Windows XP hooks up to internet but NOT local network

I have an Airport Base Extreme with a local network that includes my machine and an old B&W G3 and my son's iBook G4. My other son has an IBM Thinkpad running Windows XP SP2. We've looked through the discussions and he's been able to wirelessly hook up to the internet but he doesn't show up on my local network. He's used the info from http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1011.html to help him hook up but he still doesn't show up on my network and he is repeatedly disconnected from the internet. Any ideas?

I'm running the WEP, that's all. My husband just got a new Dell laptop (from work). He was able to hook up to the network without a problem but I can't see him on it either. I can see the Mac and iBook that are on the network but not the Windows machines. Also, when I click on the airport icon in the menu on my iMac, I only see my network. My husband's PC sees other networks that are in our neighborhood.

  • Connects to internet but not local network

My AX worked fine for the past year. While traveling I disconnected the AX and set the wireless mode in Airport Admin Utility to 'Wireless disabled' and then connected an iMac by ethernet wire for our housesitter. All worked well. On my return I plugged in the AX and reset the Wireless Mode to 'Create a Wireless Network (home router)'. All appeared to work well for the past week. Until today.... when I tried to print wirelessly to a printer connected to my server in the office outside our home. The MacBook Pro was unable to find the printer or the server. It was formerly able to this with no problem.
The MacBook Pro can connect to the internet by the AX but not to my local network.
When I choose 'connect to server' from the Go menu I'm unable to locate the server. I determined that if I enter the local address in the 'server address' window I am able to connect but remain unable to print. My former protocol was to choose the 'browse' button and choose from a list of possible computers (their are a number of Macs possibly on the network).
If I take the MacBook Pro across the driveway to the office and plug into my network the computer finds the server and the printer with no problem.
I've done a hard-reset twice - to no avail. And attempted a factory default re-set 3x but don't believe it worked since the green light didn't flash 4x as expected - it came on briefly and then turned amber while it re-started, but when I used Airport Set up Assistant all my former settings were there and the same password I had entered so I don't believe it reset to factory defaults.
    Yow!
    I'll really appreciate any assistance.

  • Machines avail on Bonjour but not Local Network - when on same subnet?

I have a simple system running ARD 3.2 on a machine running OS X 10.5.2, controlling a small number of machines running 10.5.2 or 10.4.11, all on the same sub-net.
Two of the computers - both 20" Intel iMacs (2.0GHz CoreDuo) with 10.5.2 installed have an odd problem - most (but not all) of the time they show up in the ARD computers list as being available for Screen Sharing Only - and so things like copying files to the machine fail. Their entries have the 'light blue' icon next to them which appears to indicate this state.
When in this mode they initially fail to show up when I do a scan of the local network. They should - as they are running off the same Airport hub as the ARD controller. However, if I change the scan to look for Bonjour connected computers they show up. If I then go back to scanning the local network they show up there too. But still nothing more than the light blue icon and screen sharing only as an option.
I've checked the settings of both machines - both have ARD enabled in sharing, both have the firewall set to allow all incoming connections. Other machines connected to the same sub-net show up and can be used without problem. All the machines are running ARD client 3.2.1
Anyone got any ideas what might be going on?
Grateful for any advice / suggestions.

Almost same setting here, same troubles.
If I restart them via Screen Sharing via the Restart Button on the Login Window, they sometimes show up correctly. But this is way too annoying.

  • Internet, but not local, service always drops at same time each day. HELP!

    Hi there,
At first this was laughable but now it's becoming a real pain.  For the past three weeks, sometime between 4 and 6 AM my router or modem drops the internet connection, but leaves the local only service in place.  After a simple reboot with the router everything is back to normal.  I am wondering what could be causing this?  It's always at the same time.  This doesn't happen at all during the day.  The router does not indicate a problem with anything, since it can still generate local service, just not internet.
We did recently upgrade to the high speed internet up to 7000 instead of 2000.  It's been happening since then.  We're using a Westell 2200 modem (have had for years, it seems) and an Apple Airport Extreme for a router.
Any ideas would be appreciated.  I am not sure how to get the numbers that were spoken of.  I do have a phone plugged into another jack, but that's it.  Have the inside wire maintenence plan if need be.
    Thank you!
    ---Sarita

I had the same arrangement and Verizon sent a new 6100 modem/router for the higher speed service.  The old modem did quite well but could not maintain the higher speed sync.  I was advised by Verizon, when I upgraded to the higher turbo speed, that a new modem would be needed.  I received one for no charge.  I was surprised that the old unit performed as well as it did considering it was not designed for the higher speed.  I suggest you call Verizon and request a new unit.  I am in MA also.

  • Is it possible to connect an iMac to the internet but not to the network?

    Hello,
I volunteered to purchase an iMac for our company. This huge company maintains a huge windows-only network environment and IT does not support any macs (nor do they want to have them on the network).
Hence, since we really need this machine to be a mac and not a PC I had to promise to set it up as a stand-alone machine and to get anti-virus protection (as users will be coming in with their jump drives etc). At least for the latter reason (regular updates of virus definitions must be possible) we'd like to have it connected to the internet.
How would I escape the dilemma that as soon as I'd hook it up via ethernet, it would of course get internet but at the same time would see all other machines on the network? (it will sure do so as I had tried it out with some other machine running on the same OS)
Is there a way to configure Snow Leopard to allow for internet but not network access?
Does it make sense at all (for security reasons that is)?
    thank you very much,
    HD

Is there a way to configure Snow Leopard to allow for internet but not network access?
Well, 'internet' is 'network access' so at one level your question makes no sense.
If, on the other hand, what you want to do is segregate your Mac from the other machines then that's a different issue. There are numerous ways of doing that, but most would involve some level of interaction with the network administrators. Given their ana^H^H^H attitude towards Macs that may be an issue.
The best way would be to setup a separate VLAN for the Mac. This will create a separate logical network within the company network with only this Mac and the network router in it. No PC would see the Mac, and the Mac wouldn't be scarred by seeing all those PCs. This cannot be done without buy-in from the network admins, though.
A step down from that would be to use one PC in the network as a gateway to the rest of the network. The Mac would talk to this PC, and the PC would pass the data out to the rest of the network. This would require admin rights on the PC, though, which you may or may not have (I've seen a lot of corporate networks… :: shudder ::)
The last option would be to setup an entirely separate internet connection for the Mac but there are logistical issues there, too.
My advice: Buy a dozen Krispy Kremes for the network guys and sweet talk them into building you a VLAN.

  • How can I force mount a dvd that isn't even seen by Disk Utility? I can see it on the Mac when using my Windows 7 partition via Boot Camp, but not in Lion, which is how I would rather be running.

Well if there is a EFI block, then running a program in OS X isn't going to do a lick of good.
After all EFI was designed for Trusted Computing and Digital Rights Management, to act between the OS and hardware, can read drives, contact the Internet and everything.
Windows doesn't use EFI, will have UEFI in Windows 8 though.

  • HT4628 Why does internet connection on my Time Capsule cut out (on main but not guest network)?

Hi - I just got a time capsule 802.11n to use with my Macbook (OSX 10.6.8).
My wireless connectivity on my main (but not guest) network cuts out EVERY FRICKEN DAY multiple times.  The internet phone connection + guest network still work, so the internet connection is there -- something with the main network is going wrong.
When I reset the time capsule (remove plug and plug back in), it works fine again.
Can anyone recommend a solution so this connectivity problem stops?  Never had any issues with my Netgear wireless router, so at the moment, I'm really disappointed in this Apple product.  Hopefully there is a setting I can switch to fix this (or something else simple one of you smart people out there can recommend)
    Thanks,
    JLG

In any event, if your OS X version is 10.7.x, download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Lion:
    Lion: AirPort Utility 5.6.
If your OS X version is 10.5.x or 10.6.x, download and install AirPort Utility 5.5.3:
Leopard, Snow Leopard: AirPort Utility 5.5.3.
After you install the appropriate version of AirPort Utility, open it. The program will be located in your Utilities folder, which in turn is found in your Applications folder.
To open the Utilities folder, go to the Finder and select "Utilities" from the Go menu:
AirPort Utility 5.6 looks like this:
... but make sure you use the version of AirPort Utility you just downloaded.
Launch AirPort Utility and select your Time Capsule. Click Manual Setup, then the Guest Menu tab, then you can elect to disable the guest network, or to establish whatever security settings you want.
The window looks somewhat like this:
If your version of AirPort Utility does not look anything like that, you are probably not using the one you just downloaded. Find it and start over.
When you are finished configuring your Time Capsule, click Update and allow the Time Capsule to restart.

There is no need for anyone to use 32-bit version anymore.
Retail comes with both. Or you can save on just buying 64-bit System Builder disc.
Better support for today's hardware with larger video graphic memory and systems.
    Better memory management.

When I click on a file, the downloads box opens and depending on the setting, it auto saves the file or asks me where to save the file. What if I don't want to save it anywhere, I just want to view it and close it?

  • Bad video quality on Atom over Internet, but not o...

I have an Asus netbook with a 1.66GHz Atom, 1GB DDR3, and XP.  The video quality when in a call over the Internet is almost always bad, and Skype complains the computer is "slow".  There is no virus scanner or any other garbage running that sucks up resources.  I keep it lean.
So I tried using a different computer to make the call; an 8 year old Sempron laptop, also with XP and 2.2GHz or close to that.  Video quality is great.  So it's obviously a computer performance issue, right?
It gets stranger.  I set up a video call between these two computers over my LAN (i.e. within the same house).  Video quality is great on both.
The results have been similar over a span of a year or more, calling people in different parts of the country, and even dropping Wifi and using a cable.
So what causes Skype to think the computer is slow when video calling over the Internet, but not when calling another computer on the same LAN?  I have a theory, but I'll hold that thought for right now.

I have been using iChat exclusively over WiFi (Airport Extreme) from my iMac, and via Ethernet and WiFi from my Powerbook. I have not had any quality issues when connecting in this manner. Connections within my local network from WiFi to WiFi, as well as to outside connections over Broadband have all been of very good quality. Now if I can just get it all working again following the upgrade to Leopard 10.5.1.
FYI: I have even used iChat AV on Tiger using DUN on my Treo650 (Sprint), which worked fine as well.

  • Airport express connects to internet, but not print server

hello all. i hope someone can help me with this. 2 days ago, my wife was able to print using her ibook/airport expess setup. today, the network diagnostics has this message: "network diagnostics was able to connect to the internet but not to the server EPSON Stylus CX3800.pdldatastream.tcp.local. this could be caused by problems with the server, or an internet problem between this computer and the server." she says this happened when she turned it on. what could be causing this? any and all help welcome. mcrat

You can reset the AirPort Express (AX) following the directions in Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ.
Then you can use AirPort Utility on your computer to configure the AX.

  • Hi i use the hp lap in connecting for internet but not open the bro

    hi
i have some problam in my laptop in connecting for internet but not open for broswer and not update for software  tell the solution

    Hi @jerry3 ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP Notebook and not getting to the Internet. First try just to reset the router. Unplug from the power wait a few moments and plug back in.
Can get to safe mode with command prompt? F11 upon startup choose safe mode with Networking.
Can you get to the Internet in safe mode?
Please note remove any and all USB devices, and remove memory cards from the card reader slot. Disconnect all non-essential devices.
You can do a system restore. System restore will help if something automatically updated and did not go well on the Notebook.
I would be happy to assist if needed. How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
    Please let me know.
    Thanks.

  • TS1492 I can connect to the internet but not to itunes

itunes error 11333, I can connect to the internet but not to itunes Store. Apple Support, mention update to itunes 7.5 will solve the problem, but if check for itunes updates in my system, it says that the system is pu to date

I won't give you a lecture about how poor WEP encryption is, but are you sure that is the problem? Is it possible that your new modem (or the carrier behind it) is not providing DHCP service?

  • Allow Internet but block other network connections ?

I am using my Airport Extreme (b/g) only for connecting my Wii/Internet radio devices to the internet. I also have a NAS and my computers attached to the network but because the AE is set to WEP and I am worried it is too easy for someone to break in to it and get access to my shared data in the network.
    My network is:
Netgear WNR3500L wireless router connected to:
    DSL Modem
    Netgear ReadyNAS
    Netgear Powerline Adapter
    Airport Extreme
So can I allow internet but no other network connections through the AE ?

    My advise is..
If you do not have at least two game consoles behind this router, turn off UPnP in the router.
This is done in the router at Advanced -> UPnP.
    By game consoles, any two..
    #1 For example: X-box, PlayStation.
#2 A special type of computer with no keyboard or mouse. And it is usually connected to a TV.

    A few times a week

Firefox is shutting down windows I want to remain open. Example: I am done viewing one window. I click the X to shut the window and it shuts two windows. Every single time, attempt to close one windows, two windows close. Lately, I have been opening several windows with nothing but google search, just so it will shut that window and not something else I want to remain open. I could understand this if I was using tabs, but I am not. This has been going on for over two weeks. I don't like going back to history to open a window, I did not want closed in the first place. Isn't that what 'Windows' is all about? Any ideas?
