Windows XP SP3 & Adobe Reader X or XI protected mode

Using Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Adobe Reader X or XI our non-admin users receive the message "an internal error occurred." Assigning them admin rights  allows them ot open the reader software so they can turn off protected mode then we can remove the admin rights and they will be able to open the reader software.  Our new users are still not be able to open the reader and the ones that can are not protected.  What do you suggest as a solution to this issue?

Hi,
Can you please let me know the following:
1) Are admin users able to open the PDF file with "Protected Mode " as "ON".
2) rights withy the non-admin users.
3) Locations/ folders from where PDF file cannot be opened or isa it happening for any location on the user's machine.
4) Is any special configuration involved like users are roaming standard users, Citrix users or are they simple domain standard users accessing a WinXP machine on the network.
5) Is the issue observed on Win7 as well (If possible to test, please verify)
6) Antivirus/ Encryption softwares installed on users machine.
Thanks,
Shakti K

  • Adobe Reader cannot open in Protected Mode

I apologize if this is listed in the wrong category.
Recently, all users on our server started receiving a message: "Adobe Reader cannot open in Protected Mode due to an incompatibility with your system configuration. Would you like to open Adobe Reader with Protected mode disabled?" The users are presented with 3 options:
    Open with Protected Mode disabled
Always open with Protected Mode disabled
Do not open with Protected Mode disabled.
All the users can click "Open with Protected Mode disabled" and the PDF opens fine. I know that I can disable Protected Mode but I would rather not have to disable a security feature.
I have read this link: http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/protected-mode-troubleshooting-reader.html and none of the provided solutions seem to apply to us. I have tried a rebooting the server and uninstalling/reinstalling Adobe. Neither of these options worked. There is not an antivirus currently running on this server. We are not using Smart Cards. I have checked the Security permissions and they seem to be fine. I can not think of any recent changes to this server, but it has run just fine for years now.
    OS is Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
    Acrobat Version is 11.0.10
Is anyone aware of anything else that could cause this message? Thanks

    Thanks for the reply.
That option is not there on my version though. I am using version 11.0.10

  • Adobe reader cannot open in protected mode due to an incompatibility with your system configuration.

I keep getting the error message: Adobe reader cannot open in protected mode due to an incompatibility with your system configuration.
I have Windows 7 Home basic Service pack 1 and have already uninstalled and re-downloaded Adobe reader XI twice. I have also read other threads on this forum, and
tried the suggestions, including running Kaspersky anti-rootkit, no threats were found.
My Adobe reader shortcut icon shows a small blue and yellow shield in the bottom right (I uninstalled Windows essential protection), but the problem prevails.
I would rather get to the root of the error and fix it and not just disable protection mode!
    Please help.

    Hi,
Please refer to the solution in:- Error: “Acrobat Failed to Load core DLL”.
Also, may want to try disabling all Non-Microsoft Startup Services.

  • Issue with latest Adobe Reader 11.0.10 - Adobe Reader cannot open in Protected Mode due to incompatibility with your system configuration.

Since updating to the most recent Adobe Reader v11.0.10, getting an Adobe Reader Protected Mode: Adobe Reader cannot open in Protected Mode due do an incompatibility with your system configuration.  Would you like to open Adobe Reader with Protected Mode disabled?

The solution I was looking for was to launch Adobe Reader in Protected Mode.
I could not identify issues preventing Protected Mode from starting.  What ended up working, was to do a complete uninstall, followed by a reinstall.  Now we can load Reader in Protected Mode.

  • Unable to launch Adobe Reader using ShellExecute with Protected Mode on

    HI
Using the latest Adobe Reader 11.0.9, I open a PDF via ShellExecute in a legacy 32bit application, I get an unsupported configuration dialog and prompt to open with Protected Mode disabled always, once or don't open.
I need it to open with Protected Mode enabled.
The folder is in the Security (Enhanced) Privileged Locations.
I turned Protected Mode logging on and I see these messages when I call ShellExecute:
    [12:02/18:17:12] interceptions setup failed - error:0x0
    [12:02/18:17:12] Failed to add target - error:0x0
[12:02/18:17:12] Failed to launch sandbox process. ResultCode: 1 error:0x5A4
    [12:02/18:17:12] Sandbox Process Initialization Failed - error:0x5A4
I've read the Unsupported Configurations section of the Protected Mode Troubleshooting guide but nothing matches my system as far as I can tell.
I am running the 32bit legacy application in Windows Server 2008 R2 (64bit) as a member of Domain Administrators
What can you suggest is the unsupported configuration?
    Thanks
    Craig

I've tried another PDF viewer and it works fine so I think it's time to say goodbye to Adobe Reader.

  • Adobe Reader XI, AppData Redirection & Protected Mode = Slow Performance

I'd really appreciate any useful information that might allow the use of protected mode, but with reasonably good performance in the following scenario:
    Environment:
    - Windows 7 desktops with Adobe Reader XI
    - AppData is redirected to users' home folders
    - Desktops (5 - 10  in most cases) across a ~10 Mbps MPLS link from server hosting fome folder and the PDF docs being accessed.
    - Protected Mode Enabled (as recommended)
    Symptom:
    - It takes an inordinate amount of time (20 - 30 seconds) to open a tiny (100KB file) from a remote file server.  By comparison an Excel spreadsheet of similar size opens in 2 - 3 Seconds.
Temporary Workarounds (either results in SUBSTANTIALLY better (and acceptable) performance):
    - Disable Protected Mode (for obvious reasons, we'd like to have this feature enabled)
    - Disable Appdata redirection (for many other reasons, Appdata redirection makes sense for our environment)
    Other notes:
A network trace shows a large amount of SMB/CIFS traffic (5000 - 6000 packets) to/from the AppData folder when appdata is redirected to the users' home folders.
One thought I had was whether or not there is a means to direct an app to use AppData\Local instead of Appdata\Roaming, or if there is a means to direct Adobe reader to use an entirely different (and local to the OS) folder for whatever it needs appdata for when in protected Mode.
Any suggestions that don't include the workarounds already described are welcome.  Thanks!

Protected Mode sounds like a good idea, but it causes so many different problems that even some Adobe support staff regularly recommend to disable it.  I am sure that I myself have recommended that a couple of hundred times here in the Reader forum.  Why have a security option that disables normal functions like opening documents or printing them...?

  • Adobe reader cannot open in protected mode due to an incompatability with your system configuration.

How do I remove this and get the progam working again?

I wasn't sure how to reply back through the website.  I am using Adobe
Reader XI.  The message thay I get when I try to open the progrqm is
Acrobat failed to load its core DLL and my operating system is Windows 7
Home Premium.  The program used to work, then, all of sudden stopped.

  • Adobe Reader 10.0.1 Protected Mode investigation

In my testing of AR X on Windows 7, I noted the Protected Mode error that has been posted in these forums many times before.
Notably, the problem did not show when logged in user a local admin account but did occur with a network admin account.
I found that changing all network references in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders to local references, stopped the protected mode error from appearing when logged in as a network admin.
So, in our case at least, the Protected Mode error appears to arise whenever the user shell folders are redirected to a network share.
Hopefully this may help others trying to get this software working.

  • Adobe Reader cannot open in Protected Mode due to a problem with your system configuration.

From Adobe website:  "Note that this list is not regularly maintained as Protected Mode now runs transparently in the background and it is unlikely that users will experience issues."
This explanation on the Adobe website does not explain what the problem is with the "system configuration".  What is the system configuration problem?

    Hi Steve,
As mentioned on the troubleshooting page as well normally application like antiviruses, encryption and system maintenance tools causes this kind of problem. These software software intercepts some system calls for the Reader sandbox. Could you please check if you have any of these kind of software installed? Could you please answer following question then I would be in better position to help you?
    1. Version of Reader being used
    2. OS
    3. What happens if you choose launch unprotected? Do you see a failure or Reader launches?
    Thanks

  • Cannot read a file using Acrobat SDK in Adobe Reader 11 when Enable Protected Mode is checked

I wrote a plugin using Acrobat SDK which reads a temporary file created by another program in TEMP folder. In Adobe 10, plugin can read the temporary file and everything works. In Adobe Reader 11, plugin fails to read the temporary file when Enable Protected Mode option is checked. When I uncheck this option, everything works fine. Our customers are concerned about disabling this option. Please let me know if there is a workaround for this issue without unchecking the option. Thank you.

    Thank you! That worked!

  • System configuration will not allow reader to open in Protected Mode?

Suddenly system configuration will not allow Adobe Reader to open in Protected Mode. What do I reset?

I just don't know exactly what I am looking for.
If you only have one trace it helps to have a hypothesis to test.  Otherwise if you have two which are essentially the same except for one significant difference, as I mentioned you should be able to filter coarsely, spot a divergence and then investigate
the cause of it.  In a general scenario I imagine you would only have Process & Thread as a coarse filter, e.g. see the dispatching of tasks and threads and the loading of their modules.  However, for your case, it may be sufficient to compare
Network events, spot a divergence in that sequence and then dive in to see what more differences there were which caused it.
    Good luck

With computer running Windows 7 using the curser can select an item, then right click and select copy.   With computer running Windows 8 there is a hand instead of a curser therefore unable to select an item, therefore unable to copy.  Is there a way to have a curser rather than the hand?
Eureka!!!   Just found by right clicking on the hand can then select “Select Tool” and then copy.  Hurray!!!

    can you help me plz?

    Hi,
You have to remove the back hand file which was present in the Local Disk C >> Program Data >> Acrobat, if you remove this file. It will remove the SSH (Software System History) from the PC. Then you can efficiently reinstall the Adobe Acrobat XI
