Windows XP Home with SP2 QUESTION

I've been searching for the answer for the past 45 minutes and can't seem to find it on the net. I turn to you now - as I've had good luck having my questions answered on this forum.
Here we go :
I've just ordered Windows XP Home Edition with SP2 from Amazon.com and would like to know how many PC's can I install it on simultaniously without running into any kind of problems. Someone told me that it's up to 2 separate computers that it can be installed on - I just wanted to make sure, since I want to use it on my MacBook and my girlfriends MacBook as well.
Thank you in advance for your time and help

you probably need to purchase an additional license, unless you don't plan to run windows update on one of the computers. if you go through with the whole registration, microsoft will probably disable one of the computer's key, at which point I think windows will stop working after 30 days.

  • Error message downloading j2se 1.5.0 on windows XP home edition (SP2)

    Hello:
I am getting the following error message attempting to install the j2se 5.0 on my windows XP home edition (SP2):
    "Error JavaTM installer
The installer cannot continue because the files necessary for installation are unavailable. If trying to install a beta or older version please check http://java.sun.com/j2se to determine if it is still supported. If so please try installing at a later time as these file might be only temporarily unavailable."
    There is a bug report:
    Bug ID: 6237992
Tested Bundle: 5.0u2_b09 JDK iftw on staging site
    http://webwork.sfbay/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp
    Tested O/S: XP-Home (sp2)
    Problem:
The installer throws error messages. I tried on three different
XP-Home (sp2) machines in our lab. It throws error message the very first or second time and after that, it seems to work fine.
    Steps to reproduce:
    1) On XP-Home(sp2) machine, try to download and install the JDK iftw bundle from
    http://webwork.sfbay/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp
    2) During the installation the first or second time, one of the following messages thrown:
    A) "This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and than you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package"
    B) Error - Java Installer
"This installer cannot continue because the files necessary for installation are unavailable. If trying to install a beta or older version, please check http://java.sun.com/j2se to determine if it is still supported. If so, please try installing at a later time, as these files might be only temporary unavailable"
This problem seems to occur on XP-Home(sp2). When error message pops up, keep trying it, it 's eventually OK. It may confuse consumers at the first two times.
    xxxxx@xxxxx 2005-03-09 05:11:47 GMT"
I have tried the downloading five times to no avail, both by double clicking, and using the windows run utility. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

I am getting the same error when opening the J2se Development Kit 5.0 Update 8 after I press the Run button. ( "This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and than you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package").
    Is there a solution ?
    Thanks,

  • System Update Problems - Windows XP 64bit with SP2

    Hi,
I have been Googling away but can't seem to fix my error when running System Update 3.14 on Windows XP 64bit with SP2. I keep getting the following error at 9-10%:
"An error occurred while gathering user information"
Has anyone managed to get this working on this OS?
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling and also uninstalling .NET 3.5 but nothing has worked.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
x64 Bit XP is not supported by TVSU, so I really doubt, that there is an official fix for this one.
    Cheers

  • Can I use Windows XP Home with Boot Camp and/or Parallels or VMFusion?

I am planning on purchasing a new Mac Mini with Snow Leopard. I have a copy of Windows XP Home Edition that came with a 7 year old Compac computer, can it be used with either Boot Camp and/or Parallels or VMFusion? I REALLY don't want to purchase Windows if I can help it. Thanks!

Read the boot camp requirements. I believe you will need a Windows disc that is stand alone. By that I mean a Windows disc that is not designed for a specific computer like your Compac. I believe that applies for Parallels and Fusion as well. Some of the newer disc that come with new computers may work since some of them are stand alone. I think your compac disc maybe married to your computer. You can try it when you get your Mac but it may not work.

  • Can't Create or Organise Folders on Windows XP Home with a Zen Sleek (2

Any idea why my home computer, which has Windows XP home version, won't give me the option of creating new folders or dragging/dropping files in and out of folders when I open the Zen Sleek dri've on 'My Computer'? And yet on my daytime computer (with XP Pro) it's as easy as anything to open new folders, drag and drop, etc. I, perhaps foolishly, installed all the extra software at home that came with my Creative Zen Sleek thinking this would surely solve the problem, thinking surely somewhere in all that stuff I would find a programme allowing me to open folders and re-organise my files....but no. The screens just remain sort of 'frozen', not allowing such basic functions. Please -- any clues as to the way forward here? Many thanks to the community for all the help on these boards!

Me again -- just looked at all my files in my Zen Sleek - none of the folders are there. Am I totally off base? Is the Zen system just something other entirely than folder based? Where does a newbie get up to speed? Many thanks.

  • Installing Windows XP Home with help of Boot Camp

I didn't find answer for my problem in FAQ, so i think that the best would be to ask here ...
I just bougth new Windows XP Home Edition installer CD (Service Pack 2 ofcourse). Downloaded Boot Camp, installed it, ect.
The problem is when i need to start the Windows Installer. I insert a CD, icon appear on descop, and i click in Boot Camp "Start Installation". Then i have something like this:
"The installer CD could not be found.
Insert your Windows CD and wait a few seconds for the disc to be recognized."
So i wait ... And nothing.
I made all updates what i needed. So what is the problem ? Is there any "special" Windows CD for Mac's ? Or i need some program to read this CD ?
PS: I'm using Boot Camp Beta v1.2

I have the same issue with an all English setup.
To rule out a bad CD (never mind, it's a brand new XP Pro) I burned two new CDs using the individual files that I had copied onto a harddrive first and a bootloader that I had extracted from the original CD. Yet, the result is the same.
Also, the Mac does recognize the CD (I can browse and view files on it)...just that error that the installer CD could not be found wouldn't go away.

  • Trouble with Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 x64

    Hello everyone
My system is in a very big mess. I'm using Ideapad y550 and recently I was hit by the continuous restart cycle. I updated my windows as usual and after a system restart as part of the update processs, windows just kept on restarting. "configuring updates part 3" and it would always be at 0%. Anyway, I searched the internet and came across a solution. I downloaded a Vista recovery disc (since Lenovo did not provide me with one) and went to command prompt and deleted a certain file that was causing this restart loop. Now, after that day I have been hit with more problems. Here
    1) windows does not update anymore. Always shows "searching for updates" and is stuck there forever
    2) "turn windows feature on/off" box is always empty.
    3) "sfc /scannow" does not work anymore. gives a "windows protection error" or something similar.
    4) I failed to install Microsoft Office 2010 as it gives this error "Error 1935 - HRESULT: 0x8007054F". I am stuck with no office application as I deleted office 2007 to install this and cannot do my university work!
    5) windows has gotten extremely slow.
ok that is a huge list, I know. Could someone please help me? I am really lost right now and going back to factory settings is not an option since I do not have backup. I'm ready to try everything to avoid that. Any ideas anyone?
Thanks so much for your efforts

clean windows installation will delete all the files you have on volume c:
i didn't suggest you to repair, cause i don't think it'll help, but you can try.
just use windows repair to save your personal files, after then perform clean installation not to have any other issue(s).

  • Windows XP Home w/SP2 disk ejected before recognizing

After partitioning my 100GB hardrive (25GB partition for BOOTCAMP) I put in my XP disk, the drive spooled approx 3 times then ejected the disc. The disc itself is clean, just out of the packaging (OEM version) and I have not had any previous problems with my drive. Any tips?

    Success!!!
OK I have no idea why is is suddenly working but it is!
As I mentioned in my earlier post I could not get vm fusion to recognise the windows vista DVD either. I thought I would post this problem to them so I tried it one more time. The only difference is that I was logged on to my mac as a non-admin user. I meant to put the copy dvd in (see my post above) as I did not expect the original disk to mount on the mac - it had not done before. However I got a little confused and put the original disk in. I realised and then waited for it to automatically eject but it mounted!!!
As I had aleady started to use the bootcamp assistant the hard drive was already partitioned so I just hit the install windows (or whatever) option. It was not exactly as I expected - the partition had to be reformatted to nfts for vista and the install seemed to loop and start again and again but after quitting it seems to have installed without issues (perhaps an xp install will be easier). I loaded osx and then started fusion and it recognised my bootcamp partition and not I have vista under osx too! I have not had time to test things properly but it seems OK.
Like I said at the start I have no idea why this started to work (other than perhaps a different user) but it did so I am happy. One final note, I have restarted as 10.5.1, logged in as the admin user and this time the disk mounts too. From this I assume the user does not matter - perhaps there is some 'coating' or something on the disk and this needs to wear for the imac dvd drive to recognise the disk???? sounds like BS I know but I can't explain this any other way.
My advice is try this again and again - also try reading the dvd in a windows pc if possible.
    Good luck with your install!

  • Recover Windows XP Home with Microsoft XP CD

The OS XP Home Edition on a Toshiba Satelite Laptop broke down with very important datas. I try to recover the system with an original XP Professional CD to safe the datas. During the process an administrator password is requested but I do not know wether this is the usual login password or something else.
Can you please tell me which password I need
or do you know any better way to safe my important datas?
    Thank you!

he does not have to recover, he has to REPAIR,
if you have the XP RETAIL version not the one that comes with Toshiba...
you have to pretend you'll intall XP
the process ask for the destination drive you say option 1 C:
the process will tell you there's an XP already installed and will give you the option to press *R to repair* the system
(Be carefull if you press enter instead of R the system will install a new OS scratching anything on the HDD)
when I did this before I have not been asked for any admin password.

  • Toshiba Satellite M45-Windows XP Home Edition SP2

Whenever I startup the laptop described above in the subject box, it trys to boot up but then I get the message:Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM then it says press r at the first screen to start repairs and when I do that nothing happens even when I push it repeatedly. So when I try to run recover I get the message: Media Test Failure, Check Cable. I have no idea what to do anymore. For one what cable do I check and how do I get to it?! And also, how do I get to the CD Drive on the thing?

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
The System hive supplies one of the most important branches of the registry. Without it, Windows will not run.
    Microsoft suggests this fix.
How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting
That takes a good deal of technical competence. It also requires either a Windows XP installation CD (any version) or a floppy drive. If you want to attempt it, I can help.
Just for the record, it's easy to prepare for those registry errors. When they occur here, it takes only a few minutes to repair them.
