Wipe Mac OSX and reinstall for resale

The theory is that I want to sell my mac at some point and erase all reference to online banking, passwords, security codes, and any hidden software errors that may exist before I hand it over to the next owner. Bear with me cos I know this is a very common question BUT im quite confused.
Ive read talk of carbon copy programs boot discs etc argh. is it really needed.
Basically this is the stage i can get up to then somone fill in the rest?
Right using Backup from .mac I'll back up all my Home Folder. Im also doing a full drag and drop copy of the home folder to an external hard drive to have a non compressed or archive backup.
Next, do i need to use the disk utility OR do I need to just insert the OSX disc and follow the prompts? Im thinking I want to install the OS on a clean hard drive you see rather than just copying over the other...
Ok thats as far as I have got.

Step 1: Backing up current machine
If you want to retain a backed up version of your machine, then use something like Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper!, etc. to make a bootable backup/clone onto an external, bootable HD. That allows you to use the Migration Assistant to transfer your stuff to a new machine.
Step 2: Preparing the machine for sale
This is the way I prepare old machines that came with OS X installed, which allows them to act just like one from the factory. First, boot with the Apple Hardware Test disk that came with the machine, run the extended tests, and make sure everything passes. Then, boot with the restore disk that came with the machine (holding down the C key until you get a screen), erase and zero the HD. When that's finished, reformat it Mac OS Extended, install the OS 9 drivers (if the machine can boot into OS 9), and then restore the software.
When finished, click on the restart button, holding down the CMD+S keys. This puts the machine into single-user mode and gives you an Unix command line terminal screen. When the text stops scrolling, type in this command and click the return key:
shutdown -h now
This shuts down the computer; the next time it is turned on, the Setup Assistant will appear and the new user will get to personalize it. This also alleviates the necessity of presetting any display parameters, internet and e-mail settings, etc. As long as the monitor can hook up to the machine, the OS will select a usable resolution and the user can use the Display prefpane to suit their needs. They'll also have to run Software Update and bring everything up to the latest version.
BTW, include all the software disks and manuals that came with the machine.

Either redownload it from the Mac App Store or reinstall it from your iLife DVD or if it came pre-installed you can reinstall from the original discs that came with the computer.

Yes. It is meant to upgrade from an older version of OS X but it contains the full install of Snow Leopard. At least the 2 I have do. Does it look like this?

  • Cannot go to the Internet from Mac OSX, and Fedora Core 5

All Windows users (XP, 2000, Vista Beta) can connect to the Internet no problem on WRT54G with Firmware v4.20.6 (may 26, 2005). But odd enough, though getting the right DHCP assigned IP addresses and DNS server address, MacBook Pro (OS 10.4.1) and Fedora Core 5 cannot go to the internet at all using Safari and firefox browsers: the message keeps saying that your computer is not connected to the internet. Tested with BOTH wired and wireless connections, no luck to the internet. So, it's not about the wireless settings and setup. It doesn't work even if I directly connect the CAT5 cable to the router port.
Tested at wireless hotspots, at work where we have Cisco access points, and at a friend's place where there is netgear wireless router, MacBookPro is just working fine connected to the internet.
Any suggestions? Linksys doesn't support Mac and Linux PCs at all?

Thank you very much All (devildance, and Frank).
Seems like it is working fine now...
I reset the router as factory default, and reconfig the wireless setting(disable broadcasting SSID, configure TKIP PSK, and MAC filtering). Directly connected CAT5 cable from the router to my MacBookPro Windows XP. Working fine. Switched to Mac OSX, working fine. But, when I disconnected the LAN, and attempted to connect wireless, I couldn't go to the Internet using Safari and Firefox: keeps saying that your computer is not connected to the Internet.
Still could ping to 4.2.2.2 and 207.232.22.25, but getting errors "could not resolve the host name" when I pinged with the hostname bearshare.com.
Connected the wired CAT5. Working fine. Unplugged and used the wireless, could not get to the internet.
Checked the NICs settings on both LAN ethernet and wireless airport. All seems the same and correct: IP address, subnetmask and gateway address, and NO DNS entry. The same settings, but works on LAN cat5, and not works with wireless. So, for the sake of it, just manually added the DNS server IP addresses and domain names on wireless NIC. And Wala...it is working fine with wireless. Still strange the fact that Ethernet LAN NIC still doesn't have any DNS entries and working fine, but required DNS entries on wireless NIC.
For Fedora Core, could ping and resolve names without changing any settings. But when going to the Internet, got the error saying "comcast doesn't support this platform/OS" and another error "Welcome to Comcast High speed Internet....registration currently unavailable" when attempting to go any websites. Notieced that we pinging cnn.com, bearshare.com, or any websites, got ping reply from the same IP address which appears to be one of the comcast DNS server IP, 68.87.64.132.
So, I think it is a comcast issue not supporting Linux or something else which I would need to call to Comcast about...
But, thanks...looks like I can go to the Internet on Mac OSX, and Fedora core now with Linksys WRT54G. Thanks so much guys for all the suggestions....

Thanks, while it worked on yours it doesn't work on mine, any other ideas?
Are you holding down the "d" key, all by itself, just after the system shuts down for a restart?
And how long did you hold it down?
I held mine down for about 40-50 seconds. Then I lookat at my routers WAN light and it was flickering so I let up on the d key.
If that does not work then maybe there is something wrong with your MBP. Is that the reason you want to run this test, something isn't right with your unit?

  • How can I dual-boot Mac OSX and Linux Mint?

Hey guys, I was wondering if it is possible to dual-boot both OS's similar to OS X and Windows 7/8...but first I'm wondering if it will void my MacBook Air Warranty (w/ AppleCare) as ultimately it wouldn't be worth it then!
    Thanks!

Which CD are you trying to use?
Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) originally came on DVD.
A media exchange program initially was available:

So maybe you did an exchange for CDs?

  • Selling Mac OSX and iLife Restore Discs?

Hi. I would like an expert opinion from an apple representative on this matter because i really need an accurate answer. OK basically my college just got 60 iMacs which are awesome and me and two mates are allowed to have the restore discs for Mac OSX and iLife because they dont need them. This is we reckon we could make about £4000 selling them which would be great but we are not sure if it is legal to do this and we dont want to break the law.
Also im sorry if this has been posted in the wrong area of this forum, i couldn't seem to find an accurate forum title for this issue.
    Thanks

You aren't going to get an Apple Representative here, this is a user to user forum. All the people that post are volunteer end users just like yourself.

I suggest you read the SLA on OS X, while it may (I'm not saying it is or isn't) be legal to sell them they are pretty worthless as the discs are specific to the hardware that they shipped with. For example lets say your college bought all Mid 2010 21.5 iMac's with i3 processors. Unless you find a buyer with identical (and I MEAN IDENTICAL!!!) specifications the discs won't work on the buyers machine and are therefore of no value. In addition selling them is very short sighted, at some point those machine may need to be restored with the original OS and iLife applications then what do you do?
IMHO it's a nice idea to try and earn some additional revenue for your college (I'm assuming that's the intent) however it's short sighted and overall a bad idea.

    Try the following steps:
    1. Go to Microsoft website to fix install and Unistall problems. Click "Run now" from Fix it to remove all iTunes & related installer files:
    http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall
Be aware that Windows Installer CleanUp Utility will not remove the actual program from your computer. However, it will remove the installation files so that you can start the installation, upgrade, or uninstall over.
    2. You should remove all instances of iTunes and the rest of the components listed below:
it may be necessary to remove all traces of iTunes, QuickTime, and related software components from your computer before reinstalling iTunes.
Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order:
    iTunes
    QuickTime
    Apple Software Update
    Apple Mobile Device Support
    Bonjour
Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
Follow the instructions from Apple article listed here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923 to remove all components
