Windows XP on Macbook Pro - Control Panel settings

I've been a Windows user for years, and now find that I still require my Toshiba laptop on my desk beside my Macbook Pro.
My problem today wih the MBP is problems while in Windows XP with the Control Panel. I continually reset the regional time zone settings, apply, and the computer resets back to its "own" region as soon as it is shutdown. The settings won't keep also if using screen savers, etc. in the Windows environment. I've looked through the questions in the forum, and this seems to be minor and of no problem to anyone else, but I am totally frustrated. Any help is greatly appreciated!
I also thought the infrared in the MBP which allows use of the remote, would also work in Windows. It does not which creates a problem for accessories that require infrared transmission which won't transmit on the MBP in either environment. Back to the old computer for that problem.
Thanks.

I would make sure that you have run the latest MacBook Pro Firmware upgrade from the apple support site
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macbookproefifirmwareupdate12.html.
This may fix certain issues with those settings not saving. Also try resetting the PRAM. From what I have been told the infrared port on the intel Macs only works with the Apple Remote.
Hope this helps.

  • Windows Color Management in Control Panel Settings?

I know enough to disable color management in the printer driver when I enable my photo editing software (PS Elements) to handle color management.
However, what should thecorrect setting for Color Management be in the Windows 7 Control Panel.
Assuming I have selected my printer in the device setting and have uploaded the ICC profile for my printer in = Windows Color Management in the Control Panel
do I check the box next to "Use my settings for this device" ?
do I select "Automatic (recommended)" or "Manual" in the Profile Selection box ?
do I check  "Use as Default Profile" for my paper's ICC profile ?
or will my graphics program automatically override all the settings in Windows Color Management in the Control Panel?
If the graphics program does not override the Windows control panel settings,  what is the proper  permutation of settings.
    Thanks

    Good question seweavermm.
Access to video card control (if available) is typically done through either System Preferences on a Mac or the Control Panel on a PC.  The good news is that since you don't know how to do this then it is high probability it is in default mode and is a moot point.  It is my understanding that not too many video cards have  settings that are not reset by the by the actual calibration process itself yet put this step in for completeness.  The more important and common condition that must be done is setting the monitor to a condition that is stable and allows access to its full gamut.  I suggest to read the details of the instruction manual for the OSD controls for your monitor to verify that the default conditions meet those chacterisitcs.  Typical gotchas would be defaulting to sRGB color space which would limit the colors you could see or having a mode set that does anything dynamic such as scene adjusted brightness.  Another gotcha is when the monitor and software allow adjusting brightness for the ambient light - best to control the ambient light and have the monitor at a constant brightness so as not to invalidate any calibration/profiling done with the monitor.  Note that changing any OSD settings and fiddling with monitor conditions invalidates the calibration done as the calibration is only valid for the fixed conditions of the monitor at the time of calibration.  That was a lot more then the question you asked yet wanted to put things in perspective.  Hope this helps.

  • How to get clamshell mode with Windows 7 on Macbook Pro?

    Hi,
I am running Windows 7 on Macbook Pro using bootcamp. In OS-X, I can use this cool clamshell feature wherein after putting the MBP to sleep by closing the lid, as soon as I connect an external keyboard, mouse & monitor, I get the display on the monitor and immediately start using the keyboard & mouse too, converting the laptop instantaneously to a desktop.
I am trying to do the same thing on Windows 7, close the lid of the laptop to put it to sleep, connect my external monitor, mouse & keyboard, but however the laptop never wakes up (even after moving the mouse & pressing keys in the keyboard). I tried several things in Windows 7. Under Power Options, Disabled "selective Suspend of USB", but that did not help. Next, in the "Device Manager", for the "Root USB Hub" & "Generic USB Hub", I tried to set "Allow this device to wake up the computer", under Properties -> Power Management, but that option is grayed out. I tried to experimented with Sleep types like S1, S2, S3, but except for S3, the other two are shown as "not supported by firmware" (using powercfg option in command line). Countless hours wasted on google search to get this working with no success
I would greatly appreciate any help on this issue.
    Thanks,
    Sri

    @mkultraviolent,
    Thanks for the quick reply.
That seems to be a useful workaround, but I do not find the option mentioned in Display/ Nvidia control panel. However, I find an option in the "Power Options" which has a "Do Nothing" option in the combo box to select what "Closing the Lid" does. Is that what u are referring to?
Also, one problem in this approach is, if we do not sleep when the display is closed, that will keep the internal display (laptop's display) running in clamshell mode even after the lid is closed? (which will heat up the laptop badly).
The exact option I am looking for is, while the laptop is in sleep & lid closed state, connecting the external keyboard/mouse/monitor and pressing a key in the keyboard or moving the mouse should wake the computer from sleep. If this happens, the internal display won't be running. I am able to achieve this in OS-X.
In Windows7, I have a workaround by which I can almost achieve this result, wherein, while the laptop is in lid-closed, sleeping state, after connecting the external devices (keyboard/mouse/monitor), I open the laptop's lid for a fraction of second, quickly move my finger over the touchpad & close the lid again. This wakes up the laptop, & while it is waking up, Windows realizes that the lid is closed and that external devices are connected and gets into clamshell mode (I have verified that in this state, the internal display is not running).
This workaround was fine so far, but I got this hengedocks docking station for my macbook, and I am no longer able to use the workaround, because, after plugging my macbook into the docking station, I cannot open the lid. So, the only option is to make Windows7 realize that external devices are connected & wake up on external keyboard stimuli (Hence the question).
If my question is not clear, this video kind of explains what I want to achieve:

  • Can I install both mac os and Windows 7 on MacBook Pro?

Can I install both mac os and Windows 7 on MacBook Pro?
I saw Windows XP picture on this website. And I would like to try mac os while using Windows 7.
And does Windows 7 on MacBook Pro support high quality game experience? Im sick and tired of reducing to low quality graphics to play some nice games such as GTA 4 and new released games. Hope I can play games with high quality.

If you have a brand new MacBook Pro or have installed Lion on an older one, you can only instal Windows 7 on Boot Camp (for some reason you can't use Vista or earlier). If you have a Windows 7 CD and a license, it's pretty easy to do via Boot Camp. See here for instructions: http://support.apple.com/manuals/#macos
If you install via Boot Camp, Windows 7 will run as fast as your computer is. Generally, MacBook Pros are very fast laptops, so you should be pretty good. That being said, just like any laptop, if it's a cheaper MacBook Pro, you won't have access to as capable graphics processing as more high-end machines. So if it's a newer game with crazy impressive graphics, you will likely not be able to tap into the highest settings on the game on any laptop.

  • I want my macbook pro in factory settings, how can i do that?

I want my macbook pro in factory settings, how can i do that?

Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
For earlier versions of OS X:
    Prepare Your Mac for Sale
Boot from the OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer.  After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.  After DU loads select the startup volume from the left side list then click on the Erase tab.  Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) then click on the Options button.  Select the one pass Zero Data option and click on the OK button.  Then click on the Erase button.
Note: You can skip the Zero Data option if you are not concerned about removing sensitive personal data from the hard drive.  If you choose to skip this part of the process then it is possible for others to recover data from the hard drive.  The Zero Data procedure will prevent others from getting access to your personal information.
This process will take 30 minutes to several hours depending upon the size of the hard drive.  After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Now complete the OS X installation.  At the completion of the installation do not restart the computer.  Instead just shut it off.  The next user will be presented with the Setup Assistant when they turn on the computer just as it would if new out of the box.

  • Cannot boot from usb flash to install Windows 8 on Macbook Pro 13"

    Hi! All
I have a 2011 Macbook Pro 13" and I want to install Windows 8 on it. I use bootable USB stick, which I can boot fine from on my PC, so I assume it's not the USB stick that is a problem. First of all Bootcamp didn't recognise it. Fine, I partitioned the laptop's hard drive myself. Then while rebooting I held the Option key to manually select the USB drive, but it did not appear on the list. As someone suggested on the internet I even replugged USB stick to another slot during while on that screen, but it didn't help too.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can install Windows from a USB drive in one of these Macs:
    - MacBook Pro with Retina display.
    - Mac mini (Mid 2010 and newer).
    - MacBook Air.
    - iMac (Late 2012).
You don't have any of these computers, so you can't install Windows through a USB disk. Its firmware doesn't allow you to start up from your Windows installation disk.
You have to buy Windows 8 on a DVD. You need a System Builder version, which you can buy at Amazon or NewEgg. Follow Apple's steps to install Windows on the MacBook Pro > http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.8.pdf

  • How to completely remove mac os and install windows 7 on macbook pro with retina display 15 inch

how to completely remove mac os and install windows 7 on macbook pro with retina display 15 inch

There's not much sense in purchasing a Mac to run only Windows on it.  Keep in mind that drivers for Windows are a secondary concern for Apple.  While Windows will typicall run fine, things like power managment are not optimized under Windows (you'll get less time on battery while running Windows).  You will also not be able to install firmware updates.  Firmware updates might be necessary whether you run Windows or OS X as they are updates to the code in your hardware and are not OS-specific.  You must be running OS X in order to install a firmware update.  You can do this even if you boot off of an external drive with OS X installed on it.  At the very least, you should keep just a small partition for OS X on your internal drive.

  • Can I install Windows 8 on MacBook Pro retina?

I need to install Windows 8 or 7 in Boot Camp in order to run my embroidery software. What specific form of Windows do I need to install a full version (not an upgrade, since I do not have Windows on the MacBook Pro)? Also, I understand that Boot Camp 5 will not run Windows 8.1. Should I buy Windows 7 and steer clear of 8 altogether?
My Bernina and Floriani embroidery software will run on either Windows 7 or 8.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Joanna

Yes but with that version, style, it is tied to the first set of hardware, computer, it is installed on. So in theory it can't be moved to another set of hardware, computer.

You can run any Windows program once you install Windows on your computer using either Boot Camp assistant or a VM like Fusion, Parallels, or VirtualBox.

  • Hi, I am going to reset my Macbook Pro to factory settings but I would like to back it up first. I have backed it up to an external Hard Drive so if I were to wipe the laptop, would i be able to retrieve all of my files and applications

Hi, I am going to reset my Macbook Pro to factory settings but I would like to back it up first. I have backed it up to an external Hard Drive so if I were to wipe the laptop, would i be able to retrieve all of my files and applications. (Office Mac, Adobe CS6, Logic Pro)

When OS X asks you to restore a backup, it will allow you to select what you want to restore from the backup, Just select the things you need, because if you select everything, you will be in the same status as before restoring the Mac to factory settings. This has nothing to do with erasing the hard drive
It's OK to make backups with Time Machine
