WindowServer process taking up almost 7GB
I have a process named WindowServer running as User _windowserver. It is currently using 6.94GB of memory. I've never seen this process before. I'm on a new Mac Mini. Any idea why this process has such a huge amount of memory? Should I kill it?
Killing it is not a good idea. It's an essential part of OS X.
Are you running any Finder plugins or other sorts of "haxies" or system enhancements? Menumeters or iStat Menus? I've seen them cause excess memory usage all over the place.

Screen Sharing and WindowServer processes using 35-45% of CPU!!
I have recently relocated and reconfigured my Apple network and computers in the house :1) MacBook Air dual display MBA with 20" cinema screen in the office, and 2) and Mac Mini connected to a large LCD TV in the living room.
The plan now is to use the MBA as a primary computer and connect via wireless screen sharing to the MM so that I can monitor that system, run more intensive apps, watch EyeTV, file server tasks, etc.
But now this has increased CPU and fan activity on the MBA beyond what I would expect. The activity monitor indicates that the Screen Sharing and WindowServer processes are using combined between 35-45% of the CPU (screen share process is a constant 25%!!).
This is not good, and I wonder if it will be fixed in a future release. Any ideas or suggestions on how to limit the impact of screen sharing on CPU?It seems to be running better with system update, and use of a faster computer (now using the higher end mac book air)

Sridhar M.Hello Manoj,
Thanks for your quick response, Previously the server has 4GB RAM and now also it has same.
Yesterday i found some more information, like deployed(through SDM) applications also take some memory at the time of starting the J2EE server...Is it right?
Any other cause...let me know

my iTunes detects photos on my iPhone and it's taking up almost 4 GB, but there are no photos on my iPhone…. need help
This means you have 4Gb of photos in your trash.
Go to Photos - recently deleted (an option in the same menu as "camera roll" and "photo stream") and finally delete the photos.
The 4Gb of space will then be cleared. -
My (shared) iMessages are taking up almost all my iPhone storage. Is there a way to remove them to free up space on my phone?
Thx - the videos are on my Ipad - that is the problem - they are taking up all the storage and there is no room for anything else. Is there any place I can store them so that I can access them from time to time, but not have they use up all the space on the IPad? Sounds like the cloud is out...
-
Ok, What is all this "other" taking up space on my iphone and how do I get rid of it? It's taking up almost half the space on my phone.
"Other" includes data such as iPhone settings, contacts, calendar events, Safari bookmarks/cache/cookies, email and email attachments, SMS/MMS/iMessages, notes, app data, Safari cache, cookies and bookmarks, stored passwords, search index, home screen organization, wi-fi network data, etc. It should normally be about 1 GB. Yours in an indication there may be corrupt data on your phone.
Unfortunately the best solution to fix your issue is a restore. Back up your phone, then restore it using iTunes. Follow this guide:http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414. -
WindowServer is taking up a ridiculous amount of RAM
I just noticed that WindowServer is taking up a ridiculous amount of RAM on my computer. It is not slowing my computer down at all, it is more just odd than actually causing a problem (i.e. when i opened up finale or another large application, the WindowServer RAM usage dropped back down to 244 mb).
Any ideas as to why? This has happened twice in the past hour, seemingly without reason.Blackopsnc wrote:

System unresponsive because WindowServer process takes 80+% CPU
Hi all,
Recently i've been experiencing the following problem: while (f.e.) using Firefox 3.0.1 it regularly happens that my system becomes completely unresponsive.
As this started happening on a regular basis i've kept activity monitor on-screen, and noticed that the WindowServer process takes 80+ (sometimes 90+) % of the available CPU power. The duration of this unresponsiveness varies between a couple of seconds to over 1 minute ...
Any suggestions with regards to potential troubleshooting steps ?Hi, How much free space do you have on what size drive?
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, Reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
The 5 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
At least if it doesn't fix it, it'll eliminate a few questions.
Besides, once you really, really need it... you can't install it! -

MadhaviHi Madhavi,
Run this script on a server and you will get the individual process utilization. I am not sure how you exactly need this.
strComputer = "localhost"
Set objWMIService = GetObject("winmgmts:" _
& "{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\" _
& strComputer & "\root\cimv2")
Set colProcesses = objWMIService.ExecQuery _
("Select * from Win32_Process")
For Each objProcess in colProcesses
Wscript.Echo "Process: " & objProcess.Name
sngProcessTime = (CSng(objProcess.KernelModeTime) + _
CSng(objProcess.UserModeTime)) / 10000000
Wscript.Echo "Processor Time: " & sngProcessTime
Wscript.Echo "Process ID: " & objProcess.ProcessID
Wscript.Echo "Working Set Size: " _

Process: "kernel_task" taking up almost 100% of CPU
A few hours ago, I noticed my MBP start hanging and generally processing very slow. Apps would freeze at random times, and generally a lot of odd behavior.
I checked the activity monitor to see what might be causing this. It turns out, the process "kernel_task" is using almost 100% of my CPU. It has stayed within the 70-100% range, and has yet to go down. I tried many things, including restarting my Mac many times, but it remains the same.
Does anyone know why "kernel_task" is taking up so much of my CPU? Is there a way to somehow "reset" the process to get it back to normal? Any help would be much appreciated, since my Mac is, for just about all purposes, useless right now. It took me about an hour just to get to this page and type this message.
Thanks in advance!
P.S. I attached a screenshot of the process in the Activity Monitor. You can view it here: http://images12.fotki.com/v203/filejMEm/9ae47/8/1659168/8691947/kernel_task.pngI just want to add that I think the "kernel_task" might have started eating CPU when I stopped a RAR program in the middle of extracting an archive. I'm not 100% sure though that this is when the problem started.

"Installer" Process taking 2 GB working-memory
Hello, my Problem is the following:
- My iMac gets so slow, that nothing works anymore - I can barely restart, that takes minimum 1 Minute
- I found out, that a process named "Installer" is appearing regular out of nowhere and is taking almost 2GB working memory, then I have only about 10MB left, which is ofc too less (I got 4GB working memory in total)
-When I kill the process, everything runs normal again, and my working memory is back.
Has somebody an idea, where that process may come from, and how i can stop it?
I don't want to kill the process every day again and again, because it appears about every 2 hours.
I already went to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Users & Groups > Current User > Login Items and took all hook out - It's still not fixed.
I hope for help,
Greetings CFBSry that I reply late, but somehow I didn't get emails, and today ( ! ) I got ALL emails for ALL replys at once...

Ns-slapd process taking too much cpu time
Dear All,
I am currently using directory server 6.2 and it comes out that the ns-slapd process is taking almost 95% of cpu time. This goes for 2 to 3 hours then it comes back to normal. This is happening every alternate day. I have monitored the log but could not find any suspected activity which may be causing this.
Is this something vulnerable in 6.2?
Any tunings that i should undergo?

i am finding alot of the below unindexed searches:

Java threads and WinLogon processes taking CPU!
We are seeing a strange problem. We have a multi-threaded java application
that is deployed on a Microsoft Windows 2000 server (SP4) with Citrix
Metaframe XP (Feature release 2). When this application starts, we start to see
multiple WINLOGON.EXE processes (20 plus) each taking up 1-2% of CPU -
this raises the CPU usage on the server significantly, impacting performance.
We have tested with JDK 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5 and see the same issues. If we
run the java application in a single thread, we dont see the same issue.
Has any one seen this problem before? Any suggestion on how this can be resolved?
Thanks in advance! Thanks for your replies. This is a Citrix environment where there are 50 plus
users logged in and there are 50 plus instances of Winlogon.exe always
running. Most of the time the cpu usage of these processes is 0.
We tried a multi-threaded program that lists files in a directory every few
seconds. There are 40 plus servers in the farm that we are deploying this
application on. We are seeing this problem on only some of the servers.
If we run a single thread from main(), we dont see the issue. But if we spawn
10 threads doing the scans periodically, we notice that as soon as all the threads
start, the WinLogons appear to start to take up CPU. When we stop the java
program, the WinLogon processes drop in CPU usage.
Is it possible that Java and WinLogon share some dlls that could be triggering
the WinLogon processes off?
We have tried running the single thread and multi-threaded programs around
same time and the correlation with the winlogons is clearly visible. If we add
sleep() soon after we start a thread, the winlogons seem to kick in later.
