Windows XP SP3 removal and Bootcamp 2.1 update?

Having already installed the XP SP3 on my Macbook Pro, is it possible to uninstall it or restore XP before the SP3 installation and then go with the Bootcamp 2.1 upgrade? After this install SP3 again? Anyone with suggestion?
Thanks

no I got it going eventually.. the problem was i was impatient.. apparently even an hour of waiting with no response doesn't mean a hang.. If you'll just leave it overnight it will move on to the next step..
A google search shows that i'm not the only one fooled by this.. at 33 minutes to go... there are various postings by people who assumed a hang after a long period of nothing happening..
Anyway all happy now.. Thought i'd let people know if they have this issue.
1/ you CAN install XP SP3 with bootcamp 2.0. The pdf guide on the site and the install guide you print out from bootcamp assistant both say twice that you can install XP SP2 or later.. The confusion comes with UPDATES form SP2 to SP3.. It appears to do this you need to first install the Bootcamp 2.1 update in windows.
2/When installing Windows, if you get a very long period of no feedback back to you and you assume the install has hanged, if the green progress indicators are still moving it is still working, but it may take HOURS..
Hope this helps someone else..

  • After installing Windows XP SP3, iTunes and Quicktime crash at startup

I use iTunes almost every day, and until now have had almost no problems. But as of Sunday afternoon 5/11/2008, I found iTunes crashed on startup. Soyon after, I discovered Quicktime had the same problem. For both apps, I tried rebooting, upgrading, uninstalling/reinstalling, running Norton 2008 virus scan and registry cleaner. Same problem no matter what I did.
I just noticed, though, that my Windows Update (which I have naively set to automatic) history shows that, on that same day, it automatically installed Windows XP SP3. Coincidence... hmm.
So while I patiently wait for the uninstaller to complete the removal of SP3, I'm wondering if anyone else has had similar problems.

Great link, thanks for posting it. I followed the advice therein, but unfortunately it didn't help. For the record, here's what I've done recently:
    0) Removed SP3.
    1) Removed all of the following:
    Apple Mobile Device Support
    Apple Airport Express
    Apple Software Update
    Bonjour
    Quicktime
    iTunes
    2) Deleted all remaining folders related to the above apps from c:\Program Files.
    3) Ran Norton 360 (2008) registry cleanup.
    4) Ran Norton 360 (2008) virus scan (nothing found).
    5) Deleted the following folders (Angela is the user account):
    c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple
    c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple Computer
    c:\Documents and Settings\Angela\Application Data\Apple
    c:\Documents and Settings\Angela\Application Data\Apple Computer
    c:\Documents and Settings\Angela\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple
    c:\Documents and Settings\Angela\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer
    6) Rebooted.
    7) Downloaded and installed iTunes 7.6.2.
    8) Rebooted (just coz I love rebooting).
    9) Tried to execute iTunes, get error dialog: "QuickTime Player has encoutered a problem and needs to close."
    10) Tried to execute QuickTime, get same dialog.
At this point I'm thinking I've got a bad DLL under c:\Windows...

  • Install windows 7 via usb and bootcamp

Okay guys, its been 5 days now going thru this MESS!
    -I own a MacBookPro Early 2011  (MacBookPro8,1)
after now 3 years my superdrive is broken...not able to read CDs any more.
I try to get Windows 7 on this piece of computer, but Bootcamp only offered my to install via CD
-After days of searching I did the following:
.I edited info.plist of bootcamp to enable the bootcamp option of a usb stick installation.
.I created a WININSTALL usb stick with bootcamp. Bootcamp restarts and show:
no bootable device found. pls insert cd and press any key
after an other da of searching i found out to use gparted to format the usb into a fat32 format and then copied to this usb the files of WINISTALL usb stick
then i rebooted --- no device found---rebooted again pressing alt -----i was able to select the wininstall usb---and it opens gparted setup window -.-
seriously guys, what is this???? does it needs to be so complicated to just install windows 7 without a cd drive ( which is **** getting broken so fast!!)
Now I really have no clue how to continue, maybe sell this macbook and just buy a windows ? Definitly last time I owned an mac anyways

cool to get any feedback too...

  • Windows 7 OEM parallels and Bootcamp, installation sequence?

So ive got a 2013 macbook air and planning on using the OEM licence to firstly create a bootcamp partition, and the having parallels run off the bootcamp partition. Now I understand I might have to go through the whole phone activation the second time. My question is ...what sequence should I use to activate.Should I activate parallels first after the installation of parallel tools or can I just activate bootcamp first????

    Karim.Foad wrote:
Ok wow that's cleared a lot up ....I've been researching this for the last few days , and getting mixed views with some saying windows will count the virtual machine as a separate computer and they have all sorts if activation problems .But for the second activation , in parallels , the long digit phone activation should be sufficient ?? Because I really don't look forward to explaining everything to a Microsoft Representative
    Over the phon haha!
This is why I originally suggested that you read the activation directions on the Parallels and Fusion sites. They address the issue of Windows thinking that the VM installation is a second installation of Windows when in fact it is not. This is because you are not installing Windows in Parallels you are only pointing to your single Bootcamp installation of Windows. This is an issue that has been addressed by the VM manufacturers.

  • SPS224 and Windows XP SP3 802.1x supplicant problem

    Hi everybody
We run MS Active Directory based network (Windows Server 2008, MS NPS as RADIUS server) and have Windows XP SP3 and 7 in it. We have a lot of SPS224 (with the latest SW version 1.0.6) as the access switches, and we are trying to implement 802.1x in our network to authenticate users by their AD domain computer accounts. Also, we want to use dynamic VLAN assignment using RADIUS attributes. The authentication by PEAP-MSCHAPv2 works fine on all workstations but we have a problem with the dynamic VLAN assignment in case Windows XP machines are used. The problem is that after a successful authentication and VLAN assignment on a switch port, the Windows XP supplicant is trying to re-authenticate after several seconds. However, the switch port state remains authorized and the workstation does not lose connection. So, the only problem we see is that the state of supplicant does not correspond the switch port state. We have notice that the problem occurs when the "multiple sessions mode" is used (it is needed to enable VLAN  assignment by RADIUS attributes). We have tried the built-in Windows XP SP3 supplicant and Cisco Secure Services Client with the similar result. At the same time, the Windows 7 workstation works just fine, without any problems. Is anybody has faced this problem with Windows XP and has a workaround? Any help will be appreciated!

Not exactly sure what could be the problem. It should be working - it's definitely supported (I'm currently typing this via a XP SP3 machine using PEAP WPA2/AES via WZC). The only things I can think of to check are:
    - Make sure your wireless drivers are up to date *this is a must*
    - Make sure the other supplicant is completely disabled (uninstall it if you really need to rule it out)
    - Try disabling the server certificate check in the WZC profile for this network (do you know for sure that your laptop trusts the IAS server's certificate)?
    - Are you doing machine or user authentication for PEAP - make sure you have the WZC profile properly configured
    - Are you 100% sure that you've configured everything properly for the network (WPA vs WPA2? AES vs. TKIP? etc.)

  • After updating to Firefox 15 on my Vista machine Firefox will not open. I have removed and reinstalled it but still won't open. How do I fix this?

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium and after doing the update for Firefox 15, firefox won't start. I get no error messages or anything it just won't start. I removed Firefox and reinstalled but that didn't help.
    What is next to try?

    Hi lwhealon
try from Start > Run > and type to check 1 of :
    firefox -safe-mode
    "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -safe-mode '''or'''
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -safe-mode
(to enable the Run box in win 7 see: [http://blogs.msdn.com/b/tims/archive/2006/09/18/windows-vista-secret-3-bringing-back-start-run.aspx enable Run box win 7] )
also check if [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firewalls Firewall] or/and other security software blocking firefox start (like ad-blocker, web-accelerator etc).
[http://kb.mozillazine.org/Kill_application With Firefox completely closed] (probably because you can not start it), open the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installation_directory application folder] (by default, C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox on Windows) rename firefox.exe to firefox1.exe, then double-click firefox1.exe. If Firefox runs without problems, it could indicate that your firewall is blocking Firefox.
    good luck

  • Windows XP SP3 Migration

Dear Sir! I am a old Windows XP SP3 user. and now i want to use Windows 8.1 so can i or can i not, Migration Windows XP SP3 to Windows 8.1?? in my MCSA Windows 8.1 Class my instructor have told me that we can (Under Supported Windows 8.1 Upgrade
Paths) Migration to Windows 8.1 from Windows XP SP3. please help me out here!
i'm getting this message when i try to install Windows 8.1
(the procedure entry point __CxxFrameHandler3 could now be located in the dynamic library msvcrt.dll)

    Hi,
Migrating from Windows XP to Windows 8.1 can really be achieved. You should use
the User State Migration Tool (USMT) 5.0, it’s a scriptable command-line tool that provides a highly-customizable user-profile migration experience.
During migration, you should do these things:
    1. Install the USMT.
    2. Run ScanState to Create a Migration Store on the Server.
    3. Install Windows 8.1.
    4. Apply Data Using the LoadState Tool.

I just tried to reinstall the SUP on the Primary site(only one SUP on Primary site and there is a SUP on Secondary site). The SUP upstream data source of the Secondary site showed empty and greyed out. But the upstream data source resumed after a while.
It seems nothing special needs to be done.

  • Bootcamp and Windows XP SP3

Ok, here goes.  I have a Macbook Pro OS=10.6.8, 2.53gHz Intel Core Duo, 4gb, 1067mHz DDR3.  I am...or was, I should say, running Windows XP SP2++ beautifully (as marginally beautiful as Windows is) using VMware Fusion 3.1.3 thru Bootcamp.  I bought TurboTax for Business 1120 filers (no Mac version avail).  This requires Windows XP SP3.  No problem, if XP SP2 runs well, so should SP3 - NOPE!
After SP3 finished updating, I did the standard shut down and reboot.  The Bootcamp window came up like it normally does with the cheesy Windows icon as is was bringing up Windows.  Then, suddenly, I get the dreaded blue screen error (anyone that has suffered thru windows has experienced this). I tried completely shutting down the Mac and then restarting, but got the same error.  I have attached a picture of the error message:

no I got it going eventually.. the problem was i was impatient.. apparently even an hour of waiting with no response doesn't mean a hang.. If you'll just leave it overnight it will move on to the next step..

i recently tried to remove widows7 on my macbook air using bootcamp and halfway through it grayed out .The windows 7 is removed but i cant free up the 62gig partition the windows was occupying on my 121gig ssd harddrive please help

You may have to see about using the Recovery HD partition to attempt to erase and restore useful function of the capacity lost to the former Windows installation.
And you may have to backup your contents outside the computer to do it. Disk Utility on the Mac OS X historically has not been able to touch a BootCamp created partition; so if BootCamp cannot remove it, then you have to see how to do the equivalent of a reformat of the entire drive (less Recovery partition?) then reinstall your OS X. Maybe from internet recovery, then get your applications, etc from the Mac App store, etc.
A complete system clone of your OS X on an external HDD would be another method to restore after reformat, of the portion you want whole again, not necessarily the space where Recovery may live.
    There may be (an)other way(s).
    Perhaps someone with recent experience
in this matter can reply & discuss options.
With my antiques, they almost know what I want before I tell them.
Hopefully yours will after you talk to it awhile.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Removing and re-installing bootcamp...damage hard drive?

    Hi.
A few days after I got my Macbook, I installed Bootcamp and Windows XP Home on it. After realizing i didn't have much use for it, at the time, I removed the partition using the Bootcamp assistant. I recently re-installed Bootcamp on my Macbook, to try out some of the features again. Today I installed a program called VMware Fusion Beta, which is a virtual machine similar to Parallels. I figured, "Hey, it's free, it uses the already installed Bootcamp partition, what do I have to lose?" Well, it turns out that the VMware Fusion removed the Bootcamp partition itself, and moved it to it's system files, so now I can no longer boot with Windows XP.
The icing on the cake is that my product key for Windows XP came with another computer I had purchased, and much to my amazment, it worked when I installed through Bootcamp. Beacuse VMware Fusion allocates a certain amount of RAM, Windows is detecting a major hardware change and requesting that I reinstall. However, my product key no longer works, as Windows is saying that my product key has been used too many times already.
My question is this: If I were to uninstall VMware Fusion and re-partition my hard drive with Bootcamp, will my product key likely work again?
But moreso: Does repeatedly partitioning your hard drive and erasing and repartitioning do any serious long-term damage to the drive? I know with Windows that would create fragments, but I have heard that fragmentation is a non-issue with Macs.
    Any thoughts on this?
    Thanks very much in advance,
    Jason

"But moreso: Does repeatedly partitioning your hard drive and erasing and repartitioning do any serious long-term damage to the drive? I know with Windows that would create fragments, but I have heard that fragmentation is a non-issue with Macs."
Actually... erasing and repartitioning your hard drive (with Windows or otherwise) gets rid of any fragmentation you may have. Fragmentation is a result of the way the filesystem on the computer works. I won't go in to much detail... but for various reasons, bits and pieces of files can end up being spread all over your hard drive. When this happens, in order to read those files, your hard drive head has to skip all around to pick up the little bits instead of having them in one nice place. All that extra jumping around can add up to lots of time on a very fragmented drive. The more deleting and writing of files you do, you more fragmentation you get. So, in effect, when you partition a drive you are wiping all of the data and starting fresh. Partitioning your drive and erasing and repartitioning is basically just writing data to your drive. In fact, if you do a quick format in Windows, it doesn't even do all that much writing... it just tells the system that the data in that space can be overwritten. So... to cut an already long story short, you won't hurt your drive. You're only having it do what it will literally do billions of times in it's lifetime... just read and write.
