Windows XP Pro SP1 Won't Install - Yes It Can Workaround : )

Just posting this as a help for others...
I'm doing this to get Windows XP Professional onto a 2006 MacBookPro. I've already swapped in a 320GB hard-drive and partitioned it with BootCamp assistant. You need to be connected to power and have a USB keyboard handy. I used an aluminium mac keyboard with mighty-mouse attached directly to it.
So, following the Apple instructions to partition the hard-disk and install, everything went more or less okay. However once set-up and with XP running, the whole seamless process grinds to a halt because the SP1 version of XP can't 'see' the optical drive and other mac internals. To get around this you need to do a little bit more work but I can confirm I do now have XP working fine on my machine.
So here's how the workaround went for me:
1. Follow the apple Boot Camp Installation & Setup Guide instructions until you get to Step 3 on page 12. At this point you probably get stuck because Windows can't 'see' the DVD, it won't auto-run and you can't navigate to it in MyComputer.
2. Eject the XP disk, exit windows and re-start back in OSX. In Safari go to the MS Downloads Centre and download "Windows XP Service Pack 2 Network Installation Package for IT Professional & Developers" to your downloads folder.
3. Move the WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe file you get to MyDocuments in your Administrator area on the BootCamp partition.
4. Navigate to: www.windowsreference.com/general/error-there-is-not-enough-disk-space-when-inst alling-sp3/ and print off these instructions.
4. Restart in XP and follow the tweak detailed above. This will stop your installation failing due to a false out of space warning. (On the MBP I needed to connect the USB and keyboard-connected mouse in order to get it to detect a right-click).
5. Then run the .exe file transferred from Safari earlier. Everything should update to SP2 (not SP3 as the update file suggests).
6. Shutdown and restart again in Windows. When it restarts just let it do its thing and don't sign up to any security updates or join any networks or anything - you do all this later. (During my install the machine got hung-up whilst shutting down - I just forced power off by holding down the power button and it restarted fine).
7. Log on as administrator and insert the Leopard installation disk. Carry on from where you left off the BootCamp Installation instructions. Ignore the annoying pops and ding-dong noises and go make yourself a cup of tea until its finished.
8. When you come back there may be a couple of 'wizard' windows holding up the final bit. Click continue here and should all finish tidily. Restart when you're ready.
I'm not an IT guy so please don't ask me techie stuff. I just got lucky and got this working so am posting my experience. If it's helpful for you please just go do something nice for someone when you perhaps might not otherwise have done. I believe what goes around comes around. : )

Since your Powerbook connects flawlessly to the Airport Express, I too would assume you have a marginally defective wireless interface in your PC. See if you are allowed to buy a replacement wireless card, with the option to replace it if that fails to solve your problem.

  • Windows 7 Pro SP1 x64 wont install Internet Explorer 10

    Hey all,
Having an issue on my clients machine and I have yet to figure it out. The machine is a Dell Latitude E6330 running a 64-bit Windows 7 Professional SP1 install. Currently the machine has Internet Explorer 9 on it which is unacceptable due to compatibility
with a client website he uses.
Every single time Windows Updates are ran everything will update and install correctly except for
KB2830477 and Internet Explorer 10 giving me Error Codes
    800736B3 and 9C59.
I have attempted installing these two updates manually by downloading them from Microsoft website and installing them in different orders. KB2830477 says that it's not compatible with my system and IE 10 simply fails to install.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, I've hit a wall here.

Method 1:The System File Checker tool
To determine whether the issue that you are experiencing is caused by one or more system files that are used by Windows Vista, run the System File Checker tool. The System File Checker tool scans system files and replaces incorrect versions of the
system files by using the correct versions.
To run the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:
    1.    Click
Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
    2.    Right-click
cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click
    Continue
    3.    At the command prompt, the following line, and then press ENTER:
    sfc /scannow
For more information visit the following link:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936212
Now you can try to perform the Windows update and check if the issue persists.
    Method  2:
System resources, such as file data, registry data, and even in-memory data, can develop inconsistencies during the lifetime of the operating system. These inconsistencies might be caused by various hardware failures or might be caused by software
issues. In some cases, these inconsistencies can affect the Windows servicing store, and they can cause software updates not to work. The System Update Readiness Tool tries to resolve these inconsistencies.
After you download the System Update Readiness Tool, it runs a onetime scan for inconsistencies that might prevent future servicing operations. This scan typically takes less than 15 minutes to run. However, the tool might take significantly longer
on some computers. The Windows Update progress bar is not updated during the scan, and progress seems to stop at 60% complete for some time. This behavior is expected. The scan is still running and you should not cancel the update.
For more information and to download the “System update readiness tool” visit the following link:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
Method  3: You may also try to perform a “Clean boot” and check if the issue persists.
    NOTE: THIRD PARTY SOFTWARE DISCLAIMER
Using Third Party Software, including hardware drivers can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Third Party Software can be solved. Using
Third Party Software is at your own risk.
    Clean boot:
Note If the computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from following these steps. We strongly recommend that you do not use the System Configuration utility to modify the advanced boot
options on the computer unless a Microsoft support engineer directs you to do this. Doing this may make the computer unusable.
    a.
Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights.
    b.    Click Start, type
msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER to start the System Configuration Utility. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click
    Continue.
    c.     On the General tab, click
Selective Startup, and then click to clear the Load startup items check box. (The
Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.)
    d.    On the Services
tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click
    Disable all.
Note Following this step lets Microsoft services continue to run. These services include Networking, Plug and Play, Event Logging, Error Reporting, and other services. If you disable these services, you may permanently delete all restore points.
Do not do this if you want to use the System Restore utility together with existing restore points.
    e.    Click OK, and then click
    Restart.
Note: Reset the computer to start as usual
After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:
    a.     Click Start, type
msconfig.exe in theStart Search box, and then press ENTER. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click
    Continue.
    b.
On the General tab, click the
Normal Startup option, and then click OK.
    c.     When you are prompted to restart the computer, click
    Restart.

  • Unable to install Windows 7 Pro SP1 x64

    Hi guys,
I have a Dell all in one 2310 and Dell had came out to replace the HDD as it was faulty, now when I try to install Windows 7 Pro SP1 onto the unit it comes up with "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computers hardware may not support booting
to this disk. Ensure that the disks controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu.
I have checked in the BIOS and the settings seem ok as in the SATA drives are enabled and on AHCI..
When using diskpart to list the volumes it also cannot see the drive,
    HELP!!

As Rick Dee says, the issue is with the hardware and not related to Windows. Moreover, SATA is in AHCI mode, so more information is needed. It's better to contact Dell technical support, as said by Rick Dee, so that it'll be solved as soon as possible.
The new hard drive may also be replaced, if the situation worsens. Additionally, if the PC is under warranty, Dell technician will assist you in installation of Windows.

  • Boot Camp Trouble: 7 Pro x64 SP1 won't install from OEM Disc

    Hey Apple Support Community,
So I am trying to install a fresh copy of Windows 7 Pro SP1 x64 onto my Mac (specs below), but I run into the same error every time. During the "Expanding Windows Files," phase I get an error message:
Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070570
The particulars of my setup are as follows:
    • Late 2008/Early 2009 Unibody Macbook Pro
    • 2.66Ghz C2D
    • 8GB RAM (OWC)
    • 240 GB SSD replacing the original HDD (OWC, running 10.7.3)
    • 1 TB HDD replacing the optical drive (WD, partitioned 150GB for Windows install)
    • External USB enclosure w/ Apple Superdrive (OWC)
    • Install source is a System Builder DVD of Windows 7 Pro SP1 x64.
I know that pretty much the exact same scenario is detailed in another thread (linked below), but I just wanted to make sure that there wasn't any option I was overlooking before I attempted to source a new installer.
Thanks so much for taking the time to help!
    (Other thread link) https://discussions.apple.com/message/15551760?searchText=0x80070570#15551760?se archText=0x80070570

Did you see thread of another person with trouble installing?
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3808299?tstart=0
    Things to try:
reseat the RAM - been there, done that with someone. Even though said it was "fine" and worked in OS X. Their RAM was not fully seated. On PCs it is not unheard of to remove some RAM during install, or use to be.
If you have two drives - unplug one (the SSD). Having two GPT is an issue. Sounds like this is NOT an issue though.
External Superdrive: not an issue, seems you were able to boot from DVD.
Otherwise, you need to edit a plist, not supported by Apple otherwise (there is a thread on how to add your MacBook Pro model number)
SP1 has been an issue for some systems - not sure why and horrible seeing it is newer and is the current version, but their system did work with pre-SP1
This is a DVD you bought, not one you burned. We all know by now the issue surrounding burning an ISO with Disk Utility.
I'm grabiing at straws but does any of that give you any ideas?

It should. First, turn on BlueTooth on the computer. In BT preferences be sure to check the option to look for all devices. Your remote should be picked up and a notice asking if you want to Pair it with the computer. Select Yes. Once it is paired it can be used to control your computer.

It seems to be an error caused by a defective driver of the controller of the hard disk.... so the controller of the ssd. Or is it something else? how can i install windows via bootcamp on the new macbook pro with retina display?

you format the FAT/MSDOS to NTFS inside the Windows installer.
    Windows installer: Advanced Options tab.
You don't create, you just use the one "BOOTCAMP" that was created by Boot Camp Assistant.
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.7.pdf
create a Windows support software (drivers) CD or USB storage media
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4407
The Boot Camp Assistant can burn Boot Camp software (drivers) to a DVD or copy it to a USB storage device, such as a flash drive or hard drive. These are the only media you can use to install Boot Camp software.

  • New iMac running lion 10.7.2...partitioned drive for  windows xp pro ...successfully installed...up and running(duel boot) but no internet connection on windows side...need drivers?.....please help

new imac running lion 10.7.2     partitioned HD for duel boot and successfully installed windows xp pro (sp2)....have internet through eithernet cable on the mac side but no internet connection on the windows side....need drivers????   please help

I too am running xp spiii on my mac with lion. However I installed xp while running snow leopard then upgraded to lion and both are running fine. If you have the support disc that came with the imac all the relevant drivers are on there. The only other thing i would suggest is that you get spiii and upgrade to that.
    Hope that helps

  • Windows 7 Pro SP1 ships with IE11. I need IE8 that used to run on Win7 - what choices do I have?

    Hi all,
The reason for this post is our need for IE8 for compliance with company requirements (web apps of a big and cumbersome company that will only run on IE8).
We received a non hand manageable number of brand new dell aio 9020 machines with Win7 Pro SP1 and need to downgrade to IE8.
The official microsoft download site features IE8 for Vista, Server 2008, XP and not for Win 7. None works on Win 7.
I would like an official IE8 setup that runs on Win7 as it used to
in the initial versions for sure. Other requirement is that it should be in italian localization, but though important I consider it secondary.
The expensive solutions are to reinstall machines with Win7 off an old version of Win 7 (where to find old Win7 setup disc, how to use current license shipped with the PC's?)
A creative idea I had was to try to extract IE8 form "Internet Explorer Application Compatibility VPC Image" by pulling any dependency / dll ecc but I assume the result might not work. How, if viable is yet a question and it would only be in english.
I am here asking anyone or better official MS people, what solutions there are.
The end result must be an actual IE8 running.
Grateful for help - even pointing to another section or place to ask for this kind of support,
    GG
    PS happy new year!

    Hi all,
I found a solution that I will share in case someone else is seeking this answer.
I did not try the solution provided here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2579295
I instead disabled the windows functionality (not sure wether necessary, will test and edit this)
    Dism /online /disable-feature /FeatureName:"Internet-Explorer-Optional-amd64"
;FYI dism /online /get-features - for a list of windows features to enable or disable
Probably unnecessary to disable anyway but worth sharing dism for other potentially interested users.
Then I uninstalled updates of IE and from IE11 I found IE8 (the base of Win7)
    ; FYI dism /online /get-packages /format:table > updates.txt - then read IE related and uninstall as follows
    DISM.exe /Online /Remove-Package /PackageName:Microsoft-Windows-IE-Hyphenation-Parent-Package-English~31bf3856ad364e35~~~11.2.9412.0 /quiet /norestart
    DISM.exe /Online /Remove-Package /PackageName:Microsoft-Windows-IE-Spelling-Parent-Package-English~31bf3856ad364e35~~~11.2.9412.0 /quiet /norestart
    DISM.exe /Online /Remove-Package /PackageName:Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-LanguagePack~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~de-DE~11.2.9600.16428 /quiet /norestart
    DISM.exe /Online /Remove-Package /PackageName:Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-LanguagePack~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~fr-FR~11.2.9600.16428 /quiet /norestart
    DISM.exe /Online /Remove-Package /PackageName:Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-LanguagePack~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~it-IT~11.2.9600.16428 /quiet /norestart
    DISM.exe /Online /Remove-Package /PackageName:Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-LanguagePack~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~nl-NL~11.2.9600.16428 /quiet /norestart
    DISM.exe /Online /Remove-Package /PackageName:Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-Package-TopLevel~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~11.2.9600.16428 /quiet /norestart
    Restart and find IE8 :-)
For other debloaters or second hand customizers (sysprep is an option, not on all scenarios like OEM installs and no specific concerns)
@echo Clean up PC - wmic product get name to know names of other packages
wmic product where name="Dell Digital Delivery" call uninstall /nointeractive
wmic product where name="Adobe Reader XI  MUI" call uninstall /nointeractive
wmic product where name="Dell Protected Workspace" call uninstall /nointeractive
wmic product where name="DELL OSD" call uninstall /nointeractive
I also had some McAfee unrequested software the command line of which I intercepted through procexp
;remove McAfee SecurityCenter Manually - will integrate with more automated way
    "C:\Program Files\McAfee\MSC\mcuihost.exe" /body:misp://MSCJsRes.dll::uninstall.html /id:uninstall
    ;mcafee shared c runtime
    MsiExec.exe /x {EF79C448-6946-4D71-8134-03407888C054} /qn
