Windows with Mac-basic questions

I had been using a my Mac for work; then switched to my notebook PC (Dell, D630) . That becuase I had to use outlook and ACT and a few other programs that are work related.
I would like to update my MacBook to Leopard, and use boot-camp to run Windows when I am on the road etc,or in office mainly to get access to read & do emails and ACT databases while off line.
Can someone assist with following Questions:
1. What do I need to do to update my Macbook. What is recommended memory to support this?
2. After Leopard upgrade, what do I need to do next?
3. If I instal windows 2000, do I have to install windows office too? ie when I am running windows, I need windows office, Outlook etc, etc. ? Is there any degradation of speed or features?
4. If I am in Windows and, for example, I simply download from a received e-mail, an attached MS Word file to store in a Document folder, do I have two folders (one when with Mac OS; the other with Windows? . If I save a doc when the Windows environment, and then later reopen to Mac envioronment , can I still easily get at that Word doc in that common folder? And Vice versa, if I am working, say in Mac Word and I save a file to 'Folder A', if I then later switch & re-open to Windows environment on my Mac at work (example) can I see & get to 'Folder A '.
Thanks,

1. If I load MS Exchange on Mac and run on my MacBook when in the Window XP environment, can I get to MS Exchange as I normally do on notebook PC, does it function in this situation ? Any experience with that?
I presume you mean install Outlook.
Generally Exchange has to be installed on a Windows Server.
When running Windows XP on a Mac in Boot Camp, it is the same (well a little faster) as a Windows PC.
Virtually everything you can do on a Windows PC you will be able to do on a Mac running Windows.
Outlook will install, run and can be configured to work with an Exchange server with no problems.
2. Ditto , ACT. Can I use ACT if I load the application? Any experience with that?
No idea what ACT is.
But if it runs on Windows then it can run on a Mac running Windows.
3. Can I use MS Explorer when under the Windows environment (on the Mac). Limitations?
Yes, no limitations.
If it runs on Windows then it can run on a Mac running Windows.
4. Assume I am in Windows on Mac via Boot Camp. Assume I have MS word etc for Windows . Lets say I get an e-mail with an attached word file or whatever doc. If I then save it to say, ' My office work ,Folder A'. Close the Window environment, and Open Mac , can I get to same folder & open same doc?
Yes, if the Windows partition is FAT32, you will be able to make and save changes.
If the partition is NTFS then you will only be able to read the Word file.
Note when running Windows you can not read the Mac partition unless you have third party tools.
I did get a reply about this item (no. 5) but it had buzz words such as NTFS and FAT VOL, I dont understand that, sorry,
A hard drive (the disk) in order to work with an operating system needs to be formatted.
Windows can use two formats, one called FAT and one called NTFS.
Generally NTFS is preferred when running Windows, but FAT is more compatible with OS X for reading and writing files.

  • Mac and Windows with dual monitors Question

I use a Intel MacPro running Tiger with latest updates in my church. We use the Mac and Keynote 2.0.2 to present PowerPoint slides on the big screen (dual outputs). Everything was going well until the pastors upgraded to new computers running Vista and Office 2007. Now neither pastor's files will load into Keynote. It comes up with an error. The pastors have saved their files from PP as 2003 PPT files, and they still will not open. Error - unable to open file type. The one pastor went back to XP (dumped Vista) but still used the Office 2007 program and saved as PP2003, but the error still appears.
FYI - I noticed that Office 2007 saves with a file with the extension of .pptx instead of the .ppt. Checking the file they gave me shows that it is indead a .ppt file and not .pptx file. It makes no difference.
I believe it is an Office 2007 problem I'm dealing with. I have taken the .ppt file and loaded it onto the PC running PP 2003 and it loads fine, except for some format problems. I then resave it with a different name and tried to load that file (hoping it was converted) , with the same error showing. The problem is transfered with the file. Other files created with the PP 2003 program load fine into Keynote, so it has to be the Office2007 doing something.
So the questions are, is there an easy fix and still use the Keynote program, OR does Keynote 3 take care of this problem in the upgrade, OR should I install Win XP home or Pro and use parallels (which I have)? Would WinXP Home be enough to support the dual outputs and be fast enough? I am familiar with XP Pro not Home.
Any information you may have, could be a help. I need this resolved soon. I hate having to bring in the old Windows PC, after enjoying the quality of the Mac.

Thanks David - glad to here the Mini supports dual monitors, and you're not having any streaming issues. Did you have any special settings, like "no hardware acceleration"? Are you streaming HD content?
If it supports dual monitors, then I would think the iPad could be used as a second display and input device - the demos I've seen with Air Display (from Avatron Software") would accomplish what I'm looking for. Here is a demo at http://www.vimeo.com/16950420 showing the iPad working with a Windows machine, but I've seen them working with Macs as well.

    Hello everyone:
I am using Nikon D610,D800,D7100, all my raw D800 & D7100 can be view in "Mac Basics: Preview" to view photo in file,
but not for my D610 raw don't know what happen it just can't be view, anyone have same problem as I do. At first I thought it was Adobe, but my CS6 update to raw8.3 already, LR change from 4> LR5. So it must be mac itself. I speak with Apple and they tell me to download something like apture hey that's not what I am looking for there, some times I don't want to open my LR to view each photo. So any one have any idea please type here and share it out!
    Thank YOU!

Yup Me too. The files are viewable on my laptop with Mavericks but I am not really interested in updating my computer to Mavericks just so I can view thumbnails. I am assuming that there will be an update that will take care of this?

  • SWITCHING FORM WINDOWS TO MAC- QUICK QUESTION

this is probably a stupid question, but do you have to pay a monthly internet fee with Safari? also, the rest of my family have Windows and they share a Wireless internet box that gives everyone throughout the house with internet...can that be used for a Mac Mini?

To use the same wireless connection the Windows systems currently use, and thus simply add the mini to the same home network, it would be necessary to order the mini with built-in Airport (Apple's name for 802.11 'wifi' technology). The $599 and $699 models both have Airport as standard. The necessary module can be added after purchase, but only by an Apple authorized service agent, at a cost which would be greater than the non-Airport equipped model plus Airport module.

  • Former Windows user has basic questions...

    Hey everyone:
I purchased my first Mac - a black MacBook laptop - last week. Up to this point, I've used Windows PCs. I am getting frustrated with my Mac because I can't figure out some basic navigational functions. Please help!
Is it possible to add a desktop icon to the Dock on my MacBook laptop? I frequently have to access items in the Macintosh HD. On my IBM I could just add a desktop icon to the bottom nav bar or double-click on the desktop itself to access it. On my MacBook end up having to hit F11 to get there. F11 is fine - except that I don't want to close all the open applications windows. Is there a way to either (1) add a desktop (or Macintosh HD) icon to my dock?
Also, is there a way to navigate open application windows easily (i.e. if I have 3 Firefox windows open and want to surf back and forth between them)? I though the apple key + the ~ key would allow that - but it's not working on my laptop.
Also, in Excel - if it possible to navigate to a cell with a formula and click something that highlights the other cells being referenced for the formula? On my IBM, hitting F2 shows the formula and highlights the referenced cells in different colors. My MacBook Excel only shows the formula...
    Thanks!!

    Scatterman,
For Photoshop, you might find this info helpful. Also, you might get everything you need from GIMP (open source, free software that does everything Photoshop will do), or one of the products based on it.
It sounds like you would benefit from some quality time spent just "feeling out" the OS X way of doing things, without necessarily jumping right in and trying to work, work, work. Take a bit more time, and pay attention to the little details that you might otherwise overlook.
For example, Expose. Pressing F11 will not close any windows, but it will quickly "wisk" them off the display so you can grab something on your Desktop. Once grabbed, another press of F11 brings all the windows back, just the way they were, and you can place your grabbed item where you like.
Also, drag and drop is more pervasive, goes way deeper, and is more flexible than in Windows. Items (files, folders, etc.) can be dragged into the Dock, but they can also be to either the Finder's Side Bar (left side) or Tool Bar (top) to create semi-permanent "shortcuts." Selected text in any application window can be dragged out of that window to your Desktop (or anywhere else in the Finder) to create "clippings" that work just like the clipboard (cut and paste), only creating semi-permanent "clipping files" that can be dragged into any other application window. I have entire collections of these "text clippings" that I use to populate my forum replies (instructions, links, commands, etc.).
In general, just about anything you are accustomed to in Windows is available in OS X, but it may look and/or feel different. In the end, however, it usually works better/easier/faster the OS X way. Keep looking, check Help, or ask here, and be patient in the meantime. Before you know it, you'll be an OS X wiz!

  • Switching from Windows to Mac(iTunes question!!)

Okay so I have an account on iTunes and have bought alot of stuff. I have a video iPod and my parents just orderd me a macbook for my birthday. Okay so is there a way I can make sure my library and account and everything can be on my macbook too? One time I tried to plug my iPod into my friends computer to put her shows on my iPod and it went cuckoo.
How can I make sure I move my whole library over to my macbook? xD I'm new at this.

Don't worry about the 'friends computer' situation coming up again. You're working with your own library and you are merely moving it to a different computer. Lots of ways to get your music and video files onto the MacBook.
Your family have a network? (Could be the easiest way.)
You could burn all the files to DVD's or CD's. (You should already have all your media backed up anyways)
As already said, flash drives are also a possibility.
Just copy/move the media files to the macbook. Then authorize the macbook. Authorizing is found under the "Store" iTunes menu item. You can authorize up to 5 computers to play media purchased from the iTunes Store.
You don't have to "take your account" over to the macbook. When you visit the iTunes store when using your macbook just sign in with your existing account ID and password and you'll be good to go.
Hey, enjoy the mac world you are entering. I'm a relatively new adopter and am really happy with it.

  • How delete on Windows with Mac keyboard?

I'm running Windows 7 on my MacBook Pro. I have a Windows program up that I need to use "delete," but nothing seems to work. Any advice?

If you have Acrobat Standard, it is Windows software. You cannot install Windows software on your Mac.
If it was purchased, get a refund.
If it was bundled, then you just can't use it.

  • Can anybody help with these basic questions..?

    Hi friends,
    1)
I am developing a inventory module. As soon as sales man confirms invoice , invoice should be printed on LOCAL printer AND a picking list be printed on NETWORK printer of warehouse. So how can I get/assign a list of printers.
    2) What is the maximum no.of records that can be displayed/entered in a datablock? Is it 250 ? If it is then, is there any way to enter/display more than 250 records in a datablock ? I am using forms5.0. what is the use of TABLE_FROM_BLOCK builtin ?
    thankyou verymuch,
    Mubeenmd

    2) I haven't discovered the limit so far.
You may have thousands of records. Only, be careful how you handle the data, for fetching once thousands of records may choke the network.
    1) Use reports. You should call the desired report using run_product and passing to it a parameter indicating the desname (printer name).

  • Password issues with Mac Mail-help!

I created a new email account through my internet provider (Comcast) and I can no longer access my email although it is showing up on webmail. The comcast person said I would probably have to change my password. I tried doing this on Mac Mail but there doesn't appear to be the usual place to type in new password and then confirm. I am not sure what password they are asking for. The mail account was set up so long ago that I have never used any password when checking my account. I also notice if I delete the password, the password dots are back when I open preferences up again. I don't understand this and Comcast will not help with Mac Mail questions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You said you never used a password when checking you mail. You must have a password on the account, I don't see how you couldn't.
When you go to www.comcast.net and go to the webmail client, you must enter your username and password in order to get your messages. It's this username & password that Apple Mail requires in order to access your email.
If you want/need to change your password, you can do this at www.comcast.net from within the webmail client. When you are at your inbox on the webclient, on the left side of the screen there is a link for "Preferences". Clicking that will take you to another page and one of the options is "Change Your Password". That's where you would go to change your password for that specific email account.
    Good luck,
    Bronson

  • External HDD to be shared with Mac and Windows XP

I wish to share an external HDD via firewire/USB between an ibook G4 on OSX 10.3.9 and Windows XP. Apart from using FAT32 and having partitions for each OS just in case can anyone share any risks considerations I need to be aware of? I intend on having a generic 320Gb Seagate drive installed into an aluminium box but for some reason Lacie seem to be particularly good with Mac's and I can't ascertain why.
ibook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Acer Windows XP

There appears to be some misunderstanding about what systems can read or write what hard drives.
OS X can read and write HPS+ and FAT32 formatted drives, and can read, but not write to NTFS drives. Windows can read and write NTFS and FAT32 drives, and cannot read nor write HPS+ drives. Fresh out of the box the only read/write file sharing is via FAT32 drives.
There are reasonable methods for expanding this capability.
    (1) Windows can be given the ability to read and write HPS+ drives by installing MacDrive 6 on the Windows machine. As far as I know there is no software available which gives OS X the ability to read and write NTFS drives - - maybe it exists or is under develpment somewhere.
    (2) Both OSX and Windows can read/write files that are on a networked file server regardless of the file system used by that file server. The server hides its underlying file system from clients. Just connecting a network capable HDD to a router is NOT the same thing as having a file server on the network - - the same basic file limitations still exist.

Those are not viruses. You have probably installed some malware:
The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using Dr.Web Light from the App Store. It's free, and since it's from the App Store, it won't destabilize the system. If you prefer one of the better known commercial products, then Thomas recommends using Sophos.(Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.) If you already use Sophos, then be aware of this if you are using Mavericks: OS X Mavericks- Sophos Anti-Virus on-access scanner versions 8.0 - 9.1 may cause unexpected restarts
From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect anything targeting the Mac because there
is no Mac malware in the wild, and therefore, no "signatures" to detect.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.

Give your previous partition layout, you cannot install Windows via Bootcamp, unless you are willing to give up all your extra partitions and go back to EFI, OS X and RecoveryHD only configuration.

    1. Windows installer will not work and you will end up with driver issues.
    2. No.
    3. You cannot, but if you could, the Apple Bootmanager would be your Boot Manager/Loader.
