Wipe MacBook and Reinstall Lion

Hi all-
My brother has sold his MacBook pro on ebay and has asked me to wipe the drive clean and reinstall Lion for him.
I have a copy on the Lion Installer on a UBS stick, but when I ran it it just reinstalls the system and didn't wipe the disc first.
There must be a way to run Disc Utility first and then the use the installer, but I just need someone to confirm how to do it before i try!
The MacBook finished its auction yesterday so there is some urgency in getting this done so any help is much appreciated!
Thanks!
Andy

Take a look at Thomas Reed's How to prepare your Mac for sale.
You must reinstall the version of OS X that shipped with the machine, not a version that has been purchased with an existing Apple ID.

  • I paid for lion, I want to boot my macbook, for reinstalling lion, I have to pay again?

I paid for mac os x lion once, I have to reboot my macbook and reinstall lion again. I have to pay again for reinstalling lion?

No you should not need to pay again, as Chrisp250 points out if you use the same account you purchased it with.
And as tmac suggests, this time make a boot disk/backup copy of Mac OS X Lion.  Here is a pointer to simple instructions on how you do that:

I just did this yesterday, and it worked very well.

A 2008 Mac won't have originally shipped with Lion. You need to install 10.6.8 on the computer, log into the Mac App Store with the Apple ID you used to purchase Mountain Lion, click on the Purchases tab, and download it.

You do realise that wiping the disk means that everything on the disk is erased. Everything. Photos, music, emails, ...
So the first piece of advice is to make sure you have a back up of everything.
You need the OS disk to reintsall the operating system. You will use that disk first to erase the drive, then to reinstall the OS.
Here's the link for the US.  http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
As for MS Office, you will need the original disk that it came on to reinstall it.

  • Trying to erase and reinstall Lion without Apple ID

A while back I bought a MacBook Pro from a friend. It came with a Lion Installation Disk.
I've tried erasing the harddrive, and reinstalling Lion, but now im being prompted to enter the Apple ID that purchased Lion.
Since my friend bought the computer along with Lion using his Apple ID, how do I reset and install Lion without having to enter his Apple ID?
    Any help is appreciated.

The important question is, did this machine come with lion preinstalled or was it purchased from the app store?
If it came preinstalled, your friend needs to call apple to transfer the license for the OS to you. If he purchased Lion, the license is not transferable and you will need the original install disks, wipe the drive, install the original OS, and then purchase Lion with your own Apple ID.
FWIW, Lion did not come on a disk.

  • How to Backup your HD and Reinstall Lion

    Hello to all,
I'm a Student of Informatic Engineering studiying at UCAB in Venezuela.
I have a Macbook Pro 13" late 2011 and needed of windows and ubuntu because some projects at University needed to be developed in those OS. I did the Bootcamp to add Windows to my MacBook Pro, and did an extra partition to the Macintosh HD to install the Ubuntu. All Sucess and finished the semester. Now i dont need these OS no more because i won an Acer and now i have Windows and Ubuntu in that laptop so i want my Mac only with OSX. Besides now the OSX is startint to act funny, so i think its about the triple partition (and i dont like my apps in OSX closing for no reason, and the system is getting a bit slow).
    So, my question is:
1.- How do i Backup my Macintosh HD so i dont lose all my installed apps and data.
2.- Can i use Time Machine on any External Hard Drive?
3.- How do i clear all my hd so its like brand new, and Reinstall Lion (because when i bought the Mac it didnt came with an OS CD)
Thanks for any help you may bring me..
I'm Sorry for any misspelled word, English is not my main Language.

HD: 750 GB (Macintosh HD: 550 GB, Bootcamp: 160GB, Ubuntu: 40GB)
    Graphics: Intel HD 3000

    1. Use Time Machine - it's on your Mac.
    2. Yes - if the external has enough space.
    3. After you back up, use the steps described in this Macworld article to make a clean install of OS X. Basically you reboot while holding down the command and R keys and proceed from there.

  • What is the best way to reformat my macbook and reinstall?

I run a Macbook on OS X Lion which I installed via the app store. How can I reformat my Macbook and reinstall OS X Lion without the disc? Secondly, How can I then upload my TimeMachine backup so it was the same as before?
Will this repair all disc permissions and ensure maximum performance from my computer?

You must create your Lion install disk, before.  Read here how you can:

  • What's the best way to erase and reinstall Lion?

I'm a little confused by the various posts I've read about erasing and reinstaling lion.
My MBP is about 4 years old.  I upgraded to lion last summer and it never worked great, but over the last 3-6 months its been dragging.  I want to start fresh.  I've uploaded all of my personal files to a sky drive and then copied all of my extremely irreplaceable photos to two other hard drives.  Now I'm just fuzzy about my next step.
I've read I need to make a boot disk, or a thumb drive or I can do it right from my system.  I don't care which way or what I need, but I want it fresh with no chance of curroption.
Thanks for any and all direction.
    Josh

While we all have MacBooks in this forum most of us don’t run Lion. There's a Lion Support Community where everybody has Lion. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer. https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.7_lion

  • Problem earsing HD and reinstalling Lion

    Hi,
I've tried to earse my HD and reinstall lion,
pressed command-R on startup and in disk-utility tried to earse.
It bring an error: "Couldn't unmount disk".
Then I've earsed the partition it had successfuly and tried to install Lion.
but when I need to choose HD, the one from before is marked as locked.
I tried to set a partition in the HD and the same error accures: "Couldn't unmount disk".
    Help please,
    Thanks!

I believe your problem is that you are trying to use the copy of Disk Utilities that is on your Macbook Pro's harddrive to erase the same harddrive.  You cannot do that.  You have to use either the original CD of your OS to boot from and use the copy of Disk Utilities on that or you can boot from an external harddrive that contains a bootable copy of your current OS and use the copy of Disk Utility from there.
    Hope this helps

  • Erase hard drive and reinstall Lion

    Hello Everybody,
Is there a straightforward way to erase the hard drive of my imac and reinstall Lion. I have purchased the mac from my friend but I believe the HD hasn't been completely wiped as I can still see some of his files.
OSX Lion was purchased and installed but is there a way to completely delete the HD, reinstall Lion and start with fresh computer?
    Thanks!

I'm in the same boat but a slightly different twist. It appears, from talking to Apple support, that MobileMe corrupted some of my data on my iMac. Everything is backed up. It appears that some of the preferences have been corrupted because my scrolling doesn't work the way I set it. MobileMe propagated this corruption over to my Macbook Pro but I'm living with it right now. I turned MobileMe off on my iPad2 and my iPhone. I'll go and correct the issue but then the incorrect will turn itself back on. Even repairing permissions fixed stuff and they came back later. I chose to reinstall Lion. I booted CTRL+R, chose ERASE with the correct Mac format then double checked everything before reinstalling Lion. NO LUCK. Lion comes back but like the person above said, there are files still there so ERASE doesn't ERASE EVERYTHING. I still have issues with my preferences. I've installed the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant and have it loaded on a 4gb thumb drive. Now what I want to do is erase...blotto...flatline...zap... you name it, I want it GONE. Then I want to format and reinstall Lion from a totally naked disk drive. Anyone have any ideas?  Thanks very much. It was right here that I found out about the Recovery Assistant!

  • How can I format my primary HD and reinstall Lion?

So my iMac has been running very slowly lately, and I've had some tech issues (see the fruitless help thread at http://hintsforums.macworld.com/showthread.php?p=634569), so I'm tempted to just wipe my hard drive clean and reinstall Lion.
I have a backup HD, so I should have sufficient hardware to do this.  I just have a couple questions about the mechanics:
    1. How do I format my primary hard drive?  I assume this is straightforward.
    2. Is it possible to reinstall Lion without an install CD?  I downloaded Lion off the App Store, and I'd hate to think that because of that I'm stuck with the installation I have.
Any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks!

OS X Lion: About Lion Recovery
    Summary
OS X Lion includes a new feature called Lion Recovery that includes all of the tools you need to reinstall Lion, repair your disk, and even restore from a Time Machine backup without the need for optical discs.
And buried in the link is also this:
the storage device to use the GUID partition scheme and the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format, which are required to install Lion
Formating a disk is done with Disk Utility.

  • Step by step instructions to wipe clean and reinstall

Hello. I am hoping somewhere on here, there will be someone who can direct me to step-by-step instructions to wipe clean and reinstall operating system.
iMac g4 (the dome model, which I still love). 7 years old. 10.2 operating system. It has been crashing repeatedly and I paid for diagnostics, they propose wiping clean and reinstalling, and I really need to do this myself and not pay for it.
Pretty please, I hope you can direct me. Thanks!
    Amy

    Amy,
Before going the *nuke route*, please post who did the diagnostics. Was it a "Genius" at an Apple Retail Store or a third party Mac Reseller?
What is the condition of the RAM (total)..... how much free space on the Hard Drive .... at what point in time did it start to crash ..... did it start after downloading some software .... have you tried Repairing Permissions .... do you run a maintenance Utility like Macaroni to clean up the OSX .... have you tried to run Repair Disk (HD) using the original Install disc of Jaguar .... did you ever update to the latest version of 10.2.8 ...... are you trying to access websites that do not support Jag?
As they use to say in Dragnet ....... "just give us the facts".

  • I have a mac book pro with Boot Camp that also runs windows.  I upgraded to Lion and somehow it crashes the mac side peridoically.  I am told I need to "clean" it and reinstall lion using the recovery drive.  will that delete the windows partition too??

I have a mac book pro with Boot Camp that also runs windows.  I upgraded to Lion and now the mac side crashes/freezes periodically, especially iphoto.  I am told by the genius' that I probably need to "clean" it and reinstall lion using the "recovery drive" which resets everything back to default and reinstalls the lion operating system.  My question is will this also delete the "windows" partition drive and all that data too.  If so that will be a huge pain in the ___ to back up and reinstall boot camp and windows. I want to shoot the lion.

There is no system like Acronis for the Mac platform. You can try using the buiilt in Disk Utility to create an Image of the complete Mac drive but I have found that this does not work very well as on tryiing to restore it gives errors sometimes.
You can use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to create a bootable Clone of your system partition. But that is only for the System partition and not the complete drive.
If you use Boot Camp to install Windows on your Mac neither of those two programs will clone the Windows side.
Neither will Disk utility as Mac's can not create or write to a NTFS partition. So some other program is need for that.

  • How do I get out of kernel panic?  kernel panic upon boot.  I did that hard drive cleanup and reinstalled Lion.  What about memory?  Anyone think I need to upgrade my memory?  I have 8gig.

I get kernel paic upon boot.  I did that hard drive cleanup and reinstalled Lion.  What about memory?  Anyone think I need to upgrade my memory?  I have 8 G of upgraded RAM. (20 inch iMac core 2 duo)

If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.
If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
