"Wine" & "Crossover Office" with Solaris 10 GA 03/05

Hello Solaris - Friends,
in Solaris there is the Windows - Emulator "Wine" Version 20041019 (I know, that's not an Emulator ...). Has anybody of you tested it with success ? Please, can you show me your Wine - config - file?
And is there anybody, who tested the commercial "Wine" - Version called "Crossover Office" ? Under http://www.codeweavers.com there is a 30 Day Trial - Download (you must only register with your E-Mail).
Thanks and Greetings !

That's correct. I don't get why there is so much hype behind Linux, but it is what it is. I have a good 5 years experience with many GNU/Linux distributions on many architectures, but I must admit it has no real technical merit no matter the vendor modifying the components which make it up.
QEMU and Linux compatibility (Janus I believe) helps, but until VMware, Parallels, and the Windows-only application vendors start porting their software to Java or natively, you'll have a bare selection of commercial desktop software. Another problem is that Adobe isn't updating the Flash player on Solaris for either SPARC or x86, and just delivered Flash 9 to Linux, so everyone except Solaris has it, and many sites like YouTube and even some Sun-oriented sites are broken on Flash 7 or force you to try and upgrade to Flash 9 when we all know it ain't there. FreeBSD's linux-compat is much more mature than Solaris', it can even run Linux versions of Realplayer, Opera, and Firefox with Linux-only plugins. VMware due to licensing and marketing is no longer available on FreeBSD, will never be ported to Solaris x86 with the current lack of marketing Sun puts toward their OS. Everyone except Sun has featured TV ads, until Sun does, their stocks will remain at 6 or less, with no commercial backing except in the server sector.
OpenSolaris these days is making great desktop progress and has a few applications that replace those proprietary titles which have chosen to not support Solaris x86. (Adobe Reader replaced by GPdf and Evince)
Sorry to go on a tangent, but I know Sun employees read these forums, and they need to know the important deficiencies. They're mainly superficial if you have the patience to hunt and find open-source wares from sourceforge and freshmeat, but then there are a few things that haven't been successfully replaced. (Flash)
Most GNU, BSD, and FOSS software is ported to Solaris, but Wine and some MPlayer codecs are the notable exceptions.
Happy hunting! (PS: I recommend watching the OpenSolaris communities for desktop approachability, KDE, and the one that deals with QEMU kernel modules)

  • Download and install drivers and patches Win XP host with Solaris 10 guest

Greetings. I would appreciate your help.
Solaris 10 successfully installed as guest on Win XP host. (Using Parallels Workstation).
Getting fatal IO error 146 (connection refused on Xserver "0.0" ... no screens found. Cannot bring up Xorg.
Research strongly suggest video adapter settings. Adapter is Mobility Radeon 9800 - not on HCL but not new either.
Since I cannot reach the Internet from Solaris, how do I download drivers and patches and transfer them to Solaris?
    Thanks Again,
    Sincerely,
    Jerry B

    any ideas ???

i hate to bump myself.. but has anyone got crossover office to work on 64 bit? because after installing wine 32bit.. on 64, i cant install any windows programs that i enjoy using and use often.. then i tried wine 64 bit, same problems.. most exes wont work.. when i click on Lost n found>> windows xxx application..
just a bouncing cursor, nothing.. ive tried their website, changed this and that in winecfg.. blah blah.. nothing..

  • Help with Solaris 10

    Hello,
I just got ahold of a SunBlade 100 system (that's having video problems, I already posted what the problem is in the Hardware section) and I would like some help with Solaris 10. I have never used Sun before, and I figured why not get a machine and start learning. =)
Anyways, I do alot of web design and networking...on Mac's though.
I'm setting this system up on a Rack along with a Win Xp box, a Mac G4, and a Linux Mint machine.
I also have two of these Scsi towers that came with the Sun System. They can each hold I believe 8-10 Drives each? Not sure..that i want to setup at a later time.
My questin is this. I'd like to run websites off my Sun system. But i'm not sure how to transfer my files from iWeb to the Sun, and how to control the sites on the system, as well as turning the site on, off, etc.
I'd also like to store music on it as well. Because I can have alot of Scsi drives, i figured I can get quite large amount of storage for songs. I'd like to set it up to where I can give someone a login information and a website (ex. myuploadsite.net) and they can go in, and upload there music. But, I'd like to make it to where I can make the website in iWeb, and run it off the Sun system, and store all the files on the Sun as well.
And my last question is this. How do I remote desktop to a Sun System from a Mac. I'm using Apple Remote Desktop, and the way the rack is setup, is that I remote connect to the Xp, linux, and Mac box's (saves monitors, and space. =), and also because I'm usually never home...
Thanks in advance for the help!
Oh, and if anyone has a Instant Messanger and wouldn't mind having a chat with me, that would be great.

  • Thunderbird running under Win 8.1 with Defender does not download attachments and offline content.

Thunderbird on Win 8.1 with Windows Defender is not downloading attachments from my roadrunner email account. It does so when running under Ubuntu 12.04 though. On Windows no attachments are shown. Also on Windows there is content that is not shown, I know so as there is an empty box. Then there is no option to download offline content. How may I use Thunderbird to read my email if it won't display properly? I trust the source of these emails as they are from the legal department of my former employer. I asking for the content to be resent does not work either. Please help me.

  • Does anyone know how to win a fight with layout manager?

I am using the form designer in netBeans to design my page, which has a jPanel on the left and a number of controls on the right.
My problem is that when I eventually get it to look half right at design time, it looks different at run time. The fonts are different, the combo boxes are a different height and some of my text boxes are 4 times as wide. http://RPSeaman.googlepages.com/layout.GIF shows both the design-time view and the run-time view. How can I win my fight with layout manager?

I'd like to do an experiment where you take say 20 pairs of students of java, with each pair matched in terms of prior programming and java experience, general knowledge, etc... and set one of each pair to learn Swing using netbeans and its layout generator with the other pair learning to code Swing by hand. Then 6 months later compare their abilities. I'll bet that the code by hand group will blow the other group out of the water in terms of understanding and ability.
    Just my 2 Sheckel's worth.

  • HTTP Server is not currently supported with Solaris 10

I am having a problem to start the HTTP Server on Solaris 10 (I am installing HTTP Server as part of HTMLDB installation on Solaris 10).
I had a problem to install it at first, however I've found on 'AskTom' that unsetting ORA_NLS33 helps and it did. Now I can't start the HTTP server and I've found on metalink that 'HTTP Server is not currently supported with Solaris 10, this is targeted for Q2CY05'.
    Has this been fixed yet?
    Thank you for your time.

We tried selecting a disk and applying sfs-boot at ok prompt.
Can you please help me providing detailed pre-requesites/steps/procedure to implement this and to start boot from SAN.
    2) How to SMI Label/Format a disk while OS Installation in Solaris 11.1?
As we know that ZFS is the default filesystem in Solaris 11.
We have seen in the Oracle documentation that for rpool below are recommended:
    - A disk that is intended for a ZFS root pool must be created with an SMI label, not an EFI label.
    - Create root pools with slices by using the s* identifier.
    - ZFS applies an EFI label when you create a storage pool with whole disks.
    - In general, you should create a disk slice with the bulk of disk space in slice 0.
I have seen the solution that using format -e, we change the labelling but all the data will be lost, whats the way to apply a SMI Label/Format on a rpool disks while OS Installation itself.
Please provide me the steps to SMI Label a disk while installaing Solaris 11.1 OS.

Oracle recommends below things on rpool: (thats reason wanted to apply SMI Label)

  • Small office with less than 10 APs

What is best way to handle or setup wireless connection for a small branch office with less than 10 APs?  Management doesn't want to spend any money to install a local WLC.  Those APs will communicate back to two WLC 5508 in Data Center.
Should I use local switch or flexconnect?  Any one has experience about pro and con between those two methods.  Ping time between branch office and Data Center is less 60 ms.
    Thanks,

What is the link bandwidth between those two site. If you have enough bandwidth then you can go for local mode deployment, but all CAPWAP traffic has to come Data Centre WLC (ie central switching)
If you would like to terminate branch traffic at branch switch, then FlexConnect local switching is the way to go.

  • To make a new site or not? (for branch office with small number of people)

We have a main office, with our DC (DC01) and a single site (SiteHO), and we are about to open up a new branch office in another city.  This branch office is connected to the head office via a 5 Mbps MPLS network.  The branch office will have around
5-7 domain joined workstations, and the people there will require access to the existing file and exchange servers in the head office.
I was thinking about not adding a RODC in the branch office and not creating another site in AD for the branch office either.  My thinking is that since the number of users is relatively low, it doesn't warrant having a new RODC and site.  The
traffic generated by the 5-7 user logon activities will be minimal, and the local profiles are stored on the workstations (no roaming profiles), so there shouldn't be much WAN link impact.  Obviously I would have to add the subnet from the branch office
    to the SiteHO site.
Can anybody think of something wrong with my reasoning?

I think the dedicated line has a little to do with AD since its used both to authenticate the users and move the data.
I am not sure what bandwith you get from an internet provider in your location, but for example you might get a 100Mb internet connection from an ISP. A VPN tunnel over a 100Mb internet connection I am guessing is faster then a 5Mb guaranteed MPLS link.
The advantage of MPLS is that you can have QoS policies for voice and video traffic.
If users move 'very large files' perhaps a local file server might be an good option. DFS replication can save a lot of bandwidth in that case. And then you would have 'local resources' in the branch and in case of wan failure the users will not be able
to access the local file server resource. So you would need a secondary DC in that location.
And if they are moving the files think (and check) the impact on the MPLS, because authentication requests go through that link, Exchange traffic (RPC MAPI) goes through that link so these might be affected. For example, lets say you have 2GB mailboxes.
All Outlook users use OST files. One user's profile gets corrupted and needs to be rebuilt. The Outlook client sets up a fresh OST copy of the mailbox so now its downloading a 2GB mailbox copy over a 5Mb MPLS while some other user is moving a 'large file'.
By local resources I am referring to file servers, printers, applications in the branch location that require AD authentication. Authentication works with both VPN and MPLS and in case the wan/vpn is down users can even log in with
    cached credentials.
    Hope it helps.

  • Several mysterious problems with Solaris 11 x86 install

    Hi folks,
I've recently installed Solaris 11 x86 as a replacement for Solaris 9 SPARC on an Ultra 2 machine. I like the operating system, but I've promptly acquired some mysterious problems. The computer is a Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo E2500 with a Pentium 4 HT 3.06 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM, an 80 GB SATA disk and a 147 GB SCSI disk.
I have had a few occasions on which the screen goes totally blank, the monitor claims that there is no signal, and I have to restart the machine. However, with the blank screen, the hard drive activity light is sometimes still flashing. This happens predictably when I try to log off (as opposed to shutting down) and when I use Totem media player and click on anything inside the Totem window. The motherboard has built-in graphics and brief specifications can be found here:
    http://uk.ts.fujitsu.com/rl/servicesupport/techsupport/professionalpc/ESPRIMO/Datasheets/ds_esprimo_edition_e2500.pdf
Yesterday my PS/2 keyboard started causing the motherboard to beep crazily when I use it. It beeps rapidly 4 times, then prints the expected character. However, the problem doesn't occur at the initial log in screen. The mouse cursor has also gone beserk on one occasion, flying all over the screen (I had this problem with a previous PC, but a different OS, and thought it was a hardware fault, which I why I got this new computer). With the keyboard problem, the machine is basically unusable. However, it is configured as a dual boot machine, and the keyboard problem isn't present with Windows XP.
There are also a few smaller, odd problems. Occasionally all the icons vanish from my Gnome desktop. The command prompt also mysteriously changed from $chris@pluto to $bash-4.1 just before the keyboard problem appeared, although that might have had something to do with me copying my home directory to a different disk and editing the /etc/auto_home file (moving the home directory worked fine). Also, unlike with Solaris 9 SPARC, I find that I have to have external SCSI devices switched on at boot time, should I want to use them later. That's a pain. With Solaris 9, I could run "boot -r" when I first attached the device, then switch on the SCSI devices and mount them whenever I wanted.
After the useful advice I received here about "more" and "less", I thought I'd post these problems and see if anyone can help. I'd really appreciate some advice. Can anyone identify likely causes for these problems? Which problems can I expect to solve and which do I have to live with?

    Hi folks,
I've recently installed Solaris 11 x86 as a replacement for Solaris 9 SPARC on an Ultra 2 machine.

  • Can't update Win 8 to Win 8.1 with Media Center

I recently went through a nasty divorce and all my stuff was put in storage for about a year. When I finally got everything back and set up my entertainment center I wanted to update the Win 8 Media Center pc to 8.1. I can’t do it through the store. Resource
Monitor says I’ve dl’ed more than 8 gigs over three days so far but the file is stuck at 2.9 gigs and won’t grow. I tried deleting the file to start over and can’t. wsreset fixed other programs that wouldn't dl but not 8.1. In addition, this pc was working
perfectly before it was put into storage but its wonky now. For example, I can’t update the system time even though I set proper permissions in the local security policy at change the system time. There are also a bunch of other aggravating little problems
like that and I really want to reformat and start from scratch.
In a related issue I got Media Center free when MS offered it. I took two licenses and used one as a backup for a pc that’s not connected to a TV. I updated that one several months ago and just noticed I don’t have Media Center in add features or anywhere
else I can find. Oddly enough it appears that I have the rest of the pro pack like BitLocker, only Media Center is missing.
    So I have two questions:
How can I update to Win 8.1 with Media Center starting from scratch?
How can I add Media Center to the pc I already updated?
I’m an Action Pack subscriber if that helps.

    Updated.
First, I want to know if your computer is a Windows 8 professional edition?
If you're already running Windows 8 Pro and have Windows Media Center, you won't need to reinstall it after updating to
    Windows 8.1
After upgrading to Windows 8.1  the Windows media Center will not be included if your system is not Windows 8 Pro, you can see it from the official site:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/upgrade-to-windows-8
If you want to install Windows Media Center, you need to add features to
Windows 8.1, and what  I have to point out is there is a difference between Windows 8 and Window 8 Pro when add packages to Windows Media Center:

  • Dual Booting OEM WIN 8.1 with Win 8.1 with UEFI enabled

I am a college student.I use Lenovo Z510 which has full UEFI with 1TB hdd of which 931gb is free.I shrinked it to 2 X 465 GB partitions of which one has oem install of win 8.1 with my personal stuff and games. My course requires a clean install of win 8.1 for various softwares like creo, catia.I want to install a clean win 8.1 for college and projects on my second partition with the same oem license...I have prepared a fresh win 8.1 usb with windows media creation tool....but i dont know how to proceed for a sucessful full UEFI installationhow do i do that ? guys ..help me...when i googled it came across efi and two other partitions...what should i do ?also i have no plans to upgrade to win 10 as it doesnt support the existing versions of design softwarea

I tried to boot windows from UEFI shell ( tried to map all the possible partitions with command "map"
) , but had no success. (when going, for example, into blk0: ; writing : "ls", error was displayed : "no file exists"
Looks like you were trying to use UNIX commands?   <eg>
    Try using  diskpart  instead?

There have been some cases where an EFI deployment of Windows has failed, and you have to use the system's EFI shell to boot the OS manually. The 'map' command is used after booting into the shell (if it does not run by default) to show which volumes exist
    on the system.

The specs for the tablet in question seem to indicate it only has 16GB "disk" for the OS to use. A standard Windows 8.1 core/pro would not be viable and Windows 8.1 with Bing is not available to the public. Since the tablet is already licensed
for Windows 8.1 with Bing, it would be best to get the recovery solution from the manufacturer. Otherwise you'd have to purchase a new license and then the OS may not have enough space to install/use properly.
