Wiping an old windows partition and reformatting it for an OS X backup?

I recently installed a new SSD on my 2008 macbook, and the old hard drive contained a Windows partition. Since Windows doesn't run off of a USB HD, i really have no use for it, and I would like to instead use the partition for a backup for my main mac OS. Is it possible to reformat this partition so it will be compatible with Mac OS X? Thanks!

Yes. Use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

  • HT5622 I've changed my Apple ID email and its all verified ok but on my iPhone 5 every time I go to update an App or buy an App it comes up with my old Apple ID and asks me for a password. Why doesn't it have my new ID because on Apple ID link it does?

I've changed my Apple ID password and when I go to the Apple ID link the changes have been emailed and are all verified. However, when I try to do something with an App or iTunes  etc on my iPhone 5 it still comes up with my old Apple ID and asks me for the password and I don't have the option to overtyped the Sppld ID section with the new email I've set. I can't update Apps or buy Apps because of this. Any ideas?
    Thanks

Sign out and back into your apple id from Settings>iTunes and App stores>(Your apple ID)>Sign Out and then sign in again with the new address. Close app store from running in the background (or restart the phone if your unsure how to do this). If when trying to update any apps they are still asking for the old apple ID, delete and re-install those apps.

  • How can I quickly view pdf files like I can do with Windows Picture and Fax viewer for jpg files?

How can I quickly view pdf files like I can do with Windows Picture and Fax viewer for jpg files? I need to look at several thousand PDF files. It takes too long to open each one individually. The only thing I could think of is combining them into large groups and then using the Navigation index. But I like the way windows Picture and Fax Viewer does it because you can keep the files separate. Combining PDFs causes loss of individual file names. That would be a problem since I do need to have the individual file names.

Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is a DLL and is started via a rundll32.exe call and can't be set as an application to handle images in Firefox 3 and later versions.
Try to set Windows Picture and Fax Viewer as the default viewer in Windows, then it should be listed automatically in the Mozilla Firefox Browse dialog.

Anyone???

I don't have any apple products personally, this is for work to use Photo Stream so when Superintendents & Project Managers take pictures of their construction site, I am able to have those images immediately.

You can not create an iCloud account using a PC, you will need an Apple product. Once the account exists you can logon to it from a PC.

  • Accessing files on boot camp windows partition and Mac OSx partition

Before I install Windows 7 64 bit on my iMac using Apple's instruction manual, I have a question. The manual states:
*+FAT—Provides better compatibility, allowing you to read and write files on the Windows volume from Mac OS X. This partition must be 32 GB or smaller.+*
*+If you’re installing Windows Vista or Windows 7, the Windows partition must use the NTFS format.+*
I can read, but I want to be sure I understand these two statements as they relate to each other. Because the Windows 7 partition must be NTFS format, does this mean that there is no way to read, write or copy files from one partition to the other, no matter what the partition size is?
If that is the case, I assume the best way to move files from one partition to the other would be to use a flash drive or is that also not possible due to the file format on the flash drive? I also have an external hard drive used for time machine. Any way to use that?
How will I move files from one partition to the other? And yes, I really want to do this.

    Hi Stefan --
Could you explain how using an external HD helps? If I wanted to use an external HD for read/write access from both Snow Leopard and Windows (XP and/or 7), would it need to be in a particular format? (No partitions - this would be a new, empty drive.) If, for example, I formatted it as NTFS, could OSX write to it if it were external?
Since I don't have/use files that are bigger than 4GB in size I am able to use FAT32 as file system on the mentioned external harddisk and flash drives.
Whether I use the harddisk or a flash drive for file transport depends for me on the amount of files I have to move.
Up to 8GB of files I move with a flash drive, everything above that I use the harddisk.

  • Fragmented Windows partition and now I can't get that memory back.

I was removing the windows partition off of my MacBook Pro, but Boot Camp Assistant randomly closed, so I had assumed that it had finished with deleting the partition, and that all of my memory has returned just for OS X. But I still realized that half of my hard drive space was gone. I went to disk utility, and when I try to partition OS X to the full 500 GB, but it could not verify the file system verification failed. So Now when I try and install windows again, It tells me that I can only use 15 GB out of 250 GB, even though I have a 500 GB hard drive. Any methods to fix this?

Unforunately, not that I know of.

I have had windows XP fully working on here before. However, I tried to extend the amount of GB I gave the windwos partition obviously there corrupting the partition so now I can no longer loads windows up. So I want to delete the partition and reinstall.
Yeah you messed up your system. You can't expand, shrink or in any other way do anything to the Windows partition as that will cause it to become non usable and then can't be removed and put back into the Mac partition.
Your only option now is to save all your files, with Time Machine or just copying them to an external drive, and Wipe/Erase/Re-Partition the complete drive and reinstall OS X Snow Leopard.

  • Is a windows partition on Mac that has regular time capsule backup also backed up?

I am setting up boot camp w/ parallels desktop, and I wonder if this windows partition on my Macbook Pro will be part of the automatic time capsule backup?  Or do I have to do something specific to ensure this windows partition is also backed up?

If you are asking about the Time Machine backup application.....Time Machine cannot backup Boot Camp, if you are running that on your Mac, or for that matter....a Windows partitiioned drive.
If you want to backup these files, you will need to use a Windows backup application. The simplest set up would have Boot Camp backing up to a separate hard drive connected to your Mac.
It is possible to have Boot Camp back up to the Time Capsule, but things can get mighty complicated this way, and I would not recommend this for most users.
I had some success a few years ago backing up the Windows files to a Time Capsule using an application called Genie Timeline Pro, which uses a similar concept to Time Machine, so you might want to give that a look if you want to try this.

I have not backed up Windows files in a few years, since I only use Macs now, so you might want to wait to see if other users will post with some current recommendations.

  • Windows 10 and Drivers/BIOS for HP Pavilion DV6 7112HE Entertainment Notebook

Hello, I recently updated to Windows 10. I wanted to know if HP is working with Intel on releasing new drivers? Also, how about a Windows 10 BIOS update for my laptop? I do not have the option to revert back to my previous OS, it would be nice if anyone can shed light on this issue.

That is where you will find a updated driver from the hardware manfacture site not from HP at this point in time. UE wrote:

My laptop has Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1030 adapter and there is no new Windows 10 driver software available. Still searching for the solution...This is part of the problem with upgrading to Windows 10 some of your hardware will be compatible and some of it will not be. What you need to do is install the last Windows drivers again into Windows 10 and if it works you will know. I am aware that drivers for Intel are released through Intel, and pushed through Windows Update. However, the issue at hand is also the BIOS which has nothing to do with Intel, hence the topic title. Thanks for your response.

Using boot camp, if they will even run in Win XP, then they will run just fine on the MacBook running Windows XP.

  • Removing a WINDOWS partition, and using the OS on a different computer..

    Hello All,
I am debacled at the thought of this question. I use a partition of my hard drive to run Windows 7; to run older games and the sort. I purchased an actual retail copy/disk from best buy and did all the necessary work to intall it on my Mac. My question is, first, can you utilize the same copy on a different PC, while still being on my partitioned hard drive of my Mac? Second, if not, could I remove the partition form my Mac and simply install it on a brand new PC, built from scratch?

Not for long. in 30 days and you'll have problems.
Second, if not, could I remove the partition form my Mac and simply install it on a brand new PC, built from scratch?
    Yes you can.
When Windows is installed it takes the hardware configuration into the copy protection and sends that to Microsoft with the license key you enter.
So when you install your license of Windows on the new machine, it's going to require jumping through Microsoft's hoops to activate, then a few days for validation before you can download all the security updates required.
In the meanwhile any time your new machine is connected to the Internet, even for a short period, it could be pwned good by malware as they are roaming around looking for unsecured boxes awaiting activation for instance.
Perhaps it would be best to install Windows offline, then find their way of activating it without going online, then download a combo update from them on your Mac, then apply it to the PC offline, that way when it connects the first time it's not immediately pwned.
Make sure the anti-malware is installed before you go online as well.
If you install fresh and updates online, it's going to take days and days to get all the updates current, anytime you could get pwned too.

  • Windows partition and office products

I just received my new macbook. I noticed there is no word/excel etc. office software loaded and how can I get a windows operating software to use the bootcamp partition????

That's correct. If you want Office for the Mac you have to purchase it. If you want to install Windows under Boot Camp you need to purchase Windows - either XP w/SP2 (32-bit only) or SP3 or Vista.
Alternatives include iWork '09 (must purchase from Apple) or the freeware OpenOffice - www.openoffice.org.
