Windows XP restore discs & lost recovery partition

If I have two M series Thinkcentres having compatible machine types. Can I use a set of restore discs from the first Thinkcentre to factory install Windows XP onto a second Thinkcentre where the recovery partition and install drive became corrupted?
Also do Thinkcentre applications and utilities install under a retail copy of Windows XP (installed onto a Thinkcentre)?
e.g. Fingerprint reader software, Rescue and Recovery, Client Security, etc.
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Yes, if the model is the same (same first 4 digits) you can use the recovery discs on the second machine. You will load the disks, and then when that process is finished, you will select F11 at boot and then restore to factory state once the Windows Recovery loads.
No Thinkcentre specific applications will load with a retail copy of Windows. You will have to go to the Lenovo download pages and install the apps individually.

  • Lion restore w/out recovery partition or discs?

I just purchased my first Macbook. A used mid 2009 15". I am new to Mac computers. It did not come with any discs and there is no recovery partition either.
I am wanting to restore the whole system due to the previous users leftover stuff still there. I do not care about saving any information that is currently on the computer.
I have tried the Recovery Disk Assistant on a thumb drive and have attempted the Internet Recovery however from what I understand, without the recovery partition, both of these options will not work and neither one has worked.
What is the best way to go about restoring? Will upgrading to Mountain Lion via the App Store give me the option to, or automatically create, the recovery partition? (then I can do a restore from one of the previously mentioned ways) Or do I find a friend who has some discs laying around that I can use?
    Thanks for the help!

  • Need to restore but do not have a restore point or recovery partition.

Hi guys. I have an HP Notebook 2000-365DX with Windows 7 Home Premium.   Its so cluttered and I need to restore back to original settings.  I had installed Ubuntu (partitioned)  a while back and was very stupid because I deleted my HP Tools recovery partition.  Now, I have searched here on HP.com to order a recovery disc and apparantly I cannot find one for my specific model.  So what I have done is downloaded a Windows 7 Home Premium .iso file (thanks to a kind soul on these forums) and I am needing to download all the drivers for my laptop as well but HP is having some issues right now so I can't download them (which is fine I'm in no hurry).  So that's about as far as my knowledge goes.  I have my Win7 disc, and will hopefully soon have my drivers disc.  What I don't know how to do is erase my computer to start from scratch installing Win7 again then all my drivers.  I have read that DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke) wipes your hard drive clean but that seems very extreme.  Seems like I would use that to erase my hardrive if I were selling my laptop or erasing evidence, but if that's my solution then I am cool with that.  So really, I'm wandering what I should do now.  And will I really have to re-install my drivers as well?  Any help would be so greatly appreciated!!!!!

Hi, You can remove all the existing partitions on the HDD during installation as follows. Start the installation. When you get to the 'What type on installation' screen, choose the Custom ( advanced ) option and then click on Drive options (advanced). Here you can delete all the existing partitions one at a time by click on the partition to highlight it and then selecting delete. When done, you will have just one entry named 'Unallocated space' - just proceed with the installation. Regards, DP-K

  • How Can I Restore My formated Recovery partition ( D:\ ) ?

    Hello
First, I'm Sorry For My Poor English.
I have HP Pavilion 2020ev Laptop
But i have a SUPER BIG PROBLEM
I got a Real bad virus about 4 week ago And That Virus Format My "D" (recovery Partition ) and "F" (1TB External Hard Drive) .
I lost My Rocovery Drive And Now I Have To Restore My Windows Without DVD/CD .
Is there any solution to take back my recovery drive ?

You're in a tough spots here. The hidden partition is wiped out and you lost your DVD's. I would call tech support and see your options about being able to have the recovery disks shipped to you or worst case scenarion, that may not be too costly to purchase.

If you failed to create recovery discs, order them from Toshiba.
       Order Toshiba Recovery Media
For an explanation of all this, see the section Recovering the Internal Storage Drive, which begins on p. 54 of the User's Guide. See p. 68 for how to restore from the recovery media.

Restoring the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media will replace the partition with the image of the hard disk and should fix the WiFi.

Did you create recovery disks when you got the computer, if yes use them.  If not, and if you live in the USA/Canada, call HP at this number 1-800-334-5144, and see if you can still get a set of recovery disks.  Otherwise the WorldWide site:

  • Need to re-install Windows, but I have no recovery partition or Windows DVD

    Dear Reader,
Recently Windows got broken on my Toshiba Satellite L650-170.
I have tried to use my back-up, but the back-up utility refused my back-ups.
After some research the disk appears to be healthy, however all partitions on the disk seem to be damaged somehow.
So I am without both a Windows Disk nor Recovery Partition.
How can I get Windows back on my notebook using the windows key attached to it?
(A friend told me that using another windows 7 disk wont work)
    Kind Regards,
    Peter

    Hi Peter
If you dont have access to original recovery partition the question is: what do you want to have installed on your notebook?
If you want to have factory settings again you must install OS using original Toshiba recovery disc. You can order it on http://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx
If you want to have own OS installation you can use original Microsoft disc with valid license code. Product key at the bottom of your notebook cannot be used for activation.
If you have more questions you are welcome.

  • Lion Clean Install - No Disc Required - Recovery Partition Solution

There is a way to run a Lion clean install without unpacking the installation onto a new disc or thumb drive.  It can be accomplished via a slightly longer, two-step upgrade process, which requires wiping your hard drive after you've upgraded to Lion.  You must be able to connect to the internet for this option to work, as it will require downloading the install package again.
As always, be sure to back up your data before performing any sort of wipe of your hard drive.
    STEP 1 - Initial Upgrade
Perform a normal Lion upgrade through the App Store.  This will install Lion on top of your current configuration.  It will also create a Recovery Partition, which is a new feature of the Lion OS.  It is this Recovery Partition that you will use to perform the clean install.
STEP 2 - Wipe and Clean Install
Restart your computer into Recovery mode.  This can be done by either holding down CMD-r during boot up, or holding down the Option key during bootup and selecting to boot from the Recovery partition.
Select the Disk Utility option from the main menu.  Here you can select the main partition, click on the Erase tab at the top, and completely erase the partition.  Once you've done this, quit Disk Utility Option, and you will return to the main menu.
Select the Lion Installation option.  It will ask you to connect to the internet if you have not done so already (if wireless, you can do this via the Wi-Fi icon in the top right corner).  It will also ask you to input your Apple ID login and password in order to verify that you've already purchased the software.  The installation will take as long as it requires to download the package again.  Once downloaded and installed, Lion will walk you through initial set up.
This solution worked for me, but I make no guarantees that it will work for others.

I've created a boot disk (several actually) following the methods outlined in this guide.
    http://www.eggfreckles.net/tech/burning-a-lion-boot-disc/
I've also saved the installer dmg in several backup locations so it can be burned again fresh or transfered to bootable USB thumb drives.
The Lion install disk boots up and operates just like the Recovery Partition (Disk Utiltiy and all) with one giant benefit, you don't have to log into the MacAppStore with all it's complications or require a lenghtly internet download to install Lion.
So you won't see this annoying screen and have to wait a few hours if the servers are overloaded.
The boot disk also installs considerably faster. Two giant benefits actually.
Also  once Lion is installed, Bootcamp can be used to partition the drive, then the Recovery Partiton > Disk Utiltiy used to change the BOOTCAMP partition to HFS+ journaled and then 10.6 can be installed or cloned from a external drive onto the BOOTCAMP partition.
Dual boot Snow/Lion is possible with a large enough boot drive.

  • How to restore the HDD Recovery partition which has been deleted?

    Hello,
due to the mistake, I removed HDD Recovery partition.
Then, now I'm unable to restore eg. system state from before a fe hours.
Is there any way to "make" HDRecovery once again?
I really liked the funcionality of this tool, so it'd be nice but - can this be done? And how?

Andrej is right you cannot do this.
When you use Toshiba recovery media and install Vista this option will be available again.

  • Time machine restore destroys the recovery partition

    Hi
I wanted to restore my Lion installation with a Time Machine backup. So I restarted the computer with cmd+r and choose Time Machine restore.
After the restore everything works except FileVault. I can't enable it and when I try I get the error message "Can't enable because recovery partition is not available.".
How can I fix this? The restore from Time Machine works perfect and all files are at my computer but I can't use FileVault. And when I try to reboot with cmd+r so will it get the rescue information from the internet instead of the disk. So I'm thinking that the fault is that Time Machine deletes the rescue partition or disables it in the restore.
How can I restore from Time Machine and later use FileVault?

Reinstalling Lion worked. First restore and later reinstall... maybe not as good as advertised but it works.
Pondini I'm evaluating TM as backup software so there was nothing wrong with the installation just I wanted to test to make a restore so the day when it doesn't work I know what can be done.
Sadly I'm not that impressed about Apples Time Machine at the moment.

  • Windows 10 clean install - Delete Recovery Partition

Hi, I upgraded my Yoga 2 to Windows 10 last week. Unfortunaltely, I am experiencing some issues. Sometimes I cannot see any differences between the buttons of the Quck Settings (former Charm Bar). All buttons have the same color whether they are activated or not. The Start Bar does not work probably either. Most of the time I cannot delete or add icons. I delte them but they do not disappear. I have to restart Windows to do this.I though about doint a clean new install using an USB drive and an external Keyboard with Touchpad via an USB hub. I already created the USB drive and it is recognized from the BIOS. As my battery was not fully charged I waited with the actual installation. My question is if I could delete the recovery partition while doing the clean install to have more space on the SSD? There was a partition manager in Windows 7 but I am not sure whether or not there is any in Windows 10?Should I copy the current recovery partition first? This should be the original Windows 8.1 Recovery or did Windows 10 overwrite it with the upgrade? Thanks for your help!

    UPDATE 4 SOLUTION:
Somehow everything started to work on its own, maybe there was some kind of download on the background of windows, and before formating to windows 8 back, I decided to restart windows few times, and everything got fixed.
Thats my strange solution..... At least its working
So I suggest you to do every possible update on windows and 10 do few restarts, there are some background updates that we can't track probably, so let them settle and restart pc.

  • Windows 8 Reset, Lenovo OneKey Recovery, Partitions - confusion

    Hi everyone,
    I have a few questions - I have a Yoga 2 Pro:
    1. I created a separate partition for my documents on the hard drive. If I use Lenovo OneKey Recovery will that destroy the partition?
    2. Following Question 1, will the OneKey Recovery run successfully given the existence of said partition?
    3. I assume that the OneKey Recovery image on the hard drive provided by Lenovo includes all their software (OneKey Recovery, Energy Manager, EasyCamera, etc). If I use the Windows 8 Reset feature will that software still be installed or will it be a completely clean OS - as if, for example, I were to acquire a windows 8 ISO and use that for installation?
    4. Where the heck is my Windows 8 Product Key?
    Thanks in advance,
    - ice

    Great
Is there any way I can fix this? Without having to spend $?
EDIT: The other thing I should mention is that I used Windows itself to create this new partition. DISKPART gives the following:
