Windows Vista Tip - Updating Drivers, all you really need is a network or wifi driver

So just what do I mean by this? Often times, on Windows Update, Drivers are already available for your device, so why not just install a NIC or WiFi driver and let Windows Update take care of the rest of the dirty work? You have to update your computer anyway so why not.
Worth a try and much easier then searching left and right for those drivers.

Sometimes the WHQL-certified drivers are not nearly as good as updated non-WHQL drivers.  (WHQL certification means very little IMO...)  Windows Update only provides WHQL-certified drivers, and in my experience (especially with regards to laptop video) doesn't even find the latest WHQL revision.
I don't think I've ever received an up-to-date driver from Windows Update - it is in my experience consistently out of date by a significant period of time compared to getting the latest drivers from the device vendor.

  • Do you really need the 4-in-1 drivers

Do you really need to install the 4-in-1 drivers if you are using windows 2000pro? What I notice is that windows 2000 pro install all the drivers but the agp drivers. Ihave the K7T TURBO 2 MOTHERBOARD.

Do you have the abilty to backup or image your OS? If so bench mark your system using Sandra, PCMark and 3DMark, install the latest VIA Hyperion drivers and bench mark again.  I am confident that you will see an improvement.  The VIA drivers are written specifically for the chipset, like using Detonator drivers on NVidia cards.  If not rebuild you image from your back up.

  • I have windows vista home premium and all other versions of iTunes worked on my laptop iTunes 10 won't work, I get a message saying I'm not connected to the Internet when I am. Why isn't iTunes recognizing my browser configuration?

I have windows vista home premium and all other iTunes worked on my laptop, I downloaded iTunes 10 and now the iTunes will not connect to the Internet. I use Mozilla firefox on my laptop and for some reason it keeps saying the connection timed out and I'm not connected to the Internet when I am. Why isn't iTunes recognizing my web configuration?

It probably has to do with your security and/or browser configuration.
When my laptop crashed last year and I had to get a new one, I dealt with the same thing. First, go to your control panel and select the security section. See if your firewalls are up or not. If they are, turn them off. If you have any software to speed up your browser, that can affect the connection as well. Go into that software and disble/turn it off. If this doesn't work, contact customer support. They have a few other tricks they had me try that worked, but I can't remember them now.

  • For the average person what really is the point of the activity monitor app when all you really want to know is whether your mac is running at its best?

I have had my imac for nearly 18 months now,
It's okay, is the best I can say about it.
    It cost me around £800+
So recently (and foolishly!) I downloaded OS Mavericks when I was actually looking for a freebie word processor programme (I got Bean because it's simple like me.)
Now the point of all this is that Mavericks has new features like a redesigned Safari (But I ain't noticed any difference yet) and Imaps (Huh!) and Ibooks and Imovie or something.
So when you are oldish like me, you really don't want people to keep changing and introducing new stuff (most of which is pointless anyway) all the time; because it takes us old ***** a while to get used to the last "improvement."
So you try and get rid of all these new apps that you don't want and didn't ask for anyway,
and then you find out you can't, because they're an integral part of the new OS.
    Brilliant!
Then you find that Mail has to redo itself and this thing no longer works properly etc. and you start wishing you hadn't got up that morning...
So you try and get it all back the way it was..
    And you can't.
Because you don't have an external hard drive to use the Time machine back up facility.
So you get in touch with Apple Support and it's now nearly bedtime, but at least you feel like you might be gettin' somewhere.
You talk to the supportguy and suddenly you can't remember what the problem is and what your name is, and you're thinking you might as well order in a pizza seein' as you've drunk the last of the gin..."
Anyway the guy manages to keep his temper and you get some degree of order restored but the machine still seems "jumpy" so someone says to you
"Check out the Activity Monitor! That'll tell you if something's not working right."
So you do, but it doesn't.
Just a bunch of numbers and CPU stuff and User Idiot Input etc.
All you really want is some little box to pop up and say,
"Hey! yyyou've really ssscrewed things upppp-p here, old mmmmman!!. This programme is no longer functioning properly, that thing appears to frozen, and you just wiped half your saved photos of Aunt Jessie's 94th birthday celebration (the one's where she had her eyes open)..
Press here for a full maintenance overview and repair menu.."
By this time you are on the floor, your leg's got cramp and you really really need a pee.
But there ain't no maintenance programme, just an activity monitor app you can't make any sense out of, so you yank the **** power cord out of the socket and go to bed..
    So you try and

  • Do you really need the shoes to make this product work?

I just saw some information on the TV about this. My question; if anyone can help with it, is do you REALLY need the shoes to make this work. I mean all it is is a little disk and a wireless plug-in for the Nano. It would really help me out if someone can tell me.

You do not need the shoes to make it work. Check out this thread for ways people have gotten the sensor to work with non-nike+ shoes: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=559827&tstart=75

  • Do You Really Need The Nike+sport shoes

Do you really need the nike+sport shoes to have the kit work or could you just buy any type of shoe and find a way to make the sensor stick?

i just cut a spot in the insole of my New Balance
high tops. (i walk/run in them because my ankles are
    weak) just remeber to calibrate.
well strengthen your ankles and start runnning!

  • Do You really Need a Screen Protector?

I'd just like to know if you really need this, the GS has a different coating on their screen than the previous models. Do these protectors really work, do you need them on your GS for insurance?

A screen protector on the new 3GS would defeat the purpose of the oleophobic coating. I have tried protectors on my Palms but I prefer bare back with the iPhone. Screen protectors are a pain to apply without leaving wrinkles and bubbles and you can never replicate the smooth feel of the glass. You will also lose a little bit of screen brightness as they will never be 100% transmitting. I carry the iPhone in my pocket with the screen facing my pants leg and my wallet on top without an unsightly bulge. I don't put keys or lose change in that pocket. I agree that if you are throwing the iphone into a bag, purse, or backpack with lots of sharp objects (like your eating utensils or Bowie knife set), a slip cover might be a good idea. I bought one but it was so tight and hard to remove that I don't use it. Maybe others can suggest a good case that preserves the slimness of the iPhone.

  • Do you really need an IDE?

Do you really need to have an IDE for Java? Does it make things easier for a newbie?
    Thanks

I hear what you're saying... I don't think BlueJ should be used to write HelloWorld, but after compiling something basic on the command line I think it can be a decent introduction to Java.
I started programming a year ago and after a month or so of working in Notepad++ and the command line I used BlueJ until I felt I had outgrown it. It isn't anything spectacular, as you know, and is sort of buggy, but I still think it can aid in the learning of Java for someone new to the language.
In particular I think BlueJ does a nice job of emphasizing the idea of objects -- having a visual representation of your classes as little UML-like diagrams that you can interactively play with is kind of cool. Being able to right-click to create Objects and see how they interact with each other is, in retrospect, I think, probably not a bad way to learn.

  • WIndows Vista RC1 (No Drivers)

    Well, hey there.
I've just installed Windows Vista RC1 (March 2009). It's pretty recent.
I went ahead and installed my Boot Camp drivers, but lo and behold nothing installed. I figured it was a botched installation, formatted that partition, and started again.
So, I have tried once again and I am having all kinds of problems. For some reason I can't change the brightness of my monitor or keyboard (both are max all the time) and much of my hardware is not recognized. (By 'much' I mean 'all'. I manually installed a wireless driver.)
Vista installs smoothly, I go about installing the BootCamp drivers and the installation window itself says it's installing each component, but the device manager isn't changing at all. Everything remains "Generic" & "Unrecognized".
I just want Vista to play some games so I can blow off some steam & to do some 3ds Max stuff for college.
Why is this simple process of installation so difficult?
This Apple business is becoming very stressful very quickly.
What I want is some regular old drivers for my stuff to work, there's nothing unique about the hardware so why is it so awkward and frustrating & difficult to get drivers? At best, can someone maybe tell me what kinds of hardware would be in the late 2008 MacBook Pro & how do I get my brightness adjustments to work?
And also, why don't Apple just have individual drivers for download: Nearly every other manufacturer & vendor does (Dell, HP, Sony, Lenovo, Acer, etc.. They use third party hardware and drivers too).

I don't have a MacBook series, and in the folder "Apple" are drivers for various devices.
Try to install directly. If not try using Device Manager to update.
And try running system file checker just for good measure
    *sfc /scannow*
and follow that up with hardware check of your boot partition (schedule chkdsk).
Whether you can install Nvidia drivers manually or not, that would help.
And DO create system restore points and backups.

  • Windows Vista Ipod Nano drivers??

When I connect my iPod nano 4gb to my new laptop, with iTunes 7 installed, it tells me it needs to install drivers and insert CD...but I dont have the CD!
Can anyone give me a link for these drivers at all, or give me adivice on how to get around this?
I've previously read a suggestion to manually search for drivers by specifying 2 distinct folders - System32 I think, and also going through Control Panel, Devices, Ipod, then selecting different options for updating drivers.
    Nothing works yet!!!
    Please help guys

Something is going on with your Nano if Vista doesn't see it anymore. Did you use device manager and try to uninstall your Nano? Perhaps this will work. Once uninstalled, the next time you plug it in, Vista will see the Nano as a new device and install the proper USB drivers.
I'm not on my Vista computer right now...but here's an article to help you find device manager in Vista: http://kb.wisc.edu/page.php?id=5183
    Good luck!

  • Windows Vista Home basic drivers for internet

How do I get drivers for Windows Vista Home basic edition to work with Windows vista on my mac. Can't connect to internet on vista.

    Hi,
    for the obvious:
After the Vista installation, did you install the Apple drivers from the OSX Leopard Installation DVD ?
If not, boot into Vista and insert the OSX Installation DVD that came with your iMac.
The Driver Setup usually starts automatically.
All drivers needed are on that DVD.
    regards
