  • White wire for wireless antenna missing? or does this laptop not need it?

I popped off the back panel of my new laptop to see why my internet wasn't working all the time. Turned out the black wire for antenna wasn't pushed on all the way so it kept popping off and on-
But I noticed the white wire is not there? I've had this laptop only 2 weeks so I was wondering if the new hp 15 inch touch screen laptop windows 8.1 has this missing on accident or made this way?
I was just wondering if anyone knows if this is normal or if it was a oops by the company and missing the white wire?
Thanks to anyone with an answer.
I included the photo of what it looks like- I crossed out all info just in case-

    Hi:
Some models with single band (2.4 GHz) wireless cards only come with one antenna.
I have no idea why HP does this because two antennas even on a single band card would provide for better wireless reception.
I can see by the part number on the wireless card that it is a Realtek 8188EE model which is a single band card.
HP did not make a mistake and leave an antenna out.

    Hi,
Please check it, I've got one HP Envy in front of me now, it only supports Print, Scan, Copy, Photo and Web. No Fax. And the following link shows its specs:

  • Wrong router for my needs

I think I let a pretty advertisement convince me to buy a product that is not suited for my needs; I hope someone here can shed some light on this for me as I am new to wireless home networking.
I have an Ubuntu (8.04) box hard-wired to my cable modem; I have it set up as a dual-boot machine so that I can get to Windows XP Professional as needed.
I also have a Dell laptop running Ubuntu as well; I use it primarily when I am on the road for work to keep up on email, or for anything requiring me to remote login to either my work computer (Windows remote desktop; I run IE6 in a Wine shell) or my home computer (Either through VNC viewer, or 'UltraVNC' in XP).
I also, in my 'spare' time, do some coffee-table computer repairs for friends and coworkers.
Here is what I would like to do:
I would like to be able to have a switch or a router that would let me have the ability to keep my main Ubuntu/XP box wired directly to an 'always on' internet connection.
I would also like to be able to have the laptop plugged in to an 'always on' connection, but I don't know that it's a show-stopper if I have to jump through a few hoops when I want to connect it.
I would also like to have a port available to connect to the internet with whatever random computer I find myself working on.
Ultimately, I would like to be able to use the wireless card on the lappy to connect to a network in my home without the need for a dedicated wire.
That being said... I did some quick research (*too* quick it seems!), and it looked as though the WRT54GL would do everything I need.
So... being new to the wireless-home networking world, I made certain to follow each step on the installation CD (in XP) carefully... and everything went smoothly for a while...
But, every few hours, the internet connection will simply vanish. By that, I mean... the internet status light is green, so I am assuming the router can see the internet, and the lights for both connected computers (laptop and desktop) are green, so I assume that means the router can also see the computers. But neither machine can connect to the internet at all. ifconfig returns 192.168.101, so the router is visible to the computer, it just seems as though the router isnt allowing either machine, on any of the 4 ports, see the internet.
Now this happens after the connection has been running fine for hours.
The fix for this seems to be one of two things... Either I cycle the power on the router, after which I need to refresh the network device list on the computers (or select 'repair network' on the XP machine).
The other solution is to go to the web browser configuration and to select 'Release DHCP' and then 'Renew DHCP', which is fine, I only wish it was documented somewhere to do that as it would have saved me several hours of work to figure it out.
A 'live support' lady had me flash the firmware in response to my inquiry about this, the next one told me to 'observe it carefully', whatever that means. She couldn't explain it further.
But after doing that, the connection will again work for several hours straight, then it will simply vanish again.
Now - in addition to that, here's the part that is making me think I have chosen the wrong product... I am no longer able to remote login to my home computer using either the ip address as reported by ifconfig (which has always worked in the past) or the subdomain name I have set up with DynDNS (which has also always worked) from any machine at all, including the XP box I use in my office at work (which has always worked in the past.)
Having spent countless hours simply trying to get this router to perform as I believed it would, I have yet to even attempt to venture into the wireless side of things; if a hard-wired switch is this befuddling, then I can only imagine what sort of nightmare it will be to get the wireless side to work.
I guess the bottom line is this: I have disconnected the router and plugged the main machine straight into the cable modem, and everything is working as it should.
Can anyone recommend a good, reliable, and always-on router that will allow me to connect up to three machines simultaneously without having to jump through any hoops on at least one port?
And to be honest, I am not really concerned about wireless; the restaurant down the street allows me to connect very easily if I set my lappy near the living room window
    Thanks in advance.
(edit - the formatting of this post was horrible... I added the HTML line breaks and it's much better now!)

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    "it will definately work!"
It definately worked for about an hour, then it went away.
And it continues to do so.
And this is the newest firmware which was supposed to have this problem taken care of!
Actually, does anyone know if there is a newer version available? I only ask because this version is quite old, even though it came directly from the linksys website (the live support technician sent me the link just to sure), and is the same version as was already on the router to begin with, and it still has the configuration page for releasing the DHCP, and I was told by their live support that the new version had eliminated this problem.
I guess I can go in and do the release DHCP thing every few hours, but it still just seems like that is something that could be handled by a script. And the part that bothers me, is that if I decide to go ahead and try and brave setting it up to use the wireless features, then will I be able to release the DHCP from the laptop? Or will I need to go back to the main computer that is hard-wired?
More importantly, if they ever get this to where it can allow a remote login, won't it kick out the computer doing the remoting in?
Or is this something that is simply beyond the scope of this product?

  • SCOT - SMTP-node for FAX

    Hi all,
I'm trying to configure transaction SCOT for the Fax-part.
I'm rather new at this, so I looked trough the doc. Apparanetly, we need a SMTP-node for fax also, and in the doc, it's stated that this node will be created automatically. Unfortunately, this is not the case, so I'm wondering how to solve this ?

  • Distinctive Ring for Fax

Can anybody tell me if it is possible to get distinctive ring for fax on my HP All-in-One with BT Home package or do I need to upgrade to a business package?  Thanks in advance!  Annie

I think you should try again - looks like you
    mistyped the file path /usr/bin/fax.
I have gone back to Terminal and am in a file called usr/bin/fax. However, there's nothing there--no lines of programming that is. At the bottom of the page are headers--Get Help, Exit, Read File, etc.--but clicking on them does nothing, and typing ^G to Get Help for instance does nothing. Obviously I need to do somethong more to get to those lines of programming--specifically the INIT sequence--forgive my non-programer vocabulary--mentioned in the hint above.
Thanks for your help--any more suggestions?

  • Reccomended Type Of Wire For DSL Phone Line?

I have my DSL modem on its own jack, and I need too replace the wiring from the jack to the service box, its currently half thermostat wire (for furnaces and such) and half phone line, I understand there are different types of wire, so I am wondering which type is the best, what I currently have is the flat 4 wire stranded, instead of solid, I am told that isnt reccommended. So I need to know what to get, that will work the best.

Aside from using cat-5 as the previous post suggests, typical inside wire telephone wire is a beige plastic covered 2 pair (4 wire) phone wire. Each wire is solid and not braided wire. You can probably get it in different lengths from a nearby lowes or home depot.
Typically, the red and green wire are used as the tip and ring connections for line 1 in your house. The black and yellow wire are used for line 2 if you have a second line or as spare wires in case either the red or green have an issue. A pair of wires will be needed to be connected at the entry point of your service and connected to the phone jack that you will connect the dsl modem to. Use the red and green.
    Hope this helps.

  • Connecting the mac to the Phone for fax/phone

    Hi,
I'd like to use my mac (Imac and Macmini)  for sending/receiving faxes and perhaps for CPI (computer phone integration).
I have obtained a USRobotics usb modem. The question I have is do I need to connect that modem to the same connection (using a splitter) to where my telephone handset is ?
If I connect this usb modem from the macmini to the phone line (not where the handset is), can I then use the Imac to connect to the phone for fax/cpi ?
It is all the same phone line and on the same wifi.
I hope I have explained myself clearly

Yes, you can connect to any phone jack or splitter, but it is using the same line as your phone so only one can work at a time, unless you have two lines coming into the house.
Set up the modem as you would a printer.
Add printer and select the modem when you see it.
Set the answer to maybe 6 rings otherwise it will answer all calls and you will think that you have no friends left.
They will tell you: Why do you you beep at me whenever I call.

  • ***CALLING ALL MACBOOK AIR USERS*** Will the base model of the 2013 Macbook Air 11" be enough for my needs?

    Ok,
This is my first post to this forum.
I have a Late 2011 i5 Macbook Pro. I used this last year during college but the weight was just unbearable. I have decided this year to upgrade to a Macbook Air. Here is my question.
I am starting uni and will be studying Nursing and so I will not be using any heavy software or progaming etc.
The only thing I will use is Office for Mac and browsing. I normally keep around 15 browser tabs open whilst I research.
I also like to download so I would also like Vuse on my Macbook too. I own an external hardrive and so memory isnt a big deal (unless it makes a difference to the performance of the mac itself, Sorry im not great with this stuff)
Do you guys think the base model of the 11" Macbook Air (1.3ghz, 4GB ram, 128GB SSD) will be enough for my needs or do you think I would need to custom build it (1.7ghz, 8GB ram, 128GB SSD)?
My boyfriend thinks for what im using it for the base model will be fine but I dont want to get it to find that its not enough as my main concern is lag but I also do not want to pay extra for something which isnt going to be fully used (ie my current Macbook Pro).
For those of you who do have the 11' Macbook air, how are you finding it? Also, this will be my main computing device, I am selling my Pro but am thinking of buying the wireless keyboard and trackpad so I can connect to an extenal monitor whilst im at home.
Thank you guys in adavnce for any answers.

I too have a 2011 mackbook pro and I also have a mid 2012 mackbook air 128 gb ssd and 4 gb ram , I am probably goint to sell the pro because I just don't use it anymore . If you intend to do heavy multi tasking 8gb ram as suggested by a previous poster might be worth the extra money.

  • One number for faxing and for voice

    Hi,
I would like to know if it possible to have one number for faxing and for voice.
What I have read up is that Cisco can detect the fax tones. What I would like to do is route all inbound faxes to a viop dial-peer and all voice to another e1 port.
I am just looking for some more info if this can be done.
    Thanks you?

Yes this is possible with either cisco fax relay or t.38 fax relay.

  • Need A New Printer~Which Would Be Good For My Needs?

Just on Saturday I got my New iMac computer with of course OS X Mountain Lion to replace my old iMac that was still running on Tiger.  Now I need to upgrade and get new items, particularly a printer. My old printer is a HP All-In-One Photosmart and was the type to directly hook up via a USB port cable...NOT wireless.  There IS NO updated software to upgrade this printer, so that means I need to get a new printer.  I don't have wireless Wi-Fi but connect to the internet via Ethernet cable and notice most of the "newer"printers are all wireless..are they any printers that can have the versatility to connect via wireless but more important USB cable?  I need a printer that can print documents (from my computer), scan and print photos from my computer NOT a memory card as I do not have a digital camera...my photos are scans from a photo scanner to digitize.  I've been reading what Apple store has to offer as far as printers and frankly confused which would be the best printer to buy for my needs.
    Any suggestions??
PS NEED PRINTER THAT CAN HOOK UP VIA USB PORT NOT ETHERNET AS THAT IS ALREADY TAKEN BY MY HOOK UP VIA MY DSL ROUTER

Canon MG8220 has wireless, Ethernet and USB posts. Printer and scanner drivers are available via Apple Software Update.

  • Which rMBP for my needs? 13" or 15" rMBP

    Hi,
I've read several threads and articles and can't seem to find any reviews for folks w/ a similar setup.  Most reviews are for a the laptops themselves but I'm curious if anyone can chime in on the performance when connected to a 27" Apple display (pre or post thunderbolt).  How does a 13" rMBP perform in iPhoto/Lightroom/Photoshop on a 27" apply display?
Here's some background.  I'm currently using a 2010 15" MBP connected to a 2010 27" Apple cinema display (pre-thunderbolt) and performance really bogs down in iPhoto (150GB iPhoto size).  Performance is much, much better when not using the 27" display.
My current and future uses are iPhoto and iMovie.  I use a Canon 7D DSLR mostly for pics and HD vids of my friends and family.  I plan to purchase either Aperture or Lightroom once I get a new rMBP as well.  I shoot RAW files and use the HD video features.
Can anyone chime in and/or make a recommendation as to which rMBP would be best for my uses?  I like the price and form factor of the 13" rMBP but my main concern is it doesn't have enough horsepower to drive a 27" apple cinema display.
I have both a 2008 13" aluminum macbook, 2010 15" MBP, 2011 MBA, and all work like champs - when standalone.  It's just that they don't seem to be able to handle 27" apple display all too well (i.e. scroll lag, choppiness when dragging windows, iPhoto slider update lag, etc).  The 2008" 13 aluminum macbook can only watch Bloomberg TV standalone, on the 27" display it's blank.  My work laptop (2011 Lenovo ThinkPad) handles the 27" display like a boss!!
With that said, unfortunately, for my needs I feel like it's time to upgrade (again) and now leaning more towards the 15" rMBP.  But if the 13" rMBP can handle large RAW files, HD vids, AND a 27" cinema display I'll get that one.
Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks so much!

I also use a Canon 7D. One big difference is that the current 13" and 15" have Intel Iris/Iris Pro integrated graphics, which are said to be a great improvement over the integrated graphics in the older MacBooks you have. They are so much better that Apple no longer sells MacBook Pros with a separate graphics card unless you buy the most expensive 15" MacBook Pro, which is so expensive I'm not sure I'll ever buy it.
For Aperture or Lightroom, the amount of RAM is going to be very important. I don't use Aperture, but for Lightroom the graphics card is not very important. From that I would guess that you could get either a 13" or 15" as long as you put enough RAM into it from the beginning, since both programs want lots of RAM and you can't upgrade it later. That should be at least 8GB RAM, but I would just max it out at 16GB RAM and not worry about it again.
The current 15" should drive a 27" monitor without a problem. I'd like to say the 13" can, but since it's labeled Iris instead of Iris Pro that might make a difference. If you live anywhere near an Apple Store you should go down there and ask them to connect the 13" to one of their 27" monitors and see how well everything works.
