Windows XP keeps starting installation over

Hello. I am trying to install Windows XP (service pack 2) on my new MacBook Pro (10.6.4). I go through the procedure fine, but when the computer restarts, instead of continuing the setup and asking for a serial number, setup starts at the very beginning again, which takes me up to creating another partitition -- which I had already created. Not sure what to do about this, and I really need windows on the mac. Any help is greatly appreciated. I have searched the forums already... but maybe I missed it.

Sounds like you might not be formatting the new partition +with Windows+ during the XP install.
That would account for it not being able to boot into Windows XP when the install is complete.
This image is from the 10.5.x Boot Camp manual (sorry for the size, it's the one I had handy)...

  • MIAW issue in windows not starting movies over

I have created a simple application that has a play and stop button in one window that activate another MIAW that plays a quicktime movie file. On a MAC when I click play it starts the video from the beginning and when I click the stop button its stops the video. If I click my play button again it opens the video in a separate window again and starts from the beginning. On windows when I click play and stop it functions the same however, if I click play again the video does not start over. The video keeps playing invisibly in the background or something and clicking the play button just resumes the video visibly from where it was currently still playing. Does anyone know how I can get the video to start over on a windows platform?

I figured out that if I use a "forget" command it will accomplish the task but it would be more beneficial to keep the videos in memory. Please note that I am fairly new to Director.
This is a script that starts on the main movie to launch a looping video commercial on the larger tv
    on startmovie
      window().new("looping commercial").open()
      window("looping commercial").rect = rect(0, 0, 800, 600)
      window("looping commercial").resizable=FALSE
    end
This is the scripting behavior attached to the "play" button that you would press. This stops the looping commercial and then plays a 3 minute informercial.
    on mouseUp
--opens the spectracide move for play in larger monitor
      window().new("Spectracide").open()
      window("Spectracide").rect = rect(0, 0, 800, 600)
      window("Spectracide").resizable=FALSE
--closes the looping commercial that was loaded at the start of the application
      window("looping commercial").close()
      -- plays a sound in channel 1
      sound(1).play(member("play1"))
    end
This is the script behavior attached to the "stop" button that turns off the infomercial and goes back to the looping commercial on the large tv.
    on mousedown
--closes the spectracide video that was executed when the play button was pressed
      window("Spectracide").close()
      --opens the looping commercial
      window().new("looping commercial").open()
      window("looping commercial").rect = rect(0, 0, 800, 600)
      window("looping commercial").resizable=FALSE
    end

  • When I only want to close the current window to return to the previous window, the whole firefox site closes down, I end up back at my desktop & have to start all over again. How can this be fixed?

If I close a window I should be back at the previous window that I was at when I followed a link to this window. At least that's the way Internet Explorer works, which I have used for years. The only thing that prevents me from using Firefox exclusively is that it is very time consuming to have to start all over again from scratch every time I close a window. For instance, say I type "cats" into the search box. It gives me links to a list of "cats" sites. I go to a "cats" website, decide I don't like it so close the window to return to my list of sites, but instead of returning me to the list, I end up at my desktop. Then I have to start all over, just like I had not even been online. Very aggravating. I don't know how else to describe the problem, I can't believe that other people haven't had a similar complaint, unless I just have some settings wrong?

Now up to Firefox 8 and the problem persists. Cannot go to the www.turnitin.com page and login as I used to do -- Firefox does not remember my username or password.
Still works on Windows, and with other browsers... It would be great if a fix is available.

It sounds like you destroyed your boot partition and the recovery partition.  Depending on it's age, your MacBook Air might be able to do a net boot.  Plug and ethernet connection into it and attempt to boot.  If it has the right firmware, it will find a net boot configuration on the net and boot that.  Then it will give you a Recovery Partition like display and allow you to reinstall the OS X version that came with it.... assuming that it was Lion or ML.  If your computer came with Snow Leopard, then even the net boot won't work.
At that point you need a bootable USB Key, or an external DVD drive AND a Snow Leopard installation DVD.
An Apple Store, if there is one nearby, MAY be able to get you going again.  However, whatever is on the SSD now will be toast too.

  • Hello there,  there is a rare window that keeps popping up every time i start Logic.  I'd like to send a screenshot... anyway, it's a "tempo" window with strange layout about midi effects and so,.... is it normal?  How can i improve this?  Thanks.

hello there,  there is a rare window that keeps popping up every time i start Logic.  It's a "tempo" window with strange layout about midi effects and so,.... is it normal?  How can i improve this?  Thanks.

Hmm, that's some sort of MIDI Arpeggiator setup in your environment. Strange that you don't know it, this has to be custom-installed, it is not part of the standard setup.
You can do two things about it:
1.unlock your current screenset (shift-L), then close the (Bass Driver) window, then relock the screenset (shift-L). Next time you open up this project you won't see the Bass Driver, but it is still in the project.
    2. You can remove the whole page: open the Environment (cmd-8), then go to the dropdown menu arrow top left of the Environment window and select the Bass Driver layer. If it is selected, dropdown again and choose Delete. Now Save your project under a different name (Save As...), so that you still keep the Bass Driver setup in the original project. If you don't need to keep it, you can simply Save.

  • Firefox won't start. Everytime I end the process/close the last window, it keeps getting stuck at about 2500k memory in the task manager. (continued)

Firefox won't start. Everytime I end the process/close the last window, it keeps getting stuck at about 2500k memory in the task manager. The only way I have to fix it is to change some kind of compability settings or try and access it in a new way, and every time it crashes/closed/computer blue screens that setting will no longer work.
That is a short term solution, but eventually I'll run out of ways to access firefox successfully. I've tried many solutions, and some worked, but only once. I have yet to find a permanent solution for this problem.

First please update your plugins to make sure you are up to date. Shockwave Flash player has a newer version 16. In order to better manage the memory that Firefox uses please see these troubleshooting steps: [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-uses-too-much-memory-ram Firefox Uses too much RAM]

  • Install 4.6 w/ Roxio Media Manager - Failed - Installer keeps starting

Oh what a fun weekend, NOT.
I installed the desktop 4.6 w/ roxio.  during install, the roxio portion failed unable to find the msi file.
    tried again, failed again.
Now, when windows starts, 2 Windows Installer windows popup up and say "preparing to install".  after a period of time, they disappear, however, at some point, an ISUSPM.exe process starts up and repeatedly flashes this window, pretty much taking control of the desktop.
The Roxio software is installed, yet not visible in add/remove programs, or icons in start menus.
Okay, how does one fix this?
    thanks
    Don

I had the same issue To solve this you first need a tool that can edit your starup script. I used CCleaner, startup menu nder the tools tab. (It is a free software download).
Anyway, when the installation starts I started WIndows Task Manager. Under Applications I found the installation, then right clicked on it and selected Go To Process Write down the exact name of the process, then close theTask Manager WIndow. Now, start your startup script editor and find that process in the sartup menu and disable it, which prevents the process from loading.
Reboot the PC and move on.

  • (Mountain Lion) suddenly the screen turns black, and I have to use the switch to turn it on. And, the screen turns to zoom, and the only way to turn to normal is to close the window and start all over again?

(Mountain Lion) suddenly the screen turns black, and I have to use the on/off switch to turn it on. And, the screen turns to zoom, and the only way to return to normal is to close the window and start all over again?

Does the screen go black while you are using the machine? ...or after it has sat idle for a bit?
If it happens while you're using the machine, check to see if a hot corner has been set for sleep. You can do that here: System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver > Screen Saver and click the button labelled "Hot Corners..." in the lower right.
If it happens after a bit of idle time, that's normal sleep behavior. The delay can be adjusyed here: System Preferences > Energy Saver.
In either case, pressing any key on the keyboard should bring it out of sleep.
    Re zooming -
If this happens while in Safari, and you are using an Apple Magic Mouse, a default setting applicable to it is that a soft double-tap on the mouse will zoom the Safari window. A second double-tap will bring it back.
If it is the entire screen that is zooming, Control plus scroll gesture on the mouse will zoom the whole screen. Repeat with the opposite scroll gesture to bring it back.

If the message that comes up is in several languages, you're getting kernal panics. See Dr. Smoke's FAQ at http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html . Many times, kernal panics are caused by bad or failing memory. When you click on the blue apple and about this mac, does it show the memory size you think you have installed? There are other reasons for kernal panics, and the FAQ will walk you through them.

  • Windows Installler keeps repeating

Hello guys, I really hope you can save me now. Well the thing is that I ran Boot Camp to install Windows XP and partitioned my hard drive and clicked in 'Start Installation', then the Windows boot assitant showed up and I followed the instructions (the setup with the blue background), formatted the partition and the setup copyed the files but when it tells that the system will restart, it restart but in the same blue screen with the same setup all over again. And I can't access Mac OS, even with holding the option key there's no option for starting with the Mac OS.
    Please help me guys.
    Thanks, John.

the windows installer keeps repeating cause when, after formating partitation, copying files... , windows installation asks before rebooting to remove the any floppy disk or something like that... when it reboots you have to remove the windows cd. To do so press and hold trackpad button until it removes the cd from the drive. then windows will configure and i thing it will ask for the cd again.. its easy from here...
to the second post i didnt understand:
did you accidentally format the hard drive or wrong partitation and you want to install os x again but the cd doesnt recognize the hard drive?
if so you have use disk utility on the os x cd and format hard drive to mac os x "registo cronologico expandido"( in portuguese)

  • I erased my HD. Now I can't instal mountain lion from my bootable flash drive, and keep getting "installation error. Try again."

I bought  mountain lion, made a bootable flash drive.
I booted from it and it went to upgrading right away!
So I stopped it and went to my former recovery partition I erased my HD because I wanted a clean start.
Now I can't instal mountain lion from the bootable flash drive, and keep getting "installation error. Try again."
and there is no 4 choices window.
I don't know what to do.

How did you create the USB install thumb drive? If it was with Disk Utility I have run into this problem and have since used THIS program to make the USB install drive.
As to your problem you only have one option and that is to Reinstall the Original OS X version that came on your computer or if you still have the Lion Recovery Partition use that to reinstall Lion. Or if you system came with Lion and you have No Lion Recovery HD Partition you can boot the system from over the internet and Reinstall Lion.
At startup hold down the Command+Option+r keys until you saa a spinning Globe in the center of the screen. Once that loads Repartition the drive as One partition and then reinstall Lion.

  • I cannot open project; do I start all over, or is there hope?

So I have started doing video podcasts and am using iMovie '11 for editing the footage.
I exported my first episode which turned out to be around 18 min total. When I watched it to verify, the audio started becoming out of sync with the video. It got progressively worse. Searching these forums and the Internet, I found other users were noticing the same problem. One workaround was to extract the audio from each and every clip. I tried this and it worked. The exported movie had no video/audio sync problems. So I thought that would be my workflow.
Then I started working on my second episode. It turned out to be a long one clocking in at an hour and 45 min. It consisted of some complicated edits and a very large number of separate clips. I started my tedious workflow and workaround of extracting the audio from each and every clip so the exported movie would have video/audio in sync. The process got progressively slower and slower. At some point about halfway through, when I right clicked on an clip to extract the audio, the spinning beach ball came up and iMovie hung. I restarted and tried again, but the same result. When I restarted again, iMovie would not start. I can double click my first episode project and open it, but the second episode will not load; well, it will load sometimes, but if I do anything with it, including just moving the mouse, spinning beach ball and hung. Searching the Internet, I found recommendations to clear the cache and plist. This didn't help any for me. Sometimes, iMovie will hang when I simply select the project in my project library; sometimes, I can select the project and quickly get to the menus. I tried doing this and duplicating the project, but the duplicated project showed the same symptoms.
Unfortunately, I did not keep backups and I don't know why I didn't with such a large project. I've learned my lesson.
Question: Is there any hope of getting the project to a state where I can salvage it? Anyway to reattach the audio outside of iMovie or something?
I also realize now that iMovie is probably not meant for such large, complex projects. But, the video/audio sync issue doesn't seem to be that hard to reproduce. I have submitted feedback for that.
If I decide to continue using iMovie, I am going to add to my workflow that a project cannot be over x minutes long, export the parts, and combine them with Quicktime.
Question: Are there recommended guidelines for a single project's complexity or length?
I am hoping for some answers here; otherwise, I guess I'll have to start all over and spend the next two days re-editing.

I have the exact same problem here Jason, only in my case the project is merely 15 mins long...
I noticed the audio sync issues on exported files (needed it as a QT HD to play in front of a whole school assembly) about half way through the audio would go miles out - well over a minute adrift.
Having read some posts I decided to detach the audio as you did, it let me do this for a while then about half way through I got the beach ball and likewise I'm now stuck with an urgent essential project that I can't do anything with. This is on a brand new 27" i7 iMac with all the updates, and no other projects. It's like the dark days of Pinnacle on windows, I thought this stuff was supposed to just work!
Does anyone have any suggestions on a fix - I've repaired permissions, tried trashing the iMovie prefs etc but it still hangs every time.
