WinXP Recognizes my Ipod, Tells me to Update, Updater always crashes!

I have an Ipod Mini 4Gb and it's just recently gone crazy on me. Windows sees that my Ipod is connected and then tells me that it needs to be updated. The Updater opens up and says Initializing, but it always crashes. I've done all the following to see if it would help me:
Reset my Ipod pressing the menu and select button
Re-Installed Itunes and the Updater.
Restarted my Computer on many occasions....
The Ipod itself when it's disconnected from the computer seems to be going very slowly when i try and go through the menus. Since i reset it, it has none of my songs on it at all and since i can't update it, Itunes doesn't even see the stupid thing. Anybody seen this before? I'm almost thinking i gotta send this thing in to Apple... and it figures this would happen when my warranty finished up....

For the people having problems with their IPOD not being detected here is a solution I used to solve it.
1. Plug in your IPOD
2. Left Click my computer and press manage
3. you will see an option called Disk Management, click it.
4. Most likely you will see a IPOD mounted there, change its Drive path to something that isn't used (anything but C).
5. Unplug your ipod, and plug it back in
6. Try the updater again.
My friend helped me out in doing this since my harddrive path was not named as C:. Instead the IPOD mount path was C:. Good luck, hope this helps some or all of you!

  • Ipod 10-12-05 updater software crashed my 10 Gig Ipod

I recently downloaded some songs into iTunes, and when I tried to synchronize my 10 Gig Scroll Wheel (the right term?) IPod, it told me the software I had on the IPod was too out of date to download some songs.
So I downloaded the 2005-10-12 IPod updater software, and when I installed the software on the Ipod, I got the icon message that shows the docking cable with an arrow. I read in troubleshooting that you might have to plug it into the wall and reset it, but same result. I tried holding down Menu and Play buttons while connected to the outlet, as well as to the computer, with the same result both times. Same thing when I hold down the Select and Menu Buttons, connected to the PC or the wall outlet.
I tried to restore factory settings through the updater I downloaded, but when I plug the IPod into the PC now, it does not recognize it anymore. I tried calling tech support, but my extended protection plan expired two weeks ago! I thought it might be the battery, but it seems too coincidental that this would go out at the very moment I tried updating the software.
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

Yey I am not alone. I am also having troubles on my 30G 5th G video.
Well it all started by not being able to turn my iPod off and it having to go to sleep by itself (never had trouble waking it up) then it was taking forever to update movies. They would be on my iPod and I would update it and instead of having more movies on it, it would have none, so I would disconnect and try again, and again, and again, and...... You get the picture. I could take me up to 3hrs just top get it to see new movies in itunes, oh yes and that was not taking into account the number of times I would have to unconnected and re-connect to itunes because it could not see the iPod or when it did it saw a nano or a shuffle or anything except my 5thG Video. So having run the 2006-01-10 updater like the rest of you on to my 5th G video Pod, I realized that this has been the biggest mistake of my whole life.
Having realized that I have been having all sorts of strange issues with my iPod since running the update like most I thought I better have a look and see what the issues were. I have now been sat at my PC for the 12 hrs trying to make head or tail of this as well as about 5hrs last night.
Having only just received this from Santa Obviously I am a little less that impressed with my current situation. I have been thru ALL of the support items, tried the “5 R's". not really wanting to go for a full restore I at least gave everything else a go first (including uninstalling the update! even then I could not force the old Update to my iPod.
Now I have a 5week old iPod that wont do anything, due to following all the "advice" from Apple Support and finally giving in to the restore (only with my hand over my eyes and looking thru my fingers) all the time thinking that I should not press ok!!! (Oh how I wish I had listened to myself)!!!!!!!
Now when I turn it on I have that lovely little folder icon that you cant get round. Apple Online support tells you to make sure the battery is charged, that its plugged into the pc, if you have no luck try to restore it!!!!!! If you are unable to do this put it into disk mode and force the update. HELLO!!!!!!! This is what got me in this mess in the first place following there advice. So now I have a £260 paperweight on my PC desk, not to mention a VERY unhappy fiancé (he is so MAD and gone to bed)!!!!!!!
Last moan I promise. And as it is a weekend can talk to a person about until MONDAY!!!! Real helpful APPLE
    CAN ANYONE HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!

    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

    Hi Stephan —
    Sounds frustrating.
In the short run, you can use downloads directly from Apple's Download site.
    To complement baltwo's excellent suggestion...
(I guess we're both presuming that you've already tried to open a "test user account" as a means to ascertain whether the behavior is limited to your user account, or systemic...)
A couple of ideas — general and ~specific — toward troubleshooting:
        (1)   My observation is that — in ~any situation like this — it's well worth the time to carefully review and follow all the steps that may potentially be relevant in both KnowledgeBase Article 106695: Troubleshooting Automatic Software Update in Mac OS X and 106692: Mac OS X: Troubleshooting installation and software updates. Most of the Softwatre Update and other download/installation-related queries I've read in Apple Discussions end up being solved by something discussed therein.
Hopefully, baltwo's suggestin or this will do the trick — and you can stop reading here.
        (2)   Looking ~quickly through your System Preferences.crash.log, the "machmsgtrap" entries jump out at me first thing. Quoting from the ADC document Examining File-System Usage: "Be aware that the machmsgtrap kernel routine will always be the system call with the greatest amount of CPU time used. This call indicates that the application is blocked and waiting for something to happen, such as a system event."
Thus, I've a pretty "geeky" idea — if you've the stomach to try it. If it's not already, move Activity Monitor's icon from /Applications/Utilities/ to your Dock. Launch Application Monitor. Set it to monitor "All Processes, HIerarchically," sorted by, e.g., Real Memory, most-to-least. Leave Activity Monitor open on the desltop — keeping an eye on whether any processes tend to "hang" (become significantly unresponsive — shown in red) even when you're not using Software Update (SU).
Then launch Software Update from the  menu, with the Activity Monitor main window positioned so you can watch it closely. As soon as the SU process shows up, double-click its name to open an "Inspector window" — also positioned for visibility.
Do you notice anything — particularly other processes — that may precede / be involved in the problem?
You may also want to look carefully through system.log &/or console.log entries whose time stamps correspond closely to the problem, as another means toward this objective.
Another really fun idea (ugggh!) might be to "Sample" (⌥-⌘-S) the SU process, starting before it "hangs" or "crashes" — again as a means to observe whuzzup. This will produce an incredibly dense amount of data — but there's a possibility you'll see something that'll provide a hint. There's a macOSXhint that provides an example of doing this.
I'd be interested to hear back about your progress...
    Good luck!
    Dean

  • Windows recognizes the ipod but itunes or updater not

hey folks i need help pretty bad. i do have 30GB ipod photo. when i plug it in to power suplly it's not getting charged, windows recognaizes it as a removable harddisk but when i open i-tunes it doesn't recognizing at all neither ipod updater. when open it i just have the folder icon with an exclamation point and nothing is happening. so i hope you guys can help me out.

Try to put your iPod in Disk Mode, and see whether it got mounted and allow you to do the Restore (open the ipod updater - it will erase all file with your iPod). If no, you have to fix it with a Mac, (hope you can find a friend using a Mac). Again, put it in Disk Mode and plug with a Mac, then do a Restore in Mac version. Once it has being completed, plug it back with your PC, and restore in back to PC version. Don't give up, as I managed to fix few iPods with the same problem

i can't open my ccall log anymore.

You may need to perform a software repair using PC companion. The process will erase all internal memory. You might need to charge your device for about 1-2 hours before so the device has at least 60% battery.
Make sure the device is not connected to computer or laptop and turned off (sometimes you have to press power button and volume up until the device vibrates 3 times or on some devices you have to press the small button near the SIM tray or on the back of the device).
Open PC companion->support zone->phone/tablet software update->repair my phone/tablet blue highlighted.Follow the steps given,do not connect your phone until prompted to press volume down while plugging USB cable. If PC companion does not start the repair process, you might need to run it in compatibility mode with Windows 7 (in some cases XP).

  • Why does a software update always crash my itunes?

Whenever I update my iTunes software, the common result is that iTunes becomes corrupted on my computer.  I cannot repair it using the Programs and Features in the control panel.  I have to do the multi-step uninstall and re-install iTunes.  What a pain!  Why can't Apple fix this????????

  • Why won't iTunes recognize my iPod, ever since I got an external hard drive

I got an external drive and store my library there on the external drive. Ever since, iTunes will not recognize my iPod so I cannot update anything. Any suggestions?? Do I need to store the music on my hard drive and only use the external drive for back up?

If you want to make another drive (direct or portable) on your PC the main music location for iTunes, move all song files there, as well as any future imported music from CDs, here is one method (see the links below):
You will maintain your playlists, ratings, comments, etc. This will only move your music folders location, NOT your iTunes program files. It is my opinion that programs (i.e. – iTunes) work better when installed on your main hard drive. At the very least, it makes it easier to manage all your programs if they are centrally located on one hard drive (the Windows default standard).
See these links for some step-by-step info:
iLounge: Moving your iTunes Library to a New Hard Drive
MacMuse: iTfW: Move iTunes music/Library to new drive
iTunes: Moving your iTunes Music folder
If you are moving the music to an external hard drive or network drive, after the transfer, and to work correctly, the drive must be running prior to your opening iTunes. If not, iTunes will reset the location of your music folder location to the default.

  • Always crash iPod Touch os 4.3

After installing OS 4.3, I am almost unable to use my Ipod Touch 2 gen.
Even with last update, always crash, and restore, when I try to open music: I consider me very lucky is I could access it after 3 crashes.
Apple contacted me, asked me for crash logs, and then.... DISAPPEARED!
It's not the way to work, guys
    Any hint?

No, sorry, I was wrong: my iTouch is the 3rd 3 generation: it's the 64 GB version.
Not jailbroken, just malfunction....only after OS 4.3, before it was perfect.

my ipod tells me my apple id password is wrong even though I just changed the password. I can log on via my desktop, but the ipod continues to tell me that the password is incorrect, so I can't update any apps. when I continue to to try to enter the correct password in it finally freezes the account, and I have to go online via my desktop to fix that problem. I have two apple id's because when my ipod crashed I had to reset it completely. I have never had any problems with this before, and it has been a year since I got my second id, which is linked to the ipod. My first id is used for the cloud on the same device. My wife suggested I reset documentson the cloud for the second id, however, when I try to log on the cloud with my current id, it tells me I have to set up the cloud on that device, but it is already done, but with the old id.

  • Computer AND iTunes don't recognize my iPod touch.  Comp thinks it is a camera.  iTunes won't bring up devices at all.  I've already uninstalled iTunes and QT and reinstalled after problem that happened when I updated iTunes... getting beyond P/Oed!!!

Computer AND iTunes don't recognize my iPod touch.  Comp thinks it is a camera or something.  iTunes won't bring up devices at all.  I've already uninstalled iTunes and QT and reinstalled after problem that happened when I updated iTunes - updated iTunes completely demolished my computer's ability to recognize the sound card and computer had NO sound at all.  I had to uninstall iTunes, QT, AND my sound card and reinstall them all.  Sound worked fine, but now I can't sync my iPod.  Computer recognizes that "something" is hooked up (thinks it might possibly be a camera) and I get that "open with" window.  In "my computer" it shows that there is an "iPod" connected, but it is pictured as a camera.  In iTunes my username is no longer appearing (although account info is there) and NO devices whatsoever get listed.  There is nothing wrong with my USB ports or cable.  And of course Apple won't help anyone unless you pay them to. ... I am getting beyond P/Oed!!!  You pay hundreds for a product and all you get are headaches with their stupid bug infested software and no support at all.
Can anyone out there help me clean up this unbelievable mess Apple and iTunes has created in my computer?
    Thank you.
    Evie

After three completely wasted days trying to figure all of this out I finally got it fixed - on my own - by reading dozens and dozens of rogue posts in indie forums from people that refuse to dish out money to have a company TRY and advise possible fixes on their own glitches.
(here's a novel idea - fix the glitches Apple.  Or - don't send out updates filled with bugs in the first place)
Everything (several applications) had to be uninstalled in a very specific order and then restarted , then it all had to be verified with manual deletions of leftovers, and emptying the recycle bin, then another restart, then iT had to be reinstalled again and the system restarted again, and two more update downloads. Holy!!!
I love my little iPod touch, but I honestly must say, when this kind of thing happens (and it has several times now when I try to deal with iTunes or Apple), it makes me want to flush it down the toilet.

  • I updated to iTunes 10.2.2, and now it doesn't recognize my iPod Touch!

I updated my computer to Snow Leopard, and I was prompted to update iTunes to 10.2.2. Okay, did that. Now iTunes doesn't recognize my iPod whatsoever! But my computer does as a whole: i.e., Aperture automaticaly opens as it usually does when I plug in my iPod.
So this is great. And there's no bug fix; I've googled for the past hour now. Is anyone else having this issue and is there a fix? Because for now, I can't update my iPod at all!
