Windows XP, SP3: 'Skype has encountered a problem ...

I have seen quite a few people have this issue on here, but despite countless forum searches and multiple uninstalls/re-installs, I have not been able to fix my problem.
I have not had any issues will Skype on my other computer. But I have recently gotten a WiFi adapter for the Windows XP in my room, and decided to download Skype on here as well. I have tried various downloads from Skype, earlier versions of Skype, and deleting .xml files as well as updating and restarting my computer. My install seems to go smoothly, but once I click on Skype or its shortcut icon, a blank Skype window opens up, quickly followed by an error message like displayed in the title. I have sent a few error reports, but that doesn't really move toward fixing my problem.
If someone could help me reach a solution soon, that would be greatly appreciated. Here is some of my computer information below:
System:
Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 3
Computer:
Intel(R)
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80 GHz
2.79 GHz, 1.25 GB of RAM
IE:
Version 8.0.6001.18702
Error Info:
AppName: skype.exe
AppVer: 6.13.0.104
ModName: mlang.dll
ModVer: 6.0.2900.5512
Offset: 00017ad2
I have attached the extra file that was attached to the error report. Please let me know of any other information you may need to help with my dilemma. I have spent most of my day attempting to fix this problem to no avail, and would really appreciate any help. Thank you.

So the Microsoft support site tells me that mlang.dll errors occur when 'you have a damaged TrueType font or if the Mlang.dll file is not registered properly.' So I start to follow the instructions, but then it tells me to 'Place your Windows CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive'.
This computer was given to me from a friend; I don't have the Windows CD. Is there any way I can fix my problem without it?
EDIT: FIXED!
After running Command Prompt, all of my windows started displaying strange symbols instead of text. I recently (for gaming purposes) had to change the language settings on my computer to Japanese, so in an attempt to fix the problem, I opened up my Control Panel, went to Regional and Language Options, and changed both my Regional Options and my Advanced settings to English, and restarted my computer. Skype now works fine! Thank you for your help!

Problem Statement: Skype working fine. Then two days ago, I opened the skype program and this time it immediateley began an automatic update (nothing unusual,, has been doing this for years) Upon installation of the update (presumably for ver 7.6) I received a dialog box message "Skype update has encountered a problem and has to close"...... you know the drill...send error report to microsoft, etc.I then tried to reopen skype, but no skype window opened, Instead another error dialogue box "Skype has encountered a problem, yada, yada, yada send error report to microsoft"After consulting the support pages, did a COMPLETE uninstall/reinstall of ver 7.6 Evidently the install went fine (or did it ?) Skype is in my program files folder, the desktop icon is in place, but again, when I double click to open skype, the  dialoge error message appears instead,, as before, "Skype has encounteed a problem...send erreor report to microsoft" Of course, using XP, SP 3  1.2 Ghz processor, 512 MB RAM, IE 8.0 which meets min requirements for skype. Considered other posts here suggesting to retro back to a previous version, but with auto-updates, how long will that last ? (can they be disabled ?)To sum up, 7. 6 auto update installation started the problem, and nothing  I've tried seems to solve the problem.  P.S.  I installed a Netgear wireless USB adapter and corresponding driver between the date of the last successful Skype auto update, and the time the current issue occurred. Skype had worked fine with the wireless connection before the 7.6 update. But I wouldn't think there would be a connectivity problem, as Skype simply refuses to open. Or maybe I'm wrong. As of now I am clueless and skypeless.

  • Windows Home XP - "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close"

    Hello :
I just updated to iTunes 7.7.0.43 for Windows Home XP. The earlier version was working just fine. But last week I downloaded the update and although the program works fine, every time that I exit from this application I get an error message "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close." I went to the support site and did several things including creating a new ueer account to test whether user or system-specific (I cannot tell); re-installing the application; re-creating my library and play-lists; etc. But I still get the same error message. Otherwise the application works fine, plays music, imports music OK, etc. This condition only occurs a few seconds after I exit from the application. Can anybody out there help me ? I am at my wit's end with this annoyance ! Thanks.

Whether or not this will be fixed by a software update depends on what the root cause of the issue is. I would recommend trying MSCONFIG, although I can understand your reluctance to do so. Is your computer currently in Normal startup mode? If so, and if Apple's MSCONFIG steps do not resolve your issue, you can easily revert to Normal startup using the utility. If your computer is currently in Selective startup mode, just make note of the changes you make so you can change them back after you determine whether MSCONFIG resolved the issue. If it does, I'd suggest using the utility to disable a few items at a time until you narrow down which is the cause of the issue. Then you can determine whether this is a startup item or service that you need to have running on your PC.
    MSCONFIG for XP: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1275
    MSCONFIG for Vista: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305415
You may also want to check and see if iTunes and/or QuickTime are running in compatibility mode. If the are, turn this option off and retry iTunes.
    -Go to C:\Program Files\iTunes\
Right-click on iTunes.exe and click Properties
    Click the Compatibility tab
Uncheck the option to run in compatibility mode
    Click Ok
    -Go to C:\Program Files\QuickTime\
Right-cick on QuickTime.exe and click Properties
    Click the Compatibility tab
Uncheck the option to run in compatibility mode
    Click Ok
    Test iTunes again.

  • Cannot open Skype - "has encountered a problem and...

    Hi all,
I haven't used Skype in a few months, and just tried opening it - it crashed immediately.  I completely uninstalled it, downloaded the latest version and installed that, and rebooted my pc.  It first opened and said it was updating, then crashed.  Since then, it cannot open at all - as soon as I clock on the desktop icon, it says it encountered and error and needs to close.
I am running Windows XP with Service pack 3 and all current updates, and downloaded the current directX.  Not sure what could be causing the problem?  I'm ready to try uninstalling again and installing a much older version, but don't know if that will work either...

Please,  run the DirectX diagnostics tool.
Go to Windows Start and in the Run box type dxdiag.exe and press the OK button. This will start the DirectX diagnostics program. Run this diagnostics and save the results to a file. Please, attach this file to your post.
Be aware that you will have to zip this file before attaching it here.

  • "itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close" - while importing

While importing a CD i get an error message halfway through and the burning stops. The windows message is: "itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close".
    I have tried to repair:
    1. remove Quicktime and repair itunes.
    2. updated windows, itunes, quicktime, updater.
    3. updated my dvd/cd driver.
    4. deleted all forms of itunes and quicktime and reinstalled.
    5. deselcted "use error correction" under preferences, advanced, importing.
It is not the burner as Windows Media imports the cd just fine.
Please help. It drives me crazy. ty.

    hi Jonathan!
This is only a temp solution...
there are a couple of ways of making this change semi-permanent (if the fix works for you). you would need to download and install a utility that starts up itunes with a single processor affinity set.
Otto discusses two in this thread (Runfirst, in the first post in the thread, and imagecfg in one of the last posts in the thread):
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=826742&ft=y&#826742
(although Otto is talking about a podcast crash in that thread, the same underlying cause of that crash also causes the importing crash.)

  • "Itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close" problem.

Before you read anything, please understand that I am literally being driven to tears right now and that I am on the brink of insanity.
On Saturday, I tried to update my iPod with new songs and apps that I got from the iTunes stores since Friday. Itunes would open but in the next 10 seconds following it, the error window that says "Itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close" etc. came up. I let it go for like two hours, thinking it was a small bug or something, and I ran a virus scan too, just to make sure (I just switched to AVG too on Saturday). Two hours later, iTunes STILL wouldn't work and by that time, I was about to become upset. I uninstalled and then reinstalled iTunes about 5 times that day. Now today, iTunes is still giving me the same problem. I know other users have faced similiar problems but someway or another, they found a way to fix it.
I have tried EVERYTHING to fix iTunes. I even did a Quicktimes and an iTunes run to get rid of any and all files associated with the two programs. When I finally thought the nightmare would end, I downloaded iTunes again. However, not only did it NOT work but now EVERY SINGLE ONE OF MY SONGS that I had in my library were GONE. No traces, nothing. Even the movies that I had on it had vanished. Everything single thing that I bought in the iTunes store disappeared. Now, at this point, I am now both incredibly frustrated, and crying my freaking eyes out now. (Understand that I am 15 years old and I grew up with music as my only solace.)
Somebody, just please help me through this ****. All I wanted was to just update my iPod so I could listen to it in school, and now my music is gone, along with a dead iPod. -_-

I found my solution! In case you're still having trouble, here's what I did (please pardon the odd grammar, I copy-and-pasted this from another one of my questions!):
And for those of you who are still experiencing this problem, this is what I did. Although I don't know your details and your own specific problems, I hope this can be at least a helpful guide. (The solution was incredibly simple and easy that I am extremely mad at myself for deleting all of my files now...)
First, just for safety measures, run a virus scan and a malware scan (so you can get rid of those icky programs lurking in your computer). Once you're done with that, check to see if your computer has an update for you (those automatic updates you get that comes with every Windows computer). If you do, click on it and update your computer. Once it's done, restart your computer and VIOLA! Itunes is fixed, Quicktime is fixed, and Adobe Reader is fixed.
It's insane. I guess this just goes to show that even the simplest of things can fix such a mind-boggling problem! Before you take extreme and drastic measures, follow through with the simplest of solutions first!

  • I get an error message when trying to install windows 7 on my macbook pro. The message says "windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer. I don't have anything connected to my computer. How do I fix this?

I'm trying to install windows 7 on my macbook pro. I went through the process of bootcamp telling it to install windows 7. Once the windows boot manager started an error message came up. The error message says " windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer. I don't have a usb connected to my computer. I  am using windows 7 professional install disc. I  can't figure out what i am doing wrong. The same message keeps coming up over and over. Am I doing something wrong or is it something else?

Well, shucks, i just spent almost 30 minutes trying to find your model user guide to explain it better, I guess they never got around to making it.....
I would just borrow another Windows disk and try installing it again and if it does it again then you might take it to an Apple Store and see if one of the "Genius' " can figure it out.
Make sure your internet is enabled and click on your blank desktop and at the top of your screen is a Help menu option, enter PRAM and it should give you a list of things relating to Pram. It may take a few seconds to list anything as it has to connect to Apples severs first. It should list the things you may have to fill back in when your done.
"P-ram" stores some common information that is used in the background, your date, time, startup disk, etc, that you don't have to re-fill when you restart, it's a little different for each computer.

  • Just purchased and installed photoshop and everytime i try to open it it says "windows has encountered a problem and must close the program" anyone else have this problem?

I have just purchased the photography package on my windows 8 computer and everytime I open photoshop an error message pops up saying that windows has encountered a problem and needs to close the program. I am really frustrated that this is happening after I purchased this plan and would like to be able to use the product I have purchased

    +1 to Chris' assessment.
Keep in mind that it's your responsibility to provide a problem-free working environment on your computer for Photoshop, and system software (such as display drivers) can have problems.
Look in your Windows Event Logs (specifically, your Application Log) for the info requested above on the specific crashes.

  • I have installed iTunes on my new windows 7 dell laptop every time I start it it comes up with an error saying itunes has encountered a problem and it closes ? any answers have tried command prompt reset and it has not resolved it also un/reinstalled

I have installed iTunes on my new laptop OS Windows 7. I have two iphones, a 3rd gen nano and an ipod classic.
Since the install yesterday I keep getting an error message which itunes has stopped working A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a soluion is available.
I have un and re installed and followed a command promt reset.
I still have the problem. Any ideas?

Ok. So I created a new account and iTunes did work. I went back into my original account and tried again and just to be more clear, after I open iTunes it asks me to accept or decline the agreement, I do that, then it says "updating library", and then one all the bars are full it closes and says "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close."
okay, let's start working through the user-account-specific causes of this message.
one possibility is damaged itunes preference files in the user account in which you're getting the crash. (there's a different set of those in each different user account, which is how we can get crashes limited to a single user account.)
if that is what is going on, we can often get past this by rebuilding the preference files in the account that is crashing. for the preference files rebuild technique, see my reply to kusma in this post:

Are you installing AIR installer or running Installer. If your running it make sure you click on the AIR Install package file, not just using installer. Im not really sure what you can do.
