
    You should also install the After Effects CS4 (9.0.3) update.

  • Problem with Windows Vista Server 2008 - Font characters replaced with square blocks on login screen

    Hi!  Last week, I set up a server for a client (Windows Vista Server 2008).  Everything was working fine until this week when I did a remote login, and the server's screen shows all blocks instead of character (ie. "Administrator" shows up as Rectangular blocks) - and when I type in the password box, my characters come out the same blocks. The computer lets me login like this but then when the desktop displays, all texts is Blocks - like the windows default font is missing.
    Anybody else run into this mystery and is there a fix?
    Thanks.

    Hello,
    Based on my experience, this issue might be caused by compatibility issues of video card driver and language options settings.
    I’d like to suggest you try the following steps to fix the issue.
    1.    Please check whether you have installed correct video card drivers on both client and server machines. You’d better download the latest drivers from Video card manufacture and reinstall the drivers on both of the machines.
    2.    Please confirm whether the regional and language options settings on client and server machines are the same. If not, please temporarily change the settings on two machines to be the same and have another test.
    3.    If you use some third-party remote desktop connection tools to connect to the server, please have another try with Windows build-in remote desktop connection.
    I hope this helps, thanks.

    Neo Zhu

  • Windows Vista wont install Ipod drivers

    OK I NEED HELP....
    I have Windows Vista and I am trying to install my iPod Nano, but everytime I plug my iPod in it ask me to insert the CD that came with it. As I don't have a CD I just click to install drivers automatically. Than it gives me an error saying 'unable to install drivers'. The divers do show up in the device manger under- other devices but there is a little warning sign next to it. So I right click on it and update driver, which it then tells me that it can't update driver. I have the latest version on iTunes and Quicktime, and I have also done a restore on my pc. Spoken to Apple 4 times!!! got no where with them. My iPod works fine on Windows XP machine, but not my Windows Vista. Has anyone else had any troubles with Vista??

    I'm not sure my problem with Vista is the same. New computer with Vista, and I'm trying to transfer my library from old computer to new one. I loaded latest version of iTunes. When I put in my apple ID, my acct balance and items in my shopping cart appeared. When I connect my iPod, it is recognized.
    I found an article that gave two options for copying library to new computer. One was to use backup discs to RESTORE, and the other was to use the iPod as a hard drive. It says that it will ask if I want to restore when I insert backup disc, but it does not ask. I tried Import, but tht didn't work either. When I connect my iPod, it doesn't copy the contents from there either. It only gives me the option of erasing iPod and loading what is on new library (which is only about 12 songs). I get a msg that I am synced to another library and can only be synced to one. I still got that msg after I deauthorized the old one.
    Any suggestions on how to load music onto new library?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Why edge code cc is not working in windows vista 32 bit OS

    I had tried it lot to install but nothing happens so pl guide me.

    Hi Sameer,
    There's no version of Windows Vista that is supported, regardless of service packs.  You can always upgrade to Windows 7, though.
    Your other option is to use Brackets, the open source editor that Edge Code is based on.  It still supports Vista for now.  The downside is that Brackets lacks some features of Edge Code: Kuler integration, Edge Inspect integration, and Edge Web Fonts code hints -- although all of those except Kuler are offered as optional Brackets extensions too (you just have to install them).
    Hope that helps,
    - Peter

  • Forms 10g installed and running on Windows Vista

    <font color=0000FF>Update 12-Dec-2008: </font>Oracle has published NOTE 559067.1 -- How to Install Developer Suite 10.1.2.0.2 - hence 10.1.2.3 - on Windows Vista, 24-OCT-2008 with some installation help.
    <font color=0000FF>Update 07-July-2008: </font> Added text at the bottom showing how to find patchsets for Forms 10g.
    <font color=0000FF>Update 29-May-2008: </font> This thread was started in November, 2007.  In January, 2008, Oracle released Patch 3 for Forms 10g, which makes Forms 10g compatible with Windows Vista.  As time permits I'll try to keep the information in this post up to date.   Updated information will be inserted <font color=0000FF>as blue text.
    </font>
    <font color=0000FF>Original message begins here:</font>
    This is a second thread I am posting to outline the steps I have used to install Forms on a Windows Vista Home Basic laptop.   The other thread describes installing Forms 6i:
          Forms 6i installed and running on Windows Vista
    Please read through the initial part of that post for the background.  I realize Oracle has not certified Forms 10g to run on Vista, but the time has come for my associates and I to upgrade our old computers to new desktop/laptop platforms, and I would hate to acquire XP machines and be stuck with them for the next 5 years.  <font color=0000FF>(Note: Since first posting this message, Oracle has certified Forms 10g Patch 3 (version 10.1.2.3.0) to run on Vista)</font>  So after another person informed me that he had Forms installed and running on Vista, I went ahead and bought one.  I found that as long as I set the compatibility mode to run Forms programs as Windows XP (and a few other changes), Forms 6i and 10g run quite satisfactorily.
    <font color=0000FF>Update 29-Jan-2008: </font> Unfortunately, it turns out that the Forms 10g Builder running on Vista <font color=0000FF>had</font> a major flaw:   If you try to develop a form, the Builder will crash if you try to compile a procedure that calls another procedure in the form that has errors.  The problem is reported and described in this thread:  Error compiling a form under Vista
    <font color=0000FF>Update 12-Mar-2008: </font> Installing Patch 3 on Vista does not help with this problem -- the Builder still crashes in the same situation.
    <font color=0000FF>Update 25-July-2008: </font> Applying Patch 7047034 has corrected the problem.   See this link within this thread:   Forms 10g: Installing Patch 7047034 on Windows Vista
    Webutil note:  I am stuck in a Forms 6i client/server world, so all my forms must run in that environment.   Therefore I have not used any Webutil software, and I do not know whether that part will run under Vista.
    Internet Explorer note:  On Windows Vista, IE CANNOT be used to run the Web Forms runtime.  It crashes immediately when you try to run a form.  Instead, I can use either Firefox (Firefox 2, Firefox 3.0 Crashes with Forms 10g) or Netscape, as long as they are set to disable java.  <font color=0000FF>[ Correction:   IE7 on Vista now runs the Forms 10g forms.   You just need to add "?config=jpi" to the browser URL when starting the Web Forms session.   More IE/Vista info: [url=http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=642973]Vista JInitiator Problem ]</font>

    Oracle Developer Suite Installation Guide:
        http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25016_07//doc/dl/core/B16012_04/toc.htm
    The steps below are those I followed to install Forms 10g (version 10.1.2.0.2)
    I.  Preliminary system changes in Windows
    When I started installing, I got the following error message:    Install has encountered an error while
        attempting to verify your virtual memory settings.
        Please verify that the sum of the initial sizes of
        the paging files is at least 256 MB.To fix this:  Go to Control Panel, System and Maintenance, View amount of RAM and processor speed (under "System"),
    Advanced system settings (in left "Tasks" column), Advanced tab, Settings (under "performance"), Advanced tab:
    Virtual Memory shows a "Total paging file size for all drives: 2337MB.
    Click "change", Uncheck "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives"
    Click "custom size:", set Initial size to: 2048, Max to 4096
    Click set button, then OK, get message:The changes you have made require you to restart your computer before
       they can take effect.Restart the computer.
    II.  Installing Forms 10g
    1.  Download two files from Oracle:
        ds_windows_x86_101202_disk1.zip (626,122,752 bytes)
        ds_windows_x86_101202_disk2.zip (236,880,881 bytes)
    2a.  Before extracting, it is a good idea to shut down any virus protection software.  It can sometimes prevent some files from being created.
    2b.  Extract both into the C:\oracle directory, as disk1 and disk2.
    3.  Using Windows Explorer, change the properties of setup.exe in the C:\oracle\disk1 folder.  (In windows explorer, right click, properties, Compatibility tab.)   Change the compatibility to run as Windows XP (Service Pack 2).
    4.  Right click setup.exe and click "Run as administrator"
    5.  Select "Installation type" = Complete (1.11 GB)
    6.  Received this message:Windows Firewall has blocked this program from
    accepting incoming network connections.  If you
    unblock this program, it will be unblocked on all
    public networks that you connect to.
    C:\users\steve\appdata\local\temp\orainstall...
      2007-10-29_11-59-08am\jre\1.4.2\bin\javaw.exeI clicked "Unblock"
    7.  Received this message:  "Provide outgoing mail server information"  I entered the smtp mail server that I use.
    8.  A summary screen displayed showing 274 products under New Installations.
    I clicked the Install button.
    9.   Received this message:  You can find a log of this install session at:
    C:\Program Files\Oracle\Inventory\logs\installActions2007.....log
    10.  The installation completed.  Installed products shows Forms 10.1.2.0.2
    III.  After the install completed
    1.  Create a shortcut to the Forms 10 Builder on the Desktop.
    On the shortcut line, after the .exe, add *userid=userxxx/pwxxx@orcl* so Builder automatically logs into 10g database.  If you do step 4 below (creating an easily-accessible folder to use for your forms) change the "Start in" path on the shortcut so it points to that folder.  Otherwise, Forms Builder will not find referenced objects and PLL libraries when it opens a form.  Also do the same on the Start, All Programs shortcut for the Forms Builder.
    Edit:  After applying Patch 3, the following steps are not necessary.
    Set its compatibility to Windows XP.
    Set checkbox: "Run this program as as an administrator."  (Without this, FormBuilder will NOT open a PLL library.)
    Click the "Show settings for all users" and change values there.
    2.  Copy "Start OC4J Instance" icon to desktop.
    Set its compatibility to Windows XP.
    The first time it runs, I got a Windows popup to unblock program named Java.  I clicked "Unblock".
    3.  tnsnames.ora:
    Rename C:\oracle\DevSuiteHome_1\network\admin\tnsnames.ora
    to:  tnsnames_orig.ora
    If you created a tnsnames.ora file for Forms 6i, just copy it to the path above.  If not, do this:
    Create a new tnsnames.ora file, copying entries old file on my old laptop, which contains all the connections I use.
    Delete the old laptop entry, replace with new entry for the new local ORCL connection on new laptop from tnsnames file renamed from the c:\oracle\... ...\10.2.0\db_1\ path.
    4.  Optional:  Create an easily accessible folder to store fmb files:
    C:\users\steve\.1\fmb10
    You don't really want to keep drilling into C:\oracle\DevSuiteHome_1\forms, and then find your .fmb file among the several dozen oracle-supplied files.
    To create a folder named .1, you have to open a CMD.exe (Windows DOS) window, and type the Make Directory command:
    MD .1
    That will create the folder within the current directory -- mine defaults to C:\users\steve
    Note:  If you also need to use Forms 6i like me, DO NOT EVER open a .fmb file in the Forms 10 Builder from the Forms 6i folder.  If you compile it, or even worse, save the .fmb, Forms 6i *cannot ever* access the file.  Instead, always use the File Manager (Windows Explorer) to copy the fmb from the fmb6 folder into the fmb10 location.
    5.  Change the Forms 10g Default.env file using a text editor.
    This file replaces all the settings originally written to the Windows Registry (GREAT idea, Oracle!  I hate the registry.)  No more Regedit.  The default.env file is located at: (DevSuiteHome_1 path)\forms\server\default.env
    Locate line with:  FORMS_PATH= and add:
        ;C:\users\steve\.1\fmb10
    Add a new line:
    FORMS_MMAP=FALSE
    The above allows compiling an fmx while the form is running.
    Add a new line:
    FORMS_ROWLOCK_OPTIMIZATION=FALSE
    (This fixes Oracle bug number 3949854, which prevents automatic skipping if the same value is typed over another value. TAR 4806199.993 Automatic Skip failure...)  See bug 4068896
    Add a new Line:
    FORMS_RESTRICT_ENTER_QUERY=False
    This allows use of Query-Where window in enter query, after entering a colon in any input field.  Without this, Forms returns FRM-40367: Invalid criteria in field nnn in example record.  Oracle shut it down to prevent "sql injection" attacks.
    6.  Jiniator setup:
    Run file jinit.exe in C:\oracle\DevSuiteHime_1\jinit\jinit.exe
    It installs Jinitiator 1.3.1.22.
    I installed it in C:\oracle\JInitiator 1.3.1.22\
    For Firefox, make sure a copy of file \bin\NPJinit13122.dll resides in   C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins.
    For Netscape, the path is:  C:\Program Files\Netscape\Navigator 9\plugins
    7.   Browser settings
    See the note above about using Firefox 2 and not Firefox 3!
    In Firefox 2 go to:  Tools-> Options-> Content
    Uncheck the "Enable Java" checkbox
    --Firefox terminates if this is not done!
    Note:  After my system automatically installed updates to either java or Firefox, re-check the "Enable Java" setting.  I am suspicious that one of these installs re-enables java in the browser.
    Also note:  some web sites cannot display properly if java is disabled.  Example:  U.S. time website: http://www.time.gov   Use Internet Explorer to view these.
    In Netscape make the same changes as Firefox.  Without disabling java, it also terminates when you try to run a form.
    Creating a url to use in the browser:
    Try this:
        http://127.0.0.1:8889/forms/frmservlet
    If it does not work, change the 8889 port number as follows:
    Open file:  C:\oracle\DevSuiteHome_1\install\portlist.ini
    Note the number in line:
    Oracle Developer Suite HTTP port = 8889
    Use the number as the port number.
    You can also change the 127.0.0.1 to the computer name:
    Control Panel, System and Maintenance, See the name of this computer (under "System").  Mine is "steve-PC"
    So the alternate URL is:     http://steve-PC:8889/forms/frmservlet
    To try out the URL, start the OC4J instance set up above.  Then start either Netscape or Firefox, and enter the URL.  You should get a welcome screen.
    If the above URL works, start up the Forms Builder, and open Edit, Preferences.  On the General tab, uncheck the "Build before running" check box (optional).  On the Runtime tab, set the "Application Server URL to the url above.
    To run a real form, add this to the URL after frmservlet, (with no spaces):
        ?form={formname}&userid={userxxx}/{passwordyyy}@{connect-string}
    but replace the parts in curly braces with the appropriate values.  Example:
        http://127.0.0.1:8889/forms/frmservlet?form=ABC&userid=abc123/zyx@orcl
    Setting up Forms Builder to directly run a form in the browser:
    Run the Forms Builder.  Go to Edit, Preferences, Runtime tab.
    Set the Application Server URL to:
        http://127.0.0.1:8889/forms/frmservlet
    (or use whatever URL string you developed above)
    Set the Web Browser Location to:
        "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Navigator 9\navigator.exe"
    (or an equivalent to run the Firefox browser).
    8.  FORMSWEB.CFG file changes
    The file is located at:
    C:\ORA_DS_101202\DevSuiteHome_1\forms\server\formsweb.cfg
    I changed the following two lines in the file, but these are my personal preferences:
    separateFrame=true
    lookandfeel=Generic
    9.  FMRWEB.RES file changes
    For Oracle help:  Enabling Key Mappings
    The file fmrweb.res defines actions (triggers that run) when a function key is pressed while running Forms.  The one released has unix-style key mapping, but I prefer keys originally mapped for Windows PC Forms users. There is a fmrpcweb.res in the same folder that can be renamed to fmrweb.res.
    In the C:\oracle\DevSuiteHome_1\forms path, I renamed fmrweb.res to fmrweb_orig.res.
    I have a file that I prefer to use, so I put it into the folder as fmrweb.res. The contents are listed below. It is organized so the most important keys are listed alphabetically at the top (URFD column is the sort column), followed by a group of less-important keys.  These are keys that are available to users, but they either would not use, or are disabled within most forms.  The URFD column in the second set starts with a hex A0 character, which is a high-order space, so collates after normal alphabetic characters.  (Note: If you want to copy the text below and use it, the hex A0 character has been changed by the forum software to a space. So you would need to use a text editor with hexadecimal character capabilities to replace the space with the original character. )
    My file has special keys defined for F2 (I use it for a debugging Key-F2 trigger in my forms), and a "Cursor to Home" F12 function. All the rest are pretty much the same as in the released fmrpcweb.res file, only mine are organized alphabetically on the URFD column.
    The Web Forms fmrweb.res file is editable using any programming editor (NOT MS Word!!!). The old Client/Server key mapping file, fmrusw.res, could only be changed using the Oracle Terminal program (and it is a pain to use).
    Here is the main part of my fmrweb.res file:#

    I followed your instructions and installed Developer Suite 10G on Windows Vista Home Premium edition. I have Oracle 11G DB running on the same machine.
    Two points, Steve:
    1. When I tried to set the maximum virtual memory to 6110 an error message displayed from Windows and told me that I can't set the maximum virtual memory to more than 4096. I set it to 4090 and it worked and I got nothing wrong during the installation process.
    2. After installing JInitiator and disabling Java on Firefox I called the http://127.0.0.1:8889/forms/frmservlet page and everything seemed to be OK because the Oracle Forms Services logo appeared and then a successful installation message appeared , but as I clicked (ok) to continue a gray screen appeared inside the browser (like the one displayed when you try to run a Java applet inside a browser) and then I wait to death till something appears but sadly nothing. I just get a blank gray screen inside my Firefox browser.
    Do you have any idea what to do to solve the problem?

  • JDeveloper 10g video problems with Windows Vista

    Hi,
    I'm using JDev 10g 10.1.3.3 over Windows Vista with Aero active. Since I started using Vista, I have always had problems with JDev. First, the fonts in the JDev panels would mess up and the scrolling would not work well. I made some changes in the way JDev uses the JDK, I don't remember exactly what I did, but I think I made the whole JDev environment to use a newer JDK, which is not engouraged/supported by Oracle. Since then, the scrolling problem was solved. But When I run my app, Aero stops working.
    Is there a way to make JDev 10g work perfectly with Vista?
    (No, I'm not willing to migrate to 11g, for several reasons, so I need to stick to 10g for now).
    Thanks!

    Using JDeveloper on Vista - some tips

  • JRE1.6 in Windows Vista for Swing based application

    Hi,
    I am running a Swing based and applet based application in Windows VISTA using JRE 1.6_U13. The text font is appearing bold in JRE 1.6_U13 whereas it is appearing normal while using JRE 1.5, though the style of the Font
    is "SansSerif", PLAIN and size 12 for both JRE 1.6 and JRE 1.5.
    Reason for the Issue:
    Swings follows the concept of taking the display values from the Windows UIManager(). The UIManager consists of keys and values. The values for the keys change from OS to OS. As a result, if the UIManager key values are not overridden with the customized values, the display will change from OS to OS. Hence the issue has occurred.
    Analysis:
    Case-1:
    1.     CALM is setting the font style to “Font("SansSerif", Font.PLAIN, 12)”.
    2.     This font is being set to the Label and Text components in swings.
    3.     The font class consists of Font.PLAIN argument whose value is 0 as per the java API.
    4.     This value can’t be changed.
    5.     Hence we couldn’t solve.
    Case-2:
    1.     We tried to get the key value for the key “Label.font” and tried to override its value.
    2.     But then the issue is with the Font.Plain which is one of the arguments in Font object.
    3.     Hence couldn’t achieve it.
    Case-3:
    1.     We thought of creating a new font where in we can have control over the weight and width of the text. Then set this font to respective key of the UIManager.
    2.     Here the weight indicates the bold thickness. As a result of which we thought of changing the weight.
    3.     But then the options that we have in the API are less and the least weight value is “TextAttribute.WEIGHT_EXTRA_LIGHT” which is equal to “0.5”.
    4.     This value is not sufficient as the boldness of the text is comparatively more than the text that is appearing in jre-1.5.
    5.     Then we tried to give the value manually, instead of using the API. But then, it was mentioned in the API that any values mentioned other than the ones specified in the API will be rounded to the nearest integer.
    6.     By doing this we have customized the boldness of the Label, but could not achieve the required boldness of the Label.
    Please need a urgent solution.

    Hi,
    The reason of the problem is Antialiasing effect of the graphics. In Control Panel -> Performance Information and tools -> Adjust visual effect, if the 'Smooth edges of screen font' is unchecked then the boldiness of the font or the Antialiasing effect is not there.
    But this effect is reflecting not only on my swing based and applet based application but also on the whole system.
    I tried to call the renderingHint method and change default value of the key KEY_TEXT_ANTIALIASING to VALUE_TEXT_ANTIALIASING_OFF, to make the antialiasing effect off for the application.
    I implemented the below code:
    Graphics g= new Graphics();
    Graphics2D g2d = (Graphics2D)g;
    g2d.setRenderingHint(RenderingHints.KEY_TEXT_ANTIALIASING,
    RenderingHints.VALUE_TEXT_ANTIALIAS_OFF);
    But I am not able to create an object of Graphics.

  • Master Collection fails to start after Windows Vista update

    Last night, Automatic Update patched my machine and restarted. This morning, I find that all my CS3 apps (from Master Collection) will not start. Every app presents me with the "Adobe ________ .exe has stopped working." Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks!

    Hi all, just ran into the same issue after Service Pack 1 for Vista. Here's the solution:
    If you are getting a message about the BRS pencil tool when launching Illustrator and you are using Windows Vista or XP, you may be missing an important font.
    For Vista users you are missing the Segoe-UI font. For XP users
    you are missing the Tahoma font. These fonts need to be installed on
    your system in order for Illustrator, Flash, Photoshop and InDesign to
    launch. Most of the other applications will give you a generic
    "application has stopped working" error when trying to launch.
    Also,another clue is located inside the Event Viewer. For vista users, click on your start button and in the search area type "event", the event viewer will show in the results area, click on it and then click on "windows logs", then click on "application". For XP users, click Start, then Run and type "eventvwr" and hit enter, then click on
    "Application". By double-clicking on an error you will see the
    description for the problem. If the faulting module shows AdobeOwl.dll, you are most likely missing the font. You can do a google search for the font and they are available for download.
    So far I have not found a solution for a mac. The documents referencing these errors are kb402311 and 331889

    The heading of he pop up scren says 'Windows Encountered a problem installing the driver software for your devie. Just below this message it says 'Nokia N95 USB Phone Parent'. Below this is where it says "Access is Denied".
    I have tried removing the driver from Device Manger, restarted and tried again same issue. I have downloaded the connectivity cable drivers but it says I already have the latest version available.

    Details:
    Windows Vista Ultimate 32 Bit (Service Pack 1)
    Nokia N95
    USB Cable Connection
    Thanks in advcance!!!

    microsoft's support page has some info for this problem:
    They said: "If the Infcache.1 file is deleted or corrupted, Windows Vista does not re-create the Infcache.1 file."
    and there's also some patch link there.
    check here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940199/en-us/
    Since the forum moderator insists that all the link posted must be verified by Nokia, I'm not sure if a link to Microsoft will survive here.

  • Lightroom 4.3 update exe wont open in windows vista..

    I had no problem updating my laptop with windows 8 to lightroom 4.3 however, the exe file wont even open on my main computer using windows Vista.. 4.2 updater opens no problem but 4.3 updater doesn't   solution? don't say update windows.. lol

    Having the same problems with Firefox, Chrome and IE, on Vista, all downloads fail to run the .exe. After downloading with Firefox on my Ubuntu PC and copying the file to my Vista box I have finally managed to run the exe to extract the install programme, readme & the lightoom 4 files folder etc and then on the second attempt manged to get the install exe to run and install 4.3.
    This is not what i expect from Adobe!!
    Adobe, can you be more specific as to what is causing this problem and also perhaps consider making the downloads available through FTP instead of only HTTP, it would be a more efficient use of your download server which seems to get saturated too frequently.

  • Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit) is slow. Which start-up services should run?

    I recently had to use system restore and make a few changes to get my system running again.  Ooops. I now have a very slow computer whereas it was working fine before.  I haven't recently installed any new software or hardware and suspect that some essential start-up services may have been disabled, stopped or set to manual while some other unused services may have been set to start, automatic or automatic (delayed).
    Can someone please direct me to another thread (if available) or list which start-up services should be in which state?
    Thank you!
    System details:
     ~ HP IQ818A
     ~ Windows Vista Home Premium
      ~ Service Pack 1
     ~ 4GB RAM
     ~ 64-bit
     ~ avast! Anti-virus is active

    Sydney,
    I don't have an IQ818 at the moment, all I have is an IQ506T - from last fall.  I had just done a recovery of it.
    Note:  1) I did choose to NOT perform automatic updates, 2) I haven't yet configured Norton, and 3) I haven't turned off TouchSmart from running in the background.
    This isn't exactly your system, but it would be somewhat close.  Your safest bet would be to recover and start over, but here goes with the services listings.  Please note its comma delimited - you can look at it better with something like Excel, Works or Open Office.
    Good luck on this.

  • Can only display Chineses characters on OSX, not Windows Vista ?

    I have a OSX 10.5 and a Windows Vista machine, both are configured to use English/United Kingdom as Language/Locale. in a java app on OSX I can view chinese characters ok, but on Windows I cant they are just displayed as a square - why are they being treated differently
    thanks paul

    Thanks, that did work - I used this.setFont(Font.decode("arial unicode 11"));
    But on further investigation I found that the problem only occurred with the default Tahoma font when using JGoodies Windows Look and Feel, using the standard Windows or metal LAF it was fine. If I changed the font it worked with JGoodies as well.
    here is a program to illustrate problem
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    public class UnicodeTest
        public void start() throws Exception
           UIManager.setLookAndFeel(UIManager.getSystemLookAndFeelClassName());
           UIManager.setLookAndFeel("com.jgoodies.looks.windows.WindowsLookAndFeel");
            JTextField txtField = new JTextField();
            txtField.setText("\u01ff\u5742\u672c");
            JTextField txt2Field = new JTextField();
            txt2Field.setText("\u01ff\u5742\u672c");
            txt2Field.setFont(Font.decode("arial unicode 11"));
            System.out.println("Font Field 1 is:"+txtField.getFont());
            System.out.println("Font Field 2 is:"+txt2Field.getFont());
            JFrame frame = new JFrame("UnicodeTest");
            frame.setLayout(new FlowLayout());
            frame.add(txtField);
            frame.add(txt2Field);
            frame.pack();
            frame.setVisible(true);
         public static void main(String args[])  throws Exception
            UnicodeTest test = new UnicodeTest();
            test.start();
    }
