Wiping Hard Drive on PowerBook 1400 that won't boot from CD

A colleague has a PowerBook 1400 and would like to erase the hard disk drive. The problem is that I can't get another drive attached to the machine, Startup Disk crashes whenever I try to start it, and command-alt-shift-delete doesn't enable booting from the CD (the 1400 doesn't work with the C key on startup).
So, I can't get it to boot from the original media (which has OS 8.6, I think); I also tried booting from DBAN, but that didn't work.
I also can't get the installer on the original media to run. So I tried to create the Disk Tools disks using the original (CD) media, copying the folder to the desktop and then removing the CD and putting in the floppy drive, thinking that Disk Tools might very well have a formatting tool, but that failed, claiming that the image for Disk 1 is bad (I imagine it's not the image, but a problem with the computer).
We're not interested in getting the computer running, really (though it runs ok), just in wiping the HD. Any suggestions? Are the Disk Tool images something that Disk Utility on an OS X machine will recognize as a floppy disk image?

Well, I thought that wouldn't work. Guess what? It did. After zapping the PRAM, had no trouble booting into the CD. However, the disk tools didn't seem to include a secure wipe tool, so I finally ended up removing the hard drive and plugging that into my MacBook with a 2.5 in. USB enclosure and using Disk Utility to do a secure wipe, then putting the drive back in the machine and reinstalling OS 8.6.
In case anyone else is looking for a solution to this problem, to remove the drive: unplug the laptop, remove the battery, unscrew the three phillips screws on the edge of the battery slot, then the screw nearest the PCMCIA card slot, then remove the speaker grill, slide out the keyboard, unscrew the two screws at the top of the hard disk drive tray, separate the case slightly from the left front corner just enough to slip the hard drive ribbon out from underneath the top of the case, unplug the drive, then unscrew it from the drive tray.
Thank you all for your help.

  • I wiped my hard drive, but now my mac won't boot from the OS disk.

First it may help to read my previous discussion trying to amend the problem I had there. You can read it here. After that I did some more research and after backing up, I inserted my snow leopard install disk and wiped my entire hard drive using disk utility. Then, using Time Machine, I tried to restore my hard drive from a backup, and it told me that it can't restore from the backup and it gave me this error message (I'm sorry it's so long, I just didn't know which parts you may need and it gave me that entire thing. Also, this website wouldn't just let me attach the document):

Why did you wipe the drive?
    Were you having problems?
If you were those problem may be related to a failing hard drive and that is why the TM backup could be restored.
In you topic header you say the system won't boot from the SL DVD, But it di for you to wipe the drive. Then it should again boot from the SL DVD.
Insert the DVD and reboot, hold down the Option key and select the Optical drive, SL DVD, as the Boot source.

  • I need a data transfer from intact hard drive of older macbook that won't boot. Can Apple provide this service even though my one to one membership has expired?

I need a data transfer from a 2005 Macbook to my new one (2010). I damaged the old laptop and although it wouldn't turn on, when I brought it to the Apple Store they ascertained that the hard drive was still intact. They said I needed to purchase a one to one membership to get a data transfer, which I did, but somehow forgot about it and now it's expired. Is there any way I can still get the data from the old hard drive transferred to my new macbook? Can Apple provide this service even though my one to one membership has expired?

Go to OWC where you can purchase a suitable enclosure for the drive. You will need an enclosure for a SATA notebook drive. This is assuming the old computer is a MacBook and not an iBook. I make this observation because the first MacBook was released in 2006, not in 2005. If yours is a 2005 model then it's an iBook and uses an ATA interface.
Install the old drive in the enclosure, connect to your new computer. You can then transfer your data.

  • HT4914 My music is stored on an external hard drive. All music that I buy, whether from itunes or some other provider, automatically gets loaded onto my external drive. There is some music on my computer drive as well. Will match work in this circumstance

My music is stored on an external hard drive. All music that I buy, whether from itunes or some other provider, automatically gets loaded onto my external drive. There is some music on my computer drive as well. Will match work in this circumstance?

I followed all the instructions for consolidating my music into one folder on my external hard drive. (I'm struggling with this because my ext HD was renamed when I synched my iPod shuffle last night. The "E:" drive has now become the "F:" drive and all my songs have those dreaded exclamation points next to them. Exploring my computer, I found "My music" folders in two place on my C: drive and one place on my external hard drive... and the song list in each place is different.
    Argh.
So... following the directions in the article reference here, I attempted to consolidate all of my songs into one folder on my external hard drive.
But.. I checked the song list when the "consolidation" was complete... and MANY songs are missing. They're still on the C: drive, but don't appear to have been copied to the new folder on the ext HD.
    I would appreciate any suggestions.
    Thanks so much!
Edit: I tried to reassign the ext. HD a permanent letter, but my Control panel does not appear to offer the option of Administrative tools. Is there an easy way to get to this, as this seems to be the root of the problem?
    Thanks.

I have a 2012 Mini with a fusion drive that won't boot from a usb cloned drive. It came with 10.8.2 pre installed. I have zapped the PRAM and reset the SMC. Any thoughts?

When I tried using a recently downloaded (from the App store) version of MtLion 10.8.2 (12C60) I could NOT get the new MacMini to install or boot from a USB I had previously made. I was however able to use the Recovery Mode of the MacMini to create a bootable SSD which I had installed. The problem arose when I went back into Recovery DU as it saw the seperate drives (SSD & HD) as a broken Fusion Drive. Interestingly DU from the boot volume had NO issues and reported NO faults. It was the Recovery DU that identified the faulty Fusion Drive configuration. At this point I am definately out of my depth but my speculation is that the Recovery Volume is being used in some fashion to form the method or pattern that DU assigns files to the drives, System Report sees the drives as seperate volumes with all their individual characteristics.
Disk Utility did not make a bootable USB, I don't have or use CCC or Super Duper.
Here is the longer version I've been compiling:
Having bought a late 2012 Mac Mini(6,2) i7 2.66GHZ with the standard 1TB 5400 HD and 4GB of RAM (base model) I immediately decided to install a Mercury Elite 6g 240GB SSD and up the RAM to 16GB. I received both shipments on the same day and had all my new toys in front of me. After following the video advice on OWC’s website for the installation of the second drive I started the mini and formatted the SSD to accept the OS from Recovery on the original HD. This MacMini shipped with 10.8.2 (12C2034) as the OS, the normal build of 10.8.2 is (12C60). Having used Recovery Disk Utility to format the SSD it came back with an error that DU could’t Repair. I went ahead and installed the OS on the SSD and the Mini booted normally from both drives. The issue I encountered with this setup was that iMovie encountered an “unexpected error” and would not save a completed project. I therefore decided to figure the drive issue out because I suspect the new Fusion File Management software didn’t like my configuration with drives that Recovery DU saw as needing to be “fixed”. After spending some time on the phone with both OWC and Apple Support I took the plunge and used Internet Recovery Disk Utility and allowed both drives to be “fixed” after which DU created a Fusion Drive (Logical Drive) that I then ran Repair Disk on and it showed up as a single drive in DU. It works perfectly as described by Apple’s site:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5446
Having checked the Link Speed and Negotiated Speed they both show as 6g so I’m pleased not to have lost performance due to it being fuzed to a 3g 5400 drive. The biggest drawback is that Apple’s Fusion Management only allows for 1 additional partition and I would have preferred more than that.
I have sourced some additional information here:

  • Powerbook G4 500 won't boot from battery only

    Hi,
I have a Powerbook G4 500 Ti (running OS 10.4.8 that will not boot from just the battery without the powercord attached. I have tried several different batteries and the same results.
Sometimes under "About this Mac" the battery show's it's there but most of the time it doesn't show a battery and an X appears on the desktop.
What I've done - replaced the battery with a fully charged one from a working PB, reset the PMU, Reset the Pram, Cleaned the contacts on all batteries and in the battery bay, Reseated the Airport card, Down loaded the latest Apple updates today and loaded them. The computer runs great with just the powerchord and sometimes the battery icon shows a picture of a plug, but then it reverts to the X.
Another problem, I have a working Airport card installed from another machine and it doesn't show up in the About this Mac window I get Airport Card: No INFORMATION FOUND that it is installed. Could this be related and also can a dead PRAM battery cause this? Any help would really be appreciated I've tried everything. Thanks for your response in advance.

Hi, Opie. A dead PRAM battery will generally prevent a Tibook from starting at all, with or without the AC adapter or a main battery in place. Therefore, I doubt that that's your problem.
Your Airport card cage and your battery are both connected (separately) to the Powerbook's main logic board. it is possible for those connections to work loose over time, or to be hindered by oxidation on the contact surfaces. You can try disconnecting and then reconnecting each of them several times to wear away oxidation and make sure the connectors are properly seated.
This page is the starting point for a complete, well-illustrated set of take-apart instructions for the 500MHz Tibook. The bottom illustration on the page that shows how to remove the keyboard shows the battery connector: a large white plug with several multicolored wires attached, directly beneath the keyboard's left-hand Command (Apple) key. The last illustration in the instructions for removing the Airport card shows the card's connector: a rectangular tan or orange tab at the right-hand end of the flex cable that is connected to the Airport card socket. While you have the bottom cover of your Tibook off, check to make sure the card is firmly seated in its socket and that the flex cable is solidly connected to the logic board.
Another possible reason for the battery's not being detected sometimes: Some 400MHz and 500MHz Tibooks had an ill-fitting battery: it slopped around in the battery compartment and could lose contact. Apple offered for some time to install free of charge a small shim that took up the slack inside the battery compartment and kept the battery pressed against its contacts. If that correction was never made in your Tibook, or if the shim has fallen out or shifted from its proper position, your Tibook may be suffering from the original problem now. Check to see that there is no movement of the battery once you snap it into position in the battery compartment. If there is any, post back for guidance on making and installing a shim. (Apple long since discontinued the repair program, and it's a simple thing to make yourself.)

  • Even with a new hard drive and fresh install, it won't boot

Here's my story. On Wednesday last week, we had a power outage. (Yes, I had a surge protector. It didn't matter.) The next morning, when I turned my iMac on, it wouldn't boot. It got to the startup icon, but it just spun forever. I restarted and ran fsck, and it gave me a bunch of invalid sibling link errors. I used my Mac Mini to look at the hard drive in Target Disk mode and got the same result. I also tried using Disk Warrior, which hung a couple times before rebuilding the directory, but that didn't help. I took the iMac into the Apple Store, where a Genius checked it out, reset the PRAM, and then got a kernel panic. He told me I'd have to "erase and install," which I did (I had most of my important stuff backed up, but still lost some data, unfortunately.) I rebooted with the Apple install CD and reinstalled the OS. Then I rebooted into the clean install. The machine was extremely slow and took forever to get to the desktop. Then it hung with the spinning beach ball when I tried opening the Applications folder. A couple more pokes around the desktop eventually produced another kernel panic.
Yesterday, we got the hard drive replaced. I just finished reinstallation the OS, and guess what? It still won't boot. I get the Apple icon after the start up chime, then we get a blue screen that's quickly replaced with a gray screen. Then a black screen, then a gray screen again. This repeats forever with an occasional spinning beach ball until I restart.
I should note that I can boot into single-user mode and run fsck, and it reports no problems. I'm running DiskWarrior now for lack of any other ideas, and while it booted into the CD, it took forever to do so. I'm completely out of ideas, so other than throwing this machine in the trash and buying a new one, is there anything else I can try to diagnose the problem? Please note I was able to boot into a CD and reinstall the OS twice so far, so it still seems to be functioning to some extent.
    Any ideas?

Did you format the new drive, if not it has to be formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) before the OS can be installed. Here is a simple how-to guide:

I was getting warnings that my hard drive on my V570 needed to be replaced. I replaced it today and now can't boot. Keep seeing a message about "media test failure check cable." I tried going into BIOS and putting the hard drive at  the top of the boot list but this did not help. Can anyone help? Thanks.

  • Replaced Hard Drive 27" iMac (EMC 2390) won't boot

I have a 2nyear old 27" iMac i5 2.80 Mhz and the hard drive burned out. The OSX partition could not be repaired but the Boot Camp partition worked fine.
It had a 1TB Seagate Barracuda 2700 rpm.  I picked up a 3TB Barracuda from Best Buy and dropped it in.
I tried to boot the machine using my snow leopard disk.  The computer doesn't even see the new drive and it hangs at the Apple screen.
I dropped my old drive back in to see if I had harmed the machine.  It booted fine to my old boot camp partition.  However, it still hangs at the Apple screen with either hard drive installed.
I'm at a total loss as to what to do.

Well, it does say... Up to 6 Gbps
Hmm, & here's one that indicates ot even works down to 1.5 Gb/s of the G5s...

  • Hard Drive failed- new one installed - won't boot - fans going full

I have a mac mini one of the earlier intels. I came home and the fans were going full on, I turned it off and treid to restart.. and got the empty folder. So I guessed it was the hard drive. Took it out and tested it on my enclosure - with disk utility - buggered.
So I installed another hard drive after I had installed the OS. As soon as I connected the powere cord the fans still going full on.
I still get the missing folder symbol.
I tried booting off a usb connected hard drive and it starts up.
    Any ideas?
I am guessing the hard drive has caused some other issue, can I do an internal reset?
Also, when I boot off the external hard drive and open disk utlity - I can see the other internel hard drive??
But it wont boot from it?
Appreciate any ideas... I have run out!!
    Thanks in advance

    AHA, just fan issue?
    Tukaine
    Sep 23, 2012 10:59 PM
Since the late 2009 iMacs came out, replacing the hard drive has caused the internal Hard Drive Fan to start running at around 6000RPM.
This is due to Apple replacing the external Hard Drive temperature sensor with a proprietary firmware and using the drives internal sensor.
Replacement drives do not contain the firmware to deliver temperature data on the temperature sensor cable.
When the iMac does not receive a good signal from the hard drive it puts the fan at full speed to protect the drive.
If you replace your drive, your iMac will initially seem fine, but soon the fan will begin to speed up to full speed. Resetting the SMC (System Management Controller) will have a temporary effect, but again the fan will speed up.
Fixes people have used in the past included:
Using smcFanControl and the terminal to set a MAX speed for the fan and writing scripts to start this after every sleep/restart.
Shorting the temperature sensor cable (Not a possibility on 2011 iMacs) this tricks the iMac into thinking the drives temperature is very low, hence slow fan speed.
Both these fixes are less then perfect and leave the drive in a dangerous situation with no protection from overheating.
Another option people try is other Fan Control software. These programs will not work for this particular issue as they often only control the base speed, and if they do control the fans actual speed they rely on the temperature reported by the sensor which is now incorrect.
    HDD Fan Control
HDD Fan Control works to fix this issue by reading the drives internal temperature using the S.M.A.R.T protocol and set the fans actual speed to a value good to protect the drive.
It runs at startup and continually to always control the fan correctly, prevent the loud fan noise and protect the drive from overheating
Instead of HDDFan Control, get the free SSDFan Control

  • Installing printer driver in Classic when ibook won't boot from OS 9-help!

Hi all. Thanks in advance for reading. I posted this in the ibook section but upon doing more searching, I think this forum is the better one. Hope that's okay to do.
I am trying to print an old financial file for tax purposes from Classic. No print drivers are installed in the OS 9 environment (chooser only shows default OS 9 apple printers).
I tried adding a printer in OS 9 through the chooser and my network printer did not show up. Support site at apple advised an install of the driver in OS 9.
When I try to install an HP print driver in OS 9 (already installed in X), I am flummoxed because I can't get my ibook 12" to startup in OS9 (it's not an option in startup disk and the Apple support site tells me that my newer computer can't startup in OS 9).
I've tried to install in the Classic environment without booting from it. When I am running Classic and I insert the disk with printer drivers, it's only seen by the OS X environment. When I start the installer, the only option is on my hard drive as viewed by OS X.
Other than laying out bucks to purchase a new version of Quick Books (just to print out old documents), how can I enable printing from Classic? Is there a roundabout way to install the printer drivers? HP site offered no real help. Thanks for any assitance. Lori
    ibook G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   HP Photosmart 2710

    Hi John,
Thanks for your suggestion. There is only one HP installer. It must be a smart installer since it can work for OS 9 or X. Unfortunately, I can't find a way to make it "dumb" again.....selecting a custom install doesn't allow me to choose operating system or destination for install. Any other ideas? Thanks.

  • Repairing laptops that won't boot and show the blinking caps

Here's a little tutorial for all of you who have this annoying issue. It mostly applies to the 1 blink code (other codes have much simpler and straightforward solutions).
Ok, so the code says that it's caused because of a not functional CPU. That is most likely not the case. Most people who had the 1 blink code actually had a problem with the integrated video graphics card or northbridge of their laptops, not the CPU (in fact, CPU failures are quite uncommon). The problem is that these chips overheat quite often, they don't have good cooling and dissipation systems (most of the time, it is shared with the CPU which is absolutely insane), and the solder connections are of very bad quality. So with overheating, solder points start fracturing or cracking and they stop making contact, which causes all these issues, including the infamous RRoD and YLoD issues in the Xbox and Playstation consoles with their soldered video chips.
So there are two main ways of dealing with this:
    1 - Reflow
This is a short-term but easy solution that simply consists of reheating the damaged component to the point of getting rid of said fractures. It has a high success rate, as many people will tell you. It worked for me always, but again, after some time the issue may come back. Still, this is a very simple solution that doesn't require too much skill or equipment and is satisfying enough for most users. This is what I'm going to show how to do in this tutorial.
    2 - Reball
Reflowing doesn't always work, and when it does, it doesn't last long. Instead, reballing is a permanent solution which consists of removing the chip in its entirety and replacing all the solder contacts. Reballing requires specific equipment (a reball station), reballing stencils and leaded solder balls. It is a long procedure, which requires some skill and it only should be performed by experienced people. When a reflow won't work, you are better off sending your laptop to a reballing technician, or buying a new one (which would be a waste, in my opinion).
Ok, so how can we do a reflow? There are many ways to do this:
    1) Reheating your laptop: This is a simple as it sounds. Some people call it the "blanket" method, because you can just simply turn on your laptop, wrap it with a blanket or sweater and let it run until it shuts down because of overheating. I absolutely don't recommend doing this, as there are probably many working components (particularly the hard drive holding your data) that won't benefit from the overheating. I recommend disassembling the laptop and taking out all the good parts, like the hard drive, RAM sticks and any extra PCI-e cards installed. After that you can just simply unplug the cooling fan connector from the board then turn the laptop on. This will cause it to overheat faster, so you won't have to waste hours waiting for it to get hot (using the blanket method, it can take a lot of time). Most laptops will shutdown themselves after reaching a certain threshold temperature, if yours doesn't, well, just keep an eye on it so you can turn it off before it catches fire. After it turns off, let it rest and cool for at least an hour, then connect the cooling fan again, turn the laptop on and see if it boots. If it doesn't, well, you can keep trying this until it does (not recommended after 3 tries or so), or try the next methods.
    2) The oven method: This a bit tricky, but it may be more successful in some cases. First, strip down your computer until you get to the bare board holding the video chip. Remove the CPU, heatsink & fan, RAM, BIOS battery, wires, speakers, stickers, plastic sticky guards, foam spacers, absolutely everything that can be removed from the motherboard. Then preheat your household oven to approximately 200°C or 385°F. If your oven does not have a digital temperature display, perhaps use an internal oven thermometer to make sure the oven is in the right temperature range. Roll up some kitchen foil into balls, between half an inch and an inch wide, and place them on a baking tray. Place your motherboard, with CPU socket and GPU facing upwards, on top of the foil balls. It is a good idea to wrap additional foil around the more sensitive parts of the motherboard, like areas where there are capacitors and the CPU socket.
Try to wrap the rest of the motherboard in foil to protect it, leaving just the GPU exposed on both the top and bottom of the motherboard. Then place the baking tray with the laptop motherboard on it into the preheated oven.
Make sure your kitchen is well ventilated at this stage, turn on the extractor fan to full power and/or open an outside door and windows. This will help to take away any fumes.  Ideally, you should leave the kitchen while any fumes are still present. A couple of times during the procedure, have a quick look through the oven door (without opening it) making sure there are no smoke or flames visible. This is unlikely to occur, but can happen if stickers were left on the motherboard. After 8 minutes, turn the oven off and open the oven door. Do not remove the motherboard from the oven at this stage, it could be very hot and it is a better idea to allow it to cool down gradually. Take care not to inhale any fumes that might be present. After 20 minutes to half an hour, remove the cool motherboard from the oven and begin rebuilding your laptop. If all has gone well, it will boot up and the problem will be fixed. If the problem remains, you could try the procedure again, leaving it in the oven for a couple of minutes longer.
After performing a reflow in an oven, I recommend cleaning the oven thoroughly, then turn it on and allow any fumes that may have built up to be completely removed.  This is especially important before cooking food in the oven again.
    3) The heat gun method: Probably the best way to do a reflow, it is less destructive than the previous method (as you can focus on a single place, rather than overheating the entire board), but it may be worse than the first. The first step is to test out how well your heat gun will melt the solder. Place a chunk of solder on a coin, hold the heat gun one inch above it and record how long it takes the solder to flow. Once you have the timing right, mask off the motherboard (already removed from the case) so that just the chip in question is accessible. Reflow with the same spacing and timing as you did during the coin test.
    Did it work?
If your laptop works now, then you can do a couple of extra things to avoid this problem in the future:
Avoid overheating by underclocking the CPU: You can run your laptop's CPU at a lower clock speed (it will run slower, BUT not as much as you think. Undercloking by a 50% doesn't mean your laptop will perform 50% slower). It not only protects your laptop from damaging over time, it has the added benefits of making it run *much* cooler and quieter and also having longer battery life, which is awesome as well. To do this, simply (in Windows 7 and up)  click the battery icon in your notification area, select More power options, then change the selected plan (like Balanced) settings (click on Change plan settings), select Change advanced power settings, scroll down and, under Processor power management, Maximum processor state, type on both 'On Battery' and 'Plugged in' a value less than 50%. Change Minimum processor state to 1% and then System cooling policy to Active.
Avoid playing heavy games and running intensive applications: Such programs very often cause the underpowered integrated graphics card and CPU to overheat, which causes all these issues. Use a desktop machine with dedicated graphics for such programs if you want your laptop to last.
Again, always take out the hard drive before any of these procedures if you don't wanna lose any data, and if you can, any other components that can get damaged in the way. Note that a reflow, particularly the oven or heat gun methods are usually last-ditch resorts because they can permanently damage your computer, in particular if performed incorrectly. DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK. I can't be held responsible for any accidents or unwanted results that may occur after following this tutorial. If you have doubts, then you're generally better off sending your laptop to professional technicians than trying to repair these kind of issues by yourself. Unless a repair costs more than replacing your laptop, that is.
And before starting any of these procedures, try to research your issue on the Internet as much as you can. Search for your particular model, search in this exact same forum and any other as you'll be able to read about people experiencing this problem. You can search reflow on your favorite search engine and you'll find detailed tutorials and many videos which will show the procedure and help you do a better repair. Once you're very comfortable and knowledgeable with the subject, you can go ahead with the repair.

This is actually good stuff and well written but I hesitate to advise people to use either the "oven trick" or really even the heat gun method as both are notriously short-lived even if they appear effective. Your far better bet is to send the board in to one of the vendors on the internet who are set up to do a proper reball. Even those fixes are good for maybe 12-18 mos. But again, you get a high grade for spelling it out.

  • IMac won't boot from OS X install disc!

I'm needing to do some internal hard drive repairs but the system won't boot from the install disc! I've restarted it tons of times while holding down "C" and it just bypasses it and boots right into OS X. It restarts as normal with the chime (I am holding down "C") then the Apple logo comes up, then the spinning circle thing, but it just goes right into OS X. Help!

Let's be sure you are doing it properly.
First, you must use the OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer. Carefully check both surfaces for scratches, dirt, fingerprints and if so clean it carefully with a very soft cleaning cloth that won't scratch the disc.
Second, insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer. After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when the spinning gear appears below the dark gray Apple logo.

  • S10-2 Won't boot from hard drive

I have an S10-2 2957 that won't boot from the internal hard drive. The one key function doesn’t work either. After the splash comes up and the BIOS runs all that is displayed is a flashing cursor. If I boot from an external source (USB CD) I can see the hard drive and all files are intact. I have tried removing the battery and power supply, holding the power key for 30 seconds before powering the unit back up to no avail. I’m thinking that either the boot sector is corrupt or the first partition is not active. Any ideas?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

press f8 to load when you see lenovo logo at start-up, and select safe mode. post back the results.

  • MS-6728 won't boot from DVD drive?

I have a MS-6728 motherboard with bios v2.5 that won't boot from a bootable DVD disk. Here's what I've tried so far:
    - Made sure the DVD drive was the first one in the BIOS boot device list.
    - Tried two different DVD drives. One plain DVD drive. The other was a DVD dual layer writer. Both were PATA.
    - Booted the DVD from three other machines to confirm it's not the DVD disk. It worked fine on all of them.
    - Put the DVD drive from one of the machines that booted it correctly into the MS-6728 machine. That didn't fix the problem.
    - Removed all drives except the PATA DVD drive and one SATA hard drive. No luck.
    - Booted the MS-6728 machine from a bootable CD. That worked it was a Windows XP Pro install CD.
The DVD is a Debian install DVD BTW. Also I tried it each time by doing the F11 (select boot device) and just letting the BIOS auto detect everything. Each time I see a quick flash of "boot record not found" but I know the DVD is bootable since it worked with three other machines. The DVD was made from a ISO image downloaded from the net. I have booted the machine several times before from CDs.
I'm wondering if the BIOS only supports bootable CDs and not bootable DVDs?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

How many IDE controllers does you board have? If it has more than 2, make sure that the DVD drive is connected to Intel controller and not Promise Controller.
