Winmail.dat in Apple mail

Wow I just have to share with y'all the software solution to those winmail.dat files that have been appearing in my Mail inbox from my office.
When I send files out to some people, frequently I will Bcc myself so that the email also appears on my home email - and it does - but in the form of a winmail.dat file.
So off I went to find out what others used to open these - and I was directed to
http://www.restoroot.org/OMiC/en/index.php
Love the inexpensive cost and the ease of the software too.
Just had to share,

Now how boring would that be!
Thanks for that thought.
If you stop using RTF or HTML for message composition
with Outlook and use Plain Text instead for a number
of reasons, this will resolve it without having to
use such software.
This is not a Mail.app problem only. The same occurs
with any non-Outlook email client used by a recipient
when the sender of a message is an Outlook user and
adds attachments to a message that was composed with
RTF or HTML instead of using Plain Text for message
composition - but primarily when using RTF with
Outlook.
This is a Windows Outlook bug that Microslop doesn't
care enough about to fix.

How do i open winmail.dat attachments in mail ?

Having problems with Winmail.dat attachments?  This is really Windows problem but their hubris will not allow them to admit it.
Windows does have a global fix for this problem but it is not a general patch - in their KB there is a fix for Exchange servers which cause the winmail.dat problem but most users don't know about it or have it implemented.

Here is a solution that Apple users can get for $30.  An Austrian program and APP called Letter Opener http://www.creativeinaustria.com/http:// is the solution to seamlessly opening Winmail.dat files.

  • TS3276 why is jpeg file lost and replaced with winmail.dat file in mail

I sent a jpeg file to my hotmail account, which is synchronised in my Mac Mail but the file was lost/converted to winmail.dat attachment, which I couldn't import to iPhoto. How do I import a jpeg image, emailed to me from an external source, to iPhoto?

I think you need to configure Outlook in Windows to use HTML messages.
Here is Microsoft's incomprehensible support document on the issue.
Here is one from about.com that makes sense.

  • Opening Winmail.dat files in Mail on iPad (Ms Windows Word, Excel, Ppt)

I thought I'd share my findings on what to do if your Word, Excel, Powerpoint attachments come into your Mail as winmail.dat files. In my experience I downloaded the following Apps:
      Pages
      Numbers
      DocsToGo
    WinMailViewer
      Letter Opener
To open the winmail.dat file hold the icon until asked how you want to open the file: WinMailViewer or Letter Opener (assuming you've previously downloaded both Apps).
WinMailViewer is exactly what it says ... a 'viewer' of the file.  The file is sent to the relevant App which you subsequently open to see a list of the files.
Letter Opener will bring up the attachment(s) in a separate window and gives you choices on which App you'd like to use to open or view the file with. Depending on what Apps you've previously downloaded:
For Excel it might list: Quick Look, DocsToGo, Csv File Editor, PDFReaderLite
For Word, it might list: Pages, DocsToGo, PDFReaderLite
DocsToGo is an excellent option for working on Word, Excel files (N.B. If you have a big Excel file with 'frozen' window panes, I recommend clicking on the 4th tool (bottom toolbar) UnFreezing the panes while you work or move around the file as I haven't figured how to work with it on!!)
Pages is the best option to use for editing Word files.
Numbers is probably the best option to use for editing Excel files.
Csv File Editor is another Excel editing option.
    I hope that helps.

I should further say the files I sent are .xlsx and .docx files.  They look fine my end and I send such files all the time without problems.
However, I did try to cheat by going in via the Safari onto my 'live' online email account and the Safari automatically transfers them to winmail.dat files with the same result.
Ahh - have just been on using my PC this time and you are right, it seems that the service provider does the transfer and then when my outlook opens the file (on the PC), it must reconvert to .xlsx etc again.
    Very strange.
Ergo, I guess the question should be how I open wimail.dat files ??

  • Import contents thunderbird data to apple mail

import contents thunderbird data to apple mail

    Hi Shootist,
you may ask - but the answer is allready given in my first post:
1st: I used TB for years now, on WIN, UBUNTU and the last 3 or 4 Years on MAC as well.
And as I wrote on my second post in here:
2nd: because TB has many features NOT that would be essential for working with MAC, iPhone, iPad etc. like it is thought. It starts by Adressbook Sync, continues on not automatical working sync of Lightning with iCal and goes on with many other issues like DL all mails another time, when the HDD is full once.
I know, that TB has some features, that are hard to miss afterwards. Once again: I used it for years now and I loved it. But its no more covering all aspects of what I need - privately and for business usage.
I would be soooooo happy, if anybody would post an answer and not again another question, why not using TB instead of Mail.... ;-)

  • How to export apple mail to Windows outlook 2013

Is there any possible solution available to export all my data from apple mail to windows systen in outlook 2013.
There are tons of emails that I have managed to save in the past 12 years (believe me there are a lot of them with multiple attachments) and I do not ant to loose any one of them. I Just want to move them to my windows system in outlook 2013 for which I could not find any particular solution.
On the other hand outlook 2013 is unablr to sync all my emails via Imap. It shows multiple errors which I am not able to figure out. PLease suggest any simpler method which posses minimum hassles. Thanks

Watching this long discussion I couldn't resist myself to share my view on this topic. Once in a while I too had the same problem and I had to transfer a **** lot of emails from Apple Mail client to Windows Outlook. Imap failed and was of no use for some stupid mail crashing reason. I searched for manual work-arounds and posted many queries on various mac forum sites (including this one). I received many responses as solutions for manual process but none of them could transfer my emails from apple mail to outlook.
I knew about the email converters but never wanted to pay a single penny for them but unfortunately I had too. I bought this apple mail to pst converter mentioned by TON456 and after archiving apple mail data and moving it to windows system, it took the application only three clicks to convert the email file format to the desired one that outlook can import (i.e, .PST). I saw no point in buying the tool but its the fault of email client makers for not providing the proper import/export means (seems kind of mean to me, as they need us to stick to their client only). Big companies like apple and microsoft should figure out this situation and provide free solutions.
On the other hand if Imap crashes (as mine did too) then users like us have no options other than email converters. Though they are costly but there is no help to user in pointing out those solution posts.
To the thread starter I would suggest to go with Imap mail configuration but if it still doesn't work then using the apple mail to pst converter is only way left. Thanks.

  • How to get Apple Mail to show all calendars

So you know how you click a date on Apple Mail and it will display your calendar and you can add it? So I have gogle calendar integrated into the iCal application where all my separate google calendars appear. However, on apple mail when it has the quick add to calendar that surrounds a date it only shows the primary google calendar. Any idea on how to change this?

  • How can I get Mac mail to open winmail.dat attachments on lion 10.7.3

How can I get Mac mail to open letter attachments winmail.dat??   (Lion 10.7.3) Any help appreciated...

    Sorry peterskine,
it's true in part. There's more then one article on the subject "Recipients receive a winmail.dat attachment":
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/outlook-help/recipients-receive-a-winmail-dat- attachment-HA010153018.aspx?CTT=1
The odd thing is that my colleague and me use the same release mountain lion and we received the same email from someone on Outlook2007. He received the mail with the attachment, whilst I saw a "Winmail.dat". It already happened to me on snow-leopard, some month ago. Up til today I don't know what the difference between our machines is.
But it is interesting: the same OS, the same mail-clients (Apple Mail) and still different results.
Note: on my machine it used to work properly. It just suddenly happened that I started to receive winmail.dat files in stead of proper attachments.
When I have more time on hand, I cant try to find out why this happens.

  • Winmail.dat in Mail

I have a google account and I use mail to receive the mail.

    Hi
The person that is sending you emails, has chosen in Outlook, to use the RTF format, for emailing and or specifically for emailing you. Perhaps this is default Outlook behavior at times.
This results in the winmail.dat file, which is the RTF format, of the attachments that were intended for you.
If the user would configure Outlook, to use the HTML (web)  format, for emails, then you would receive the attachments as intended. As well as anybody else.
Apple mail and other mail systems, do not understand the RTF (rich text) format, and probably have to pay Microsoft licensing fees, to be able to use this format.
The options, for setting this in Outlook, differ for different versions of Outlook, but are found generally under
Tools > Address book, for setting a specific person to , use HTML format, and not RTF format, that persons email.
Also, under "Tools" > "Options", > "Mail format", for setting that all emails, will use the HTML format, instead of the RTF format.

  • HT2614 Help! How do I open a winmail.dat attachment with my Mac OS 10.6.8 & Mail 4.6 (1085) Thank you.

Help! How do I open a winmail.dat attachment with my Mac OS 10.6.8 & Mail 4.6 (1085) Thank you.

Winmail. dat file is attachments sent by Microsoft mail applications (Outlook, Outlook Express or Exchange) on a proprietary format called TNEF. Being a non-standard attachment format, users from other e-mail clients (like Thunderbird or Lotus Notes) or platforms (like Android, Apple, iPad or iPhone) cannot natively read them. But you can open it easily with a winmail viewer. Go to download one and good luck!

I have tried the standard responses to get them to use html or pdf or even altering my contact details but still no joy. Then I noticed that the email on my iPad accepts the message and attachments as sent. The message that is complete is on my ISP website and accessed using Safari 7.0.5?
