Windows WILL NOT recognize my nano

My nano was working fine until I needed to recharge the battery now it alternatively displays sad icon, battery with lightning flash and apple symbol.
I have re-installed itunes and ipod updater.
I have reset my nano.
I have plugged it into every USB port I have
I have restarted my nano
I cannot restore my nano since it is NOT recognized by windows.
No starting in disk mode because I cannot do anything with my nano
I have checked for and installed windows updates.
I have looked at pages and pages of discussion threads with no avail. I really just want my nano to work again, it was great for the few weeks it worked!! Now it is a very ineffective very expensive paper weight
ANY suggestions?

I have a similar problem. In Windows my nano is nowhere to be found. And according to the latest version of itunes there's no nano connected to the computer when it clearly is. At first itunes found my nano but then something must have happened, the version I had before all started not to work properly...
I've tried unstalling and re-installing itunes and ipod updater (both from the cd and the one I downloaded from over the net). I've restarted my computer several times.
At one point I even had trouble getting itunes to work again, but at least that's fixed.
I've also reset my nano, I do'nt know how many times
The biggest problem now seems to be that every time I've launched ipod updater and connected my nano to the computer the ipod updater freezes, and the screen insists on displaying "do not disconnect".
I've not even managed to transfer music to the nano. sigh
Please, can anyone help?
I love my nano but it would be fantastic if I got it to work as well! lol

  • Windows will not recognize ipod nano anymore

At the beginning it was working fine, but after I left it for a week it stopped working. When I plugged it to the computer, the computer would not recognize it.
When I plugged in the ipod nano into Window XP, the following happens:
    - Window XP lags and take a long time to display the message "new hardware found"
    - my ipod displays the charging symbol
    - then ipod shows the screen "Do not disconnect" and it stalls on this screen
    - after awhile, Windows show a "safely remove hardware" icon on the bottom right of my screen, but it describes the recognized hardware as "Apple ipod USB Device at location 0"
    Note that:
    - my ipod is not charged at all after all this
    - itunes would not recognize my ipod
    - there's not hardware icon in "My Computer" and "Device Manager"
    - my computer can recognize my friend's ipod
    - I can neither restore or reset my ipod because it does not get passed the "Do not disconnect" screen
So if anybody could provide any help, i'll be very very grateful. =P Please save me.

Maybe for that one week that you left your iPod nano idle, your iPod software automatically updated and left you with some strange conflict.
Anyhow, your symptons sound similar to some described in this article:

Not sure if the solution presented in the article will work for you, but let us know if it solved it.

  • ITunes and Windows will not recognize iPod Nano 3rd Generation

I've been on this ALL day. Neither Windows or iTunes will recognize iPod. I have uninstalled and re-installed iTunes.... I don't know how many times.
iPod is new. Was ok to sync music and photos last week.. but now nothing. Any ideas anybody... this is driving me nuts.
When plugging in iPod - it beeps and then right away says it is ok to disconnect and beeps again... and iPod goes on... and then charges up.
I was skeptical in buying an iPod for the kids... and now am disappointed. Please somebody... change my mind!!!!

I've been having a similar issue with my iPod. My iPod will not play songs. Basically, the song or podcast will appear on screen, but is stuck at 0:00 and will not play.
When I connected my iPod to my computer, it was not recognized by iTunes and it did not appear in My Computer. I checked the Windows Device Manager, and the device did appear there. Strangely enough, the device did appear in My Computer as a removable disk only after I closed out Device Manager. I'm wondering if I need to restore my iPod. How do I do so without iTunes?

  • Windows will not recognize my ipod

My windows will not recognize my ipod. I tried running the latest Ipod Updater several times and received the following error message: Ipod requires Windows 2000(SP) or Windows XP, Please update your software and try again. I have Windows XP so I'm a bit confused to why I'm receiving that error message.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. BTW, I already tried "re-starting" my ipod and that didn't work either.

Unfortunately, there is no one ‘Silver Bullet’ answer for this issue. Many things can contribute to the problem. Here are various ‘generic’ solutions that you can try in an effort to correct your problem. One should work. These are listed in simplest to more involved order (usually).
First, make sure that the iPod is fully charged.
Try Resetting Your iPod while it's connected to the computer.
Hold down the Menu and Select buttons until you see the Apple logo (or Menu & Play/Pause in older models).
This will often get it recognized. It may take several attempts.
Try closing and re-starting iTunes. There have been cases where iTunes refuses to see an iPod, but after re-starting, it works again.
Also try re-booting the entire computer. Especially if the PC has been operating for a long time &/or many programs have been opened and closed, repeatedly.
Other USB connected peripherals may be the cause as well. Try removing all connected USB items and attaching the iPod. If you have a USB keyboard, it may be worth a try using the adapter to convert it to non-USB. If the iPod connects, continue plugging things back in until you have the problem return. You may have then isolated the issue. Sometimes it could be a printer, camera, Flash Card reader, or other attached device causing a conflict.
If your iPod shows up in Explorer under 'my computer' try changing the drive letter:
    -- Click on Start=>Control Panel=>Admin Tools=>Computer Management=>Disk Management
-- Right-Click on the iPod and select “change drive letter”
-- Choose something further along in the alphabet that is unused (Usually, “M”, “N”, “O” or something similar)
    -- Safely eject the iPod
    -- Reboot the PC
If that doesn't work, Put Your iPod into Disk Mode then plug it in and you should be able to Restore the iPod
Your PC may have difficulty with the USB2 protocol and the iPod. See this Article for a possible solution: iPod not Recognized Correctly
Also try these hints (and the other suggestions above) from any other USB port you may have on the PC. Sometimes switching USB ports can make all the difference.
    Also See:
Your Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod
iPod does not appear in iTunes or on the desktop
iPod appears in Windows Explorer but does not appear in iTunes“Strange iPod Behavior within Windows”
If you are getting a ‘Missing Drivers’ message, try this:
    1. Go to http://www.driverguide.com and register (free)
    2. Download ‘usbstor.sys’ & ‘usbstor.inf’ to your PC and place them in your i386 Folder
    3. Update both drivers by selecting the two files you just downloaded
    4. Reboot computer
    5. Open iTunes and then connect you iPod
If all the above fails, you may have a Virus, Malware or SpyWare problem.
If you do find that your Device Manager is blank, you should probably check up on this issue first: No Items Appear in the Device Manager List When You Open It

  • Windows does not recognize ipod nano

i cannot get windows (or itunes) to recongize my ipod nano. once in connect the ipod, i get the 'do not disconnect' message indefinately. it used to work. it reinstalled itunes, reset my ipod, etc. any suggestions?

thanks, but the troubleshooter assumes windows is recognizing the ipod. in my case it is not. i download itune 7.0 just in case. same problem exists. in fact, since windows does not recognize the ipod, itunes eventually freezes up.

  • Reinstalled Itunes for Windows will not recognize ipod touch 3rd generation.

Itunes for Windows and PC will not recognize my ipod touch 3rd generation.  Also it will not fully charge using a brand new apple brand power adapter and cable. I have already uninstalled all Apple software on PC and reinstalled.  I've tried every step suggested by Apple online iPod touch Troubleshooting Assistant.

the best thing i think you could do is go to an apple store or uninstall itunes and reinstall it one more time and see what happens

  • I'm frustrated.....iTunes will not recognize my Nano!  I need help.

This has been a source of frustration for me for the past day and this morning. It will recognize my mother's Shuffle but not my Nano. I will tell you how this came to be. Prior to this, iTunes recognized BOTH iPods.
    Yesterday:
    1. I realized that the middle button on my iPod brings up the Apple logo.
    2. I installed the upgrade thingy and put it on my iPod nano, which fixed the problem.
    3. However, iTunes DID NOT RECOGNIZE my nano.
    4. I spend hours starting and re-starting my computer, following ALL FIVE of the Rs. I uninstalled, re-installed, uninstalled, re-installed, etc. etc.
I am very upset that I cannot (probably temporarily) use my Nano. It was a gift to me and I use it when I go for daily walks. This problem had started this morning on Sunday and it is still unresolved. I am considering giving up at this point and exchanging my nano for a new one. I also refuse to pay $50 to $60 for tech support.
    Thanks for your help!

Nevermind....called the guys at Apple and they said that my iPod is "kaputt." Thanks for the help.

  • HT1386 windows will not recognize my iphone

I connect my iphone to my laptop and it will charge, but it will not recognize the device throgh windows or itunes. Ive tried the troubleshooting on the support site but it didnt work.

You should wait for windows to install the device driver software. Just keep your iPhone plugged in and look for something to do for 8 minutes. If Windows doesn't attempt to install device driver software, re-install iTunes.

  • Windows does not recognize my nano

Hi there, I'll try to explain my problem: I just got my nano and connected it before installing itunes (I think that was wrong) so it showed the ipod drive at "my computer", then i tried to install itunes but when it asks to connect the ipod to see if it needs formatting, i do it and it says it needs formating, then i click format and wait for a long time but nothing happens (it never finish the format process)... Itunes does not recognize the ipod at all, my computer only shows the drive where i can copy files... I've resetted my ipod, reinstalled itunes, rebooted the PC but it's the same... I've also tried to restore the ipod but the updater doesn't recognize it... please someone help!!!

This came from another thread, but worked for me.  Problem is with newest iTunes 4.62 and Windows 8.1.  Unistall iTunes, as well as its helper programs (Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Divice Support, and Apple Software Update).  Reboot, and reinstall iTunes.  It will reinstall all the other ones and you should be able to connect your nano.  Good luck.

  • Windows will not open with Nano in dock/charger?????

    Hello to all.
This is first mp3 player and have not had a great experience so far. Technically this 2nd Gen 2G is my second one, the first was immediately returned to store becoause of problems.
Anyway, now my computer will not get past the first black screen where it checks it's drives and OS. It sees the primary and locks up. If I turn it off and disconnect the iPod and re-start, everything runs like it should.
I first discovered this with my 1st 2G and thought it was part of the problem. I was just leaving it plugged in with the USB charger cord when I turned off my computer in the evenings. I found a cool little charging dock with an RCA jack to plug into my bookshelk system by my computer. Still does the same thing! Downloaded iTunes 7.0, but still having the same problem!
This is my first experience with mac/Apple and so far between the PITA software, difficulties I am having with the Music Store, (another issue), and this start up problem, I ain't impressed!
Any help to ease my frustrations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If you're not even booting into Windows, updating iTunes won't make a difference (as you've found out). What it sounds like to me is that your computer is trying to boot off your new Nano. Many newer computers allow booting off USB devices. It's possible (especially given the way you have explained the problem) that your computer is set to boot off of either external or USB devices first. This would explain why you had the same problem with your previous iPod. Do you know how to enter the BIOS in your computer? Usually when you first turn on your computer, it will flash hit F2, F10, Delete, or something like that in order to enter setup. You should be able to find something related to the boot order. You want to set it to boot from your hard drive first (or CD drive if you want... but then be sure your hard drive is next).

  • Itunes will not recognize ipod nano 7th generation

I purchased an ipod nano 7th generation today. Plugged it into my computer...my computer recognizes the device but itunes will not. I have uninstalled and reinstalled itunes and follwed all other directions in troubleshooting. As soon as I open itunes it even disappears from 'my computer'. Please help.

  • Itunes and Apple computer will not recognize ipod nano. What do I do?

I have an ipod nano that I bought last year. It has worked fine. Over the last couple weeks, although charging, my computer will not show it in itunes nor recognize it in the finder. I tried placing my usb cord with my Nano on my girlfriends computer and it showed up there but will still not show up on mine. Any answers?

Hmm.. I just checked again trying to put my Nano onto my girlfriends G5. It actually doesn't always show up. At first it didn't and then as I fiddled around with the setting (not changing anything generally) it came on. Hmm.... And then before I could look at it in itunes it went off. Said "Device Removal blah blah blah". Hmm... Then I couldn't get it on again. itunes actually wasn't responding and the ball kept spinning. Then I restarted itunes but it wouldn't come on. I tried the finder but that began to spin too and didn't stop. Even iCal wouldn't come on. So I restarted the computer.

  • Windows does not recognize my Nano.  Is it broken or do I need to reset it.

I used to have iTunes on a different computer than I use now and haven't tried to connect the nano for several months. Now the new computer does not even recognize my Nano (for example, when I run the iPod updater). When I try to connect, I get the 'unrecognized device' error message, then no subsequent recognition. If I try to connect my regular iPod, that works fine. So the issue seems to be with the Nano. Is there a way I can (a) test to make sure it's a Nano problem and (b)fix it without having to send it in for service?
    Thanks for the help.

I have everything working on wireless right now without difficulty. I ran a test with the G4 back on the ethernet and the rest of my machines would not connect. So I tried various channels and no success.
I get a lot more speed on the G4 when it is hardwired versus the Airport b card in it so I was hoping this was a compatible setup
It sounds from your answer that this arrangement should work.
I bought this AEBS from Apple's refurb page a year or so ago. I wonder if this was the condition that caused it to need to be rebuilt in the first place...

  • Windows does not recognize ipod nano, but it charges

Hey. If I plug my ipod into my laptop and computer, it does not recognize my ipod. It pops up a message that says that a unrecognizable usb device has been plugged in. It has, however, worked in the past. The ipod charges, but I'm not able to use it as a flash drive or to upload music or anything like that. What can I do to fix this?

Thanks for the link. It didn't solve the issue on my mother in law's desktop, but it did contain a link to another solution for desktops (and for laptops not helped by the link you provided).
The link reads: "If you don't have a PC laptop or the steps above did not help, see this document for more information."
Essentially, putting the iPod into disc mode caused it to be recognized by XP and all was well.
Anyway, your help is much appreciated as it's particularly difficult for me to work in the Windows enviroment since I so rarely do it.
