Windows XP system boot failure with \Boot\BCD status 0xc000000f

I have a ThinkCenter M52 purchased secondhand from my employer. It was originally loaded with Vista but was upgraded to Windows XP before I got it. (The recovery partition on the HDD is still Vista.) For the 15 months since I bought I have had no problems. I had to reboot earlier this week because of a software upgrade and now I get:
File: \Boot\BCD
Status 0xc000000f
An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data
From Google searches this is a Vista error, somehow the XP configuration has been lost. I have tried using a partition manager, BOOTCFG from an XP install disc, BartPE. I have run out of ideas, how do I fix this?

Did you check your HDD for errors?Try using Lenovo's hard drive quick test

Plenty of articles on how to fix it. Just Google "fix error 0xc0000098" - there's also a youtube video. If you are in luck then:
Check if you are able to get the recovery options by pressing the key F8 on your computer.
    a. Restart your computer if it is powered on.
    b. Tap the F8 key after your computer initially powers on.
    c. Once you see the Advanced Boot Options menu you can stop tapping.
From the Advanced Boot options, check if you can get the System Recovery or repair option. This would take you to Windows recovery options. If you can get to the recovery options, you can rebuild BDC. Follow the below article:

  • All Windows I Install return boot\bcd error

    Have a l645d-s4040.
Im Lost now.. I've read many threads similar to my problem, or exactly like my problem. Ive tried it all, and done at least 12 Different installs. heres the info:
Bought it brand new, was unaware of making the restoration disks until it was too late.
I had a virus, so I did "clean all" in diskpart, at the cmd prompt. So i can start fresh. I have a retail version of Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, which was the original OS. went through the installation process fine, until the reboot where its supposed to go through the second step of the installation. on reboot i get a "bcd\boot" error. Ive tried repairing the MBR, the Boot record, ive tried using align=1024, ive tried using paragon, and acronis to fix the boot record. Ive tried using boot managers. Ive tried installing windows vista, ive tried windows 7 ultimate 64 and 32 bit versions.. the only OS i can get to install is XP.. Im at a loss
of course of done : Startup Repair (http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/681-startup-repair.html)
So after the first step of of installation, which goes fine then reboots to continue the installation i get:
    Windows Boot Manager
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
    1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
    2. Choose your language settings, and then click “Next.”
    3. Click “Repair your computer.”
If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.
    File: \Boot\BCD
    Status: 0xc000000f
Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configurations data.
    Enter= Continue ESC=Exit
so i reboot with the install cd. which i downloaded from www.mydigitallife.info/windows-7-iso-x86-and-x64-official-direct- download-links-ultimate-professional-and-home-premium/.
And ran the startup repair, first time no OS found and failed to save startup options.  rebooted and this time the repair worked and it booted fine running the 2nd step of the installation process.. on the reboot i got same boot\bcd error.. so i repeated the repair steps above.. it finally booted and finalized the installation.. i got to the desktop fine and installed all my drivers.  when i rebooted i got the same error.
    WHATS UP WITH THIS???

I would restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media, which you can obtain from Toshiba.

  • Laptop wont start - \Boot\BCD 0xc000000f

So I did a Windows update, then restarted and now this error appears. I also deselected "Enable tab groups" in Internet Options under tab settings. I dont know if this could affect it but thats all the changes I did since the last restart, I cant think of anything else except for Windows and McAfee updates. I have Vista 32, Satellite laptop, McAfee firewall. Does model matters? On the sticker there's A500 - 13F
This is what I get. I was already googling for this error but I cant find anything useful other than same questions.

I dont have this boot CD and no blank CDs or DVDs to burn on until I buy some tomorrow. I also dont have any installation disk, the OS was already installed and I dont remember getting any recovery disk with it (unless if I lost it). What can I do? Is using boot CD the only option?
Now I've tried F12 for Boot menu. I get 3 options, HDD1/SSD1, CD/DVD and LAN, but none of them work, I still get the same error screen. I've also tried with F8 after reading few posts with the same error, but I still end with the same error message. F2 is for Setup but I dont find anything useful. I also have HDD recovery on D partition on the current laptop and on the other one that has this error, can this fix it?

Hi! Has anyone that is replying on this thread created a system repair disc?? If you have boot with it and try each method to fix your problem.
    http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/how-to-use-a-system-repair-disc-to-restore-windows.html
If Windows 7 won't start or starts with significant problems, you may need to use the System Repair Disc to fix problems with Windows 7. The System Repair Disc is designed to let you boot up Windows — even if nothing else works — and provides you with several options for repairing your failing system.
You need to create the system repair disc. If you don’t create one, you limit your recovery options. The system repair disc is not the same thing as the recovery disc that came with your computer. It won’t reinstall Windows 7 and it won’t reformat your computer. It's simply a gateway to Windows' built-in recovery tools.

  • \Boot\BCD bootup error and possible need to recover extra D: partition files

I started up my 10-month old Toshiba Latitude P750-BT4G22 and plugged in an HDMI cable from my television before the bootup process had finished.   Oooops!   Suddenly, the computer died, and when I tried to restart it, I saw the following message:

My computer is set up with a virtual C: drive containing Windows and a virtual D: drive (partition) containing all of my important files that I would like to NOT lose.
Any idea how I might salvage this situation?  If I have to use recovery disks, can I ensure that the D: drive is not touched and will remain intact?  (Clearly I don't want to return to a factory state, because I reformatted the hard drive when I first received it and made the D: partition to store my important files.)

  • Windows 7 not booting. Says File:\Boot\BCD error

HI, I have purchased a HP Pavilion DMZ1 XL303AV laptop. I had got it serviced from a HP service centre as it had suffered water spillage. The service centre replaced the entire motherboard. Now, the laptop suddenly stopped working. It gives an error message: File : \Boot\BCD; Status 0xc00000e9 ; Info: AN unexpected I/O error has occured. It says if you receive this error, please contact hardware manufacturer.
I donot have a  Recovery CD for this model. HP did not provide. I donot remember creating a recovery USB drive for this (This model has no CD/DVD drive).
The machine is not working . Please help

Hi SyedAR, I am sorry to hear that you are getting this error on your computer. I would strongly suggest that you contact HP Total care at 1-800-474-6836 or at this link if the number is outside your calling area.  http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.html      From what I can see from this error, you are going to need the recovery disks for the Windows operating system and you can get them from HP Total care.  They will also be able to walk your through repairing your computer once you have the disks.
    Thank you for your time.

  • Boot\BCD error - SCCM 2012 R2

    Hi,
This is a last ditch attempt before I throw in the towel and rebuild the server.
I am running an SCCM 2012 R2 Hierarchy with two primaries and multiple distribution points.
One of our main DPs has started coming up with an error when pxe booting a windows 7 machine. This happened after a corrupt driver was added to the boot image. The driver was removed and all the DP's rolled back but the issue still remains on this server
alone. We use an IPhelper to point the pxe requests at this server.
    The error message is:
    File: \Boot\BCD
    Status: 0xc0000098
Info: The Windows Boot Configuration Data file does not contain a valid OS entry.
    I have tried the following:
    1. Removing the PXE role and reapplying it.
    2. Removing the Boot images and reapplying them.
    3. Removing the DP altogether from the console and reapplying.
    4. Removing all data from the DP and starting again.
    5. Redistributing the boot images. both x86 and x64
    6. creating a new boot image for both x86 and x64 and applying those.

    Hello,
Is your WDS running properly? If WDS is stopped, can you start it manually?
Or you get an error like 'The service did not respond in a timely fashion'?
The symptom is so similar to that I have encountered. You referred that you have tried to remove WDS, DP, but I wonder how. Before removing WDS and DP role, try to delete corrupt package in SCCMContentLib folder.
I just recreated SCCMContentLib, and WDS did start working. I guess there are corrupt packages in the my folder as well. But another problem occur, I installed all the roles on the same server in my lab, so it is a primary site server as well. As a result,
it seems that I have to re-deploy all the packages. Not sure if there is any further problem yet. Since it is just a lab environment, it doesn't matter for me.
I hope what I have done will give you some clue.

  • \Boot\BCD error (0x000014c)

Here's the full story.  A friend of mine gave me their laptop because they weren't able to get it to boot.  It was having the "BOOTMGR is compressed" error, so I booted up my MiniPE and uncompressed the drive.  After uncompressing, I restarted the computer and it booted up just fine.  Once inside Windows, I went to Shut Down...Restart the computer.  Once it rebooted, instead of going to Windows I get the error as follows:
Windows failed to start.  A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.  To fix the problem:
    1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart the computer.
    2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."
    3. Click "Repair your computer."
    File: \Boot\BCD
    Status: 0xc000014c
Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data.
Alright, so I've seen this error a bunch of times before.  Until now, I had only ever seen this error on Vista machines and I've read that it can happen to Win 7 users, too.  The problem is, this computer is running Windows XP SP3.
When my buddy bought this laptop (HP Mini 1000... the really tiny one with no built-in DVD/CD and only has a 16GB SanDisk pSSD drive), he opted to buy the Windows XP Downgrade directly from HP.  This computer normally runs Vista (I don't know how with its specs) but this one was imaged by HP for Windows XP.
Is there a solution for this for XP users?  I've already run CHKDSK which corrected a lot of errors, and I've already run an MBRFIX which didn't do squat.  I wouldn't normally hesitate to run a Repair on the OS, but HP didn't send him any operating system discs.  If I use a TechNet XP Home SP3 cd, I don't think it will accept his product key (damn HP OEM).
    Any suggestions?
P.S. This isn't related, but what's with all the healthpills posts advertising online pharmaceuticals?  Do they really think anyone who frequents tech support forums are gonna follow that link?  :o

Actually it is not hard to fix this this problem
What you will need to fix it is :
    1- A 2gig flashdrive (I used a 2g and it worked,not sure if any other size works)
First visit this link  https://www.dropbox.com/s/t88gryfudq3741n/RepairDiscWindowsVista32-bit.iso (Thats my dropbox which contains the Windows vista Iso  DO NOT EXTRACT IT , just put it on your desktop and leave it there.
2-Visit this link and download and download the usb installer(On the bottom of the page it will mark Download uii in a blue box) , this will turn your flashdrive into a bootable flash drive http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/
3-Run the program and it should look like this http://www.flickr.com/photos/100773530@N06/
(Make sure you select Windows Vista Installer and note that this will not reset anything on your victim Computer )
4-Now in the select your iso option in the program select the iso which you downloaded from my dropbox by selecting browse AGAIN DO NOT EXTRACT
5-Now put your flashdrive in your computer and select the drive And when everything is done it should look like this http://www.flickr.com/photos/100773530@N06/
6-Now select create and note that THIS WILL FORMAT YOUR FLASHDRIVE\
7-Now you have a bootable flashdrive
8-Now insert your flashdrive into yoor victim computer and go into your Bios and set your usb as your first boot device by moving it first in the order (If you dont know how to do this visit this link) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8VZ95_XFA8
9-Now restart your computer and it should mark Windows is Loading files on bottom of the screen Just leave your victim computer like this for about 10 - 15 minutes and it should just have a blank screen without the user accounts.
10-Restart your computer by pressing the button on the Tower and select Last known Good Configiration DO NOT TAKE OUT YOUR FLASHDRIVE and your computer will start normally
11-Take out your flashdrive and restart computer again and you are good to go
When this works please vote thats all i ask Hope I helped you

  • PXE problem - \boot\BCD 0x0000098 does not contain a valid OS entry

I am setting up PXE on my SCCM 2012 server.  I have a seperate DHCP server running WDS(unconfigured).  I have DHCP option 66 and 67 set  (\boot\x86\wdsnbp.com).
I have PXE configured to recognize unknown computers.  The deployment assigned to the unknown computers collection.  And confirmed that the boot images are on the distribution point (only 1 distribution point in enviroment).  I do not have
a SMSPXE.log on sccm server if that is any indication of anything.
My workstation boots PXE, I hit F12 and it sees the PXE server.
    I get a b/w screen...

Windows has failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
    1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer
    2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."
    3.  Click "Repair your computer."
If you do not have this disk, contact your system administrator or your computer
    manufactuer for assistance.

Any suggestions to what might be the issue?
    Thanks,

Unfortunately I am in exactly the same situation but under slightly different circumstances.
We recently took delivery of 10 new systems, whilst developing a new/updated answer file the first two machines used have now developed this fault. They have been re-imaged several times, roughtly on its fouth deplyment the local machine entered this state
and we cant seem to get rid.
However any new system that hasn’t been used already is deploying correctly.
    Ideas?
    DHCP is MS / options:
066 Boot Server host Name: [FQDN name of the WDS server]
067 Bootfile Name: \boot\x86\wdsnbp.com  (the systems and boot file we wish to use are x64)
    FYI:
WDS is on same LAN subnet.
    WDS is Win 2008 R2
    - StatoLNL
On the 'broken' systems, try booting from USB media and then from a command prompt run diskpart and clean the disk.  Then power off and try PXE again.  I believe the clue is in the error message that the BCD store is kaput.

  • S440 problem downgrading to Win7 - /boot/BCD error

    HI,
I´m trying to downgrade to Win 7 prof on a new S440.
I have downloaded Win7 Prof 64bit from MS site, disabled Secure Boot in the Bios, but when booting Win 7 on external DVD drive, it quickly ends in a black screen telling:
    Windows faild to start .....
    File: \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD
    Status: 0xc0000000d
Info: An error occured while attempting to read the boot configuration.
Trying to boot from a DVD having a Win 7 Home 64 bit, which works on "normal machines", it simply freezews during loading Windows to RAM. This seems to have somwething to do with the new UEFI.
This is a show stopper, and cant uderstand why Lenovo do not provide a prober guide of how to down grade to Win 7.
Apåart from this, there is no serial number writte at the buttom of the machine, meaning, we have to call Microsoft and convince them to give ua a key for Wint 7 prof.

I am having issues with my Window 7 on boot camp. My hardware is Macbook Pro Mid 2010 model and working on OS X 10.9.5. Recently I went to windows 7 to do a system upgrade but failed and was told to update the bootcamp drivers. I installed boot camp5 but seem to be the wrong version and change to boot camp 4 which was updated okay. However I still cannot do the updates. Can someone advice me please? Thank you!

Please see Boot Camp: System requirements for Microsoft Windows operating systems - Apple Support for the appropriate version of drivers related to the specific version of Windows 7.

  • Boot Camp not working with Windows 8 System Builder

I have a 21.5 inch late 2012 iMac running 10.9.1, and purchased Windows 8 System Builder to install with Boot Camp. I also have an external Samsung DVD writer for the Windows disk and a 16-gig USB thumb drive for the support software.
Because I have the external DVD, I did not select the Boot Camp Assistant option to create an ISO image. Boot Camp proceeded through several steps, downloading the software and partitioning the drive. But it hangs up at the black screen, after I boot from the Windows disk. Error: "Couldn't find BOOTMGR."
It seems that people with similar problems are finding they have to create a bootable USB <http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1511982>. But I don't understand how to do this step. Can somebody explain the process / what to look for on the DVD? Or do I have to download something, in which case I keep being led to this <http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/hh699156.aspx> but I need Windows 8 and not 8.1.
    Thanks for any help.

    UPDATE
I have made a lot of progress. Windows is now running and trying to install. It identifies the various partitions but says that I cannot install Windows on the Boot Camp partition or any other. I select Drive options (advanced) and Format the Boot Camp drive, but it makes no difference.
    This is the Windows error:
Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks.
Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer BIOS menu.
Would appreciate any help. I installed Windows on an older Mac years ago without much trouble.

I searched on internet, I think this is caused by my graphic card(ATI 5750), but I have no idea to solve it
I don't know my system boot failure due to these error or another things.
    my PC specs:
    motherbroad - gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3 (bios ver - F11)
    cpu -  i5-750
    display - ati 5750
    os - arch 64bit
Currently, I have downgraded back to 3.13.
I hope someone can give me some idea,
    Thanks

As there are errors associated with ntpd, I would temporarily disable the ntpd service and also ipv6.
If they are not the only problem, at least your logs would be easier to examine for other problems.
