Windows XP won't boot since adding Lion

I posted this earlier but didn't get much of a response. Prior to installing Lion, I had partitioned my hard drive using Boot Camp and was running Windows XP Pro. When I decided to try Lion, I didn't install Lion over Snow Leopard. Rather, I downloaded Lion and created a Lion installation disk. I then partitioned my Snow Leopard partition and installed Lion on the newly created partition. By installing Lion this way, I do not have the additional Recovery Partition. I have had zero problems with Lion so far except that I can no longer boot into XP.
When I start the Mac and hold down the Option key, the Windows parition is still visible as a startup disk. When I select it, it starts to boot into Windows. I then get the screen asking if I want to start normally, in safe mode or with last good configuration, etc. It doesn't matter which I select. Windows starts to load and then crashes and the computer restarts in Lion.
I know that other folks have lost their ability to boot in Windows after installing Lion but most folks can no longer see their Windows partition. This is not my situatiion. When I open disk utility, the Windows partition is still there and it shows how much disk space is used and available and it says that it is formatted with NTFS. So all appears normal (to me).
Any suggestions as to how (and whether) I can get this to work again? In the Mac OS X Support Essentials v10.6 book, it says that Boot Camp can't be used on drives containing more than 1 partition. So I'm wondering if it's even possible to run Windows via Bootcamp if I have both Snow Leopard and Lion installed in separate partitions on the same hard drive. If not, would I be able to run XP with Parallels instead?

I'm guessing - and this is just a guess - that while the Windows partition is still there it's now numbered differently than it was before. That is, before it was partition 2 but when you split the Snow Leopard partition it became partition 3. So while the Mac can find it and start the boot process, Windows gets confused about "where it is" and fails. If my guess is right there may be a way to fix this if you can somehow edit the configuration data within the Windows partition, but I don't have any suggestions as to how to go about that.
You can definitely run XP with Parallels. Whether you will be able to get Parallels to pick up your existing BootCamp partition or that will continue to fail due to the above issue I don't know. May be worth a try, though.

So what is the right one ?

Desktop PC with Windows Vista won't boot up

My Acer Aspire 180 Desktop PC with Windows Vista won't boot up and has a Recovery error message that says it shut down unsuccessfully. Can someone help me with this issue?

If you have Recovery Disk then try to repair install. If you do not have then you have to contact Acer Support for getting them.
Once it is recovered you must update the Graphic Card Driver. Visit the website of the Graphic Card manufacturer to update it.

Creating Recovery Disks when Windows 7 won't Boot

My sister's hard drive is in imminent failure on HP G60-535DX Notebook. Windows 7 won't boot. I need to make recovery disks. I have been able to back up info going into System Recovery Manager, but I don't see an option to create recovery disks to install the system on a replacement hard drive. Is it possible to create the disks or order them?

MBP won't boot since Lion install

Computer will start up fine and get to the Galaxy background screen. No icons appear, no dock but the apple/finder/edit/etc....across the ropappears. No clock either. Once the spinning ball held for about 15 inutes. I restarted by hold down the power switch and restarting. Now it just sits with the arrow pointer but nothing else happens.
Thoughts?

Hold down command-R while restarting. That should boot you into Lion's recovery mode. Use that to run Disk Utility and repair the hard drive (not the permissions), and then reinstall Lion over your current system.

Windows xp won't boot after cloning hard drive to a bigger drive

I have a HP Pavilion Dv4170us laptop added some new upgrades to it.. max RAM 2GB... a new battery... and I bought a 160GB samsung IDE drive to replace the origional 100GB drive...Using EZ Gig II software and usb drive adapter I successfuly cloned the smaller hard drive but when I swaped them out it won't boot windows xp.. just a black screen with the blinking curser at the top left corner... using my windows xp pro disc.. i ran the system recovery and tried first fix mbr command... then I tried fixboot.. I also looked for the boot.ini file which is not in the C: root drive...I only found a back up copy of it in the windows/pss folder... this is on both drives.. so the cloeing copied it all... but the origional drive will boot and the new one won't... I even tried reinstalling XP as a repair installation...still nothing... any ideas??

[865PE NEO2 PFISR] Won't boot with added memory

Recently I upgraded a few items on my PC which has been running fine for 18 months or so. I changed out the video card and bought double the memory of the same brand and type it had in it. I went from 1gig (2 sticks) and added two more sticks. But now it won't boot. The power is on but no output whatsoever.
I RMA'd the memory thinking that might be the problem but it's the same with the new set. I tried all sorts of memory/slot combos. Basically, the new memory works fine if you swap it out in bank A with the old stuff. That's how it's running right now, so I know all of the sticks are good. I can take a third and put it in either slot bank B and it'll boot, but obviously not run properly. But any combination of these four sticks and the system won't boot!

What brand, model, and speed are the RAM sticks. Did you check your Test Report booklet which came with the mobo. If you can't find it, you can go to the MSI website and look for your MOBO and get the test report that way. Some brands/models will that have been tested are shown in the report to be okay in all 4 slots, some only test okay in 2 or 3. Check this report and if it is one of the brands/model/speed tested you will see how it fared. It may well be you the MOBO doesn't like your RAM in 3 or 4 slots.
Maybe I missed it, but did you try each slot with only one stick at a time? You may also have a bad RAM slot.

MacBook Pro won't boot up after Lion upgrade

I upgraded my 13" macbook pro to lion last night. I watched some movies until the battiery died. Now it won't boot up. Indicator light does not come on and it makes no noise. Battery indicator says it's full. Any suggestions?

MBP's are very finicky about RAM. Most of us here will recommend Crucial or OWC as the best source. If I were you I'd put the original RAM back in and see if the problem goes away. If so, return what you just bought and buy from one of the vendors I mentioned.

Bootcamp Windows Installer won't boot properly on rBMP late 2013

I just bought my MBP Retina 13" Late 2013 last week. It came with Mavericks 10.9, and I have since updated it to 10.9.1.
I have installed Windows 7 64bit using Bootcamp, and ran into a situation, which I hope the experts here could give me a hand.
I used the first two options in Boot Camp Assistant (BCA) and sucessfully created a Bootcamp Windows Installer for Windows 7 64bit on a USB Thumb Drive (USB 3.0). Then I launched Boot Camp Assistant again, and selected the last option to install Windows 7 64 bit on the bootcamp partition, the installation went through successfully. Both Windows 7 and the bootcamp drivers are installed, and I am able to dual boot OS X and Windows properly.
However, if I try to launch Bootcamp Windows 7 USB Installer created using BCA as described in the above by holding down <option> key while rebooting, and select the USB device lableled as 'Windows', Windows 7 Installer starts (in BIOS boot mode, I believe) and then it freezes after it gets to the language selection screen, the mackbook no longer responds to either the trackpad or the keyboard.
In other words, this Windows 7 USB Installer boots properly when launched by BCA's third option. However, this USB Installer does not boot properly when launched by selecting 'Windows' after holding down <option> key while rebooting. What am I doing wrong here?

I did create a Recovery Disk from inside Windows 7 this weekend following your suggestion. Unfortunately, this has the same problem as the installer.
However, USB Installer I created for Windows 8.1 could boot properly both in BIOS boot mode or EFI boot mode. This Windows 8.1 USB Installer is created using the standard procedure for the BCA; the only difference from the Windows 7 USB Installer is that I used Windows 8.1 ISO instead of Windows 7 ISO.
With this Windows 8.1 USB Installer, I am able to access the BOOTCAMP partition and perform necessary operations to fix startup issues, and perform backup and restore using the native Windows tools for the BOOTCAMP partition. And no need to spend $30 on WinClone

Macbook Pro won't boot after Mountain lion upgrade

I bought the Mountian Lion upgrade and it installed fine on my MacBook Pro, and the machine worked fine yesterday. I performed a normal shutdown, and today it won't boot up. The Apple logo and the spinning pinwheel is all I get. Is there a known issue?

How to back up a Windows partition created in Boot Camp in Lion.

Hello. I have Lion installed and I already had Windows 7 installed aswell. I used boot camp. Boot Camp booted Win. 7 just fine. Then, yesterday, I tried to boot into Win. 7 and all that apeared was a Black screen with a dash in the upper left hand corner blinking. I let it sit like that for 30 minutes. I eventually lost patients and held the power button for 5 sec and booted back into Lion. I have many files in Windows 7 that I need. I have no backup of Win 7 but I do have a backup through Time Machine of when it was working. My main Question is this, when I'm in Lion, how can I back up my Windows files and make a bootable image out of it so I can reinstall it through bootcamp. I need to keep my files and there is no chance of me restoring from a past Time Machine backup as I need all of my files on Lion aswell. Oh, BTW, im using a 2011 Mac Book Pro with all the latest updates. Any help is apreciated. Thanks!

I'm running the latest Boot Camp on a 21" iMac (3.06 GHZ) and Snow Leopard. Windows XP (service pack 3) ran great the first time I installed it using Boot Camp assistant, but...
Now when I try to boot to Windows I have two problems:
1. It won't boot up, but freezes on a white screen.
2. It kills the USB keyboard. The keyboard and mouse running through it just stop working.
I can get the keyboard back if I restart, hold OPTION then choose the start up disk -- which I'm shocked works at all because the moment the OSX login screen comes up, the keyboard's frozen again -- then unplug the keyboard, restart again under OSX and plug the keyboard back in to get it working once more.
Honestly, I just want Windows to boot up like it's supposed to. Does anyone have any suggestions?

An Interactive Tuturial we bought used QuickTime, and the sound sounded like the instructor was underwater.
I then went to this website and downloaded QuickTime 7.03, the version you PUSH with ITunes as I at first did not see your snugged away link to the stand-alone download.
Anyways after the download, I went through the installation, which at the end prompted me to reboot.
Well thanks Apple, now the Windows 2000 sp4, system won't boot at all!!!

Due the this recent catastrophic issue and other, with the official Apple Quicktime player, our company have deciced to uninstall all versions of Quicktime, mostly version 6, on our 158 PC's, and install the QuickTime Alternative instead.

Windows 7 won't boot or run sfc /scannow - says repair in

I upgraded my HP laptop from Vista to Windows 7 and it has been working for a year. This morning the laptop will not boot up and when I run repair it runs it over and over and will not boot up. I run the diagnostics on the hard drive it gets to about 8%
and then stops with #10008 Replace Hard Disk and then SMART Hard Disk Passed. I get into the Windows 7 repair page and run it over and over with no results and it does not list an any operating systems on System Recovery Page. On the System Recovery Options
page it says Operating System unknown. It does not allow System Restore either. I can get the command prompt (X:\windows\system32) but when I try to run sfc /scannow it will not let me because there is a system repairpending that requires a reboot to
coomplete, and so it goes over and over. I tried using my Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade disk but that does not help. I would re-install it but it will not let me do an installation unless I boot the system from the computer and not the DVD. It seems
like I am in a continuous loop to start out 2012 and I do not know how to get out of it. Any help would be great appreciated.

I formatted the C: portion of disk and reinstalled Windows 7 Premium Home Edition from scratch and went through setting it all up and over 90 updates, including SP1 and things seem to go fine. System rebooted a number
of times and it was working. Then out of nowhere went restarting on an update it went right back to where I started before. It appears through various operations I loose communications to the Boot file. When I read some of the reports I get the No Bootable

I run the repair disk over and over and then get it to run again.
The difference now is that all the Memory and Hard Drive tests run to completion and say OK. The last time that it happened I got a momentary blue screen that was gone before I knew it and I was back again to where I started. I am
not running chkdisk on C: again and it seems to be doing OK.
Any more ideas for me. I did remove and reseat the hard drive WD3200 just to be sure connections were OK before I formatted and started from scratch. Seems to me that the boot record is out there but I cannot get to it.
