Windows XP Professional Task Manager

Hi,
I'm using a Windows XP Professional Edition Machine that does not open Windows Task Manager. I've tried CTRL+ALT+DEL and clicked Task manager and nothing opens. I've tried CTRL+ALT+ESC and absouloutley nothing comes up. I've gone to the directory- C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskmgr    and double clicked to open it and a message comes up with saying;
C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskmgr.exe
The Specified path does not exist.
Check the path, and then try again.
I'm also using antivirus- McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.0.0 with the newest Virus definitions. I have scanned the computer thoroughly, but nothing has been found.
Help would be highly appreciated.

    Hi Blisk1,
    Thank you for your update.
I would like to suggest you refer to the link below to check the issue (although it applies to Windows xp):

As I know, if the service is not configured to log on as the local system account, it may not start.
To check the settings for the service:
    1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Administrative Tools.
    2. Click Computer Management.
    3. Expand Services and Applications, and then click Services.
    4. Right-click the Task Scheduler service, and then click Properties.
    5. On the General tab, make sure that the startup type is set to automatic, and that the service status is Started. If the
service is not running, click Start.
    6. On the Log On tab, make sure that the local system account is selected, and that the Allow service to interact with desktop
check box has a check mark.
    7. Click OK, and then quit Computer Management.
    Hope it helps.

  • Windows 7 ultimate task manager can not open file location

hi, I just re-installed the Windows 7 Ultimate on my laptop several weeks ago, everything goes well until I find this error. When I open Task Manger and right click one process, then an error occurs when I click "Open File Location". It shows as
    "taskmgr.exe
This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."
There is no any information in the windows event log about this error and I try to search online but without any solution. Could anyone help me figure this out? TIA!

    Hi,
Since it prompts that it is related with file association, you can try fixing it.

I have installed FF 8, the problem is whenever i try to launch, it never launches (directly or indirectly), but when i check in the task manager it shows FF running. I have installed it on windows XP professional. Never gave an error, no messages, etc. I have disabled all the addons.

The "System Tray" is located at the very bottom right of your screen and is a list of most/all running applications that will show in this list.
For your SysFader issue, this "may" be the problem:
1 Find the "My Computer" desktop icon and right-click it. A pull-down menu will appear. Select "Properties."
2 Click on the "Advanced" tab. This will load a new page of options.
3 Select the "Visual Effects" tab at the top of the window and deselect "Animate Windows when minimizing and maximizing," "Fade or slide menus into view," "Fade or slide Tool Tips into view" and "Fade out Menu items after checking."
4 Click "OK." This will remove most if not all of the Sysfader effects, at the same time correcting related errors that used to come up during opening a new file or program.

  • Upgrade to iTunes to 10.4.0.80 caused 100% CPU usage when I start iTunes. Task manager shows iTunes 50% mobile 50%. I am running Windows XP Professional sp3. iPhone 3 ios 4.3.5

I upgrade to iTunes 10.4.0.80. Since then iTunes uses 50% of the CPU and Mobile uses 50% CPU. I let it run for hours and the CPU usage stayed at 100%. The phone will partially sync but takes a very long time. This was not a problem before the iTunes upgrade. I am running iTunes on Windows XP professional SP3. It does not matter if the phone is connected to the USB port of the PC. When iTunes starts it runs the CPU at 100%.

Yes!  I am not the only one with this problem.  Ever since the latest iTunes update, the CPU runs up to 100% using both the mobiledevice and itunes itself.  The store won't work either!  I'm also on Windows XP.  I too have tried everything I can think of but nothing has helped.  I really hope they get an update out with fixes soon.  This is really annoying!!

  • Firefox window is not shown and not even in the tasks bar, but there is a process running in the task manager

Clicked on the Firefox icon , but window did not appeared, checked in the Task manager, there is a process running with firefox.exe, and could not see any icon in the task bar adjacent to start button

I discovered that when the "Firefox is already running . . . ." message pops up I can fix it by doing the following [note: I get the same message for the Thunderbird e-mail program too] : 1. I open 'TASK MANAGER" and click on the "Processes" tab. 2. Next I scroll down until I see Firefox.exe *32 in the leftmost column (or Thunderbird. exe *32 if the message came up there), highlight that line by clicking on it and then click on the "end process" button on the right side on the bottom. 4. A pop-up window will come up but ignore its message and click on the "end process" button in the pop-up window. The program should then start the next time you click on the icon..
While that saves the need to restart your PC to fix the problem, I have yet to find any information as to the reasons for those two processes to show up in the first place. I'm running the 64 bit Win 7 Professional and do not know if that has something to do with those two processes running from time to time or not. The message comes up often but not all the time and I haven't been able to pinpoint any action on my part where the message comes up if I do '''X '''or the message never comes up when I do '''Y''' before closing Firefox or Thunderbird.

  • Flash Player - Windows 7 - 2 Processes in Windows Task Manager - Slowing performance?

Hello...I was hoping someone could help me fix this issue.  I live on my computer for work so this affects me daily and has for many, many, many months.  Firefox works great until Flash Player launches and then everything I do in my browser slows down to a speed similar to a turtle in a chess match.  When I go into the Windows Task Manager to close the Flash Player process so I can, for example, browse a text-only page or fill out a discussion question form on Adobe's forum page without 5 to 10 second delays between instructions (moving the mouse, clicking on something in the browser, typing etc.), I find not one but two processes in the Windows Task Manager. I assume there should only be 1 process and was wondering if it was something I could fix on my machine somewhere other than doing it 15 times a day using Windows Task Manager to stop the process(es) so my machine will work properly.
I highly suspect it is the Flash Player that causes the issue as every single time I kill the process, my machine works like it is supposed to (fast etc.).  As soon as the Flash Player Plugin process(es) starts everything comes to a crawl.  Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this or how to fix it?  I use the latest version of Firefox, the latest version of Flash Player, Windows 7 Professional (latest updates installed), I eat right, get good sleep, give to charity, and love my mom.  What am I doing wrong?          Thanks for your help in advance!

    Hello Chris and Sameer,
thank you for getting back on this issue.
    To answer your questions first:
    - no, I have not posted this issue in the connect forums - I will do and point to this discussion
    - Sameer, I have tested the webcam on the website you pointed out, it is not working with Firefox but it is working in Chrome
I also need to give you an update on the current versions I use:
Win 7 Pro (64bit) (all updates included)
    Firefox 21.0
    IE 10.0.9200.16576
    Chrome  26.0.1410.64 m
    Flash Player 11.7.700.202
    Adobe Connect Addin 11.2 r261
I tested the webcam via FP with Firefox, IE and Chrome in the versions mentioned above. Only in Chrome I can run the WebCam on the www.testwebcam.com website. Once I start the adobe connect meeting and want to start the webcam the Connect Addin stops working with the popup as shown in post 3 of this discussion in all three browsers.
All components have been uninstalled and installed again (except for IE)  for testing with no change in the result. I have also rolled back the computer to the system recovery point furthest back in time to see if any other installation might be the cause. But no luck either.
I am happy to post the logs but would need advise where to find these or how to retrieve.
    Thanks!
    Konwill

  • Windows is unable to locate the Task Manager.

    Hello,
I recently had a frozen application which won't close by any means and I found this software called "process explorer" (which I later found out that it can also be downloaded through microsoft.com? something to do with sysinternals.com)
to do the job but, it didn't do the job either and was annoying as hell. I did the mistake of replacing the real task manager with this software (using an option in the menu bar) and the task manager won't start now. :(  even tried to start the app by
running the taskmge.exe as an administrator and I am the only admin of this computer. It still won't run.
Since this "process explorer" does not need to even be installed (because it comes as a .rar file and has to be run from there without an option to install it), I'm finding it even harder to get back to where I was before using it.
The error message on the windows says "Windows cannot find the 'C:\windows\sysytem32\taskmgr.exe' Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."
    Thanks for any help.

  • How do I stop Firefox from thinking it crashed and doing a recovery when forced to use Windows Task manager to close a bad URL that I never want to go back to?

Long question, I know :~) There are web sites that I may visit that will not allow me to exit the site, so I use Alt-Ctrl-Del in Windows to start the Task Manager and force the site to close by ending the program. The new version of Firefox (31.0) thinks that Firefox crashed and send me right back to the source of my problem.
Your documentation for this process is as follows:
    After a crash
Due to unexpected issues such as problems with a website, software errors, or an accidental loss of power, Firefox may unexpectedly close. In these situations, Firefox can restore the pages that you were visiting when it is restarted. Firefox will automatically restore your previous session, the first time you launch it after a crash.
If Firefox crashes a second time, the Restore Session (i.e. "Well, this is embarrassing") page will appear when you next launch Firefox.
...and this is what I found trying to stop this process. Next, when I am forced to use Task Manager to close Firefox a second time to stop a badware site, then the 'Well this is embarrassing' dialog appears and I am finally safely away from the URL.
I do not want Firefox automatically sending me back to a problem site.
Thank you for any procedure you can suggest to stop Firefox from restoring problem web pages, Art Clapton

I am unwilling to attempt navigation away from these sites. The pop-ups that occur on the attempt to leave a site or to close the browser are exit traps offering incentive to stay.
Once upon a time, when the internet was less dangerous, I would be willing to close the exit pop-ups. Now, after twice being infected with malware trying to close the pop-ups, I now force close whichever browser I am using.
Recently, I clicked on the red X to close one pop-up, and it installed a trojan that I had to pay to be removed. When I clicked on 'Leave' in another exit pop, it didn't exit and it turned out I was giving permission to run a script file. Now that criminals have learned these exit pop-ups can be used to force a click action, the sites using them have become dangerous.
If I force the browser to close using Task manager, Please tell me how to stop FireFox from sending me directly back to the same site because it mistakenly believes it crashed when it did not. I forced it to close because I was on a site that had taken control of my browser and was not allowing me to leave the site.
No other browser sends me back to the potentially dangerous sites. I prefer Firefox, but the new version must have a setting that allows me to get safely away from a problem site?

  • I am trying to launch Firefox 9.0.1 on Windows 7 but the application window isnt visible even though there is a firefox.exe process running in task manager.

I am trying to launch Firefox 9.0.1 on Windows 7 but it isnt working. I try to launch it and the application window does not show. When I look at the task manager and then look at the Applications tab, Firefox isnt listed. If I go to the Processes tab, there is a firefox.exe*32 process listed. Each time I double click the Firefox icon, a new firefox.exe process is spawned but there is never a visible instance of the Firefox application.
There are no errors in the application logs. I end up just having to kill the processes.
I tried launching in safe mode by holding down the shift button but the same thing happens.
Any suggestions on what to try? It has never worked since upgrading from version 8. I tried un-installing and re-installing

I went through everything mentioned in the link you posed and nothing detailed there resolved the problem.
The Profile folder didnt exist so I created it. Made sure the perms were good and that it was not read only.
There are no default folders appearing under the profile folder when I start Firefox.
I have Firefox installed to my E drive.
Nothing happens. The process appears in the task manager but no application shows up.
Cant start it in safe mode, cant run the profile manager.

  • Firefox won't start after upgrade, it appears on the windows task manager but closing the firefox.exe doesn't help

I upgraded to firefox 4 and it asked me to restart the system, since then it stopped working. it just won't open. I have windows xp and when I click on the firefox icon I see firefox.exe in the windows task manager under 'processes' I tried ending the task but it wont help. i also tried removing and reinstalling.. didn't help either :( I also checked if Kaspersky might be blocking it but it isn't

The only thing that worked for me was installing an older version (3.6) and it started working fine... I dont even want to try upgrading it to 4 again..

  • In task manager windows 7 64 bit, Firefox.exe *32 won't end after Firefox locks up and doesn't respond and windows closed.

My firefox browser window locks up...I wait way to long and nothing updates, I close the window. Try to open Firefox again, but can't as system detects a copy running. Task manager shows Firefox.exe *32 running. I click on Firefox.exe *32 and click close....wait and nothing closes.
REBOOT - yeah for about 30 minutes when it happens again.

The support article on Firefox "hanging" has a few pointer on Firefox failing to fully shut down and clean up after itself. Does anything here help:

I have the "techie" answer for all of you. According to the tier 2 support at Norton Help Desk, the latest live update from Norton "utilizes Visual Studio 2012 which enables SSE2 instructions" and my processor can not handle that.
He said they are "working on a solution" and offered to reply back on Wednesday / Thursday this week if a solution could be found...
