Wire trick

A quick question- can I use a very thin wire using the wire trick, or does it need to carry a lot of current? I took apart some monstercable speaker wire, which is 100% ofc.  One strand is very thin, is that a problem? We're talking hair thin almost.  I'd like to use this unless it would be a problem.

Long as you're talking how you did it ...
How exactly did you get the wire in place?  I tried this for a while last nite, maybe I'm just getting old, but I couldn't quite get a strand of wire to sit in those two holes on the motherboard... just curious if there's any good trick to it...

  • Wire tricking the thrbrd xp to unlock multipliers

on most msi mother boards a new xp thrbrd, not the older palaminos
[if the core of your cpu is a rectangle its a thrbrd
if its a square then its a palamino and this does not work with them
you can also go here  http://www.overclockers.com/tips00173/]
that has a default multiplier of 13 or over are not unlocked, try to change the multipler and it will not boot you will need to clear the cmos
     Clear CMOS Guide
you can get around this with the WIRE TRICK
Just take a small peice of wire and connect the 2 pins that go in these holes.
AND BY THIN I MEAN ONE STRAND OF WIRE FROM SAY A SPEAKER LEAD
when fitting the cpu take care and do not force it
you will now be able to select multipliers up to 12.5
warning if you select 13 or more it will not boot ok,you have been warned
an if you mess it up dont come crying to msi or me
as an alternative you can give this lot 15 dollars but it just does the same thing

  • "Wire Trick" wire length?

Want to unlock my xp2400 via the wire trick.  How long should the wire be?  Thanks

  • Used the wire trick for my xp1900+

i did it, but don't know if it work!
also i have the insane Thermalright SLK800 on my k7t266 pro2!
temps drops from 45 c to 37 c (idle temps)!
    load is 42 c!
cpu is still using 141 FSB and the multiplier is set to 'auto'
    cpu speed at 1700mhz.
last night i did this (after the wire trick):
    i chose FSB 133 and a multiplier of 14.
system can boot, but WITHOUT the GF4 Ti!
    no screen activities!
i reset the BIOS, everything worked again.
please tell me how do i change the multiplier?
which setting is for my system the best you think?
is this right? if my system can't boot with the multiplier of 14, does this mean that the wire trick worked???
what about this? i choose FSB 100 and set the multiplier to 14 for test??
i used one thin speaker wire for the trick.
    HELP!
    Thanx!

via doesn't have the agp/pci lock!!! not to sure about your board but i would imagine it has the 1/5 divider in it!! so at 166 everything is in spec. how high can you put the fsb before the 1/5 is no more?? i have know idea
i read a few reports about the kt3 ultra 1/5 is good till 200fsb...if that is true i wouldn't think the kt400 would be any different. but i don't know if that is true or not about the 1/5 still in at 200fsb
and also their isn't a program out there where you can force a agp/pci lock...powersrtrip is a videocard utility for overclocking your vidcard and tweaking driver settings etc.

  • Wire trick didn't work

    Hello all.
I am having a problem. I can't get the computer to post any time I changed the muliplier to increase the fsb.  I did the wire trick and it seems as if nothing has changed.  It IS possible that the wire broke when I pushed the CPU in the socket, but I don't think it did. My "stock" mulitplier should be gone once the trick is applied, right?
For example, I tried to run at 166fsb and 12x multiplier- no dice...

well first of all which wire trick?.wrapping the pins or
u wire pushed in zif soket?........will the system post up when cmos has been cleared?....if so go into bios and check mhz.........should be 1995 at default settings.....if it shows this.........then you did not unlock it correctly......by default the cpu will go back to H/W..and if unlocked correctly the system will be showing about 600 mhz or so.....clearly using the 6 x multiplier........

  • [AMD] 3000+ Barton and wire trick

Does anyone know why the 2800+Barton with the wire trick worked for the 200FSB but the 3000+Barton doesn't? I tried with the 3000+ and it won't go to the 200FSB.   I then tried the 2800+Barton again and it works. What is with this 3000+?   I figured that if I took the 2800+ to a 3200+ then I could really get the 3000+ OCed. Did they do something to the 3000+ so that it wouldn't work?

At least I have a system that is running. I ought to be thankful for that. I have the 2800+333MHz and 2x512mb of Kingston 333MHz memory and an old P3 800MHz w/ 512mb. system. All I need is another socket A motherboard and with the parts from the P3 I will have another good system. The P2 is still running and is maxed out. It can't be upgraded any more. So I'll build another AMD system that will run just as well as this one. PLUS I'll start folding with that one also.

  • Does wire trick work on Palomino?

Hi, Please check what I have in my sig below.  I guess I'm not sure what else I can do with my palomino.  Will I benefit from doing the wire trick?  I can set my fsb to 140-141 and get ~1.8GHz, multipier auto, but anything above that and it just doesn't POST.  Should I think about selling my chip and getting a T-bred B or a Barton?  I read about a Barton being bumped up 500MHz.  Or should I just wait until November when DOOM 3 comes out and the new athlon 64's.
    Thanks,
    Matt

  • KT4V and BIOS 1.9

Just flashed my KT4V-L to the new 1.9 bios without any problems.  I ran a few benchmarks on SANDRA as that is what I had handy(cpu arithmetic and MM, memory bandwidth, and cache and memory benchmark); I didn't see any real improvements (as expected).  I can't see any instability at the moment.  I haven't yet overclocked my cpu again to where it was, but I'll be sure to post again after I do.

    Current FSB = 169.3
Multiplier = 10.5 (didn't want to bother with wire trick)
    Total speed = 1778 mhz
    Vcore = 1.81V
Idle temp = 43C from PC Alert 4 and FL4 (39C in BIOS)
I am stoked about this lowered Vcore.  With bios 1.8, I had to run at 1.85 for it to be stable; at 1.825, it was stable for about 30 minutes and then rebooted.  With 1.9, I have been running at 1.80V (1.81 actually, so says FL4) for 45 minutes.  I played about 30 minutes of CS, and since then I have been listening to music (something that didn't fly for very long at this voltage with bios 1.8 ) while checking email, IMing, and posting here at the forum.  Since the Vcore is lower, and along with the CPU Temp Detection modification of bios 1.9, my temp is way down at this overclocked speed.
45 minutes is not very long, so this isn't definitive at all.  However, it is longer than was possible with bios 1.8 at 1.81V.
    Hooray so far...

  • Overclocking KT4-Ultra & BIOS 1.4

Hy. I've overclocked my 2400+ to 2300Mhz(170FSB). I had also to upper the core voltage to 1.75v (1.74real) so because of this I get higher temps. The thing is that I use a RaptorCool silent cooler and a 12cm fan blowing cold air into the case. This is obvious not enought but is silent. And I use the PC mostly for "domestic" things like watching movies and listening music and just ocasionally for games. Now I would really need the CPU Halt Command enabled in bios to lower my temperatures, but this is available only in v1.4. And if I flash to 1.4 I loose my preseted 13.5 multiplyer (wire trick) that is changing into 11 there goes my overclock.  The WPCREDIT method does not apply as I want to switch easy from Enabled/Disabled by just selecting in bios.
How could this be even possible? If this can happen (multiplyer from 13.5 to 11) why not also a bios to unlock the CPU?

The issue here is not why I want to overclock (doh) and also not the HDD performance. And I am among the users that flashed a lot the mobo and  that reported the v1.4 temps issue wich is not solved and I think it will never be as the support stopped. I needed the CPU Halt because was a simple ON/OFF thing. Now I find it was   because I would still need to enter the bios. So why not just lower the voltage?    But yet is this strange thing - how can the multiplyer change from 13.5 to 11?  This v1.4 bios is full of (unpleasent) surprises.
Anyone played the flash game Bubble Trouble? Well, that's a game that requires a lot of CPU. Even with Radeon9800 you will be in "trouble" if you don't have enought CPU )) And this is the main reason why I overclocked ) to play it while I run a movie on TV-out and listen to music on my usb earphones.

  • CPU MULTIPIER WILL NOT CHANGE ON K7N2-L

    Hi all,
I am having problem on changing the cpu multipier on the bios setup.  I have tried to lower it, but the Mhz remains the same after the change.  I have the lastest bios and I just don't know why.  I thought the mobo was able to unlock the cpu multipier.  I have a XP1700.
    Please help.
    Ken

The wire trick you described worked perfect.
The only draw backs I have found is that I lose the 13x multiplier of course,  but if I set vcore to H/W it reverts my cpu multiplier back to 6x.........do not ask me why I just know that is what it shows.....all other vcore settings seem to work with no side effects except slight overvoltage...

  • Odd cPU detection and a bios issue

hey guys got somemore info about my super odd cpu
updated mobo biod to latest 5.5
cpu detected as athlon xp 3000 as it "should" do
    cpu-z detected as athlon xp 300 = multi 13 x 166
now all of a sudden its not detecting it properly
i'm back to using the multi-locked at 14, can't lower multiplier, and FSB changes arent too stable, havent done thorough stress tests yet.
    clock atm = 2337MHz o.O
and a wierd prob i've been gettin recently, bios has been resetting itself at random intervals....my computer will just restart itself and reset the cmos to defaults and ask me to correct them
wondering if any of u guys n gals could help
    cheers in advance
    -mike-

i have already cleared cmos multiple times when overclocks have failed.....might try reflashing the bios n seeing what happens
just think its odd that this cpu won't run any lower multipliers and crashes on anything other that "auto" setting
u think the wire trick would me here, i wanna lower multi and raise fsb to 200
but this chip aint lettin me do anything :/
cheers for ur reply dude :D

  • K7N2 - System won't boot (CMOS clear does nothing)

I was trying to OC with the help of a friend. AIDA32 showed my processor running at 2000MHz (7.5 x 267). I was told that putting CPU Ratio to 12.0 and FSB to 166 would get me no OC, but that this is how it should be (?). Since I was being careful (cause of past experiences), my friend told me to set it at 7.0 and 166. Just to be safe. Anyway, I made the change and after that when I press my power button, the computer turns on but nothing happens. No signal is sent to the monitor, neither does the floppydrive do its friendly sound like usual. I was told to use CMOS clear, so I changed the jumper into clear mode, waited a couple minutes and put it back. Nothing happens. I then tried changing some parts, put a 900MHz TB in, another GPU and even tried another monitor (desperate at this time!). Now, I was under the impression that CMOS clear should do the trick, that I was safe. But since this happened last night, I even left the jumper on clear over night. Still nothing happens. What am I to do? I would greatly appreciate any help, I am totally lost here.
My system: XP 2400+ (Thoroughbred-B), MSI K7N2 (nForce2), 2x256 Kingston Hyper-X, Sapphire Radeon 9800SE AiW, WinXP Pro. Thanks for any help in advance.
P.S. A similar thing happened before, which mysteriously got fixed by changing parts left and right. I also checked a post on the forum about the multipliers being weird in the BIOS (that's what my friend thought too).

your cpu uses 15 as a multiplier so you cannot select lower multipliers without the wire trick
and if its new evan that does not work

be sure to press start before moving the jumper to clear the psu

  • Km3m mobo shut down after a few seconds

i have been playing with this new mobo for a while now trying to get it to work
it keeps shutting down after 15 or so seconds, so i tried every possible combination
with the power sw and reset sw and such. still had problem so i came on here to read up on similar problems. then i read some advice that cpu might be overheating or heating to quickly and is causing comptuer to shut off. so i took out the cpu and turned her on and she didnt not shut down so i am assuming that i have this problem. the advice given to the other guy was to make sure the hsf paste was on correctly. now is the paste that improtant or is the hsf defect any advice?

yeah i didnt put the paste on the die, didnt think it made such a difference, have to wait a little bit to go get some more paste. but now the original psu is not working,( it was an hour ago), i got another that is but i cant keep it. the fan works when you do the green wire black wire trick so i am really confused now. yes wires are connected properly
    oh rates on psu non- working one  +3 @ 28a, +5@40a, +12@17a
    3+5 total max 220w, total 380w
    working one +3@38a +5@28a +12@23a
    3+5 total 240, total 380

  • Please help me with my ongoing problems...

Ok, theres alot here, so dont forget whats typed first by the time you get to the end
MSI k7n2l board a few weeks ago. Tried wire trick with 2600+, fried CPU. Got a new cpu, still no boot. I assumed I must've fried the board too.
Got a new CPU AND board.
So once again new mb with 2600+. No boot. Also now have a brand new Barton 2500, No boot.
First the dbracket, using the Barton, returned a Bad Cpu led. I messed around with what was plugged into the PSU, and next time the led went past cpu check and hung on memory check.
The 2600 booted once, amazingly. It got past cpu check, and memory check, then threw an error (on the monitor) that said "CMOS Checksum error, defaults loaded". Before I could hit anything the screen sorta went weird, like it does when a video card overheats or something, and everything shut off.
Have managed once or twice more to get the 2600 to get that far, but now it wont boot at all, always returned the Bad cpu led lights.
The Barton continues to get past the cpu check and hang on memory check.
Memory was tested good yesterday. Also, have tried with two different vid cards, both I know are good.
    Anyone have any advice?
    This really stinks.

    FIXED!!!!!!!
BOARD AFTER BOARD CPU AFTER CPU (although I know I fried one hehehehe) TURNS OUT THE NO BOOT UP WAS BECAUSE THE SK800 FITS SO CRAPPILY!!!!!!!!!!!
I was tired of attaching the SK800 again and again and again as I switched from 2500+ to 2600+ trying to get ANYTHING to work. I then got out my old spire "thin fin" heatsink/fan and BOOTUP!!!!!!!!!!
Can you believe this?? After all this stressing!
I put the SK800 back on, NO BOOT. Memory problem says dbracket. Spire goes back on, BOOT UP!.
I really wanna use the sk800 though, but im happy!
