Windows Vista not recognizing my new 160GB ipod classic

I'm having a terrible time getting Windows Vista or itunes to recognize my 160GB ipod classic (ipod software version 1.0.3 PC). I've spent the last two days going through the 5 Rs (4 or 5 times, now)... updated all the USB drivers... reassigned my slave drive letter to make sure there's no conflict... nothing is working.
The ipod is seen in the Device Manager as an "unknown device", but that's it.
The "USB Mass Storage Device" and "Apple ipod Controller" are listed under the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" and all drivers are up to date.
When I try to update and install the driver for the "unknown device", it automaticly searches windows and the internet, but finds nothing. When I point it towards my C:\Windows\System32 folder (as suggested elsewhere) it locates a driver... but encounters an "unknown error" when installing.
Absolutely nothing works! I'm not new to itunes, ipods or working with Windows Vista. This is terribly frustrating as I now have a $350 paperweight! Ironiclly, I just sold and sent off my 5g 60GB (WORKING!) ipod, too!
Ugggggghhhhhhhh!!!
Please, please, please help!

Update: (Not that anything is fixed yet)
Deleting infcache1 (as suggested elsewhere) had no effect... nor did moving around the usbappl.inf files forom the file repository as described here: http://teknobabble.wordpress.com/200...er-a-solution/
Vista just keeps asking for a driver and when I point it towards one... runs into an error when intalling. The hotfix provided adressing this exact issue (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940199) hasn't worked nad I get an error saying "This update doesn't apply to your system". O Rly!?! Hmmmm... Windows Vista 32... exact same error when mounting my ipod. Sure SOUNDS like it SHOULD!
Tried this fix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925196/en-us but actually found the CD/DVD upper and lower filters in a different key: HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. Still no joy, though. Starting itunes just gives an error message saying it requires the registry entry to burn CD's and asks that I re-install itunes. Attempts to connect prior to reinstalling (since it still runs) have no effect.
Tried restarting itues service http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307078 but it just hangs. Reinstalling and restarting has no effect.
It just kills me that I can see the ipod connected in the Device Manager ("unknown device") and in Computer Management/Storage/Disc Management ("Rmovable Disc 1" with 148 GB).
So frustrating. This is the first problem I've run into with Vista that has stumped me for more than 24-hours and has really got me feeling stupid.

  • New 160Gb ipod classic will not be see in in Itunes V11.3.1(2)

I bought a new 160Gb Ipod classic. I bought it because my previous 2, older ipod classics, stopped syncing. One day they worked the next they didnt. I swear this happened after an Itunes update too. Anyway, I took one to Tekserve (local Apple service provider) and they told me one of the pins in the ipod i brought to them was damaged so the connection couldnt be made. I didnt really buy the answer, but since the ipod was older i figured, ok, I'll get a new one. Well I just got a new one. opened up the box, took out a new USB cord, plugged it into my computer and boom, NOTHING. The computer recognizes it in the Finder (MAC OS 10.6.8). Then again the MAC recognized my other 'broken' ipods too, Itunes just doesnt.
So I had hunch before this this problem has to be a software bug. Now its confirmed. There is no way a brand new ipod should not be seen in Itunes. Trust me i tried all the normal 'Ipod doesnt sync support stuff' and it doesnt  solve the problem. This is an advanced problem and one that i need  real answer on. Does an ipod classic work with Itunes  V11.3.1(2) running on a MAC 10.6.8 OS? Ipod classics still cost $250 which is ridiculous since the technology is 5 years old, so if Apple stopped supporting them on the new Itunes without making that know I think there should be some serious press about this!
    Please help.

Well I finally figured out the problem, not thanks to anyone from Apple for that matter. You would asume this problem has happened before and is still happening. The problem was I couldn't copy certain songs anymore from iTunes to my iPod Classic. When trying to copy certain songs I got an error.
If you have this problem it means your song file is corrupted. You can simply check this by trying to copy it from your hard drive to an external hard drive. Here you will also get an error message.
This means you need to replace all the corrupted files by a back up on your hard drive or download it again. I did this and now everything works fine.
Hope this will solve a lot of problems.

  • Has Apple addressed poor sound quality issues with new 160GB iPod classic?

I just bought a new 160GB iPod classic, replacing a perfectly good 80GB iPod Video (5.5), thinking that the newer one would be superior to my 3 year old model. I discovered that the sound of the new unit was flat and muddy compared to the older model. I found that the 5th gen iPod video was more "spacial", if that's an appropriate word to use; the bass was more present and more clearly defined, as was the rest of the sonic spectrum. I searched several forums to research this issue and while there were numerous references to this issue, all of the posts I found referred to the original iPod classics (80GB and 160GB) and not the later 120GB classics nor the new 160GB classics like the one I bought. Has Apple done anything to address this issue since the first classics were released or are the new ones still suffering from the same sound quality issues as the original classics?

Based on your observations here, they apparently have not changed the sound quality since the original 160GB classic. I noticed a clear narrowing of the sound stage (ambiance) between the 5.5G 80Gb and my 6G 160GB. You're describing the same characteristic. I don't own the newest 160GB version and came here today to see if it might have improved the sound quality back to the 5.5 spaciousness. Note that the 5.5G has a higher signal to noise ratio than the 6G, making it difficult for me to enjoy it through efficient balanced armature in ear monitors like the Shure SE530s or Ulimate Ears Triple.Fi 10s.

  • Suspicous HD sound on new 160GB iPod Classic

    Hi there,
yesterday I bought one of the new 160GB iPod Classic to replace my old iPod Photo. After loading some music I noticed that the harddrive is really loud and makes disturbing sounds (spinning, clicking and chattering, obviously HD sounds) whenever I switch to the main menu or start playing albums.
Ok, I know that Hard drives do make noises while operating but what disturbs me is the volume. You can hear it even when the iPod is lying on a table one meter away and it is considerably louder than my iMacs working volume for example. In comparison my 4 year old iPod Photo is really silent, I have to put the iPod to my ear to hear the HD sound - the only times I heard a HD sound of this kind is whenever my old iPod froze/the HD crashed and I had to reset it. So whenever my Classic starts to spin its HD I think it's gonna freeze/crash and it freaks me out.
I contacted Amazon (where I bought it) and they told me that HD drive noises are normal and that I should contact Apple.
So, is this normal or a case in which I should try to get a replacement from Apple?

Amazon kept claiming that this ipod HD is not defective, still I returned the iPod to them using my right to return any item within 14 days of purchase. With the refund I walked to a local electronics market and bought their last iPod Classic 120GB (with a 25% discount).
Now the sound difference becomes even more obvious to me. The 120GB's HD is considerably more silent than my former 160GB (no high pitch, you can't hear the HD spining unless you put it to your ear, the HD clicks is not lounder than pressing the click wheel). The iPod I originally got must have been a flawed one. I can't imagine that Apple unleashes such an unconvenient product on its customers as a regular item. I'm eager to know if more buyers of the new 160GB complain about the HD sound and if a production flaw (?) of new HD modell is repsonsible for it.

  • Can I use my old accessories for a 40GB (4G) iPod with new 160GB iPod Classic?

    I just purchased a 160GB (7G) iPod Classic. I had been using a 40GB (4G) iPod.
The male connectors on  the accessories I used with my 40GB iPod seem to fit into the female connector on my new 160 GB. So, I am wondering if I can use these old accessories with my new 160GB iPod Classic. The old accessories I used with my 40GB (4G) iPod are as follows.
    1) Wall charger made by Apple. It has a firewire connection at one end of the charger cord which connects to  the small white plastic box of the charger that plugs into the wall. The other end of the charger cord seems to fit my iPod 160GB Classic.
    2) Dock made by Apple. It uses a firewire connection cord to my computer, in contrast to the USB connection cord that came with my 160GB iPod Classic.
    3) Car chargers that worked with my old 40GB, 4G  iPod. The car charger connectors seems to fit my new 160GB iPod Classic. One car charger is made by Apple. The other is not made by Apple.
So, could you please tell me if I can use any or all of these old accessories with my new 160GB Classic without damaging it.
    Thanks.
    Richard

  • Brand New 160GB Ipod Classic Not Responding to USB 2.0 connections Why?

I bought it online from Apple as a Christmas gift back in September. It charged succesfully using a wall charger but when connected to Windows PC's and Laptops(also running windows)neither computer recognized the Ipod as a connected device. The Ipod itself did nothing when connected. It showed no error screen nor did it begin to charge as most do when you connect them to a PC. What is seen on the screen is all the different menus you have to choose from like music, video and what not. All the stuff your supposed to see. I have no idea why it is not being regoznied by any PC unless it is incompatable with USB ports. If that's the case what am I to do about it? Aside from not connecting to PC's it appears to be working fine. The preloaded games play as they should and it does nothing out of the ordianary. Wall chargers work with it but attempted connections to PC's with USB 2.0 ports garner no response from the device. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had difficulty making my 160GB Ipod classic recognized as a device by my PC. I pushed and held down the menu and cener buttons for a bout 5 seconds. The apple logo appeared and ever since then my computer sees it as a device and it works as it should.

  • How can I make my brand new 160GB iPod Classic work?

I bought a 160GB Ipod Classic in January and have just tried to use it for the first time and it has been a disaster! I have spent hours trying to use it and failed. I have been using iTunes for some time now and have recently successfully set up Squeezebox to use the iTunes music I have uploaded from my CDs.
All started well - my system recognised the new hardware and iTunes started. I registered and said I wanted to synch my music and my photos and away it went. After 2-3GB of uploads I got an error saying
"The Owner's iPod cannot be synced. The required folder cannot be found." On pressing 'OK' it then said I'd got an unknown error. Pressing 'OK' again took me back to the first error message. I then tried everything I coould including relaoding iTunes and eventually got it started again. This time it got up to about 8GB (of about 10.5GB) before abending in the same way. Since then I have failed to take another step forward in many hours.
When I connect the iPod to my PC sometimes it appears briefly in 'My Compter' then disappears. Then the errors loop thus:-
START:The iPod itself says "Connected" the a few seconds later it says "Ejecting"
The device manager has a USB Mass Storage Device with an exclamation mark on a yellow background which then says
"Windows cannot use this hardware device because it has been prepared for'safe removal' but it has not been removed from the computer (code 47). To fix this problem, unplug the device from your computer and then plug it in again"
Doing this the causes the process to sytart again from START above.
On one occasion only, after a few hours trying, I got a message "Your iPod need to be reformatted to work with Windows" and it opened up iTunes and then sat and did nothing.
Running the diagnostics in iTunes says "No iPod found". The diagnostic information is set out below:

Have solved my own problem. My PC sits on the floor so I have a four-port USB hub on my desktop with one port in use. I use one of the other three ports for USB-related task. As I was shutting down for the night I had a - what turned out to be inspired - thought about whether there was an adequate power supply from the hub. I then tried the iPod USB connection directly into the front of my machine and everything worked. It seems that an inadequate power supply was the cause of this strange set of conditions.

  • Question about the new 160GB iPod classic? ("whir" noise?)

I just received one of the new 160GB iPod's for my birthday and I've noticed the faint “whir” or “whistling” others have talked about. I read many accounts that the noise is due to the HD and that it's happening with all of them, but can anyone link to me something that states exactly what's going with it? Or explain it at least?

Only apple can do it... And this is new with the latest 160GB editions...
The only thing you can do is hope that a firmware update can address this, but since it's related to the HDD I don't know if that's even possible.
You can always supply feedback to apple via this link:

  • Windows vista not recognizing airport extreme

So I've set up the AirPort Extreme and have created a wireless network to access the internet from my windows vista pc, mac and other apple products (iPod touch, iPad, etc.) and need a little help:
1 - I have the ethernet cable connected from the AirPort Extreme to my pc.  I am able to access the internet, but am not able to see the AirPort Extreme on my pc.
2 - My mac is connected to the AirPort Extreme wirelessly, however, I'm not able to see the AirPort Extreme Utility on the mac.
3 - I'd like to set up a file-sharing network between my pc and my mac.  What is the best way to do this through the AirPort Extreme?
4 - I've also purchased Apple TV that I will be hooking up to my television to then be able to play home videos that currently reside on both the pc and the mac.  Any tips in setting this up?
I'm not the most mac or tech savvy.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

1 - I have the ethernet cable connected from the AirPort Extreme to my pc.  I am able to access the internet, but am not able to see the AirPort Extreme on my pc.
To access the AirPort Extreme you would need to use AirPort Utility for Windows. For Windows Vista, you need to use version 5.5.3 of this utility.
2 - My mac is connected to the AirPort Extreme wirelessly, however, I'm not able to see the AirPort Extreme Utility on the mac.
The AirPort Utility is located in the \Applications\Utilities folder on your Mac.
3 - I'd like to set up a file-sharing network between my pc and my mac.  What is the best way to do this through the AirPort Extreme?
Regardless of router manufacturer you would configure both the PC and the Mac for file sharing. For the Mac, check out the following Apple Support article. You may also find this Macworld article helpful. Although it was written for Windows XP, it should work just as well for Vista.
4 - I've also purchased Apple TV that I will be hooking up to my television to then be able to play home videos that currently reside on both the pc and the mac.  Any tips in setting this up?
The Apple TV works best when streaming from the Internet. However, it does support some streaming from a local network device. Primarily you would stream from iTunes.
As far as set up, the Apple TV is relatively simple. Basically just plug it into power and connect it to your TV using an HDMI cable. The Apple TV is a minicomputer with built-in network connectivity (both wired and wireless). You configure the Apple TV through its menu interface that will be displayed on your TV set.

  • I have a new 160GB iPod Classic. I often listen to it for many hours at a time. Even with Itunes and the Classic set on shuffle it repeats songs often and only plays a small fraction of my songs. Help!            of my

When listening for hours to my new Clasic 160 with several thousand songs and both itunes and the Classic set to shuffle all songs it only plays a small fraction of my library and plays many songs several times over that period. It also seems to pick a small different group of songs to repeat without touching many of most of my songs each time I start listening. Over 98% of the music is legally owned in my CD collection. A few are down loads which play! There should be no issues with ownership. Please help. As much as I like all my tunes I want to actually hear them all. There are many many albums that have never been played.

Okay, well we've eliminated a couple of things.
One thing I have noticed about the iPod Classic: I suspect that "shuffle" is actually a Playlist, not a real shuffle. The Classic is not as powerful as iTunes or a desktop/computer, so it cannot truely "shuffle songs". I suspect what happens is that every Sync of the Classic with its iTunes Library causes a revised "shuffle playlist" to be put on the iPod and then, when you choose Shuffle play, it actually uses that special hidden "shuffle playlist".
So one trick is to Sync your iPod with iTunes frequently. This would change the "shuffle playlist". Another trick would be to create your own Playlists, either by adding what you want to a Regular Playlist or by creating a Smart Playlist which adds and removes songs by itself.
Smart Playlists: for example, you can create a Smart Playlist (in iTunes) which contains a random selection of all songs, or a random selection of a particular group of songs, provided the song has not been played for a period of time, say six months, or 300 days. Every Sync of the iPod with iTunes would remove any song from that Smart Playlist if it has been played. That same song cannot go back into the Playlist for a period of six months, or whatever you choose.
This way, you can reduce the likelyhood of hearing the same songs too often. This brings me to another point. If you have the same song, on different albums, then it's possible that you are hearing that same song but from both albums.
Try this: in your iTunes Library,
look for and click on the big + button and choose New Smart Playlist..., if you do not have the Sidebar displayed, switch to the Playlists view where you will find it in the bottom left corner,
Set it up to look like this:
It creates a list of songs that have not been played for fifteen weeks. It excludes videos and in my iTunes Library, it has 527 songs in it. If you would like a smaller list than that, click on the Limit to and fill in the number of songs you want.
Having set it up, play some songs from it (in shuffle mode if you wish) and watch how it changes . The song must play through to the end of the track before it is classed as "played". If you like it, let it go onto your iPod. You could set up a few Playlists, each with their own rules. Even if a song appears in two different Smart Playlists, if you have the "last played is not in the last" rule in both lists, then playing the song will eliminate it from both lists. None of this removes songs from the iPod (unless you use Sync selected Playlists...).
