Windows XP restarts immediately after logging in

So, like the title explains, whenever I log in to windows XP, it immediately restarts. The problem started today when I went onto my Windows partition for the first time in about 5 days. Prior to this, I had installed Leopard back when it was released (I pre-ordered it) and it worked fine. I had run software updates, switched back and forth between mac and windows, and had no problems whatsoever. But today, when I log in to Windows, it immediately shuts down. I had run a software update yesterday, so I am not sure if that had something in it that caused windows to act so randomly. Any advice on how to fix this would be great. I have a MacBook Pro, 2gb RAM, 2Ghz Processor, Windows XP SP2.

I am assuming that Windows restarts as soon as the desktop is about to appear. I am assuming this since I am still not clear at which point Windows begins the reboot process.
Fortuny's response to your original question has one other step that you may or not have completed. That step is where he asks you to boot in safe mode and then:
1. From the start button choose RUN
2. You will get an option in a window to enter some text and you would enter MSCONFIG
This will open a window with several tabs and you should choose the tab marked STARTUP ITEMS (I am not sure of the exact name but is close).
In this window you will see a bunch of programs that run immediately at startup and the active programs are marked with a check. If you see a program that shouldn't be there then uncheck it and reboot to see if it made a difference. Careful, just because a program name appears strange to you does not mean that it does not belong there.
Out of my own curiosity I would like you to uncheck the program named KYBRDMGR (not sure of the spelling but close. This program controls the apple keyboard and assigns tasks such as CD EJECT, SOUND VOLUME etc to appropriate keys). Uncheck it and reboot normally to see if it made a difference. Let us know.

  • Ausus (window 8) black screen after log-in

I have recently been having problems with my laptop. After I lo-gin, a black screen appears with only a white cursor. I had the problems after I installed
a recent Window 8 updates. I watched many youtube videos and had no luck at all. I decided to do a factory setting and my laptop shut down at 26%. Whenever I turned it back on, "attempting repairs" "diagnosing computer" pops up and after
that goes away, error happens. I tried once again and the same thing keeps popping up once i booted my computer up.

    Reinstall your video driver
Right-click the taskbar, and then click Start Task Manager.
Click the Processes tab, click explorer.exe,
    and then click End Process.
Click File, and then click New
    Task (Run).
In the Open text box, enter explorer.exe,
    and then click OK.
    Click the Start button ,
enter device manager in the search box, and then, in the search results, click Device
    Manager.
Double-click Display adapters, right-click your display device, click Update
Driver Software, and then follow the steps in the wizard that appears.
    Note
After the driver is reinstalled, you might need to restart your computer again to complete the installation. You might also need to adjust the screen resolution to its previous setting. For more info, see Change
    your screen resolution.
If these steps solved the problem, you're done. If not, go on to the next set of steps.
    Check for registry issues
Right-click the taskbar, and then click Start Task Manager.
Click the Processes tab, click explorer.exe,
    and then click End Process.
Click File, and then click New
    Task (Run)
In the Open text box, enter explorer.exe,
    and then click OK.
    Click the Start button ,
enter regedit in the search box, and then, in the search results, click regedit.exe.
Browse to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Click to select the WinLogon key, and then, in the right pane, click Shell.
The value of Shell in the Data column should beexplorer.exe. If the value of Shell isn't explorer.exe,
double-click Shell, and then, in the Value
data text field, enterexplorer.exe, and then click OK.
Close the registry editor, and then restart your PC.
If these steps solved the problem, you're done. If not, go on to the next set of steps.
Start the computer in safe mode and run System Restore
    Click the Start button ,
click the arrow next to Shut Down, and then click Restart.
    Do one of the following:
If your computer has a single operating system installed, press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts. You must press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, try again by waiting until the Windows
logon prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.
If your computer has more than one operating system, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system you want to start in safe mode, and then press F8.
On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Safe
    Mode, and then press Enter.
Log on to your computer with a user account that has administrator rights. When your computer is in safe mode, you'll see the words Safe
Mode in the corners of your monitor.
    Click the Start button ,
type "system restore" in the search box, click System Restore, and then click Next.  If
you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Choose a restore point when your PC worked as expected, click Next, and then click Finish.
    Restart your computer normally.

  • MBP freezes, shuts down, restarts, repeats after log in

Late 2007 MBP recently upgraded to Yosemite started freezing, shutting down by itself, and then restarting by itself.  I log in, and within anywhere from 10 seconds to 3 minutes after my screen fully loaded, repeats this.  120 gig hard drive is way full.  So pretty sure that is part of problem.  Has been sluggish for weeks.  Have about 18 gigs free.  Attempting to move things off but it won't stay on long enough to do this.
This morning I managed to access Disk Utilities for repair upon start up, but I was trying different keystrokes to do this. (Posed question for proper keys to do this in another post, but feel free to answer here.)  It performed disk repair and showed all the steps it took.  Two items appeared in red:
Incorrect number of file hard links
Orphaned file inode (id = 35716717)
    Then in green:
The Volume MacIntosh HD was repaired successfully.
A couple of lines farther down appeared:
Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
By this time the timer status showing the repair taking place was gone and I didn't do anything for about ten minutes.  Then I restarted, but the problem has continued. While doing this I was offline.

I forgot to add that right after the note that the HD was repaired successfully appeared:
File system check exit code is 0.

  • My iTunes 10.5 restarts immediately after I quit the program. How can I fix this?

It is very frustrating. I quit iTunes and it starts back up seconds later. It seems after I quit it 10 or more times, it will finally stop restarting. To my knowledge, this has only been occuring over the past few weeks and I'm pretty certain is was about the time I last updated iTunes. Maybe it's a coincidence and something else is to blame?
After searching this community, I found someone who had a problem like this on his Mac back in 2009 that turned out to be a third party widget he was running. I do not use any third party music related stuff on my PC (not a Mac). The only other music-related software I have is Spotify and Windows Media Player and they do not appear to interact with iTunes. I do not have any iDevice's (like an iPod or iPad) continuously hooked up that might be causing it to restart like this. I'm not wirelessly syncing my iDevices either.
I'm at a loss for what to do. I now have to decide if I really need to use iTunes at a particular moment, because I know I'll have to close the program up to ten times to get it to stay closed. Is this a known bug? Any solutions? I would rather not leave iTunes running in my system tray all day long and tie up resources.

  • Windows 7 Restart issues after waking from sleep/hibernating on y430

I've installed windows 7  and installed all drivers but one driver that no one on this message board has solved yet (it is detected as an unknown device - ACPI/CPL0002) When I wake the computer from sleep and hibernating the computer cannot restart properly.  It would stop the hard drive after windows has finished the shut down process but the power lights will stay on. I then have to hold the power button down until the system powers off.
I have updated my y430 to the latest bios but this problem still persists.
Any idea on why this is?
    Thanks

  • How do I stop windows from re-opening after logging in?

I have read a lot of the recent discussions regarding this default which starts up all the windows and tabs (in the case of Safari) when logging in.
I know that you can manually ask the system not to do this by deselecting the "Reopen windows when logging back in" but can you set a default for this deselection?
Whenever I am automatically logged out through my Security settings, I have no way to deselect this option so I have to wait for ages while my computer starts up all the windows, apps, and tabs that were open at log out or shutdown.
If there is no default option, then if an Apple person is reading this, kindly add one in the next update.
    Thank you.

This seemed like a good solution so I immediately put it to the test following your clear instructions to the letter.
Incredibly a folder was written into this "Saved Application State" folder as you can see:
If you look closely you can see that the folder is still locked because of the tiny lock symbol in the bottom left corner of the folder icon.
How is this possible and do you have another solution?

  • Unable to retrieve Home page report immediately after log in

I Created a new report and made it as a Homepage report. But unlike the other delivered home page report it is not giving the data immediately, It says "Generating analysis... Click here to view the results" and once I click this link I get the prview. Can you please let me know what the issue is?
    Thanks,
    Vamsi.

    Hi Vamsi,
Ondemand support would generally be able to set this option "ON" to load immediately if you raise a request
On the other hand if you deliver the report through iframe, then it gets loaded automatically

  • Automator Copy Finder fails after logging in

Created a simple automator app to backup folders to external drive.  Works fine initially.  Later disabled auto login, resulting in having to enter password each time computer sleeps, log out, or restart.   After log in, Automator app fails with message no permission to copy to disk.  If I delete the Copy Finder Items step and recreate it, it works fine until the next login.  Re-enabled auto login to avoid the hassle for now.  Anybody else have this problem and come up with a solution?

As far as the Finder is concerned, the comparison is based on file name only.
It doesn't care about file size or modification date. If the name is the same the existing file will be replaced.

  • How do I stop OSX Lion from reopen windows after logging in?

Please advise.  This is aggrevating me.  Everytime I shut down my computer, I have to uncheck the box that states, Reopen windows after logging in.  I don't want to do this everytime I shut my computer down.  If I don't completely log out of every single application, when I start my computer and log-in, the programs I was using before I shut-down all come back up and sometimes this freezes my computer and I have to force shut down.  Any suggestions would be great.  Thank you.

It is one of the over 250 new features of the World's Most Advanced Operating System called Resume.
When choosing Restart, Sleep or Shutdown there is a checkbox you can uncheck to prevent the apps from launching.
Also in System Preferences > General there is a hard-to-find checkbox under "Number of recent items" you can turn off.
If you want to turn it off on a per app basis, (TextEdit is by example, replace TextEdit with the name of the app)
Launch Terminal and copy/paste this at the prompt...
defaults write com.apple.TextEdit NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows -bool false
    Press return.
    To turn off Resume globally...
    chflags uchg ~/Library/"Saved Application State"
    Press return
The reverse of the first one is to replace false with true.
The reverse of the second one is
    chflags nouchg ~/Library/"Saved Application State"

  • Photoshop Elements 13 running in Windows 8.1 hangs immediately after starting

Photoshop Elements 13 running in Windows 8.1 hangs immediately after starting.  Has to be shut down by Task Manger.  Task Manger shows that it is still using some CPU.  Ran Procmon (part of Sysinternals) which shows that it is in a loop.   Stack trace shows it is executing code in AMTValidateProductLicense.dll.  Started happening about a month after I installed PSE.  Everything used to work fine at first.  Have tried going back to an old image of Win 8.1 on a different hard drive, otherwise same computer, and installed PSE 13 from DVD.  That installation never worked, it aways hangs.  If I do a clean boot, it sometimes runs long enough for me to click on a menu item and then hangs the same way.  And, yes I bought a new DVD to run on this computer, never been used in any other way.  Any ideas how I can get PSE running properly?

It really doesn't look like a licensing issue, it seems to be code in the area of license validation that isn't working.
I took your suggestion and initiated a couple of chat sessions with support, but so far still no luck.  The latest session with Neeraj seemed to be promising.  After some investigation he asked to reinstall.  First he uninstalled with Revo Uninstall, which seemed to be pretty thorough.  That required a restart, so he set things up to restore his conference session and took my phone number.  Unfortunately I guess his connection didn't come back.  When I didn't hear from him after a couple of hours I tried installing Photoshop and Premiere myself.  As before, Premiere works and Photoshop doesn't.  When I start Photoshop, the window opens and for a couple of seconds menus open when I click on them.  Then the window freezes and I have to use Task Manager to kill it.  So basically, I've tried several things but I'm back where I've been all along, I can't get Photoshop to work.  I'd really appreciate suggestions about something else to try.
I wish someone at Adobe was interested in the Process Monitor traces I've made, because I'm sure someone who knows the code would be able to figure out pretty quickly what's happening.  Is it trying to read a file that's not there, failing to write a file, failing to make an internet connection or what?  It really shouldn't be this hard to figure out.
