Windows XP PDF File associations broken

After updating to Adobe Reader XI (Windows XP 32 bit),  my PDF file associations no longer worked.
When I double clicked on a pdf file, it would open using a different application (Hex Editor Neo) instead.
The file thumbnails in Windows Explorer did not show the usual Adobe PDF icon: The icon for an unknown file type was displayed.
I first tried rebooting - no difference.
When I looked at the file type associations (via Folder Options in Control Panel), PDF files no longer appeared in the list of registered file types.
When I tried to add a new entry manually, it did not appear to get saved in the registry, so it made no difference.
Clicking the 'Advanced' button under the 'File Type' tab did nothing - the usual 'Advanced' dialog box did not appear.
In the end I had to uninstall Adobe Reader XI and re-install from scratch to get theings to work properly.
Is this a known issue?

This is more informative: where in the registry does Windows store, with which program to open certain file types? - Super User. I went to HKCU\software\classes\applications and added a new key acroRD32.exe
Now in the list of file types in the default programs: associate a file type with a program, I find that I can change PDF to adobe reader.
However, I still can not click on a PDF file and have it automatically open in adobe reader. This is however a minor nuisance. More important to me is that I can not see pdf icons in windows explorer. I have numerous pdf pictures and I would like to find them easily in explorer.

  • Pdf file association broken

After a install of acrobat reader X, acrobat prompts with a "open with " dialog each time a pdf document is opened, tried uninstalling and re-installing, tried using the adobe labs uninstall tool, as it seems there may be something left from the previous install, tried installing previous version and uninstalling, tried manually setting file association.
pdf attachments in outlook wont open at all no prompts at all..have to be saved then they will open after the "open with" prompt
    office 2010, windows xp....any suggestions??

Reinstalling Adobe Reader should normally fix the file association; I don't know why it does not in your case.
Suggestion: try running the Acrobat Cleaner Tool http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html then reinstall Reader.
Note: the Acrobat Cleaner Tool will also remove Adobe Acrobat, if you have it installed.

  • Windows 8 Smart File Association Concept

I have a feature for providing to Microsoft. See the following:
We know Windows 8 tries to integrate the desktop and the touch interfaces into one OS. However, I think Microsoft forgets to update "Windows File Association," accordingly. For example, our Windows 8 can install
these apps: Adobe Reader for desktop and Adobe Reader Touch. Unfortunately, you can set .pdf file association to only one of them in Win8.
Why not if you use the "mouse" or "keyboard" to open a .pdf file in File Explorer, Win8 invokes Adobe Reader for desktop? And why not if you use your finger to open a .pdf file in File Explorer by touching,
    Win8 invokes Adobe Reader Touch?
This concept should be not difficult to be implemented, for example, Windows File Association could provide two kinds of default app setting for one file type. One kind is keyboard/mouse, and another kind is touch.
I hope Microsoft can consider this concept in its future Windows.

  • Pdf file association

In Windows 8.1, why do .pdf files not show the file association when stored on desktop?

You may have to assign Reader to open those files since Windows 8 has it's own reader.

  • Acrobat Pro X in Windows 7 TIFF File Association

I have installed Acrobat Professional 10 in Windows 7.  I am attempting to create a file association in Windows 7 to select Acrobat to open a TIFF or TIF file with Acrobat.  Windows 7 does not recognize Acrobat Pro as a program that will open these files.  Even though I select the program, it just defaults back to Windows Photo Viewer.  Windows 7 just doesn't seem to recognize Acrobat Pro X.

  • Firefox freezes when opening a window with PDF files, etc., yet it works perfectly when using explorer as browser.

I think Firefox mozilla is having issues with Adobe reader. It frequently crashes. I think this may be why my computer freezes when pulling up a PDF file or other text windows, yet, everything works perfect when using Explorer as my browser. It is so frustrating using Mozilla because it gets stuck when opening windows which require pulling up certain types of texts or applications, then I have to wait forever, or, reboot, and once in a while it gets so stuck that I have to take out battery and remove all power sources then start from scratch, and set my computer back to all settings previous to failure. Like I said, this only happens with Mozilla, all other browsers work perfectly well, but I love my Mozilla and it is my preferred browser. Please help. Thanks so much,
    susan

    Hi Susan,
The Adobe plugin in Internet Explorer is a bit different from the one in Firefox, however they're all made by Adobe and they usually come with Adobe Reader.
When you open a PDF file in Firefox, it "calls" Adobe Reader to help it read the file. In this case, the Adobe Reader takes over, and it is responsible for freezing your browser.
I suggest you try the last 4 solutions presented on the [[Opening PDF files within Firefox]] (start with "Re-install the plugin" through "Re-install Adobe Reader").
    Good Luck :D

  • Safari 4 for Windows & Adobe PDF files?

    Hi all,
Running Safari 4, and love the browser with the exception that any time it tries to open a PDF file within the browser it crashes. Has been this way with acrobat 9.0 and also 9.1 Any suggestions/fixes, or at least workarounds to that it will launch the file in the application instead of crashing the browser?
    Thanks,
    Matt

My wife is running Safari 4.0.3 on Windows XP. I have installed Adobe Acrobat Professional and all of its Adobe updates. Adobe preferences are set to open PDFs in the browser, and connection is set to LAN. Safari is set as the default browser. When I try to open a link to a pdf document, Safari crashes with the following error:
    Acrobat Plug-In
The Adobe Acrobat/Reader that is running can not be used to view PDF files in a web browser. Please exit Adobe Acrobat/Reader and exit your web browser & try again.
Windows throws up a dialog saying that it had to close Safari, through its Data Execution Protection service. So, I went to the DEP settings, and told it not to protect memory in Safari. Didn't help.
This did not happen with Acrobat Reader 8.x. Problem started with Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.x. Suggestions?

  • After removing adobe 7 .pdf file association is not pointing to 8 reader

I have about 300 pc's with adobe 7 standard installed. we are removing it and moving everyone to reader 8 due to the recent virus problems. When i run a scripted uninstall "msiexec /x {AC76BA86-1033-0000-BA7E-100000000002} /qn" it removes the standard edition but the .pdf files are not redirected to adobe reader 8 which was already installed. i have found that the easy fix is to just open the 8 reader once and the association is created however with so many machines (all xp) i want to be able to just push a .reg to fix them all in one sweep. any one know what key i need to change?

    1. I assume you have some PDF documents you have been keeping a long time. Look at their modification date. Is it what you'd expect (years ago) or is it all the same, recent?
    2. Has a TXT file appeared in the same folder as the PDFs?

  • What do I need to do to read a Windows editable PDF file on a MAC?

I have an editable pdf file which I can read no problem on various Windows based systems.  However, even after updating to the latest Adobe version for MAC (9.4: AdobeRdr940_en_US_i386.pkg) I can't open the file.  I have OS 10.4.11 on the MAC Book (albeit it is an older version) and Safari 4.1.3.
    Thank you for the help!

The PDF was likely "optimized" when it was saved, and was not made compatible with Reader 9 or lower. You need to contact the author and advise them to re-save it with the proper compatibility for older versions, since you CAN'T use any newer Reader version with 10.4.

  • Windows 7 PrProj Files Associated with CS6 and not CC

I have the CC installed on my workstation.  Since, for some reason, CC doesn't include Encore, I was advised to install Premiere Pro CS6 to get Encore installed.  So I did.
All is well, except now when I double-click on a *.prproj file, Windows wants to open CS6 and NOT Premiere Pro CC.  Since my *.prproj files are created with CC, CS6, of course, won't open them.
I tried to change the file association for the *.prproj file type, but for some reason, Premiere Pro CC isn't an option, and when I manually browse and choose CC, Windows still reverts back to CS6 to open *.prproj files.
What's up with this?  I can open my *.prproj files if I launch Premiere Pro CC and THEN open the file, but I think I should be able to just double-click on the file in Explorer.
Can I uninstall Premiere Pro CS6 and KEEP Encore?  Is there another way to change file assications in Windows?

I have found a solution. I had precisely the same problem. But I want to keep both CS6 and CC, since only CS6 has a direct link to Encore. The problem occurs whenever I install an update to CS6. Right now my Premiere file extensions open with CC. But if I install an update to CS6, the file extensions will go back to opening with CS6.
And I also tried changing the file extensions the way you did and had the same result.
But I found the way to change the setting in the Windows Registry. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/Adobe.Premiere.Pro.Project. Then go to shell/open/command and change the program from CS6 to CC.
Also, if you do a search in the section of HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/Adobe.Premiere.(with various endings following the word "Premiere") and change all instances of CS6 to CC, then you will find that if you go to the file association page, all the files that used to be associated with Premiere Pro CS6 will now be associated with Premiere Pro CC.

  • Pdf files associations... how can I change them? [SOLVED]

Basically when I double-click a pdf file from nautilus, gimp opens.  I have the gnome-extra packages installed (document viewer for exmaple reads pdf files, no), but I have no idea how to reset the file association from gimp to document viewer.  Thanks!

If not, some current gnome user might be better able to assist you. Sorry.
    GOT IT!
    Right-click the file>properties>Open With Tab
    Thanks!
Isn't that exactly what I had suggested in my first post in the thread??

  • Finder Window Sidebar: PDF file under Places?

On my MacBook Pro, several weeks ago I noticed a PDF file listed under "Places" on the sidebar. I have no idea how it got there, and no idea how to remove it. Any suggestions?

Success! I had AppleCare on the line for an hour or more on this one and they could not figure it out. The PDF would not highlight, but I could grab it and pull it out of the side bar. It would typically just flip back into place once I let go. Your suggestions about using the Command key worked. Many thanks!

  • AE file association broken

For some reason, my .aep files are no longer associated with AfterEffects CS3.  I tried re-associating them (with the Open With feature), but it doesn't seem to remember the association after I enter it (the Always Open With This App is checked).
I went so far as to even do a repair installation of CS3, but the same thing remains.  No matter how I try, it will not link the file with the app.  The app and files are all fine (I can load the files FROM the app... just not double click on the files to load the app and file).
Even manually associating them (creating a new extension definition, and linking the app to it) doesn't work.  With all the methods, it ACCEPTS it, but doesn't appear to apply it.  The file icon remains generic too.
Any ideas what I can adjust to get the link happening?  I figure it's a registry thing, although I looked into that as well and couln't get any change.

Well, looks like you have a more serious issue on your system. Perhaps a virus or really your security running amok? The rest is not really clear. I mean, you know better than me what software you have on your system. Extension overload cannot be fixed by justt adjusting the one file type. you realyl need to verify what tools you have. E.g. if you have a packer tool like WinZip it will have options to provide context menu entries and associate itself with a number of file types in the prefs. Same for Quicktime, TextPad etc. That's what you must investigate. If you wanted to do it the manual way, you will have to literally nuke all existing third-party file associations and rebuild all of them....

So, I've prepared reference .xml with associations with Dism /online

What;s the problem? Does anybody know?

    I use the same command cmd /c dism.exe /Online /Import-DefaultAppAssociations:%SCRIPTROOT%\FileAssociations-Windows81.xml
