Windows XP hangs while booting

Hi everybody
I am currently experiencing severe Windows XP SP2 boot problems!
My system is a MacBook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz. Here is some more system Information:
* Model Identifier: MacBookPro3,1
* Boot ROM Version: MBP31.0070.B02
* SMC Version: 1.16f8
* RAM: 4GB
I have installed MacOS X (10.5.1) and Bootcamp. In addition I have installed Windws XP SP2 (German). Currently use and have installed NO additional hardware drivers apart from the BootCamp ones.
The system hangs sporadically when I boot (using Boot camp) under windows. Windows XP freezes mostly during the initial startup (before the log-in). Sometimes however it freezes after I have logged in and have performed a few operations. These hang-ups happen almost 95% percent of the time. Yet after a couple of new starts and safe mode boots I am able to log in. I would also like to mention that I cannot log in when I boot at safe mode because the built-in MBP keyboard does not work; so I just stop at the log in screen and restart.
thanks for the help in advance

I just fixed a Dell Inspiron laptop with a similar boot hang problem. The machine would hang if the iPod was plugged in the USB port, or even a powered USB hub. The machine is 5 years old and is USB 1.1
The machine would hang in the boot sequence right before it would go to Windows start part. I took USB completely out of the boot sequence and that didn't do it. What did do it, based on a suggested fix from a Dell guy.
With the iPod unplugged, here is the Dell suggestion which might help some but not this Dell (keep reading below for the fix that worked):
1. Restart the System. (Unplug the IPod from the system)
2. Tap <F2> at the Dell Logo to access the BIOS.
3. Go to the Advanced Tab, and disable the USB legacy support.
4. Save the changes and exit.
But on the 1100 that I was working on, it had a older bios and used the Alt-P procedure to page through BIOS options. On page 3, there was a USB Emulation option. If you read the description, there is no way one would think that this would have an effect. I changed this to Disabled and that allowed the machine to boot with the iPod plugged in.
I hope this helps someone. If your machines hangs before windows starts, get into the BIOS and go to work!! Tom [email protected]

  • Windows XP hangs on boot, computer heats up

    Hi,
I recently had my Nvidia card replaced in my Mac Book Pro, OSX 10.4.11 and since then tried to boot up Windows XP with Bootcamp. Windows XP hangs on booting and the computer heats up incredibly quickly. Does anyone know why I can't boot in Windows or how to fix this? The mac partition works fine and I can access my documents etc from windows through the mac side. But I do need to run certain programs on Windows. Any help is appreciated.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
first thing I would try are the Safe Boot Options of XP described here http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B315222&x=10&y=11 and especially the 'enable VGA' option to ensure that XP is okay.
While in Safe Boot maybe deinstalling the Nvidia graphics driver currently installed can help.
Might be that because of the replacement, the new one isn't correctly detected.
    Hope it helps
    Stefan

  • Windows 7 hangs from boot menu

    Hi,
my Windows 7 partition refuses to start from boot menu, system just hangs and does nothing. I've not made any changes to the disk layout, only thing I can think of is the upgrade to 10.9.4 which probably changed the recovery partition.
    History:
    - iMac Mavericks 10.9.3 with boot camp 5.1.2 and Windows 7, used to start into Windows by pressing Alt on start up, then reboot from Windows menu or from Windows boot camp application into OS X and back without problems
    - installed the 10.9.4 Build 13E28 upgrade some days ago
    - Change today: rebooted from the boot camp system tray app into OS X, worked without a problem
    - reboot from OS X into boot menu, select Windows 7 partition, system hangs
I've found this thread, describing a similar problem Repairing Boot Camp after creating new partition I think, however since my Index output only lists 4 partitions I think my problem might be a bit different.

I guess something mixed up the MBR since I would have expected line 4 of the fdisk output to show something 'Windows' like instead of HPFS/QNX/AUX, but even if that is correct, the question is how can the boot problem be fixed?
The Windows partition is accessible from OS X, so copying the data is not a problem if everything else fails. As far as I remember, the boot camp version in windows is 3.3 (it's an older iMac model).
GDisk is available, command line not a problem, if you need any further info let me know, any help appreciated.
    thanks,

    Hi,
    > Does the Bootcamp partition show up in Finder and can you see files in it?
Yes, the partition shows up in Finder and I can see and copy files.
    > In Disk Utility, does the Bootcamp partition report as NTFS?
Yes it does, "Get Info" from Finder also reports it as a NTFS volume.
    > Do you have any third party NTFS drivers?
Yes I have, Paragon NTFS tools.
    > If you hold the ALT key can you boot into Windows?
No, system just hangs and needs to be rebooted via power-off.
    > If you came from 10.9.3 to 10.9.4, the Recovery HD should have existed under 10.9.3.
Yes it did, I did a clean install from USB media when Mavericks came out, the Recovery HD is also visible - and has been - in the boot menu.
    > The one strange part is that your volume says "Windows 7". Were any diskutil commands run to change volume names?
No, just a left click on the Volume Name in Finder and then change Bootcamp to Windows 7.

So, you think running the Windows startup repair will fix the problem? Is there something that I should be aware of in terms of interfering with the OS X partition?

  • Windows 7 hangs on Boot up with smartboard USB plugged in.

    Hi All
I am having a problem with our dual booting Imacs. When we boot up into windows 7 the mac just hangs for about 5 minutes. I have narrowed this down to our smartboards being plugged into the mac once we remove the USB it boots up no problems with no hangs.
We have updated boot camp to 3.2 and updated the device drivers to the latest version but it still hangs.
Has anyone come across this problem before? Or a similar problem?
    Any help appreciated.
    Scott

    Hi Erica
No it is not a mass storage device it is a smartboard which is plugged in. Do you think this could be a drivers problem?

  • T400 with Windows 7 hangs on boot

This problem crops up every couple of months. After installing something, including Windows updates, the thing appears to re-boot properly. However it hangs immediately as soon as I try to launch any application. Nothing at all works. Sometimes I can re-boot in safe mode and roll back the system, but sometimes the only way to get the thing working is to hand it over to the techs who re-install Windows. Has anybody else seen this problem? I have googled it for months but come up empty. Thanks.

run the hdd diagnostic tool from the bios menu.

  • Dual G5 hangs while booting from internal hard-disk

    Hi,
When I switched my Dual G5 (2x2.5GHz around 15 months old, 1.5GB ram, 160GB hard disk, OS 10.4.6) on yesterday, it wouldn't boot from the internal hard disk. The spinning "wheel" (under the Apple logo) didn't show up and after a couple (5? 10?) of minutes the fans started making more noise than they ever did. I tried again with the same result.
It did boot from CD though and the disk was accessible. Disk Utility didn't report a problem and the hardware test neither. Subsequent rebooting from the internal hard disk failed again.
Then I reinstalled 10.4 (with archive & install), but with the same result. Then I got a Firewire drive from the computer support department, formatted it, installed 10.4 and copied (nearly) the entire internal hard disk's content to it. I was able to work normally from that disk.
Then I booted again from the 10.4 installation disk, formatted the internal drive, reinstalled 10.4 and then it did boot from the internal drive. I migrated all my files and now everything is working again (although a few things might have gone missing). And I lost nearly a day of work.
I conclude from this that it wasn't the disk, but that somehow an essential part of the boot software got damaged.
My question: how did this happen? What could have caused it? Is there someone with a similar experience (i.e., failure to boot from disk while the disk is still ok)? Is there any way to prevent it from happening again?

we have g5s the same as you. the few times we've ever had an issue with them refusing to boot up have been solved by running diskwarrior. it's an utter 'must have'.
it's a harsh fact that drives (and the operating system that sits on them) do fail from time to time. careful housekeeping (repairing permissions regularly, running disk utility repair and/or diskwarrior) will help to prevent any major problems.
if you have an issue that can't be fixed by doing these things (and we just had one with a file sharing problem) the best course of action is a full reinstall.
we keep a fw800 drive with the latest installers of every application we use handy in each room for this purpose. it's time consuming to stay on top of but worth it when it all goes pear-shaped.

  • Screen hangs while booting from Install disk

I'm trying to install 10.3.1 using my original disks onto an iBook G4 I bought from eBay that has 10.3.9 on it. The iBook works fine, but I don't have the administrator password and the seller has long along stopped answering my emails. I'm installing 10.3.1 simply to do a clean install and reset the admin passwords.
However, when I startup and press 'C' and insert the disk, the computer hangs on the initial Gray screen with the Apple. There's no whirling dial. It's just a frozen screen. In fact, the apple looks off center and I can see a thin strip of multi-color pixels. It doesn't do that when it boots up from the hard drive.
    Any ideas about what's wrong?
    iBook G4

    Hi Kaushik!
If the Panther install CDs, look like THESE, they should work.
But, if you used those same CDs, to install Panther on another Mac, that is still using that OS, it is against the Software Liscense Agreement, to install it on the iBook.

  • Solution: iTunes 10.6.0.40 on Windows 7 hangs while syncing

I was trying to Sync Audiobooks to my iPod nano (6th gen) but iTunes 10.6.0.40 (on Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP 1) just stopped being responsive after pressing Apply and it showing "preparing to sync" in the status window.  The nano went into sync mode for about 5 seconds but then returned to Connected state. iTunes.exe *32 was running at 100% (on one CPU) and did not even appear to begin the sync. [This state was also entered as soon as I set the "Manually manage music and videos" on the Device's Summary page.]
After (wasting) many hours of trying the standard support instructions to uninstall everything from Apple Inc. - iTunes, then Apple Software Update, then Bonjour, then Apple Mobile Device Support, then Apple Application Support - then download (another) copy of iTunes64Setup.exe, then install iTunes - the answer came ...
A very pleasant, helpful support rep (for case 298676734) thought to try the DOS command "netsh winsock reset" as suggested by wiclee in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3559328 and sodaboy581 in https://discussions.apple.com/message/16361402#16361402. More explanation of this fix can be found at What does "netsh winsock reset" do? and Repair/Reset Winsock settings.
I suggest you try this first!!    Hopefully this discussion has enough fo the right tags to help others find this fix!

  • How do I access the music from my Mac drive while booted into Windows?

How do I access the music from my Mac drive while booted into Windows via Bootcamp? I tried using MacDrive but it's not supported for Vista 64-bit edition. Is there another program out there that I can use? I just want to be able to access my music that's on Leopard while in Vista. Any advice will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Your best bet is to move the music on the Windows side since Leopard will be able to read and play the music from the mounted Windows drive (Leopard will not be able write anything to the Windows NTFS partition).
In your case it won't work the other way around.

Long story short: Simply get CC for teams. At 500 bucks a year it's a steal and those 5 licenses in the base package (or was it 10 even?) cover all your computers, at least the 3 ones you mentioned. For system requirements refer to the individual product pages.

  • [~SOLVED] 1 min hang during boot while mounting xfs partitions (LVM)

    Hi all,
After the upgrade I did yesterday (which included linux-3.12.8-1 and lvm2), the boot time has increased by 1 minute as the system hangs while mounting two partitions formatted as xfs and residing on logical volumes.
    $ systemd-analyze blame
    1min 13.676s home-VDP76-videos.mount
    1min 13.111s home-VDP76-VBox_VMs.mount
    2.980s [email protected]
I have the fsck hook as second-to-last entry in my mkinitcpio.conf, but the fstab entries for these partitions include
    ... xfs defaults 0 0
so, as far as I undertstand, the partitions should not be checked, am I missing something!?
I have googled for similar issues but I did not find anything useful, any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
edit: I blame the check disk because of what reported on the system journal (note the time stamps):

I should also add that the involved partitions are ~20 Gb each and quite full...
edit2: I have freed up almost all space on the video partition and the time for mounting those partitions has now decreased to 8 sec...I will mark the thread as solved, but I still would appreciate an input on the reasons why the partitions are checked regardless of the fstab setting, for example, is this pertinent!?

exactly..in fact the man page says
    fsck.xfs(8) wrote:fsck.xfs - do nothing, successfully
so fsck.xfs simply exits with a zero exit status.
    running xfs_check gives
xfs_check is deprecated and scheduled for removal in June 2014.
    Please use xfs_repair -n <dev> instead.
and xfs_repair does not find errors on both partitions.
Still, I do not understand how nothing being done can take up so much time.
By the way, a short S.M.A.R.T. self-test did not report errors...
In the meanwhile, there has been another kernel upgrade and the timing issue persists, so I am assuming it has something to do with the last lvm2 upgrade.
