Windows XP Pro with VMware Fusion 3

i tried installing Windows XP Professional 5 times now using VMware Fusion 3.0. nothing has worked. im getting fustrated. it says this:
Windows/system32/config/system is missing or corrupt.
that is all. dont know what to do. ive tried two different installation discs. it should be working.

Hello - I came across this old post of yours. Unfortunately, I need to install VMWare Fusion and Windows onto my Macbook Pro and wondering where is the best place to get a Windows OS disc? I've read that XP is the best version to use and have seen it on some websites for as little as $60 but not sure if that is safe. Also, I don't have an optical drive so would have to buy an external one to install Windows (Fusion 5 can be downloaded from their site i guess). Any advice on the best and cheapest way to get this done would be greatly appreciated!

  • Split screen software of LG ultra wide monitor won't start with windows 7 installed with VMWare Fusion

I am using split screen sofware of LG but it is not working for me with vmware fusion 7. Is this a known problem? I am using an ultra wide monitor of LG (29um65), and installed windows 7 on my mac, by using VMware Fusion. But the software won't work of LG. It won't start. LG can't help me, because normally the software is working by using windows 7 on a windows pc. I got it also working on a  mac , when I used other virtual software as Virtualbox VM, but it seems not to work with vmware fusion 7. Can somebody help me with this problem?

yes, I think you are right, but I used virtual box in the past, and had no problem with the LG software, so it has also to do wit VMWare Fusion I think.
Never the less we still don't have a solution :-)

  • USB interface locked for windows-based application via VMWare fusion 3

recently I found some applications based on windows XP (I used Vmware fusion 3 on mac OS X 10.6.3, macbook pro) can't find the h/w connected to USB interface..e.g.
I have a 3G wireless modem card, the console in windows (of course based on virtual machine VMWARE) says no any modem card founded when I connected to my mac pro with USB interface..
another case is I use ebank client s/w with U-key.. of course doesn't find any U-KEY when i insert it too..
It seems that the USB interface is locked when I use windows-base application via virtual machine, right?

yes, your suggestions are very useful.. I tried again..it asked me to select if connecting to "windows" or "mac".. I made the mistakes before.. Now I selected "windows" and it was okay..
btw, one more question about the bridge connection.. when I dial through my 3G modem card (based on windows XP), I just only use IE as the web browser.. Safari is not ok. I assumed that I should make a bridge connection between 3G modem card and LAN connection, right? If yes, how to do it? I can't select two connections once a time in control panel..
    Thanks for your answer!

  • HT5639 Do I need to uninstall boot camp 4 before I install and update to boot camp 5. I already have windows 8 pro with boot camp 4 installed. Do I need to unistall boot camp 4 or not necessary?

I already have windows 8 pro with boot camp 4 installed on my macair book 11". I have searched the entire articles on how to upgrade boot camp 4 to boot camp 5 but have found no answer as to my question: Do you have to uninstall boot camp 4 drivers before you install boot camp 5? I am not sure if it is ok to install boot camp 5 directly without uninstalling boot camp 4 because there might be driver version conflict. So I have not installed boot camp 5. Is it ok to install boot camp 5 withoust uninstalling boot camp 4? Your answers will be much appreciated. Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You don't have to uninstall Boot Camp 4 drivers before installing Boot Camp 5 drivers. Boot Camp 5 drivers will simply overwrite Boot Camp 4 drivers, so you don't have to uninstall old drivers before installing new ones and making that process easier

  • Need Help Cloning Old Windows XP to Mac with VMWare Fusion

Hello I'm new to the forums and I have been searching all over for a good answer on how to do this.
I have a ton of applications, docs, etc. on my old windows xp machine that I need and I am looking for a way to clone the drive it to my mac that is using VMWare Fusion. I have an external hard drive and have tried acronis true image but apparently that doesnt work. So I am looking for a good step by step process on how to do this.
Also later I want to clone the same windows xp drive to another mac that is using boot camp. will that be the same?
    Thanks

The easiest way would be to put the PC hard drive into an external enclosure and use Disk Utility or a similar tool to create a disk image file that you can copy to the Mac. You may be able to read the PC disk image format and get VMWare to read the resulting image.
Even if you make it that far, I don't think you will be able to get Windows to use it as a boot drive. You will have much more success just creating a new disk image and reinstalling everything with the correct drivers. Then just copy your documents back over using more traditional methods.

  • HT2431 How can I best run old CDs written for Mac OS 9 (Classic)on a MacBook Pro with OS 10.7 with VMware Fusion

I have some old CDs of medical drawings and other references that were written for Mac OS 9 (Classic). These are still excellent resources but I now  have a MacBook Pro with OS 10.7. I also am running VMware Fusion.  How best can I run these programs?

MacBook Pros & OS X Lion don't support classic operation.
Suggest you buy an older Mac that will run OS 9 or run in classic mode while booted into OS X Tiger or below.

  • Ctrl+Alt+End in Remote Desktop Running Windows XP with VMWare Fusion

I am using remote desktop on Windows XP in a VMWare virtual machine on my MacBook Pro. When the remote computer I'm connecting to times out and locks the screen, I need to send ctrlaltend to get back to the login dialog to unlock the screen (ctrlaltdel gets processed by the local windows box and never passed through so ctrlaltend is the appropriate sequence in remote desktop). Only one problem ... my MacBook Pro keyboard doesn't have an End key (or any other key that maps to it as far as I can tell) ... neither does the bluetooth wireless keyboard I use. So how do I send ctrlaltend? Anybody else run into this and find a satisfactory solution short of disconnecting remote desktop and logging in all over again?

That's weird.. I use RDC on my Vista's VM all the time and Ive never encountered this issue.
Try running the RDC in full screen, so that the Ctrl-Alt-Del will go to the RDC.
You can close the RDC window, and change the Options "Send Windows Combination Key" either to the RDC or the VM, or while the RDC in full screen.

  • Problem with vmware fusion 3.1.3 after upgrade to Lion

    Greetings,
I have some problems with my vmware fusion 3.1.1 after my update to OS X v10.7.
i used a MacBook pro 17'' half a year old.
I used VMWare Fusion 3.1.3 and bootcamp to. I have make no backup bevore i upgrade.
The path of my virtual machine couldn't be found and so the virtual maschine didn't start after this upgrade.
I hope that i musn't reinstall my virtual Windows 7 machine.
I'am searching for a resulution and found this:
    http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=display KC&externalId=1003483
Cannot open the disk '/Users/<User Name>/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/Virtual Machines/Boot Camp/dev/disk0s3/Boot Camp partition.vmwarevm/Boot Camp partition.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.
But i would save the virtual machine bevor i reinstall VMWare Fusion 3.1.3.
Have anyone a idea how i found my virtual machine.
    Greetings from Germany

According to: http://roaringapps.com/app:61 Version 3.1.3 has issues with Lion.  There is a 2011 beta that works better.

  • Sharing iTunes on a Mac with VMware Fusion

I want to share my iTunes library on the Mac side of my MacBook Pro with the Windows VMware Fusion machine. I'm hoping to just point the Windows side to my shared Mac iTunes folder. I can see the folder (under Edit...Preferences...Advanced - it shows up as Z:\Music\iTunes) but haven't been able to have the actual songs show up in the Music Library on my Windows iTunes.
    Is anyone else doing this?

There is a separate Windows forum in the Discussions where your question should probably be posted because it has nothing to do with the Finder and Dock.
Ideally, however, you should post it on the VM Fusion forum since the question has to do with using VM Fusion.

  • Mac Mini with VMWare Fusion and Vista

I recently bought a Mac Mini 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB with a 160GB Hard Drive. Thinking of using VMWare Fusion to run Vista Business. Is this configuration advisable as it looks like Vista itself needs a minimum of 2 GB memory? Or should I just use Bootcamp.
Is anyone running Fusion with Vista on a Mac Mini? How is the performance..

I've used WinXP with Fusion on a MacMini and it was fine (but faster in BootCamp). I'm currently running Vista Business on a MacBook Pro in Parallels and while it isn't slow, it certainly is slower than in BootCamp. I expect Fusion would run Vista a bit faster - Fusion does tend to be a bit faster than Parallels but Parallels seems to get along better than Fusion with one of the applications I'm using.
There are advantages to BootCamp and BC isn't incompatible with virtualization. I suggest that you go ahead and install Vista in BootCamp. If you haven't already bought Fusion, download the demo and see how it runs using the BootCamp installation and compare that to BootCamp itself. Then decide.

  • Help with VMware Fusion please!

Hello. I have purchased the full version of VMware Fusion 1.1.2 and installed it on my MacBook running Mac OS X 10.5.2. I also have Windows XP SP2 installed via Boot Camp, which works fine. When I open VMware Fusion, in the list box labelled "Virtual Machines:", there is one virtual machine listed -- "Boot Camp partition", which is obviously the virtual machine I want to run.
Here's the problem -- when I click on it and hit the "Run" button, a dialog box comes up with a progress bar that says it is preparing my computer for the virtual machine or something like that and that this will only happen once. It asks me to put in my administrator password, and after I do, an error message comes up that says: "A failure occurred during processing. An unknown error occurred." -- or something along those lines. This was before I updated to 1.1.2. Now, having updated it to 1.1.2, when I try to run the Virtual Machine, I get a different error. This time it comes up before I'm asked to enter my administrator password, and this time it says: "Could not create virtual disk for your Boot Camp virtual machine."
Can someone please help me figure out what is wrong here. I should mention that I also have Parallels Desktop (it was a gift) installed, which works absolutely fine. I would like to see the difference between Parallels and Fusion, and since I paid for it, I'd like it to work. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  • Does TM backup files stored in Windows 7 running inside VMWare Fusion?

I have installed VMWare Fusion with Windows 7 running inside it. There are a number of files saved and application installed there. Are these being backed up on the Time Capsule during the regular backups or do I need to back up Windows apps and files separately?

If the virtual machine is on a drive that Time Machine backs up, it'll be backed up. Quit the emulator before Time Machine runs to ensure the backup is valid; click here for more information.

  • Bootcamp partition restriction with vmware fusion

I have a 2 TB hard drive on my iMac that I was going to use to install windows. Using bootcamp, all went well. I put Vmware Fusion on and it worked well. Later I thought it might be nice to have 2 partitions on this hard drive so I re-partitioned the hard drive (not using bootcamp) and then installed windows, again no problem. The problem occurs when I then put on Vmware Fusion. Seems that program is very sensitive to the bootcamp created partition and to use any other program causes Vmware Fusion to fail. Doing some research, I thought I read that bootcamp will ONLY create one partition, no option for two partitions. My question is: Am I reading this correctly? Can bootcamp only make one partition? Is there a hack around this? I hate having a 2 TB hard drive with only one partition.

    Hi again,
Boot Camp is a (very limited) utility for creating a non-mac partition on a Mac volume (by Apple). That's why it'll allow to create only 1 partition on a Mac OS hard drive.
This has to be on the HD where there is Mac OS X already - so you can't use BootCamp on your 2nd HD.
If you install 2nd macOS on the 2TB HD, start from there & then partition it with BC, then you should be able to start a bootcamped windows from there.
VMware doesn't have to be used with the help of BootCamp - I have both Parallels & VMware installed without the BootCamp.
As a matter of fact you can install Parallels & VMware from an .iso image (which you can't use with BC) - but Windows has to be installed the same way as with BS = it will take ± 1hour to install.
Also - you can store the resulting 'file' (which in my case I'm storing on my external 'My Book' 2TB hard drive) on any HD which is connected to your iMac.
The 'file' is stored as 'Windows 7.vmwarevm' - my is 13Gb actual size but with-in the win7 I have on it the size is = 40Gb {Local Disc (C:)}.
All these 'Virtual Machines' are automatically compressed by the VMware application.

  • Desperate for a little help with VMware Fusion tools

I tried the Fusion discussions group on this question but got nothing, so please don't tell me to try there; I already have.
I am using VMare Fusion 2.0.6 on my MacBook running 10.6.4; Windows OS is XP Home edition, SP3
I find more and more applications that previously did not work well in OSX are now running nicely on my MacBook (i.e., various applications from Garmin) and that I rarely boot up in Windows.
However, not long ago I did boot up in Windows and saw the alert, “VMware tools is out of date. Choose the virtual Machine > Install VMwre Toold Menu.” I did so and it failed, miserably. I lost tools completely, everything was a bloody mess.
I looked for help/a solution on the VMware site, found it, but it was beyond my capability. I simply could not figure out how to do what it was directing me to do.
I moved my Virtual Machine folder from a backup of my MacBook back to the MacBook; I am back to a point where all is well but I am also, naturally, getting the “VMware tools is out of date. Choose the virtual Machine . Install VMwre Toold Menu.”
When I choose "Virtual Machine . Install VMwre Toold Menu", I get this alert: You cannot install the VMware Tools package until the guest operating system is running. If your guest operating system is not running, choose cancel and install the VMware Tools Package later.
Isn't the "guest operating system" OSX on my MacBook? Well of course it's running; how the heck could you be running Fusion if OSX isn't running? There must be something here I just don't understand.
Does some kind soul have the time and patience to explain to me what I am obviously missing here so I can get on with it and update VMware Tools?
Many, many thanks if someone can

OK, here's the rest of the story.
I followed the above instructions, sort of...
    Removed Tools as directed.
A restart was required to finish the removal.
Restarted, went to Virtual Machine > Install VMware Tools package and got the, for me, dreaded - Warning, you cannot install the VMware Tools package unless the guest operating system is running, etc., so I clicked on Cancel.
I also got the Found New Hardware Wizard, which I cancelled out of.
I went to Virtual Machine > CD/DVD > Choose a disk image and navigated to "/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/isoimages/windows.iso" as I was directed, clicked on Open, and nothing happened.
In Windows, I then went to the CD/DVD drive, to run the setup.exe manually.
Among the choices there I found both VMware Tools and VMware Tools 64 and forgot I was told to run setup.exe. I asked again and was told to run VMware Tools. I did so and that fixed it.
Later, I was told that I should have chosen setup.exe NOT the VMware Tools.msi, but that since setup.exe calls the VMware Tools.msi it's probably a moot issue as long as I received a message that VMware Tools were successfully installed.
So, I guess the correct thing would have been to run setup.exe, but running VMware Tools also did the trick.
Hope this helps someone else out if they stumble across it.
