Windows XP bootcamp'd iMac rediculously slow to load

My girlfriend recently bought the new quad core 27" iMac, and I have just finished installing windows XP on it. Once I get into xp, it works fine (although Ive only spent about 30mins in it so far).
However, after holding down the option key to enter the boot selection screen on startup, I see the cursor as expected, but it takes about 5 minutes before the two HDs come up and I am allowed to make a selection. Then, after I press enter, it takes another 5-10 minutes to actually pass control over to Windows.
Why in the world is it taking so freaking long for control to be passed over to Windows? I myself have a previous generation 24" iMac, and I never had such a problem with windows XP (I am even using the exact same copy of XP)
I am at the moment trying to load up windows (Im writing this on another computer) and so far, I pressed Enter about 10 minutes ago and I still have the same screen, unresponsive.

Well, upon some hefty google work, Ive found that a few people have been having similar problems. Usually, the problem lies within out-of-date drivers, especially for peripherals left plugged in during boot-up. In my case, I had an external USB HD plugged in while I was entering the boot prompt screen, which could possibly cause a delayed start-up.
However, perhaps the greatest tidbit of advice, was a certain key combination. Apparently, pressing/holding -- appleoption+PR -- as soon as the boot chime sounds, and then keeping the keys pressed down until the computer restarts and you hear the chime again significantly speeds up the boot cycle.
I have no idea what it does nor how/why it works, but after I did this (and unplugged the external HD) the boot prompt behaved in a way I would expect of a quadcore/8gb ram iMac; fast.
So, my advice to others if they have this problem is to try the following in this order:
- install all windows drivers for absolutely anything your computer uses
- boot with nothing besides a mouse and keyboard connected
- depress appleoption+PR at the boot chime and hold until you hear another boot chime.
worked for me! thank you google!

  • Safari Slow to load, despite high speed internet

Lately I've been having an issue where web pages are rediculously slow to load and Itunes downloads are coming in at a crawl. Speedtest.net gave me high results at 15mbps dowload 2mbps upload but a 50 mb podcast was going to take 45 hrs to download. I've tried clearing caches and resetting Safari but this hasn't helped. Any suggestions?

    Try this:
The following usually works on both Tiger and Leopard:
(First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl.)
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
    form values
    download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.
If not, MacFixit have published a very detailed (very!) article on speeding up a slow Safari, here:
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070416000657464
Many, including me, have also followed the advice given by others here to add DNS codes to their Network Settings, with good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
    Restart Safari, and repair permissions.

  • I currently run Windows 7 on my iMac using the Parallels software on a Virtual Machine. I now wish to use Windows through bootcamp. How do I remove windows from the Virtual Machine

I currently run Windows 7 on my Imac through a Virtual Machine format with the Parallels software. I now wish to remove Windows from the VM restore the Hard Drive to a single partition then install windows 7 using bootcamp. How do I go about it

The virtual machine isn't a partition on your hard drive, it's just a file. You can delete the vm by going into Paralells preferences or just drag t to the trash. Bootcamp will partition your hard drive for a Win 7 install.

  • Installing Windows on Bootcamp on new iMacs (late 2012)

I absolutely love the new iMacs. They seem a good bit faster than my current 2009 model and make a nice upgrade for our home I am wondering about a few things, and hopefully someone here can help me get some answers on it.
With the old iMacs I have never been able to install Windows on Bootcamp via a USB stick/HD. Since the Superdrive is removed with the new iMacs, I'm hoping that that function is finally activated… currently that function is only activated (in the EFI from what I learned) on the MacBook Pro's and Air's. I have tried to install Windows 7 from various USB sticks and HD's on several different iMacs. Some USB sticks and HD's do properly install Windows when I try the same thing via a MacBook, so the sticks and HD's are not the issue
Does anyone have some insight in this? I don't really feel like buying the Apple USB Superdrive, which officially is not even supported on iMacs, júst to install Windows for my occassional PC game. So basically, does anyone know wether or not it's possible to install Windows on Bootcamp via a USB stick or HD on the newly released iMacs?

    I would think so
but rather then trying to have it verified in the imac forum I would ask in the bootcamp forum if I were you

This is an old problem I once ran into, but it's completely unrelated to SP1 which is the purpose of this thread.

Your profile says you are using Snow Leopard. There is no Windows Support software download for Snow Leopard. The Windows Support software is on your Snow Leopard Install Disk.
Read the Snow Leopard Installation Instructions http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/Boot_Camp_Install-Setup_10.6.pdf

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You are running Snow Leopard. On Snow Leopard, you can't download the Boot Camp drivers from Apple because you have got drivers on the Snow Leopard DVD that came with your Mac or you bought. Just skip the step to download drivers

If your system is Core2Duo or better, use 64-bit.  32-bit only sees 3.5 GB RAM max.  64-bit Home sees 16 GB RAM max, and 64-bit Pro sees 192 GB RAM max.

  • How to have Snow Leopard, Mavericks with built-in recovery, and Windows 7 (Bootcamp) on my iMac (Intel)?

I would like to have Snow Leopard, Mavericks with built-in recovery, and Windows 7 (Bootcamp) on my iMac (Intel).  Is this possible?  If so, how?  Currently, I have Snow Leopard and Windows 7 (Bootcamp) running on my iMac.  I have enough disk space to split my Snow Leopard partition.  I have read that if I split my Snow Leopard partition, clone my Snow Leopard partition to the new partition, and boot to the new partition, that I may have problems with the Maverick's upgrade because it may not be able to create the recovery parition, or that it may erase the Windows partition, or that it may mess up the Windows boot process.

Simplest is to install Mavs on an ext HD, using FW or TB. I don't do windoze, so can't advise about the Boot Camp and multiple volumes issue. Since there's no Boot Camp, I have four volumes running SL through Mavs.

    Hi,
Although installing the printer on Windows by using Bootcamp may work, it is not guaranteed...
The windows OS actually being installed as a virtual envoirnment, which means your Windows OS is using your Mac OS USB drivers as the host, and not those intended for Windows.
Therefore it is not being recognized by the software.
