Windows XP no longer boots
Sorry I have very little info on the offending PC. Please ignore my sig - that's my own PC, the problem is on a friend's:
Have just replaced a faulty Gigabyte GA-8STXC MB with an MSI 845PE. Installation no problem, BIOS no problem, MEMTEST-86 passes no problem.
Memory is unknown at 768MB and the processor is a 2.4GHz P4 - memtest-86 reports this correctly.
The O/S on the hard disk is Windows XP Home and after the initial startup menu simply reboots every time. A message after reboot claims that it may have been due to hardware changes and that the reboot was 'to protect your folders and files'.
Please help! What's the solution? This must have happened before, so there must be a workaround for it. Could it be a BIOS setting? I left nearly all as default.
Thanks,
Bob.
Unfortunately neither of us has an XP disk. The original PC was one of those with an OEM Windows installation and the manufacturers didn't supply a disk.
Does that mean we're stuffed until I can borrow an XP disk from somewhere?
Thanks,
Bob.

Windows 7 no longer boots after upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion
I got a late 2011 MacBook Pro, on which I installed Windows 7 with Boot Camp. After I upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion, I can no longer boot Windows. If I keep the option button pressed during boot I only get the OS X and recovery options, and if I choose to boot Windows from the system preferences pane, I get a message that says that no bootable device was found. However, I'm sure that the partition is still there, because I can see it in finder and browse the files normally. How can I boot Windows again?
"Easier" in this case as an alternative is defined as repartitioning/reformatting your disk, and restoring from backups (which for most people also means starting from scratch with Boot Camp Assistant and Windows since most users aren't backing that environment up).
What you did is, in my opinion, easier and faster. But if you don't know what you're doing can lead to data loss. But then, by definition, blowing away your disk and starting over with a restored backup begins with data loss! -
Resizing Windows Partition - No Longer Booting
Whenever I attempt to setup a Windows/Linux Dual boot I get hit with this same dilemma. I start off with a NTFS format partition with Windows XP on it. As soon as I resize the partition, it no longer boots. Even before installing linux/grub. I defragmented before attempting this, and I took every precaution. In the end, I'm never able to boot my Windows OS. I can boot Linux from the Grub menu, and I can still access my Windows files.
As of now I've reformatted back to Windows. I would just like to know what went wrong because I want to attempt another install later on.Ward,
windows is weird in that it notes somewhere the block numbers where the system is installed, and when that moves
it does not boot anymore.
Now you are making life more complicated then necessary: if you still have windows resized and installed (and not booting),
you can use the windows install cd and go into repair mode. It will fix the resized windows.
If you are starting from scratch, before installing windows, start a Linux live CD, do not install it, start the program
"gparted" and partition your disk as you want it. Then install windows in one of the partitions.
Instead of the Linux live CD you can also use a Gparted stand alone CD:
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php
Hope it helps.

Moved my mac over to a new HD and my Windows Partition no longer boots.
Hello people smarter than me. I seek knowledge and skills I do not posses. I replaced my SSD with a bigger one going from 240gb to 960gb. The old one had two bootcamp OS partitions (Mac, Windows) and four partitions (EFI System Partition, Recovery HD make up the remaining two) I added a third (5th) partition that I labeled scratch (ExFat) that I intend to be a bulk storage for assets. Currently it will boot MacOS but not Windows 7.
My end goal is:

For those that might be able to help, here is my dilemma...
I have a late 2006 Mac Pro 2,1 8-core 3.0ghz with 7gb ram, ATI Radeon HD 5870 1gb vram running 10.6.8.
The problem I am having is this. I originally had a 250gb hd that came with my Mac Pro. I installed a second 1tb hd in the second slot for more storage. Then I added a second 1tb hd for a dedicated WinXP installation. Then I added a third 1tb hd for a dedicated Win7 64bit installation. At this point, everything was working just fine and I could boot between OS X and WinXP/7. When I booted into Windows, a screen came up and let me select which Win OS I wanted to boot into, again, all working perfectly.
So after about 6 months I start running out of room on my original 250gb hd with Mac OS X and decide that Win7 64bit has been running so well that I should get rid of WinXP and swap out the 250gb hd for the 1tb hd for my main OS X hd. I erase WinXP, reformat the 1tb hd for Mac OS X and copy the 250gb hd to the 1tb hd. Then I switch the hd's out and put the 1tb in the #1 slot that originally had the 250gb hd in and put the 250gb hd in the #3 slot. Then I erased the 250gb hd.
After cleaning out a bunch of font duplications in Fontbook and getting rid of some unwanted startup items, my Mac Pro was running as wonderfully as ever. A few days after the changes, I decided to boot back into Win7 64bit. I held down the option key at startup as usual and selected windows. A few seconds later I get a black screen with an error message saying disk is not bootable.
I began to wonder since Bootcamp installation of Windows 7 is not officially supported on this early Mac Pro model that by deleting the WinXP installation, that I somehow disabled the Win7 64bit system. So I reinstalled WinXP on the 250gb hd in the #3 slot but now I can only boot into WinXP, still no Win7 64bit.
If I go to System Preferences>Startup Disk, I can see and select Windows 7 as a startup disk, but it still reverts to WinXP during boot up.
I am hoping to find out some simple but overlooked solution to this issue without having to reinstall Win7 64bit, since this machine isnt supported, it was a major pain to use the ATI 5870 and get Win7 64bit installed.
I have documented everything that I have done to the computer between last known working system and the current issues.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
MarkI could not even get to that window, I was able to select repair or complete install but when I chose repair, a message came up saying I couldnt repair that version of windows. It is the same disk I used for installation and it is in perfect condition.
Original HD configuration that was working was:
Slot 1 - original apple 250gb hd with System OS X 10.6.8
Slot 2 - 1tb hd formatted for OSX for storage
Slot 3 - 1tb hd with System Windows XP SP3
Slot 4 - 1tb hd with System Windows 7 64bit
HD configuration when that I changed:
Slot 1 - original apple 250gb disk was copied over to Slot 3
Slot 2 - unchanged 1tb hd formatted for OS X storage
Slot 3 - erased hd, reformatted and copied files over from hd in slot 1 using Disk Utility
Slot 4 - unchanged, Windows 7 64bit Ultimate installed now not booting
I have tried swapping the Windows 7 hd to each hd slot and rebooting (a Mac Pro gets really heavy after doing that 3 times!). Using startup manager, the windows boot option is unavailable. I can still boot into OS X in each placement without issues. I can go to System Preferences>Startup Disk and can see the Windows 7 option and select it. However even if I restart the computer from Startup Disk with Windows 7 selected, it will go to a black screen and say enter CD.
In case this helps, I had to purchase an original Windows 7 64bit ultimate and then create a new bootable system disk to install on this computer. I tried system repair from both disks and it did not work.
Im beginning to think that reinstallation is unavoidable, but still hoping that I can find a solution first. The actual installation isnt the major issue, it shouldnt take more than an hour to reinstall and update the video drivers. Its the installation of the programs and having to redo all of the settings on the 4 major programs that I am using that will literally take days. Oh man, somebody must know the answer!!
Thanks again for the response, I truly appreciate the help -
After HD change, Windows partition no longer boots up
Recently, I replaced my internal Hard drive on an early 2008 Macbook with a Solid State Drive. The original Hard drive had both an OS X partition and boot camp partition. I am currently using this drive as a external storage device (I did not delete anything, both partitions are still there with their respective operating systems) via a USB hard drive enclosure. Occasionally, I need to boot into Windows, but when I try to boot off the external drive, I get a black screen with a small blinking white line, and eventually, the error message that there is no bootable media. Please help!
Windows does not work from an external USB drive. It never has.

New partition & windows no longer boots
Hey all, up until now i have had 3 partitions on my drive - Snow leopard, General media and Windows 7. I decided to add a linux partition and made a new partition using disk utility. I boot up to the choose disk screen to install ubuntu to find that windows is no longer an option for boot up, so i deleted the new partition and it still won't boot into windows anymore.
How can i restore the booting function? Doing it with a linux partition too would be preferable but it isn't necessary.
Thanks,
BradHi Brad and welcome to Discussions,
Hi John,
A later done partitioning to add additional partitions to a harddisk alters the position of the BootCamp partition in the partition table so that the Windows Bootloader can not 'find' the Windows partition.
With Windows XP it helped to simply edit the Boot.Ini file and point it to the WIndows partition.
With Vista and Windows 7 there no longer is a boot.ini but EasyBCD http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1 can do the same.
One thing to remember though is, that even Vista and Windows 7 'suffer' from the limitation of four partitions on one harddisk immenent to the Master Boot Record (MBR) since Apples EFI/GPT/MBR emulation can not handle Extended Partitions and Logical Partitions inside an Extended Partition.

Bare with me as Im no computer genius but ... This afternoon I wanted to create more disc space on my Windows partition as I am using CAD software and wanted to free up as much space as possible. So, I went into disk utility and reduced the size of the Mac partition, then clicked apply.
When I came to reboot the computer to use windows the windows OS, the option to use windows was no longer there.
After looking at some online forums, I've found that most people suggest reformatting the hard drive and re-installing mac OS and also windows from back up data.
Is there no easier way for which I will not lose any data? Please help! I really need to use Windows ASAP!The only apps I know of that can backup a Windows partition and or resize a windows parttition on a Mac so you don't have to go through the wipeing out, resizing and reinstall is WinClone for backing it up and WinTune (I think that is the name) for resizing a Windows partition on a Mac.
Once you create a Windows partition, install Windows in that partition, you can't fool around with any partition on your drive with either Windows Disk Management or OS X Disk Utility and expect Windows to boot.
The only thing you can try is to run Boot Camp Assistant.app again and remove the Windows partition and then run it again to create a larger partition and then reinstall Windows. Once you remove the windows partition put all the space back into the OS X partition and start fresh. -
FreeBSD didn't install, i can no longer boot into Windows
I unsuccessfully installed FreeBSD and I can no longer boot into an OS from the HD. I attempted to install BSD onto the "G" drive below however the the install gave me some kind of storage error and I can no longer boot into Windows. While going through the BSD installation process I opted to NOT install a boot manager (I incorrectly assumed that this would leave my existing boot manager intact).
Here's how I was partitioned pre-FreeBSD (these are all partitions on the same SATA 80GB drive):
C:\ Windows ME
D:\ Windows XP sp1a
E:\ Windows XP-64 beta
F:\ Longhorn 64 preview
[G]:\ unpartitioned 4GB
[F]:\ uformatted 4GB
H:\ NTFS Storage
I:\ FAT32 Storage
Before I attempted to install BSD, I used c:\boot.ini as my boot manager.
Now when I try to boot it says:
Code: [Select]
Invalid Partition
Invalid Partition
No /boot/loader
FreeBSD/i386 boot
Default: 0:ad(0,a)/kernel
boot:
Invalid Partition
No /kernel
FreeBSD/i386 boot
Default: 0:ad(0,a)/kernel
boot: _
Has anyone else ever had this happen to them? If so how can I reenable booting into Windows?Hi
You got a prob I think, if you can boot a windows, MSconfig, startup options might restore the boot files.Only other thing is to try and either load a new windows and let it setup a boot file, or perhaps a win98 startup disk, and fdisk, then set active partiton, which will set an MBR. But that would leave a load of work to do, I think I'd opt for an install of XP, and let it repair existing installation, and make a new boot file.
Hope you don't need the info on disks. If you do, I would install another HDD, load XP, then copy original Disk to save place.
Good luck

Z77A-GD65 no longer boots with 4 RAM modules
I had 4 x 8GB Cosair Vengeance LP that used to work fine, but no longer boots into Windows with 4 but only with 2 RAM modules. Any help in solving the issue would be appreciated. ( I need 32 GB as I run many virtual machines )
The 4 modules worked fine for few months until couple weeks ago, when I saw issues with booting into Windows 7. The workaround was to "warm up" by leaving the PC in BIOS for about 5 minutes and it would boot fine. Since couple days ago, it would POST but not boot into Windows or into live Linux on USB, so I started troubleshooting with bare bones first ( MB, CPU, 1 RAM, PS ) and then starting adding more and more components until I found that 1 and 2 RAM modules worked in either black or blue rail but with 4 RAM modules, it will POST, but not boot at all into either USB based live system or into Windows 7.
Memtest with 2 separate sets of modules pass with flying colors. Mixing the sets work fine too, but add 2nd set (i.e. 4 modules) and it fails to boot. I am leaning more toward believing the issue is with the MB than with the RAM since mixing them doesn't throw any memory error.
Any suggestion on how to check if it's the RAM or MB ?Quote from: PirateDog on 25-November-13, 00:23:30
If these were 2 kits mixed, ...
These were 2 mixed kits.

What voltage is the RAM running? A slight bump up in voltage might help.
As to voltage, I started with standard 1.5 and then incrementally upped it to 1.65v. At 1.6v and above, it does boot into Windows, but intermittently goes into BSOD... Works perfect with 1.5v with 2 RAM modules.
I'll save the money for next build instead of going for 32GB kit. ... guess I'll live with 16GB for now.
Thank you all for the advice. -
Windows Partition No Longer Shows Up After Accidental Premature Closing of Camptune
Mac OS X 10.7.5
I was running Paragon Camptune to expand my Windows 7 partition. The progress bar reached the end and stayed there for about 30 minutes. The Camptune window was then accidentally closed and Camptune quit itself. I restarted the computer but the Windows partition no longer shows up when I try to boot it, only Mac OSX and Recovery Disk. The Bootcamp drive is no longer accessable from System Preferences, and the Bootcamp partition folder is no longer accessable in the Devices area of Finder. Camptune no loner recognizes that there was a partition. Thus, I am no longer able to access the partition's contents or delete it and make a new one.
It would be preferable if I could fix the partition and have it accessable again, however I have no problem with deleting it and making a new partition. Any advice? Thanks for your time.

What might be the best way to continue to repair it. I do not have the option to click on "verify disk permissions" or "Repair Disk Permissions".
Should I clone the hard drive in the target disk mode??
I'm not the best at this stuff so any more advice would be greatly appreciated!

I built an Itunes library for my Shuffle on an old laptop which no longer boots. I have since built a new library on my main computer and want to transfer the library that is still on the Ipod to the new library so I can add some new tunes. How do I do that? Thanks!
You can't transfer song files from iPod to computer using iTunes, except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store (and you can also re-download purchases on the iTunes Store Purchased page). However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer. If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.
Once the song files are on your new computer, drag the files (or the folder containing the files) to the iTunes window to add them to the iTunes library. -
Can no longer boot into Mavericks 10.9.5
My problem is that I can no longer boot into Mavericks 10.9.5 on my mid-2012 Macbook Pro. The problem arose suddenly without any known major changes to my software or hardware. The booting process freezes with the apple visible and the circle below it spinning endlessly. Every several seconds, the display very briefly gets brighter, then the circle starts spinning again and the process repeats itself. It never gets to the user login screen.
Other than keeping various apps up to date, I don't recall any recent major operating system or other major software updates, nor have I made any recent hardware changes. I've searched a multitude of threads and and tried any number of fixes without success. Here's what I've tried so far (and probably a few more that I can't remember): (1) Repaired the startup disk with both Recovery HD -> Disk Utility and single-user mode -> /sbin/fsck -fy; (2) Repaired the startup disk permissions with Recovery HD -> Disk Utility; (3) Reloaded the Mavericks 10.9.5 operating system twice; (4) deleted /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist; (5) reset PRAM and NVRAM; (6) booted with "D" pressed and ran the Apple hardware test, which ran for about 40 minutes and reported no problems; (7) tried booting from a bootable clone of Mavericks 10.9.5 on an external hard drive, which also failed at the same place with the apple showing and the circle below it spinning endlessly. ***Oddly, I am able to boot from a bootable clone of Mountain Lion on an external hard drive. It's Mavericks that won't boot.***
Here is the part of the system log the repeats itself over and over and seems to correlate with the repeated failed attempts to complete the booting process. Any help would be appreciated beyond words:

You got a prob I think, if you can boot a windows, MSconfig, startup options might restore the boot files.Only other thing is to try and either load a new windows and let it setup a boot file, or perhaps a win98 startup disk, and fdisk, then set active partiton, which will set an MBR. But that would leave a load of work to do, I think I'd opt for an install of XP, and let it repair existing installation, and make a new boot file.
Hope you don't need the info on disks. If you do, I would install another HDD, load XP, then copy original Disk to save place.
Good luck

Can no longer boot to MacOSX after bootcamp install
Hello all, I have an issue to where I can no longer boot into the Mac OSX partition after what appears to be a failed Windows bootcamp install. As I was running the bootcamp assistant process, a reboot occurred and I was greeted with the "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key". I have no idea how to get past this and boot back to OSX.
Things I have tried:
Holding down the "option" key does nothing, even using a USB keyboard
Resetting PRAM (CMD + OPT + P + R) does nothing, even with USB keyboard
I have put in a MAC OSX 10.7 Disk and cannot boot to disk using CMD + C on startup
I also pulled the hard drive out and connected it to another PC and wiped the drive completely. I put it back in the macbook and I am still presented with this error. It seems, even though I get the Mac startup tone, that it is stuck in which ever OS it tried to run previously, that being Windows. Not sure why I am still receiving this error even after wiping the drive completely clean.
As far as hardware goes, I am pretty sure its a late 2010 Alumn. Macbook Pro. I cant get the current model number since I cant boot the OS. Any help is appreciated. Please reset SMC as well.
You can get the serial number from the back cover and use https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do to find the model. -
Greetings,
Well, now that I have repaired the fan problem, I am afraid I have created one.
My T60p originally had a drive with two partitions on it. A 90GB primary partition, and a 5GB secondary partition. Since I had to re-install the OS, the 5GB partition is no longer in use.
I tried to user Hirens utilities like Fdisk to see if I could use the space. I tried formating the space with an NTFS file system. That is all I did. Since then, the machine no longer boots.
However, using Hirens utilities, and instead of booting with the Hirens disk, I choose to boot from the hard drive, using NTFS. The machine booted fine so all my information is there.
How do I get it to boot without the Hirens disk now? It no longer gives me access to the programs that were on the disk....
Regards,
Jean-Pierre
P.S. I am trying to fix this myself, as with all issues on my laptop, before I take it to the Geek Squad. Thank you
for your input.
Here are the specs of the machine.

Solved!
Go to Solution.Hello,
It sounds like the primary partition may no longer be marked as "startable" or "active" in the partition table of data located at the end of the master boot record, which is what the MBR code uses to determine which partition's boot sector to load.
If you have a Windows XP installation disc, you can try booting from that, starting the Recovery Console (instead of an operating system installation) and using the FixMBR and FixBoot commands to repair the MBR and boot sector (for good measure), respectively.
