Wipe macbook

I'm trying to wipe a Macbook pro running 10.6.8, and using Command R on start up is not working. Any suggestions?

You cannot use Command+R with Mac OS X 10.6...you must use the installation disk with 10.6 and restart holding the C key so you boot from the DVD.

  • Wipe Macbook Pro keep software

    Hi there,
I want to wipe my macbook back to factory settings as I am passing it along to a friend, however I have logic 9 and microsoft office on the computer which I wish to keep. How can I go about erasing all my data on the hard drive but retain logic and MS Office to pass along to him?
    Many Thanks

I assume you would save them someplace.
I also assume that it would depend on how you acquired them (download or DVD).
Ask the developer....they may be able to give you better information.

  • How to wipe MacBook Pro without install disk

I bought a new MacBook Pro that did not come with an installation disk.  It came fully loaded brand new.  I then was involved with an Internet Microsoft scam and need to delete all files and "start over" - I can not find a way to wipe my hard drive without the install disk.  Can I delete my files and start over?

They don't come with install disks (DVD). Boot to the Mountain Lion Recovery Disk. Hold down the command-r keys. It helps when your profile shows the operating system you are running on the MacBook Pro. iOS 6.1.3 is an OS for iPhone, iPad not MBP.

  • Wipe macbook pro clean

i've been told it's a good idea to wipe my macbook pro clean (restore to factory) before upgrading from snow leopard to yosemite. seems it might prevent problems, provide a fresh start. i'm all backed up. what's next? opinions about doing it at all?

I'll tell you that have your data backed up and simply install Yosemite without erasing the drive.  There is no point to it.
Understand that there may be some applications (PPC based) that will not work with Yosemite, so be prepared for a little house cleaning and updating.
    Ciao.

  • How to wipe macbook for resale without disc

I have a late 2009 macbook Pro and I can't seem to find the disc.  I recently purchased a new Macbook so I need to know how I can wipe the old one for resale without the disc?  Or how I can get a disc to do it?

Call 1-800-676-2775.  Pay a shipping/handling fee to get replacement disks.  Technically you need to give the original disks, which have all main and "secondary" softeare, plus a hardware test.
Or you can buy an SL disk for $19 that has OSX but no secondary programs like iDVD.

  • How to wipe Macbook pro HD for selling (late 2012) (did not come with instal Disk)

I own a late 2012 macbook pro and looking to sell it
It is a 750 GB HD i7 8 GB ram 13.3 inch. 10.9.1 Maverick OSX
When i started it up (Don't know what version at the time) it was already preinstalled and didn't have a Software disc. So i'm searching through old post and they all say i must have a disc to reinstall the software disc (I never had one) after Wiping the HD.
Question is... Can i just wipe the HD and throw it in the box along with everything else it came with and put it on ebay? I don't care for saving files as there is barely anything on it.

  • Wipe macbook air 2010 to sell.

I am selling my daughter's MacBook Air 2010 and need to wipe it clean, de-identify it, or whatever needs to be done.  I have another MS Office license I can reload on it afterwards, but I no longer have the any of the start up software/usb/manual etc.  How do I do this, and will the operating system be lost?

Before you sell or give away your computer, in addition to the steps mentioned in this support article, take these steps:
    1. Run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test. The buyer will do this (or he should), and you don't want to be surprised by the results.
    2. Reset the PRAM and the SMC, which might contain personal information.
    3. If you set a firmware password, remove it by running Firmware Password Utility in Recovery mode.
    4. If you activated FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, turn it off.
    5. If you use Boot Camp, the partition must be deleted.
    6. If you created any other data partitions on the internal drive, remove them in Disk Utility.
    7. If the machine has an internal hard drive, erase the one remaining data partition with the option to zero out data. An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You can't legally or practically transfer any software downloaded from the Mac App Store to the new owner of the machine, even if it was free. That includes OS X, so if you upgraded to OS X 10.7 or later, you must reinstall an older OS, either from the installation media, if applicable, or by starting up in Internet Recovery mode (option-command-R at the startup chime.) If you installed from physical media, deliver those to the new owner.
If you're selling the machine, or donating it in working order, and it originally shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, then you have the option of installing either from the discs that came with it or from a retail Snow Leopard disc (which you must then transfer to the buyer.) The buyer should understand that if he doesn't get the original discs from you, he won't get the bundled iLife applications or the Apple Hardware Test. Replacements for the original discs can be ordered from Apple.
The new owner will have to redownload any software that came from the App Store, including OS X upgrades, under his or her Apple ID. If you ever updated the bundled iLife applications (Garage Band, iMovie, and iPhoto) through the App Store, you can't transfer those either. The buyer will have to purchase them.
Remove the machine from your list of registered products. If it's still covered by an AppleCare Protection Plan, transfer the coverage to the new owner by following the instructions in the AppleCare Terms and Conditions (under the heading "Transfer of Plan.")

  • Wipe MacBook and Reinstall Lion

    Hi all-
My brother has sold his MacBook pro on ebay and has asked me to wipe the drive clean and reinstall Lion for him.
I have a copy on the Lion Installer on a UBS stick, but when I ran it it just reinstalls the system and didn't wipe the disc first.
There must be a way to run Disc Utility first and then the use the installer, but I just need someone to confirm how to do it before i try!
The MacBook finished its auction yesterday so there is some urgency in getting this done so any help is much appreciated!
    Thanks!
    Andy

Take a look at Thomas Reed's How to prepare your Mac for sale.
You must reinstall the version of OS X that shipped with the machine, not a version that has been purchased with an existing Apple ID.

  • Migrate from macbook to iPad 3

wife has macbook white c2d (wonderful machine still working great) 10.7.3
probably will now use her new iPad 3 as primary(when it arrives)
wish to sell her macbook or give to relative
    we have
clone of her hard drive with superduper
    itunes match
    photostream
    icloud
iPhone 4s  in which it is synced to her macbook backed up to iCloud
wish to wipe macbook before i sell, give
will she have to sync to this macbook?
what happens to her syncing with her iPhone 4s
can she just sign in with her apple ID when she gets her iPad 3
    need step by step
i don't want to mess her machine up
don't want to sync to this macbook
    thanks for any help

she really doesn't print, i do that usually if it needs to be printed she emails it to me
uses youtube for video or netflix only
she does audiobooks purchased from iTunes
but aren't they part of iCloud??
i do like the dropbox option, we have an account
i think because she is a light duty user this will work
does she have to sync to this macbook? or just sign in with our itunes apple ID???
so when i turn this on  it should do some initialization process
i'm afraid if she syncs this to the macbook and it dies then a big mess
what would be a strategy to give this ipad 3 the most functionality with the cloud and her purchases from iTunes?
i would think this will be coming up more and more.
and why would she need a mac to "maintain" her itunes match
she only buys from itunes, and she can buy directly from itunes
thank you all for your insights

  • Macbook Pro remote desktop unable to connect to my office PC. Genius Bar told me the only solution was to wipe my Mac. Really??

I work remotely using my Macbook Pro (OS X 10.5.8) to connect to my office PC. I have always had issues using my "computer name" with the RDC but have no problem when using the IP address. Two weeks ago my company upgraded their server and ever since I have been unable to access the server. My coworkers (who use Macs) are not having the same problems as me. My IT guy was able to connect using my Mac, his security clearance and IP address. However, I no longer have the option of using the IP address to log in - per my IT guy. My IT guy is a PC guy so he suggested that I take my computer to Apple to see whats blocking me.
I met with Apple support at the Genius bar yesterday and was told basically it could be a problem with my computer and I needed to wipe it clean and start over. This was the proposed solution to the problem but the Mac guy I spoke with didn't seem completely sure this would solve / is the cause of the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions for figuring out what the root problem is prior to me wiping my Mac? Has anyone had issues working with remote desktop connection from their Mac connecting to a PC?
    I appreciate any help possible!

There are no songs on your iPod, right (since it was restored)?
Make sure the software on your computer is up to date...
    iTunes
    iPod Updater
    Update iPod's Software
Also, try connecting the iPod via a different USB port.
You may want to try putting the iPod in Disk Mode prior to connecting it and see if you are able to restore it (while it is in Disk Mode)...
    Putting iPod into Disk Mode
Finally, if you can't get the iPod to restore, then try connecting it and opening My Computer. Does the iPod show up in My Computer? Try right clicking it and going to Format. Does anything happen?

iTunes is a mess! It couldn't find it's own libraries and I was forced to create a new one. Now I don't know where my music is or if any's missing.

    How crap is that?
    It's not crap at all.
It's not that simple. For example, I've 3500 songs on my MacBook but don't want them all on my phone, so I have to manually select each song again???
There has to be a solution.
Why not simply make a playlist with the songs you want on the iPhone?
and maintain a current backup of your computer.

  • How do I return my mid 2011 MacBook Air to Factory Specifications? Can I use the built in Lion recovery and wipe my data from the hard disk by reformatting it?

I want to trade in my old mid 2011 MacBook Air for a new MacBook Pro. After I have transferred my data to the new MacBook Pro, how do I reformat the hard disk to wipe all my data and return it to Factory specifications? Will the built in Lion recovery allow me to do this? I am currently running OS X Yosemite. Has the upgrade to Yosemite damaged or removed the original Lion recovery partition?

  • How to do a fresh install of Mountain Lion after clean wipe of MacBook Pro Early 2008 version?

    Hey everyone,
The following are my computer specs:
    MacBook Pro
    15-inch, Early 2008
    Hardware
    Overview
    Processor
2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory
    4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    L2 Cache
    6 MB
    Graphics
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 512 MB
    Software
    Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53)
mid 2008 - I got this laptop at the online Apple Store, configured to my specs. It came with Leopard.
mid 2009 - I bought a Snow Leopard disk from the Apple Store and upgraded the OS directly over Leopard, with all my data still there.
mid 2011 - I purchased the Lion download online from the Mac App Store and upgraded the OS again, directly over Snow Leopard, with all my data still there.
mid 2012 - Now I want to upgrade to Mountain Lion. I have already purchased the Mountain Lion download online from the Mac App Store and downloaded it to my computer. Have also copied (i guess) all my files, bookmarks, iTunes library on to an external HD.
But I haven't installed it yet because I want to first clean wipe my computer and restore it to factory settings, to the way it was when I first got it with Leopard, because its extremely slow. Doesn't even feel like that Mac I got..
Now my problem is - I don't have the Leopard CDs that came with it, nor the iWork or iLife ones which I bought with, or the Snow Leopard one which I got later.
I also don't see Apple offering the Lion download on the App Store anymore..so, can anyone please help me out with how I can do this?
Another thing I want to mention is - I had my display replaced at the Apple Store late 2011 because of that defect which apparenly affected many MacBook Pros from that period.
So was wondering if there might be any hardware issues if I downgraded all the way down to Leopard? Because at the time of the replacement, the laptop was running Lion.
    Any help is great, thanks!

    1) You don't see Apple offering Lion for download from the app store anymore because you already downloaded it to your computer. Hold down the option key then click on purchases and it should appear. I don't know why they hide it after you bought it?
         Ref: http://osxdaily.com/2011/08/02/re-download-mac-os-x-lion-from-app-store/
    2) Don't install Lion right after you download it from the app store! Make a copy and put it in a different directory first! I use this tutorial to make a bootable usb and a dvd for backup just in case. This will give you the "clean" install you are looking for.
