Windoze Midi on Intel Mac

I'm working on my friend's studio and he insists on using the SP1200 sampler/drum machine. Anyway, we have a library of about 9 million drum sounds, but we don't wanna have to sample them all. We would like to use Midi Sample Dump.
I've tried Alchemy in Classic and straight OS9 and it's not working. Don't know why either. I've also tried DSP Quattro in Tiger and Elektron's C6. C6 allows me to receive dumps, but it doesn't get them back into the SP1200. I believe it's the 12 bit sample format. I can't find an OSX program that supports 12 bit samples.
Anyway, it looks like the only functional software for this purpose is in the Windoze world. Has anybody had success using Windoze midi programs on an intel Mac?
Many thanks.

Short answer: You can't. Buy an older Mac that supports OS 9 booting or Classic mode with OS X 10.4 or earlier.
Longer answer: There are third party OS 9 emulators that run on Intel Macs. One of them allows one to run OS 9.0.4. But these generally require one to have an OS 9 boot ROM image, and AFAIK there's no way to get one of these that complies with Apple's licensing requirements, other than buying an older Mac that supports OS 9 booting. As such it is against this forum's Terms of Use to discuss it further here. Google is your friend.

I changed the hard drive in my mid 2007 Intel Imac.  I'm trying to re-install the the op system. I'm receiving a message stating that "Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer." I am a "newbe" to Mac's.  Can someone help? Please be gentle.  I raeally am a novice. Thanks in advance

I believe these are the wrong system restore discs for your model iMac, assuming your are correct that you have mid 2007 iMac.
These gray colored type restore discs are Mac-machine specific and are the wrong ones for your iMac.
    They will not work.
The original OS X restore discs for your model iMac would either install OS X 10.4.11 Tiger or OS X 10.5 Leopard.
You have gray system restore discs for a later model iMac. These will not work with iMac year and model.
    Sorry.
You need to purchase a full retail version of OS X 10.6.3 Snow Leopard here instead.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
These discs will work with your year and model iMac.
Assuming that your hard drive was installed properly, these white retail OS X install discs should be able to boot, format and install OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard to your 2007 iMac.
    Good Luck!

  • Intel Mac Mini Core Duo Midi USB Issues

Is anyone else having issues getting Midi devices to work with the Intel Mac Mini's? I have several Midi devices that are't working correctly event though I have installed the newest drivers.
Currently I am having issues with a M-Audio Midisport 2x2 USB adapter. I loaded the newest drivers (ver 3.2.2) which are supposed to be universal binary to support the Intel Macs. When I connect the Midisport 2x2 to the Mac Mini I can not get it to receive Midi Output from the Mac.
When I look in the Midi control pannel I can see that the Midisport has been installed, but all options to select it are greyed out. Also when I try to select it as the input or output there is NO option to select the Midisport from the pull down menu. It only shows the "Built-in Midi" as and option.
The Midisport works fine on other non-Intel Macs. Please advise.
    Thanks!

It seems like the mini is doing alright so far. I think maybe the full erase solved whatever issue it was having. I also got my Core Duo Mini yesterday in the mail and it's performing like a champ. Definitely a nice machine.
I'll close my question for now, since the Core Solo Mini seems alright. But, as a warning don't get on Front Row's bad side. I tried force quitting it because it was taking too long to load the videos folder and then tried shutting down from a terminal and ended up having to turn the machine off.

  • Usb midi driver for older Edirol sk-500 keyboard for use in Intel Mac Pro

I have just moved to an Intel Mac Pro from my old G4 Power Mac. I was using a Edirol (Roland ED) SK-500 usb midi controller in both Garageband and Logic. The old driver doesn't want to work in the new Intel machine. Checked Edirol's site and didn't find anything newer to use and nothing that addressed the Intel situation explicitly.
Does anyone have a newer compatible driver or some other solution for this issue?
    Thanks,

SK-500 is a discontinued product and I do not think Edirol will ever release a Universal Binary driver. I'd suggest you sell it, and buy their PCR-M50/80 keyboard (these are awesome) or if you also want sounds, get the Roland Juno-G synth (128 voices polyphony, 1000+ sounds, full-blown synth and 5 effects processors). All these work as USB MIDI controllers with Universal Binary drivers.

  • Intel Mac - MIDI Interfaces

    Hi Everyone -
Can anyone help me? I have 2 USB MIDI interfaces, both Emagic: an MT4 and an AMT8. Bot work with my PowerBook G4, but I've just bought an Intel Mac, and the drivers don't seem to work; the Intel doesn't recognise either of them. I desperately need a solution to hook them both together, so I can use the standalone versions of the plugins I've bought, NONE of which have yet been successfully ported over to work on the Intel.

    Hi,
I have the Unitor8mkii,and the first time I used my new intel macbook,it did give me some trouble. The only solution I had,was to unplug the Unitor, and then plug it in again.Apparently, the Mac's AudioMidi setup utility had lost communication with the Unitor. After re-plugging it,AMS saw it,and it has worked great since.I use the unitor8mkii for a Mackie MCU,a Line6 Pod,and an old roland JX3P keyboard, and a now obsolete Edirol PCR30 (not supported on Intel Macs, and discontinued as well)and they all are seen by Logic Pro.
hopefully all you have to do is re-connect the USB cable.Sometimes it gets loose from the Unitor side,so check both ends.

  • No total recall after change from Windows Logic Platinum 5.5.1 to Intel Mac

    Hi Logic-users,
up to now I was using Logic 5.5.1 on a Windows-PC. Some days ago I changed over to Intel Mac and Logic 7.2.3. When opening a 5.5.1-Song it is converted from ASIO to Core Audio. But then I got a problem with spectrasonics Stylus RMX which I use as a drum-plugin. It was a VST-plugin in Logic 5.5.1 and is now the new Intel-nac-Version (audio-unit-plugin) in Logic 7.2.3. The MIDI-data is in the Logic-tracks but the problem is: the program doesn't use the new Stylus version automatically - there is only the outcrossed name "Stylus" in the Logic-channel. I have to activate it by hand - and then all the drum-channels within Stylus are empty. That means: I have to re-edit all the Stylus-drumsounds and -settings by hand.
What can I do to get real total recall? Or is simply not possible because I had too much change altogether (new OSX-platform / new Logic-version / new plugin-version)?
    Best regards,
    Thomas

    Thomas,
I'm pretty sure you're out of luck on this one, I'm afraid. The differences are to much to be able to translate from one to the other.
We all went through it when we switched from Mac OS9 to OSX. Then we all had to go through it again when Logic went to Audio Units.
If it was a matter of VST in OSX, you could probably open it up in Logic with Fxpansions VST to AU wrapper, but I don't think you'll bee able to get it from the PC VST version to the Mac OSX VST version.
You'll have to try and recreate the RMX settings by hand. Tedious, I know, especially if you had done a lot of editing.
Another option would be to open the song on your PC, and bounce the various RMX parts to audio files, and re-import those into Logic 7. I know that's not the same, but if you were done with the programming aspect of that song, it could at least get you the sounds back.
If anyone has information to the contrary, I'd love to hear about it. But this is how I understand it to be...
    Sorry.

  • TUTORIAL: How to make PPC Plug-Ins work on Intel Macs!

Hi guys, I wanted to share this brillant method with you all, collect ideas and create a list of Plug-Ins, you have succeeded to make work (I guess nearly all PPc Plugs will work this way but lets better stick to facts). Maybe there is a way to work with more than 1 Plug - Feel free to report and contribute! Kudos goes to a dear friend of mine... Let' share some power...
"I noticed some people complaining about not being able to use Trilogy and Atmosphere on Intel Macs. There's a tricky way to do it that takes about ten minutes to set up the first time and after that is easy. It probably works for other PPC-only instruments as well.
Here's the outline: OSX for Intel contains a layer called Rosetta, which runs PPC software that hasn't been updated. (You might run Microsoft Word via Rosetta and not even know it.) In general, Rosetta is no good for audio software: you can't use it for a sequencer or a recording application. But it's good enough for a lightweight plugin host like Rax, which does nothing but serve as a host for Atmosphere. So you can load Atmosphere into Rax via Rosetta, then run it alongside a UB sequencer like Live or Logic.
The only tricky part is connecting the two together. You need to get MIDI out of your sequencer and into Rax, and you need to get audio out of Rax and back into the sequencer. The MIDI can go via an internal IAC bus. The audio can go via the handy freeware audio-routing utility Soundflower.
    Here's how to set up:
-- download Rax version 1.2.3. (Version 2 and up won't work.) You can find it at http://macmusic.org/software/view.php?id=395 . Use the serial in SerialBox to install.
-- download and install Soundflower from http://www.cycling74.com/downloads/soundflower
-- in Audio MIDI Setup, create a new IAC bus. Instructions on how to do this are at http://www.spectrasonics.net/news/Creating-an-IAC-Bus.html . Name it Rhino. (You can name it whatever you want, but in these instructions I'm going to call it Rhino.)
    Now you're ready to go.
-- Open your sequencer and create a MIDI track and an audio track. Set the MIDI track's output to Rhino. Set the audio track's input to Soundflower 2ch.
-- Open Rax and load Atmosphere. In the Preferences, go to the Audio tab and set Audio Device to Soundflower 2ch. Now go to the MIDI tab and, under MIDI Inputs, make sure Rhino is the only thing checked.
You should now be able to send MIDI from your sequencer to Atmosphere, and then hear the audio through the sequencer. One last stage is to sync Atmosphere to your sequencer's MIDI clock, so that tempo-synched effects will work properly.
-- Still in Rax Preferences, on the MIDI tab, set the MIDI Clock dropdown menu to Rhino. Close the Preferences window. At the top of the main Rax window, make sure the Ext. Sync box is checked. The Tempo window should say 0, which means Rax is following the sequencer's master tempo.
And you're done. Save the Rax document and you can open Atmosphere with a single click. Trilogy works the exact same way, obviously.
If you want to use multiple instruments from Rax, you'll need to use SoundFlower 16ch and send MIDI on a different MIDI channel for each instrument (using the same IAC bus).
Anyone who's tried this, please post your results in this thread. Especially, try out other PPC instruments, and try using multiple instruments at the same time, and let us know how it works for you."
Maybe one of the Admins wants to sticky this
    With my very best,
    Vic.

There's another shortcut I've used successfully in order to access 'old' PlugIns on an Intel MBP :
Just use Logic 6 - and take full advantage o' that ole rotatin' rosetta
Meaning : Other than with native Logic versions 7 and 8, Logic 6 has to be fully emulated by the rosetta engine, and if your intel mac is fast enough, it does so very well - thus including all PPC PlugIns you still may have installed. Also works fine for PlugIns that were converted via FXpansion's VST-AU manager.

  • Anti-Virus and Firewall Software for Windows (on my Intel Mac)?

    Hello,

It is embarrassing enough that I am installing a copy of Windoze on my brand new Mac, not to mention voluntarily opening myself up to a host of viruses, spyware, and other PC garbage. If I can’t trust another Mac user for help here, then who can I trust?
Thanks for your mere comment. Now, anyone else with actual knowledge to share?

  • Time line on  Intel Macs

We just got some grant money at work and we are going to be upgrading our computers and I would love to get a new intel Mac (not a mini or book). Is there any chance the big machines will be out by the summer?...Any info would be great.. even a rumor link would be fine.
    Thanks
    -Allan

So I am guessing the Macs wont be ready till mid 2007 at the earliest?
Yes, you're guessing. Apple announced the Intel Macs at just about the same time that Intel made the CoreDuo available. I won't speculate, but I'd expect the development of a possible new PowerMac to be happening in parallel with development of a new Intel CPU.

  • Lisp on intel Macs?

All three of the major Lisp vendors with offerings for OS X on PPC have been ominously silent about plans for intel Macs. Has anyone heard anything recently? I hate the thought of having to eventually move to Windows or a stone-knives-and-bear-skins Unix...
    PowerBook G3 Pismo   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Been working on the lisp problem, though with public domain environments. Had been using OpenMCL mostly, but had also built SBCL and clisp. The latter is the most portable and ANSI compliant, albeit running slowly in byte-code. I pestered the developpers about Intel Macs.
ITEM: OpenMCL is a premium brilliantly optimized POSIX-compliant compiler that sadly, compiles into PowerPC instructions. That was its charm. They wil come up this spring with an AMD 64-bit version, which should be a stone's throw away from an Intel instruction set version.
    http://openmcl.clozure.com/
ITEM: Bill Schottsteadt (down at Stanford) writes back that he got an Intel mac, respects it, and at least got Guile (a Scheme derivative for building software) up and running. He maintains Common Lisp Music, and is also in need of a compiler.
    http://ccrma-www.stanford.edu/CCRMA/Software/clm/clm.html
ITEM: Steel Bank CL (SBCL, because it comes from Pittsburgh) has been respectable, compiling into PowerPC, X86, and other instruction sets. They will probably have a version sooner than the others because of this. Also, they have a page at their web-site instructing you how to build on as yet unsupported Unix systems. The most recent version of SBCL that works OK on Macs is 0.9.7, so start with that. It’s a boot-strapping compiler that wants somehow ther kind of lisp, so there will be hassles, but if you can build it, drop me a note and make the world a better place.
    http://sbcl.sourceforge.net/
ITEM: There is also a useful web-page for MIT/Scheme. They have centered on the X86 instruction set for Windoze AND Linux. They have an enticingly short web-page describing builds for other Unixes (Unices?). This is a good prospect, because these people have a keep-it-simple philosophy. Also, their web-pages suggests other lisps, such as Shcme48, the Scheme Shell (scsh), etc.
    http://www.swiss.ai.mit.edu/projects/scheme/
    http://www.gnu.org/software/mit-scheme/other-unix.html
ITEM: clisp is respectable and has a unique build procedure that first builds its own bootstrap, to put it simply. I had trouble at first building for Darwin, and over a period of weeks, exchanged emails and error messages till I got an earlier version up and running. Again, they support multiple instruction sets, going through the sticky wicket of the GNU compiler collection (gcc).
    http://clisp.sourceforge.net/
Bottom line: Writing this, I just got itchy for some action and just might splurge for a new machine and throw myself at this. Might go over easily, but you never know.
Hope this saves you writing a dozen emails.

  • Logic Express 7 on intel mac

I just purchased an intel mac and have installed Logic Express 7 on it.  I cannot get it to record audio (states "audio disabled") and it won't respond to midi commands.  Everything basic about the program seems to be up and running besides this.  As I've never used this program I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong in the set up or if the program won't run on my intel mac. Garageband 09 works immediately for me upon opening, as does Soundtrack 3.  Am I missing something or do I have to upgrade?  Thank you much for your assistance.

It seems that the Mini behaves well in general terms, but as mentioned by Mike Conelly in this post, under certain special circumstances, the computer "seems to choke when there were a bunch of plugs on the same track, performance was much better when I only had 10 short on each track instead of 15. This may improve some of the results already reported if you left 15 running on the first track, feel free to double check your results if you think it will make a difference on your box".
Comparing his benchmarks to others listed in the forum, is really encouraging.
I understand that LE is a lot less resource consuming than LP, so probably I'll end buying one soon. If so, I'll post my results. At this time, my iBook is collapsing when using two or three software instruments with big chords...
Last but not least, I'll always have the freeze feature to save CPU...
    Thanks again!

  • Trying to load pre-2006 lso files into Logic 8 on my new intel Mac Pro

I'm trying to load pre-2006 lso files into Logic 8 on my new intel Mac Pro, but they crash the app every time. files saved 2006 and later load OK. Anybody shed any light on this or know of a fix (other than the laborious work-around of re-saving all early lso's in logic 8 on the PPC and physically moving them via a portable drive to the new machine)?
(BTW, those files also crash the Logic 7 installed on the intel Mac.)

Upon further work with my migration, I find I was incorrect in the time frame assertion of these failed files: apparently, the creation/modification dates have nothing to do with it and the reality is that some files fail at random, while others load just fine. right now it looks to be about 50/50 Beats me why this is.
Anyway, for those interested, I've discovered a very helpful key to the quick processing of file data for a plethora of files (i. e. re-saving the "bad" lso files as Logic 8 projects on the older CPU and moving them over to my new machine), and that is the 'control key/launch' of the app. I hadn't realized that Apple had added this feature to Logic to enable easier work on multiple song files when one does not require the audio.
For those who don't know about it, the 'control key/launch' provides an option to disable the core audio at app start-up, thus allowing files to load instantly without loading the plug-in library files associated with tracks - great for copying MIDI data between song files, or in this case, re-saving a batch.
Still puzzled, though, as to why so many older lso files crash Logic when they attempt to load on my new CPU.

  • Installing AppleWorks on Intel Mac

I am about to buy a MacBook. As a teacher with older Macs in my classroom, I still use AppleWorks. However, as I recall the disk I use to install AppleWorks is an OS 9 program that I then update using the 6.2.9 updater to run under OS X. Since the Intel Macs don't support Classic, is there a way I will be able to install AppleWorks?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Whether or not the installer you have will run in OS X depends on when it was made. The installers for AppleWorks 6.2 or higher, after mid-2001 or so, are OS X installers. Otherwise, copy the whole AppleWorks 6 folder from the Applications folder from an older Mac to the Intel Mac. Burning it to a CD will give you a backup should you ever need to reinstall. Do not copy over any preferences (except the Button Bar preferences if you have customized the Button Bar) or the AppleWorks User Data folder. To keep within the Apple end user license, remove AppleWorks from the first Mac.

Something like this should work: http://tinyurl.com/ycy4rnu
Although list price is only about $200, with the extra battery(s?), Firewire cable, camcorder case, blank media, etc., that you will need if you do not already have them, $300 is not far off.
You can also consider other Firewire connected camcorders that are compatible with your Mac and OS.
Before I buy, I like to download the user guide for the camera I am considering and review it to be sure it does what I want. Regardless of which camcorder you are considering, if you cannot find the information about system compatibility in the camcorder's documentation, the retailer can help you find the information you need.
As shown in iLife System requirements, iMovie 8 can work with your Mac and a compatible camcorder:
