Wired Access with Networks OFF?

When I make a wired connection to my TimeCapsule, I'm seeing other devices on the network even though I have Ethernet and Wi-Fi turned off. Is this normal?
I am adding a new AE2 to my wired network (demoting the TimeCapsule 1st gen to switch/file server) and I was puzzled that my iMac was still seeing shared devices on the network (Time Capsule, server, other computers) when I was connecting via the WiFi Guest network. I had Ethernet turned off in the control panel and I checked that I was on the Guest network (172.16.x.x) but I was still seeing devices that were on my primary (10.0.1.x) network.
I thought the Guest Networking function wasn't working but I finally traced it down to the wired connection. If I unplug the Ethernet cable, I have no shared devices, as expected. But as soon as I plug the cable back in I see other computers on the non-Guest network, even with Ethernet turned off. If I turn off both Ethernet and WiFi, I can still see my Time Capsule and Server. (The server is connected to the Time Capsule via the 10.0.1.x wireless network).
I can see this as a 'feature' but it surprised me that I was able to access the TimeCapsule and networked devices even though Ethernet and Wi-Fi were turned off. I expected that with Ethernet and Airport turned off, my iMac would be not be connected to other network devices.  Is there some other protocol that Apple uses to maintain a connection over the wired connection to Airport devices?

With reference to your concern after the firmware upgrade did you reset the router? After successful firmware upgrade you need to reset the Router. It is recommended to reset the router once. Steps to reset the router:
Push the reset button on router for 30 seconds, turn off the router wait for 30 seconds and then power it on. Power light should blink when you perform the reset process.
After reset, you should have reconfigured the router and would have checked the speed of the router..

  • Wi-Fi Access with SSID Off

Pursuing maximum security for my Time Capsule's Internet access, I turned off my SSID using Airport Utility > Manual Setup > Wireless > More Options > and checking Create a Closed Network. My MacBook Pro continued to connect through my Airport network, but my new iPod Touch lost its contact and lost my Airport network password as well.
Is there any way I can teach the iPod to remember my Airport network password and continue to connect even with the SSID turned off, the way my MacBook Pro does?
(In the rural area where I live there are very few open Wi-Fi services, so I'm not concerned about losing "access anywhere." I'm more interested in being able to access the Internet from anywhere within my own home.)

A robust encryption system (WPA2 is currently the best) with a sufficiently complex password system of 8-12 characters will keep everyone but the NSA from cracking you network. Hiding the SSID only makes it difficult to get all of the devices working correctly.
You can get your touch to remember your network login if you do the following:
    1. Reset your network settings
    2. Turn the touch off
    3. Turn it back on and log into your network by tapping Settings > WiFi > Other
    4. Enter your SSID, your security, and your password.
This has been reported to work but you are on your own.

I cannot get my iMac with built-in airport wi-fi to allow internet connections to Nook and PS3. The devices access the network, but internet connection fails. Internet sharing is enabled, network security (WEP, WPA) is disabled.  What to check next?

On an additional note, I've purchased a wireless router and everything connected on the first attempt.  It just vexes me that the built-in wireless isn't working as a router.  Is this another example of "Mac only plays with Mac"?

  • How do I use Airport Extreme to create wired access point on wireless network?

Bit of an odd situation. I just went from cable to DSL at home and the modem moved from right by my computer to upstairs.
Trouble is, there's no real easy way to get a cable from the modem upstairs to my X-box (sans wireless connector) downstairs.
I could buy the wireless adaptor for the X-Box, but I was hoping I wouldn't have to spend any more money.
I have my airport extreme, and I was hoping I could use it to create a wired access point on the network, recieving the signal from the wireless modem upstairs and allowing me to plug in the X-Box.
Is this possible? If so, how? I've been through the config panel about a dozen times, but can't figure out what combination to set up.
    Thanks.

Will it work if I use the express to create the network?
Yes, providing that you have an 802.11n version of the AirPort Express and the Express has been configured to "Allow this network to be extended".
Then, the AirPort Extreme can be configured to "extend" the Express network. When you do this, the AirPort Extreme will provide more wireless coverage and the LAN Ethernet ports are enabled, so you can connect an Ethernet device.
This will not be a "normal" Ethernet connection. It will only work as well as the wireless "hop" between the Express and Extreme allow.
For best results and performance, a wired connection through the hole in the wall is always best. If you decide to do this, you will need the "new" AirPort Express with both a WAN and LAN port on the device. But, you could try wireless first to see if it will meet your goals before you reach for the tools.

  • Wired guest access with 5508

    Hi
I have setup wireless guest access for a customer with a single 5508 and web authentication no problem at all. He then wanted to test wired guest access. The 5508 is currently connected to a single 3560 switch. The wired clients get a DHCP address OK but cannot reslove DNS and thus don't get redirected to teh guest login portal. I have even tried turning of all L3 security to no avail. The setup is as follows
VLAN 101 access points and 5508 management interface
VLAN 102 wired guest access dynamic ingress (L2 config only no SVI on 3560)
VLAN 103 wireless guest dynamic egress nterface L3 network with SVI on switch
VLAN 104 wired guest dynamic egress interface L3 network with SVI on switch
There are two DHCP pools setup on the WLC one for the VLAN 103 and one for the VLAN 104 subnets.
The internet router is also connected to the 3560 on a sepearte VLAN with an SVI. the 3560 has a default route to teh internet router and teh DHCP pools give the DHCP clients a default gateway of the IP address of dynamic interface 103 or 104. The Internet routre can ping the WLC on both these addresses.
LAG is enabled on teh WLC and VLANs 101-104 are trunked to it from the 3560.
I even tried making the wired guest egress interface the same one as for wireless. The wired clientys now got an IP address on the wireless range but still couldnt pass any traffic. It's like the intrenal bridging on teh WLC between VALN 102 and 104 (or 103) is broken. Tried both the lates 6.x and 7.x software on the WLC. Any ideas ? All the problems I can find with this seem to relate to not gettingas far as a DHCP address but that works fine.
    Thanks
    Pat

    Hi
Yes got it resolved. It turns out that the connection from the wired guest access port to the WLC must be L2. That is the switch that the wired guest acces sport is connected and WLC are connected to must be L2 only. We were using a single switch to do the testing and it was also doing the routing for the test LAN. Even though there was no L3 VLAN interface configured for the VLAN that the guest access port was on for some reason this breaks it. Absolu Didnt have chance to work out the exact limitations of this as we simply made the switch L2 only and configured an 802.1Q trunk to the Internet router and made subinterfaces on the router for the wired and wireless egress ports and it worked then. No config change was needed on the WLC at all.
The only thing I can think of is that it's something about the way the WLC joins the wired guest access ingress VLAn and egress VLAN. The WLC isn't a reall router it says so in the documentation. I think the packet coming from the wired access port is being bridged to the egress VLAn not routed and this is what screws it up (remeber with a router the source and destination MAC addresses would be changed with a bridge they aren't). Got to be something along those lines. If you have a bigger newtork with a guest anchor WLC handling this function you dont run into this as the traffic is coming over an EOIP tunnle from the remote WLC so the switch with the guest anchor WLC doesnt see the MAC address of the wired guest PC.

  • Remote Access Management Console - configuration issue with Network Location Server

    2. If the network location server is running on the Remote Access server, ensure that IIS is running, and that the URL is available.
The remote access server is located on this server. IIS is running. What URL: show I be looking at?
Any other thoughts so I can get remote access working.
l also am getting a remote access error for IPV6, could this be a cause:

    John Lenz

    Hi John,
please follow the steps to reinstall TCP/IP stack.
1.Restart your PC into Safe Mode with Networking.
    2.
Edit your registry. Delete the following keys:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/Winsock
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/Winsock2
    3.
Open the nettcpip.inf file in your %winroot%/inf folder
    (%winroot% is usually c:/windows).
Find the [MS_TCPIP.PrimaryInstall] section. Change the Characteristics value from 0xA0 to 0x80.
Open the properties of the network connection you want to fix. In the General tab, click on the Install button. Click on the Have Disk button, and point the location to %winroot%/inf. After that select TCP/IP (not version 6).
    4.
Now you would notice that you can uninstall TCP/IP!
Do that, then restart the PC.
Go back to your network connection, and install TCP/IP again as per the above. After another reboot, you should be up and running.
I also noted that the XP network repair tool may yank out the ISA 2004 firewall client stuff. Just run the firewall clinet repair or install it again to fix that problem after you did your reboot. Before you do this kind of crazy stuff.
    5.
This along with a TCP/IP reset using the netsh command:
    netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
wish you have a nice thanksgiving too
    Regards,
    Mike

    Hi timh86,
You can't unless it is your own computers. Turn on all your computers and printers. Turn off the Network Lock. Once all are reconnected to the Router, reenable the Network Lock.

  • Major instability with Network Magic for Mac

First of all, I'm a long time LELA user which has been great for quickly gaining an understanding of what is connected to the network.  I like being able to see both connected and disconnected devices.
I thought I would give Network Magic a shot since that is where the future direction is headed.  It has great potential but right now is a major pain in the rear.  I have a rather large home network with roughly 15 devices connected or disconnected at any given time.  At first the network map worked like LELA in that it would show all devices disconnect or connected.  I have two Mac laptops that have different IP and MAC addressses depending on whether they are connected via wired or wireless.
After installing the Mac client on both Mac laptops that's when the frustration began.  It seems that with the Mac client software running on both Macs NM5.5 only wants to recognize one on the map at a time.  Every few minutes I get an alert that a new device has been detected.  But what really happens is the existing laptop drops off the map and the other will pop on.  On the Mac itself it automatically triggers the Network Magic screen to popup which is a major annoyance.  A few minutes will go by and then the process repeats itself.  This laptop will drop of the network map and the other will pop back on.  Again, this pops up the Network Magic window on the 2nd laptop which is an annoyance.
Furthermore, when one laptop drops off the... printers that are shared from another Windows PC are no longer available and accessible on the Mac.  Rest assured... waiting another few minutes the process will repeat itself.
The other major downside is after installing the Mac clients the network map only shows the name of the Mac laptop and is always recognized as one device regardless of IP or MAC address.  I no longer have two seperate IP/MAC devices showing on the map depending on whether it is a wired or wireless connection.    I cannot look at the map and quickly know whether the device is connected via wire or wireless.  Thus when I print a hard copy of all my network devices and settings I dont' get to see the MAC address and details for the non-connected MAC/IP.
Finally, the Mac client does not have the ability to "generate daily computer reports" of the usage.
At this point I am forced to uninstall the Mac clients until a solution for this problem is provided.  I'm glad I checked out the trial version first!

Also for the Linksys folks... I'm not sure how all of the below information is relevant but if it gets you to resolve the problems and add the necessary features then great:

I have run modprobe with the driver (ath9k) and it still won't work.
When connected to Wired, the internet works but it keeps saying 'Setting network address' without moving forward. When trying to connect to wireless it says 'Configuring interface' but then goes back to not connected.
Also, if I put Link-Local as the ipv4 method, it will connect successfully but then disconnect again. The (reasion 'ip-config-unavailable') pops up over and over again.
Also, I've tried wpa_supplicant, netctl, and wicd.

  • Help! I need to restrict wired access by time of day to limit XBOX 360 use

AirPort Extreme N allows timed access restriction for wireless clients, but Apple bewilderingly decided not to make this feature available to "wired" clinents that access the network via ethernet cable. *This permits our teenagers to play XBOX all night long.* HELP! Which third-party vendor makes wired routers that I can use to restrict this access by time of day. NOTE: I will need a router that still supports AppleTalk over ethernet to keep my HP LaserJet working. I tried a LinkSys router but it killed the AppleTalk packets and wreaked havoc with print jobs sent to the HP. I also want to keep the AirPort Extreme N in the network and use it as the sole DHCP server (I specifically need its ability to reserve private IP addresses for some devices), so this complicates where in the network I place the third-party router. Where should this router be, if I need the AirPort Extreme N to serve as DHCP server, and do I need to change any other setting like bridge mode, etc? _I just can't believe Apple would only allow timed access restrictions for wireless clients._ Come on! Maybe this will be fixed in a firmware update?

Thanks, Duane. I was just looking at the PDF instructions for this router, and it offers extensive control of wired time access by IP number.
So: If I (1) put this Belkin device at the top of my network chain, between my cable modem and my AirPort Extreme; and I (2) turn off the DHCP server in the Belkin device but turn on the DHCP server in the AirPort router; and I (3) use the AirPort Extreme to assign a reserved IP adddress to the XBOX; and I (4) use this reserved IP address to restrict the XBOX access by time of day via the Belkin router software... Everthing will work OK?
Seems awfully complicated. Basically, I would be using the Belkin router only as high-octane network switch -- one that permits timed access resrictions for devices at specific IP addresses (and handshakes with the cable modem to provide a unique MAC address to the cable company). Right?
