Windows XP Home File Protections Prevent Sync
I have a Palm Vx, and have used it since 1999 with the same PC (!) which was converted many years ago to Windows XP. I just bought a newer computer, also running XP Home. I have had a lot of trouble installing software on it because my ancient computer had a FAT32 file system on it, and the new one is NTFS. Apparently, FAT32 had no bit for setting the read-only attribute for files, so any account could read and write almost anywhere.
Now, I have installed my Palm 3.1 desktop (I also tried 4.1.4). As long as I have Administrator privileges, everything works great. But if I use a limited account, I cannot get to my profile. When I try to hotsync, it asks if I want to create a new account on the PC, and when I do, it completes the hotsync but cannot access the profile.
There doesn't seem to be any way with XP Home to cause read-only files to be made readable - this is a well-known bug that was never fixed (even using attrib does not work). Is there any way to tell the software to put the profiles in another folder that is writeable?
Post relates to: Palm Vx
Thanks! That works after some playing around. The additional part I discovered you need is this:
1) Give your user account admin rights
2) Install the Palm Desktop logged in as that user
3) Make sure the Admin account (not necessarily the user account) on the computer has a password
4) Set the options for palm.exe (right-click on palm.exe, under Properties...) so that it can execute as another user
5) Take away the admin rights to the user account
Now, when starting the desktop, it should ask if it should run as you or another user. Leave the box checked to run as you, but uncheck the box "Protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity." The desktop will then come up and XP/Home protections have been circumvented. Set the program directory to a writeable folder, and a hotsync will work and the data will appear in the desktop.

Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit - Not syncing media
I'm migrating myself from an HP laptop that will sync my Centro contact/addresses/media etc. The HP runs XP Pro. I'm moving to a Sony which runs Windows Vista Home. And I am able to sync most everything but the media. None of my pictures/video or any media will transfer from my phone to my laptop. I've read about currupt media and since it transfers to my HP, I'm thinking I'm good. I currently have my /media/ to overwrite from my phone to my pc. I'm wondering what I am missing.
Post relates to: Centro (Sprint)Palm does not support 64-bit Vista for cabled Hotsyncs.
There is a huge Vista64 bit thread at the top of this section explaining your options - BlueTooth Hotsync is about the only way you can procede with a Centro.

Windows 7 offline files do not sync real time while online?
I have network folders setup for use offline. When im online and another user deletes files from those folders, i dont see those deletions until i reboot or force a manual sync. How do you make that to show real time. So that when another user deletes files
in folders i have set to use offline... however im online connected/authenticated to the network, i can see those changes real time.
thanks,Wow, nearly two years since this question was posted and still no worthwhile contribution from Microsoft.
We are also seeing behavior similar to this. We're running Windows 7 clients on a SBS 2011 network. We are not doing folder redirection, but rather we have users taking certain file shares offline to work from home or on the road (works much
better/faster than the VPN). However, when they get back to the office occasionally they find themselves editing the same file another user is, or referring another user to check out a file they created while offline which is not actually in the share.
Turns out their PC is using the local cache and not the network cache for some file access, but it insists that the user is working online. Typically if the user forces a manual sync and resolves any conflicts or errors that arise, they can be 99 percent
sure they are working online for real, but without double-checking against open files on the server there's really no way to know for sure. This has absolutely destroyed user confidence in this technology which used to work OK (where this is concerned
anyway - it still had some flaws) in Windows XP.
I saw a post in the partner forum where a moderator basically said "oh yeah, I can totally reproduce that in my lab and that's a shame...try Sharepoint." Absurd.
Seems like Microsoft is basically taking the stance that Offline Files is only worth using for folder redirection where only one user is likely to be using the files. If that's the case then as long as the data syncs eventually it's probably not
a huge deal that this happens. If, however, you're using Offline Files to sync a shared directory this can have disastrous consequences with documents being edited simultaneously for hours or even days before finally someone realizes the problem and
then one user or the other gets to redo their changes.
If they can't make them work right, then they could at least give us more transparencey so the user can see what's going on. I hated the stupid "you are now working offline" popups in Windows XP as much as the next guy, but I'd kill to get them
back now, if only to avoid this stuff. When a user browses to their share that's been made "always available offline" and it says "Offline status: Online" then it should be using files from the LAN, not the cache. -

I'm no longer able to sync contacts, calendar or notes from my computer's Outlook using iTunes. For a while I was getting a message that the server could not be reached for resolving conflicts - probably got that message every sync for a month or so and just ignored it. Then I followed online instructions for dealing with that problem and renamed the file conflicts.syncconflict. The instructions suggested that this would cause creation of a new conflicts.synconflict file, which it did. But then the sync just seemed to hang on the contacts portion of syncing, even if I left it for a couple of hours. So I renamed the old file back to conflicts.synconflict.
Now sync doesn't work at all for me if I try to sync any of Outlook contacts, calendar or notes. If I disable all those, the sync works for things like apps, etc.
I have already tried:
checking latest version of iPhone software
in iTunes, clicking edit / preferences/ devices / reset sync history (not sure whether this button really does anything or not)
using outlook's scanpst.exe to check for corruption of my main outlook files and most of my ancillary folders
resetting the iPhone (pressing the button upper right and the circular button at the bottom for several seconds)
trying the sync after rebooting the computer and not turning on Outlook in the interim
The present symptom is that the attempted sync just hangs on the syncing contacts stage, and won't complete. I can cancel the sync, but I can't complete it (unless I uncheck syncing with all the Outlook data). I'm not getting any error message.
This is what I'm using:
iPhone 5
iTunes version 11.1.5.5
iPhone software Version 7.1 (11D167)
Windows 7 Home premium
Outlook 2010
Asus G74SX computer
It is March 27, 2014.
Suggestions welcome. I'd like to be able to sync my contacts and calendar.Hey Steve,
I had this problem as well and found a way how to solve this:
You need to reset your iPhone by pressing the Home button and the Power button simultaneously until the iPhone reboots.
After it rebooted I unlocked the phone, connected it to my PC and ran the iTunes sync without any problems.
Hope this helps with your issue as well.
Best

You asked what I meant about saving the installer on your PC.
When you go to the iTunes download page:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
And click on download, you should be offered the choice of running the installer or saving it. You need to click on save and then choose a folder on you PC where you want it saved. But I think you already did that.
After the installer file - iTunessetup.exe - is save on your computer, you double click on it to run it.
It's very odd that the installer fails at different stages. usually when the installation fails, it is at a specific stage and usually generates an error message.
I am afraid I am mystified. Have you had any other problems with your PC which might suggest a general problem not specific to iTunes?
The only other suggestion I have is to download a fresh copy of the installer - in case it got corrupted. You could also try using "run as administrator" to run the installer. It should be an option if you right click on the installer file.
The other thing it might be worth trying is to install it from another account, but you would need to create another administrator account if you don't a;ready have one. Or if you have another account that is not an admin account, you can temporarily promote it from the control panel>>User accounts. -
I have a Windows XP Home Edition computer. I recently attempted to upgrade iTunes to v10.7. It loaded and installed OK, but now it won't run. When I try to launch it, it gets aborted by the windows Data Execution Prevention software. Any ideas?
Yes, this did solve the problem. But I had some trouble updating QuickTime. It failed, with the installer complaining that it did not have the required permissions to install the files it needed in the program directory. I got it to work by telling it to install the files to another directory. All seems well now - Thanks!

Windows 7 Home Premium OEM iso file
Hellowhen i bought this laptop it didnt have any recovery disks in the packetmy brother formated the HDD from a friends windows cd but the product key didnt work (i dont know why my bro did it)and now he has pirate windowsI the bottom of the laptop there is an OEM key for windows 7 home premium x64but i dont have the .iso file to recover it neither i have recovery disks(im not sure i ll search if i have created some disks myself for recovery long ago..im not sure...i did it with the recovery manager that was preinstalled...i ll search them..do they work)and if u have any .iso file for Windows 7 home premium OEM could u send it to me? thnk u sincerelly
correct me if i am wrong you can order the restore disc from hp if the device is less than 5 years old or less depending how far hp will go back since so many new PCs and hp may go less that 5 years and you may need to order outside of HP support as for the pirate windows and this miscrosoft will not allow you any MsUpdates on their website and pirated copys of windows are a spell for trouble with glitched or security issues protecting your PC if it were me and i would use the restore disc to get the PC back where it was from the manufacture pre-installation

WAV Files won't play on Windows Vista Home Premium
We have a HP Desktop PC running Windows Vista Home Premium. Just recently, certian sound files quit playing. We also noticed that the system sounds quit working as well. After looking into it more, I figured out that the drivers are all up to date, that iTunes plays music just fine, and that the internal error beeper in the tower replaced the error.wav when an error window pops up. I have run defragment, check disk, and other system scanners. None of these seemed to help. Does anyone know what the problem may be?
Have you checked the HP Website and Microsoft Support websites to see if they have any solutions to your problem? Since there could be multiple things causing this, I would check at the places I mentioned first and see if their knowledge base contains an answer.

Windows Media Player Doesn't play video files or DVDs (Windows 7 Home Premium)
Hello,
I recently purchased a new hard drive and installed Windows 7 Home Premium on it. Since then, Windows Media Player has not been able to play any kind of video files or DVDs. I have tried using the Fixit tool and turning the WMP off and on with the Windows
Features menu, but it has not solved the problem. I have also made sure that my video and audio drivers are up to date.
The errors that come up say:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or a required codec might not be installed on your computer.
and
Windows Media Player cannot play DVD video. You might need to adjust your Windows display settings. Open display settings in Control Panel, and then try lowering your screen resolution and color quality settings.
Any help with this would be great, because I like using WMP better than other media players.Hi,
Firstly, please try to use the Video example in C:\Users\Public\Videos\Sample Videos if it could play normally.
Secondly, try to reinstall Graphic Card driver for test.
If problem persists, try to remove WMP in Windows feature and add it again for test.
