Wipe out Internal Mac Book Pro hard drive

I need help on how to wipe out my internal Mac Book Pro hard drive. I used the Mac Office demo and now the demos are no longer usable. How can I wipe out the mac book pro hard drive? Should I contact my Apple Care service center for assistance, since I am paying for that service and they can walk me through the process? I want to clear out to what it was like when I first got the lappy. Help, anyone? Thanks in advance.

Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with the OS X installation. Once OS X has been installed and is running you can then run the installer for the pre-bundled software.

  • How do i move my photos from external hard drive to my local mac book pro hard drive?

I have my iphoto files on an external hard drive.  I need to move them to my local Mac Book Pro Hard drive and I want to do it accurately.  Anyone have any advice?

    THanks Niel.
In typical "me" fashion I asked the question and then did the leg work and researched the answer (instead of doing the research first!).  I learned exactly what you have posted here.  It sounds REALLY simple.  Thanks!

  • Can i transfer my mac book pro hard drive to mac book air

  • Mac book pro hard drive privacy

    Hi everyone
I have a question regarding a hard drive replacement. I have a 2007 mac book pro and I may need the get the hard drive replaced. As someone who does not really know/understand the engineering behind computers, I'm not quite sure what this will entail.
My problem is that I am a very private person and I worry about a stranger seeing what is on my computer. I have things such as photos of myself in my underwear, embarrassing medical google searches, and undergraduate essays that I would prefer a stranger not see. Will whoever is replacing my hard drive be looking at this stuff? I put the underwear photos on a flash drive and deleted them using "Secure Empty Trash" will the person doing my hard drive still see them? What about everything else?
I apologize if this has been asked, but I've done some searching and haven't found my exact question. I'm just very worried about this! I'd like to know if there is anything I can do about this or if I am just being paranoid. There is really nothing noteworthy on my laptop, I'm just a private person.
Thank you so much for your help!

Wow! Thanks for all your help guys. I just spoke with the repair place and they went ahead and started replacing the drive without my go ahead . They waived a $50 fee at least.
Since I'm a practically broke twentysomething I don't really have any finanical info on the laptop besides some parking ticket receipts. I guess all I can do now is hope they don't snoop. I did clear my firefox cache and all that stuff beforehand, so hopefully they won't see anything. I was hoping to be able to take her home and back her up/delete more things before they did this, but I guess my hard drive started failing.
Man, it feels like I'm getting my car repaired all over again. I have no idea if there really is something wrong or if I just reek of naivity. I'm just going to choose this time to trust the repair place. I'm glad to know that snooping through my info isn't neccessary for the repair though.
Once again, thanks for all your help! (Can all the answers be correct? I want to you give all credit if possible. I'm new to this forum)

  • My Mac book pro hard drive died, how do I load a new OS onto my new hard drive?

I Have a friend trying to work on the computer but he is more of a PC guy. I have no backup discs and the hard drive was shot. I ordered a new OS (mountain lion?) and he said he could put it on the new hard drive. Problem is it's a downloadable OS. I guess apple doesn't put them on discs. Hopefully I'm overlooking something please help.

That model came with a disc to install OS X. Hopefully you've kept it. Otherwise you need to buy a Snow Leopard disc.
Alternatively, if you have access to another mac, you can download Mavericks for free from the App Store, follow these instructions, and then boot from the flash drive or DVD you just made by holding down the Alt key when booting up.
If you're not tech savvy or you feel uncomfortable making boot discs, your best bet would be to buy the Snow Leopard disc for $20 from the Apple Store.

  • Mac book pro hard drive

I have a MacBook Pro 2.4 GHZ Core Duo (Late 08 edition). How big of a hard drive can I install into it and how much memory can also put in it?
    Thanks.

No limit on hard drive size, as long as it is a laptop hard drive.  Up to 8GB on memory.

  • Mac Book Pro hard drive upgrade, prices?

Does anyone know how much im looking at for apple to upgrade the hard drive in my MBP from 500 gb to 1tb. i have only had the MBP 2 month but need more space

    Hi Joseph,
Why not give the Apple Store a call? Also, it's very easy to upgrade the new MBP's HD yourself. Look in your owners manual or check out ifixit, powerbookmedic, macsales, youtube, etc.

  • Mac book pro hard drive getting full

I am about 90 % full on my hard drive. I have a time machine back up and a drive for saving photos both 1 TB. I have purchased a new 2TB drive. would it be to my advantage to install any new apps to the new hard drive are move some things over to it some I Movies  are apps I do not use much. I assume the mac can acess them from the other drive for use.

Programs should remain on the boot drive because they have support files they expect to be in certain places,
Space hogging user files transferred to the storage drive, especially Movies is a really big hog.
Download this free great program that will help you visualize where all your hard drive space is going.
    http://grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net/#download
Remember, TimeMachine is a rotating image backup of your boot drive only, so you need to make another hardware backup of your storage drive, as you need to maintain TWO hardware backups of your data at all times.

  • 'Optical out' audio drop out on Mac Book Pro

    This is driving me INSANE!
First of all I'll give you my mac book pro details:
    Mid/late 2010 MBP 2.66 i7 with 8GB RAM, on snow leopard 10.6.8
Here's the problem. Basically, my audio keeps dropping out. Upon a bit of research I can see the output device is switching from 'internal speakers - built in' to 'digital out - optical digital-out port'. I didn't even know my mac book pro had an optical digital output, as it doesn't appear there is one. However there's a red light that goes off and on, or sometimes flashes, more or less in unison with the drop outs and the switching of the output device. This also shows as when I try to adjust the volume, it doesn't let me and shows the sign with a line through it, as if I was using an external soundcard. It is incredibly frustrating as I can't do simple things such as watch a youtube video or play music on itunes.
Sometimes if I go from not using my mac, e.g. over night, then open it up and play itunes it will be fine. However when I open safari and start browsing or playing things via youtube the problem does seem to get worst. It also seems to cause my mac to freeze up a bit, I'm guessing as it's trying to switch devices.
I don't really know what to do, searching online hasn't really yielded anything useful.
    Thanks, Christian.

  • 500 GB Mac Book Pro Hard Disk?

    Hi all,
does anyone know which kind (manufacturer, ...) of 500 GB hard drive Apple uses in its 17" Macbook Pros?
    Many thanks,
    Michael

Correct. Before you install the OS, be sure to use Disk Utility (accessed via the Utilities menu when booted from the DVD) to format the drive with a single GUID partition and Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format.
You want the Seagate Momentus 7200.4, model ST9500420AS (the one without the G on the end).
If you like, you can get an external enclosure for the 320 GB drive you'll be removing, and use it as an external drive. If you go that route, instead of the above procedure, put the new drive in the enclosure, format/partition it as above, then use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your current drive onto the new one. Test boot from the external drive, and if everything works, then physically swap the drives.
