WinX missing for domain users (Windows Server 2012/R2, Windows 8/8.1)

Hi,
I recently created a discussion about a Winx (Right Click) issue that I have in my environment. For windows servers 2012/2012 R2 and windows 8/8.1, I don't have the right click menu.
I don't use roaming profiles. The workaround is to manually copy the Winx folder for each user who log on but I would like to understand why it doesn't work.
Here is the previous discussion I created.
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/4e80c369-242f-47ba-bd22-aafb9b0a6072/winx-missing-for-domain-users?forum=winserverManagement#ab6deeb2-cbcd-4147-a871-4c76d4cb37af
I really appreciate your help.
Thanks

Hi,
I could not reproduce the issue.
When i log in the Windows Server 2012 with domain user, the WinX folder already exists ans the Right Click is ok.
So you could create a new domain user to check the result.
Regards.

  • WinX missing for domain users

    Hi,
I currently deploy some Windows Server 2012 R2 in  a test environment and I have a strange issue.
If I logon with a local user, I can use (Win+X) or the "menu" when I right click on the Windows icon.
With a domain account, I don't have anything...
If I copy the folder C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WinX to my profile, it works but I don't understand why I have to do that manually (or with a logon script) for each user.
For information, I don't use roaming profile.
    Am I missing something?
Is it a normal behavior or a bug ?
    Thank you

    Hi,
Based on your description, I understand that you can’t see a context menu when click “Win+X” keys.

If I logon with a local user, I can use (Win+X) or the "menu" when I right click on the Windows icon. With a domain account, I don't have anything...
Would you please use another domain user account (or domain administrator account) to logon and then check
    if encounter the same issue?

If I copy the folder C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WinX to my profile, it works
Did you mean that the WinX folder wasn’t existed when this issue occurred? This issue seems to be caused by
the corrupted or missing WinX folder. Please refer to following thread and check if can help you.

  • Is there a 32 Bit edition available for windows server 2012 and windows server 2008

    Dear All,
Is there a 32 Bit edition available for windows server 2012 and windows server 2008?
    Regards,
    Ahmed

    Hi,
    Quote:
All editions of Windows Server 2008 R2 are 64-bit only.
Reference link below(session Supported upgrade paths):
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd379511(v=ws.10).aspx
And based on MS official description about system requirement for Windows Server 2012/2012 R2, we may find out that they only has 64 bit OS.

  • Windows Server 2012 R2 - Windows Network Load Balancing Converging Issue

    Hello,
My name is Brandon. We have started upgrading our servers to Windows Server 2012 R2. We have some powerful servers for running ESXI 5.5 as the OS with the Guest Operating Systems as Windows Server 2012 R2. As far of our migrations/upgrades we have configured
ADFS 2012 R2 into a Server Farm with Windows Network Load Balancing to add redundancy in the event a server goes down.
I have been having issues with a Node with the Cluster getting stuck in the Status of Converging. The only way I have been able to get it back up is to restart the virtual server completely and it is temporary. When I first configure the Cluster the two
virtual servers get added to the Node with no problems and fully converge. However, after some time a node will end up in Converging and this takes Authentication for ADFS down as the nodes can not be contacted over Port 443.

I have tried using 1 & 2 Virtual NICs on the machines and still receive this error even if only 1 VNIC is assigned to the virtual machine. Could someone assist me with why I am having this issue? Has anyone had experience with a similar configuration
and how were you able to make it work?

Thank you for your response. It took me a while to figure it out, but the whole issue was related to the type of Virtual Network Adapter I was selecting.
I changed the network adapter from E1000 to VMXNET 3 and have not had a single error in the event logs or Windows NLB.
I read somewhere that VMXNET 3 is preferred for Windows Server 2012 R2.

  • Upgrade Windows Server 2012 to Windows Server 2012 R2 in-place upgrade

I have tried to do an in place upgrade for Windows Server 2012 Standard to Windows Server 2012 R2 using the in-place upgrade at least a dozen times. Always with the same unhelpful failure message.
I have tried downloading the latest (setup) update and not downloading it - makes no difference - same error.
I would really rather upgrade this server than re-install. I have scoured the internet looking for answers and I can't find anything useful.
I have downloaded the latest 2012 R2 Standard iso. The version of 2012 installed is a stock retail Standard version it was never an eval version.
    Any help much appreciated.

I did check the article. I did the ADPREP as described and adprep worked fine. Unfortunately it did not make any difference. Log entries below:

  • Windows server 2012 and windows xp remote desktop connection loss

I am having this problem for a month now, and i am stumped with trying to find an answer . I have talked with several network admins in my area and with no luck i have not found a solution. I have a windows server 2012 placed with 5 pcs that are connected
on a local network , those 5 pc's connect to the server via remote desktop. List of pc's:
    1x Windows 7
    4x Windows XP SP3
All have the latests network drivers, all have the latest version of remote desktop installed. All have been scanned for viruses. All have antivirus software.
Problem is the 4 XP machines lose connection on when connected via remote desktop. If one starts losing connection the other 3 start to lose the connection aswell. The windows 7 machine is not affected by this it works fine.
    What have I tried:
    Scanning for viruses.
    Disabling Firewall and antivirus software.
    Updating all drivers.
Did many changes to group policy like keepalives etc.
    Turning off SMBv2 SMBv3.
Turning off network adapter Offload settings.
Changed some registry settings like keepalive, smb etc.
Updating every pc and server with all windows updates.
    Changed the router and switch.
Port forwarded needed ports like 3389.
    Updating remote desktop to 7.0.
I might be forgetting some stuff i will add as i remember anything.
So the thing is this. I use a Windows XP machine from my office I remotely connect to the server via the Internet and I DO NOT experience any connection loss. BUT the XP machines on the local network constantly experience connection loss via remote desktop.
I pinged every Machine from the server via CMD command PING. So when they lose connection the Packets get time outs . Packets get dropped between 1-10 packets when a connection is lost. This packet drop does not occur when using the internet or anything else.
ONLY when connected to the server via remote desktop. The packets get dropped at random intervals.
Problem is I use an XP machine and I am not experiencing any loss of connection , while the XP machines on the local network experience it , but not the windows 7 machine.
Router is ASUS RT-N53 , and switch is Dlink DES-1008D. Server is a Dell PowerEdge T110 II.
Can someone please tell me what can i do to solve this problem?

So today got some word from their office. They were using RDP from 8AM until 12PM all was working fine. Then got back after lunch about 1PM and got a few connection lost errors when they tried using RDP again. Its weird since they didn't have disconnects
in the morning, and started having them after lunch.
Also noticed, that two pc were not using RDP and were disconnected as shown in task manager. And they still got request timeouts.
Maybe this is not a remote desktop issue?

  • Windows server 2012 and windows 7 direct access

I am looking for some decent documentation on how to get direct access in windows 2012 to work with windows 7
Can anyone point me the right direction?

Hi, I got success through this
    http://syscomlab.blog.com/2012/09/how-to-get-windows-7-to-work-with-directaccess-server-2012/ and this one
http://syscomlab.blog.com/2012/09/directaccess-for-windows-server-2012-guide/ but I'm using NLS in a dedicated server (what is fine for me) but the Win7 client doesn't connect to DA (EDGE server) through internet. I'm using a LAB where WS2012 host acts
as a GATEWAY (using NAT) and for Windows 8 client is working fine but when I try using win7 clients it just doesn't work :(
Server WS 2012 RTM full patched + Win8 Enterprise RTM full patched + Win7 Enterprise RTM ful patched (including the recommended KBs for DA solution)

  • User Profile Disks with Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8 VDI

    Hello experts!
We are building a new server setup for the office and are unable to figure out why UPD will not work. We have VDI setup and a user for instance
connecting through the RDWeb workplace will dynamically get one of the available Windows 8 Machines delivered through Hyper-V and can successfully login on this machine via Active Directory. So far so good...
However, when we activate the User Profile Disks "UPD" feature the login takes forever and the VHDX will not mount on c:\users\...
as expected within the virtual Windows 8 machine.
The UPD config is quite simple, with just the path "\\vmhost\upd\" set. This share has (now during test) full access for everyone,
both on share level and on security level, but still the VHDX will not mount.
The UVHD-template.vhdx file gets created just fine when UPD is activated, and during login through RDWeb a TEMP-UVHD-S-1-5-21-1477358240-4159876597-995667825-500.vhdx
gets created, but there it stops... The login process takes a couple of minutes by the "Windows förbereds" (roughly translated to English "Preparing Windows"), and then the user gets logged in with a temporary profile.
     - The event log says (translated using Google translate):
Failed to obtain a user profile disk for the user account with SID S-1-5-21-1477358240-4159876597-995667825-500.
Make sure the location of the user profile desk can be reached, the server's computer account has read and write permissions to the site and that there is a template file for user profile disks at the site.
Name of the virtual desk"font-size:14px;font-family:'Droid Serif', Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;color:#222222;line-height:23px;"
    />HRESULT: 0x8007007B.0
Please help, it should not be that hard to achieve this.

  • Unable to Install Windows Server 2012 on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Hyper-V

My attempts to install are failing with a message "Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupt or missing....Error code: 0x800705070".
I am posting this on the Wondows 2012 Server forum but I have had exactly the same problem as described below with Windows 2008 R2 SP1.
As the title says this is on a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 host with all current updates. I have downloaded the ISO file from a Technet subscription file twice, once by direct download and once by the Akamai downloader. The virtual disk is connected with
the default IDE driver. I mounted both installation images as ISOs, located on a file system on the host server.  I have tried installs by deleting the VM and recreating both the VM and a new virtual disk, re-using a previously created virtual disk, and
deleting the partitions in a previously created virtual disk, and executing the format command, and then attempting the install.
I have exactly the same problem trying to create a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 VM on the same host OS.  With those attempts, I downloaded the Technet subscription iso 4 or 5 times, and burned one to a DVD which I attached to the created VM.  Same
    error message.
The virtual machines and virtual disks I created and used were all located on an RAID5 array, on a builtin Intel RAID controller using Intel Rapid Storage Technology software version 11.2.0.1066.  The host Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 uses this file system
but the OS is installed on a dedicated drive (C).
I had previously created a guest VM with Windows Server 2008 R2 (several months worth of updates ago) without drama.
I have spent hours reading forums and blog articles on this.  A common response is to download the iso another time, and/or burn it to a DVD instead of mounting an iso image. Although I didn't do the later yet with 2012 Server, but I have done these
other steps attempting to install Windows 2008 Server SP1. The install process takes a while (not to mention doing multiple downloads). Given this seems to be a common recommended remedy, and indeed based on posts does seem to eliminate the problem is some
cases, why doesn't somebody change the Microsoft installer program so it does a thorough integrity check at the beginning of the install process?

    Jeff,
After the exercise of Windows 2012 Server successfully installing (as I described above) I also successfully installed Windows 2008 R2 on Hyper-V.  From my standpoint, I have eliminated the problem (which isn't the same as correcting the problem).
The answer to your specific question regarding Hyper-V support is that the motherboard I am using, an Asus P5Q, is not supported by Windows 2008 R2 because it doesn't use ECC memory, and the vendor doesn't say it supports Windows 2008. But I am sure you
know the motherboard vendors often don't test older motherboards with newer software versions.  It appears that in specifying ECC memory Microsoft is trying to protect users of Windows Server from hurting themselves, not saying the software won't run.
Having said that, my suspicion in the beginning was, and still is, that it was some variable(s) left in an unknown state in the Hyper-V environment, which was why after trying to install Windows 2008 R2 several times I tried Windows 2012 which resulted in
the same error, and then encountered the same error trying to install Windows 7 on the same Hyper-V installation. The specific Hyper-V Windows 2008 R2 server had run without any operating problems for months before I started having trouble, and although it
had been quite a while since I had created VMs, that process used to work.  The hardware didn't change. What changed was applying updates through Microsoft Update, and a few access control rights I changed, and at least I think, I set back to their original
    value.
So in short, no, my hardware isn't supported by Windows 2008 Server.  Two, your assertion that you are running the same software configuration that I am is very unlikely to be true. There are an extremely large number of things which are different between
your test system and mine, such as which Windows 2008 components are installed, what updates were installed and in what order they were installed, and what other third party software each of us is running, and between AD, and all the features, a large number
of potential differences in ACLs, options, etc. and I don't for a minute think this particular problem was caused by the underlying hardware.
I do appreciate your taking the time to try to help me, and I hope there is one thing you and I could agree on. Microsoft could pretty easily make it much easier to isolate problems. In this day and age reporting hex error codes (as opposed to doing the
table lookup in the error handling proc), and not providing more diagnostic information seems to me to be almost quaint.  And in this case Microsoft can dismiss my problems on the grounds it was all on unsupported hardware. Unfortunately, I think they
are missing an opportunity to make their software better, because in my opinion what I encountered there are a set of conditions which will cause installations to fail that aren't going to get corrected.

  • Error in South Africa Regional Settings in Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8

Please note that the format for numbers in South Africa regional settings is incorrect. I discovered this through on of our products that would not work on Server 2012, but works from XP to Windows 7.
Where the decimal was always a point it has now been changed to a comma, which is incorrect and most likely will cause a lot of issues for customers in south africa that use decimal data.
I can already see spatial data breaking where decimals are used and stored with points and not commas.
To reproduce this error set your regional settings to South Africa and execute the following code in C#
    System.Convert.ToDouble("10.1234");
This will throw a FormatException. Change regional settings from a , to a . and there we go it works.

It seems that this is development related issue, please try to submit a new post in DEV forum. Thanks.
    Thanks
    Zero
Respectfully Mr. Xia, it looks like the OP is reporting a localization issue, not a development issue.
    For the OP, there's a
well researched post by a South African developer describing that the decimal comma is the correct choice.  The work cites University style guides, International conference agreements, and government legislation and regulation.
An excerpt from Mr. MacLean's post, quoting work from EEPublishers:
English-speaking countries (plus China, India and Japan) use the decimal point. There seems to be a general tendency to formally declare its use worldwide and the International Organisation for Standardization, ISO, also tends towards using the decimal point
over the decimal comma. In view
of the South African law, however, the comma shall still be employed in South Africa as “the only recognised decimal indicator for all numbers” [3].

  • Windows Server 2012 Standard - HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus printer not working after promoting to Domain Controller / AD Services

An associate and myself installed the built-in drivers for the HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus multi-function (network) printer on a Windows Server 2012 Standard server installation and everything worked fine whenever I want to print anything directly from the
Windows Server machine (there's a reason for this, so please understand that ;)  ).
We were able to print without any problems from the Windows Server 2012 machine, using the drivers from Microsoft.  Mainly, because HP has not listed any specific support for Windows Server 2012, only Windows Server 2008 R2, however, the drivers that
came with Windows 2012 seem to work very well.
PROBLEM: I later had to promote the Windows Server 2012 to a Domain Controller, and created the Active Directory configurations, even enabled the Print Services.  After doing all of that, the HP printer will not print anything.  It's like all print
requests directly from the Windows Server go to Nil.
Has anyone encountered a problem like this before? The only thing I can think of is that after perhaps something affected printing directly once we promoted the server to being a DC, and added other features / roles.  I even tried installing the
HP drivers for Windows Server 2008 R2, and the results are still the same...nothing prints.  Trust me, the printer is set as the Default Printer and even when choosing to print, we make sure the HP OfficeJet Pro is selected, and is on, as other Windows
Client PC's can print to it directly.
Does anyone have any suggestions we could try?  Thanks in advance.

While it is quite a while since this was posted - I can concur a similar issue exists.
We have spent the better part of a day trying to work out why other HP printers work fine but our 8620 prints are not printing and going to Nil.  The print server is hosted on a shared DC.  Comparing to the initial posters details, for some reason
it seems to be most commonly related to the OfficeJet Pro 8600/8610/8620/8630 series printers.
I ended up doing a print server migration from the domain controller to stand alone host and all printers now work from a single server rather than a mix.  Domain controller OSes varied from 2008, 2012, 2012 R2 (tested with multiple) and only after
all of those failed then tried a stand alone server os machine as a last resort which worked fine.  Printing directly from Win 7 / 8 /8.1 clients to the IP always worked.

  • Adding second domain controller in Windows server 2012 R2

Hello, our primary domain controller is currently on a machine that has Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard. We are planning to setup a second domain controller as a failover to our primary domain controller. My question is, can we have a secondary domain
controller on a Windows Server 2012 R2 even if our primary domain controller is on a machine that has Windows Server 2008 R2?

I think I found the answer to my question.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd464018(v=ws.10).aspx
"In Windows Server 2012, Adprep.exe is integrated into the AD DS installation process and runs automatically as needed. For example, when you install the first domain controller that runs Windows Server 2012 into an existing domain and forest, then adprep
/forestprep and adprep /domainprep automatically run and report the results of the operations.
Some organizations may prefer to run Adprep.exe separately in advance of an AD DS installation. For this reason, Adprep.exe is also included in the \Support\Adprep folder of the operating system disk.
In Windows Server 2012, there is only one 64-bit version of Adprep.exe. It can be run remotely from any server that runs a 64-bit version of Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, or Windows Server 2012. The computer where you run it can be either
    domain-joined or in a workgroup.
The version of Adprep.exe in Windows Server 2012 includes new syntax and parameter options in order to run it remotely. For more information, see
    Adprep."

  • What is posted availability specification for Windows server 2012? 2012R2?

I am trying to put together a high availability solution and I want to know what the availability 'claim' of the individual components would be. What is the availability specification for Windows server 2012 and Windows Server 2012R2?(for example 99.9%
availability for the O/S itself). This would be in a non clustered or Load Balanced state. Just a single server running the O/S.

    Hi,
SLA requirements determine how components such as storage, clustering, and backup and recovery factor into your organization. The term high availability is meaningless until you define how to measure it. IT shops measure high availability as the percentage of
time that systems are available, but the provider and consumer of high-availability services must agree on what constitutes availability and how the time is measured.
