Wired Internet Problems

I have a black mac book bought in 2007, had a few issues with it before, that were fixed by a repair shop. Now It won't pick up a wired connection at all, when I plug it in to a DSL Modem no lights come on the modem or the mac book its self. My feelings is, its possible the motherboard is going slowly, it is under warranty so I'm thinking they should replace it or repair it.
Anyone else have any problems?

Hi,
The wired Ethernet jack on the MacBook does seem to be more damage-prone than is typical. Be sure to check the MacBook's RJ-45 socket to be sure the gold pins are correctly seated in their plastic comb in the socket. Several users have found the gold pins popped out of place, thus shorting out the connection. If you find some of the pins out of place, you may be able to nudge the pins back into place with a toothpick.
Also, if possible, try a different cord between the Internet modem or router and the MacBook. Generally, you'll need a straight-through cable between the device and the MacBook. Hold up the cable end with the wire at the bottom and the pins facing you. Both ends should have the same color wires to the same pins. Pin One is the left most pin. Usually, the pins will have these color wires:
1 - Orange / white stripe.
2 - White / orange stripe.
3 - Green / white stripe.
4 - White / blue stripe.
5 - Blue / white stripe.
6 - White / green stripe.
7 - Brown / white stripe.
8 - White / brown stripe.
Best wishes getting your connection up and running,
Bill

  • LInksys E2000 Wired internet Problem?

    hello
I had this router for a year now and its been a replacement for internet speed problem we had for a long time and still has a problem.
Ever since we installed this new router, the Internet speed gotten worse in both wired and wireless speed (really worse that can't even load 3 min video on YouTube). We don't know whats causing this slow speed so we talked to Internet service provider and they picked up fine on their end. Our computers and Laptops has no spyware or viruses on them.
My final guess is that we have our modem and router is in the basement, which I notice that it isn't a good idea to be at, and might be the cable wire for PC internet connector to router. But this isn't has to do for wireless speed which is affecting it to make slow speed so I'm not sure about cables.
Coincidently, our internet speed is only good in the morning and slow speed starts in the afternoon.
Can anyone think why is our internet speed is slow?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

If you can change the Ethernet cable through which you are connecting the computer.. As well as update the drivers of the LAN card. For updating the drivers of the LAN card follow the steps:
    # Click on Start --> on the search box type "devmgmt.msc" and click Ok...
    # Device manager window will appear and in that check for the Wired adapter.. Right-click on the name of the Adapter that you want to install and click Update Driver Software…
    # A window will appear asking “How do you want to search for the driver software?".. Click “Automatic Update"..
    # It will automatically update find the latest drivers and will update it...
Check the computer if you are running Windows update on the back ground. If it is running then try to disable it temporarily. Here is the link for how to disable it: http://www.techtalkz.com/windows-7/515869-windows-update-enable-disable-automatic-updates-windows-7-...
As far as wireless is concern you can try the following steps:
A] With the help of Cisco Connect Software (if at all you have installed the router with the help of this software)
1] Open the software and go to the option which says "Router Settings"
2] Then click on the option which says "Advanced Settings" which will take you to the router's configuration page.
3] Then go to the Wireless tab, keep network mode as mixed,
For Channel Settings of 2.4 GHz you can make Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 6, 9, 11..
For Channel Settings of 5 GHz you can make Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 40 or 161...
B] If you haven't installed Cisco Connect then you can log on to the router's user interface using it's default IP address in the browser which is 192.168.1.1 and type in 'admin' as the password leaving the username field blank. This will take you to the router's web interface and then follow steps as mentioned above to make the changes.

  • Wired internet problems. Slowness.

My internet was fine yesterday and now it has gone extremelly slow. The ping is 2520. The Download speed is 120 KBS.
And my Landline phone is also playing up. We called the BT helpline and said they'd check for problems and they'd call back in 5 minutes. It's been 40 minutes, they said to call '151' if they hadn't called back within five minutes, so I did and it just went back to saying 'We'll check for problems and call back in 5 minutes.'
I'm trying to load a youtube video at 240p and it's been loading for 20 minutes and it's only a quarter loaded. Usually it would go to fully loaded in seconds.
Does anyone know how to fix this? If so it would be greatly appreciated if you could help.
    Thanks.
P.S. I've tried resetting my Router and waiting 70 seconds. Done that twice, hasn't helped. Reset my computer, hasn't helped.

Here are some helpful (I actually did find them helpful!) tips from BT: http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/35079
There may also be some other stuff you wanna check out like what affects your broadband inside your home: http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/12666
It is worth checking for sources of interference.
    Electrical interference
As a general rule, it's a good idea to stand your modem or router on a desk or table, and not put it on the floor.
If you can, keep electrical devices five feet or more away from the router, especially:
    Halogen desk lamps with dimmers
    Any electrical dimmer switch
    Stereo or PC speakers
    Televisions, monitors and microwave ovens.
AC power cords running parallel to the telephone line
Electronic insect electrocution devices (bug zappers)
    Low quality 900MHz cordless telephones
Any other emitter of high frequency electromagnetic radiation.
    Radio interference
In rare cases, faulty or poorly designed electrical equipment inside or close to your home can emit excessive radio interference that affects your broadband connection. To work out whether this is a problem in your case, consider:
Does your connection disappear when some electrical equipment is turned on or used and re-appear as soon as the equipment is turned off?
If your neighbours have broadband, ask them whether they are experiencing a similar pattern of connection failure to yours, as this could indicate that there is a source of interference nearby.
    Sources of interference
If you can identify the faulty equipment that's causing the interference, it may be possible to replace it or turn it off when you need to be online.
Faulty electrical equipment (usually due to a faulty or failing component within the power supply):
    Televisions
    Video recorders
    Satellite receivers
PC equipment such as monitors, printers and scanners
    Electric central heating
    Faulty lighting equipment:
    Fluorescent strips
Seasonal lights (for example, the fairy lights on your Christmas tree), usually when the lights are in flashing mode
    Garden lights
    External "Hi/Lo" security lights
    Street lights
Spotlights used to illuminate the outsides of large buildings
Can you comfirm if your connected at the master socket? Because if not you need to go there and connect to the test socket which is the hidden socket hidden behind the split faceplate:
And also do a phone line test by dialling 17070 and pressing option 2 for the quiet line test, in the test socket without the broadband being connected.
Also this may help you if you do connect via the extensions:  The bell wire, such a nasty little thing! It's always connected to terminal three, and can be a great little menace to your broadband, causing it to interfere greatly with the speed:
Here's a guide on how to take it out using the kits site (great site aswell!) http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/socket.htm .

  • VERY slow wireless, FAST wired internet problem

Someone... PLEASE help me. I just spent 2 hours w/apple, and they couldn't fix it.
I have the airport extreme base station. It was working FINE, until a few day/a week ago. Now when I connect using my airport card in my MBP or my iMac, it get about 17KB/sec. If I go wired, I get almost 2MB/sec. Apple coudn't help me. Is there anyway around this? My dell laptop (for work) connects to the extreme base station and gets about 2MB/sec, so it has to do with something on the Apple side.
Any suggestions? I'd hate to go and buy another router and having to scrap this expensive router and the airport express I bought. That's $300 right down the freakin' drain....

First, double-check the AirPort settings on the iMac. They should be nearly identical to those of the MBP.
Then, make sure that your iMac has the latest AirPort updates applied.
    Other things to try...
    - Create a new "clean" OS X user account, and then, logon as that user. (Note: You will want to keep this new account "clean," i.e., don't use it daily or add programs so that you can use it for any future troubleshooting session as needed.)
    - Create a new AirPort Location, and then, switch to this location.
    - Check Network Port Configurations and verify that AirPort is at the top of the list. If it's not, drag it to the top. While there, see if there are any other ports enabled that you are not using (Modem, Bluetooth, etc.) and disable them.
    - Remove AirPort configuration (.plist) files. Start by moving the AirPort preference files to a safe location. OS X will rebuilt these files after you restart the computer. The particular files to try are (I's assuming that you have OS X 10.4+ on the iMac):
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
    - preferences.plist
    - NetworkInterfaces.plist
    - com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
Start with the first one, restart the computer and check the wireless performance. If no improvement, move on to the next, and so on. Remember to move them to a "safe" location first, just in case you need to restore them.

  • Problem connecting my macbook pro to a wired internet connection via ethernet cable adapter

I am having a problem connecting my macbook to a wired internet connection in an area in my workplace where there is no wifi.  The macbook works fine on the same internet connection via wifi in other parts but when I add it as a wired connection it doesn't show any connection.  I have turned off wifi to make sure that it is not trying to pick up a poor connection but I still can't get this to work.  I think I am trying to set up the connection properly but can't be completely sure.  Any help would be appreciated.

Open System Preferences>Network and make sure Ethernet is selected. If it is, open Advanced Settings (at the bottom of the Network window). Click on the TCP/IP tab. Configure IPv4 should be set to "Using  DHCP".
Configure IPv6 should be set to "Automatically". When those are set click the "Renew DHCP Lease" button

  • Weird internet problem / ssl connection error, site loads in safari not in firefox or other way around

I really can't figure out this problem. Search the internet tried all kinds of things, nothing help so far.
I have a Macbook Pro (Lion originally installed) running on Mavericks (all latest updates). SSD installed and the DVD tray is replaced by the original HDD.
The laptop wasn't running very smooth anymore so decided to give it a fresh Mavericks install (even though I know it's not really necessary for mac, it helped, everything is much faster except a weird internet problem came up).
After freshly installing Mavericks I couldn't get into my google account anymore, just wouldn't load. Tried Safari (use this normally) and Firefox and Chrome, this last was gave a SSL connection error, both Safari and FF said the website couldn't be loaded because the server didn't respond. For Gmail I use Mailplane which is just stuck on a white page. I tried repairing the keychain, repaired disk and disk permissions, cleaned browsers, turned off firewall and antivirus (Shopos) started in safe mode, checked time settings which were all good. Nothing of this helped. I even ended up creating a usb bootdisk for Mavericks, formatted the disk and reinstalled from the start just Mavericks and nothing else, started Safari, still the same problem. As even this didn't help I figured it's not worth reinstalling all software so put back my backup.
Now I ended up somehow only being able to use Gmail normally in Firefox, Chrome still gives SSL error and Safari can load the inbox, but I can't open any messages. I get the error there is a problem with the connection. If I try in Basic HTML mode it surprisingly does work.
You would say, just use Firefox, finished...but the thing is that sometimes random websites won't load in Firefox, when I load the same site in Safari it works perfectly.
O yes, I also tried the connect to my iPhone and use the Cellular data network, then it's no problem using Gmail in Safari normally. You would say it's a router problem, but I have another Macbook Pro (just one model later running Mountain Lion) this one works perfectly with every browser. Also my iPhone does everyting logged into the WiFi network.
You can understand I really have no clue what's going on here, I don't see any logic. I can only think of a hardware problem in my Macbook, but don't see how that could cause these problems.
I hope someone is ably to help me ?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Wired internet doesn't work, even after fresh install?

So i'm fairly new to the linux stuff, but for some reason I cannot get my wired internet (eth0) to work. Bear with me because I've got a decent tale to give to fill you in:
After successfully installing archlinux for the first time, I was able to get the internet and everything working, but my boot manager was messed up. So I got a friend to fix that problem for me and I started updating my system through pacman. After successfully updating and changing the pacman mirror files I started downloading/installing gnome (and gnome-extra). I left it overnight and when I woke up in the morning all hell broke loose. After rebooting my computer and logging back into arch I found a number of my bash commands no longer worked (ifconfig, iwconfig, halt, shudown, reboot, dhcpcd, just to name a few I remember) so I had to manually turn off my labtop. At that point I decided to reinstall linux.
After reinstalling linux my network troubles began and from that point on I can no longer connect to the pacman servers and my eth0 times out upon booting into linux every time (for those of you wondering, yes I did change in rc.conf the eth0="dhcp" like I was supposed to). I get a transient failure or something of the likes. The wierdest thing is this:
When trying to reinstall linux using the ftp install I can configure my network (step 0), but when I get to trying to connect to a server and downloading the packages I fail to connect to the servers! Can someone please tell me what is going on?
Just for a few more backgrounds, I am installing arch64 on an intel core-duo processor with it dual-booting with windows vista ultimate. I don't think any of this is the problem considering I had it working once up a time, but now for some reason it doesn't work so i'm hoping for my wiser archlinux users to help me out.
EDIT: In a new turn of developments it seems my wired connection is now malfunctioning. Although just 5 hours ago at a friends house (when I was still having linux network problems) it worked just fine. My network card is a Intel(r) PRO/1000 PL card. Can my linux half screw up my windows half ethernet card and vice versa?
Just tried to uninstall and then reinstall my ethernet card and my wired connection still doesn't work. Any suggestions?

Well after many hours of toil, it seems that it has now decided to work. Still have no clue why my wired connection failed for that duration of time, but whatever. Archlinux is installed and running fine so I suppose all ends well.

  • Very Strange Internet Problems

I own a MacBook Pro 15.4 Inch that I purchased about a year and a half ago. I recently upgraded to Leopard and have all the latest updates. I am from the US, and when I am home my internet works fine. However, I am on travel to Seoul, South Korea right now and am having a very strange internet problem.
As far as I can tell, the URLs that I type in to my browser are, sparodially, not translated correctly into the webpages that they are supposed to represent. This problem is probably effective 75% of the time, and the rest of the time my internet works roughly correctly. For instance, when I enter http://www.google.com, instead of being taken to the Google homepage, I am taking to the homepage of Jammin Beats DJ Service, an obscure website about a company in northern Pennsylvania. The actual URL of this website is http://www.jamminbeats.com, but when my internet is malfunctioning, 'jamminbeats' is for all intensive purposes replaced by 'google' (that is, it applies not only to the main page, but to sub pages, so "http://www.google.com/weddings" takes you to "http://www.jamminbeats.com/weddings" and etc). For most other webpages, one of two things happens. Either I am taken to the correct page but it is displayed without any images or frames (just the html text and links), or I am taken to a blank page with the header "Under Construction", which I assume is the default for a page that doesn't exist. This is why it seems as though the URLs are simply being interpretted erroneously.
This problem occurs when connecting both to the wireless and the wired internet at my hotel, and it occurs on both Safari and Firefox, so it is not a connection-specific or browser-specific problem. It may be a problem with the hotel's internet, and as of yet I have not had a chance to test the computer at another location. However, a colleague using an IBM computer has had no problems, and I am currently on a Samsung machine in the business center of the hotel and it is working correctly as well. I have searched extensively online for a similar problem but have come up empty handed, and more than anything, I am confused about what might be causing this problem. The strangest thing is that a fraction of the time, the internet functions normally, but it is usually roughly 15 minutes out of every hour, and eventually I am inevitably taken back to Jammin Beats.
I am a computer science graduate but I still have no idea what would cause this problem. At first I thought it might be a hacker, but if it is, he or she has been at it consistently for 3 days now, and only seems to be targeting my computer. Any ideas or solutions would be greatly appreciated, as I have been forced to resort to the hotel's business center for checking email, doing work, etc. Thanks in advance.

I did consider that, as I was in Beijing last week and there are a number of censored sites. However, in Korea I have had problems with very basic sites like facebook, wall street journal, google, yahoo, Korean google, my hotel's webpage, etc. Further, I have successfully gotten all of these sites to load seemingly at random, and can access them without problems on other computers. The only disconnect seems to be between my MBP and the internet, not between Korean internet and the web. I have toyed around with the network settings, and although sometimes after switching from "Automatic" to a fixed connection I get some sites to work, it usually only lasts a short time and eventually the same sites stop working. I reset my cache regularly to make sure I'm not getting sent to cached sites, but this also doesn't help. Further, my Apple Mail, Skype and AIM accounts jump between being connected and disconnected randomly as well. Again, this is isolated to my own computer, which is why I'm so confused.

  • I keep getting errors when I'm on wired internet

    Hello,
For two weeks now, my internet isn't working properly anymore. When I'm on WiFi, I don't have problems using Firefox, but when I plug in my cable for wired internet, Firefox starts to give a lot of different errors.
A couple of the errors it gives me is:
    sec_error_reused_issuer_and_serial
    sec_error_library_failure
There are more different errors, some about SSL.
Some pages load for like 20%, but most of the pages don't load at all.
I've already tried to re-install the browser, use another browser, scan for malware, but it don't really work.
I would love to hear a working solution so I can properly use FireFox again!

You can remove all data stored in Firefox from a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History > Show All History" or "View > Sidebar > History") or via the about:permissions page.
Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox from that domain like bookmarks, cookies, passwords, cache, history, and exceptions, so be cautious and if you have a password or other data from that domain that you do not want to lose then make sure to backup this data or make a note.
You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of the involved files.
It doesn't have any lasting effect, so if you revisit such a 'forgotten' website then data from that website will be saved once again.
Try to rename the cert8.db file in the Firefox profile folder to cert8.db.old or delete the cert8.db file to remove intermediate certificates that Firefox has stored.
If that helped to solve the problem then you can remove the renamed cert8.db.old file.
Otherwise you can rename (or copy) the cert8.db.old file to cert8.db to restore the previous intermediate certificates.
Firefox will automatically store intermediate certificates when you visit websites that send such a certificate.
If that didn't help then remove or rename secmod.db (secmod.db.old) as well.
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Director: Show Folder (Linux: Open Director; Mac: Show in Finder)

  • All Kinds Of Internet Problems - PLEASE HELP!

So I've been having all kinds of internet problems in my house. I'm almost positive part of it is router related but I just (somewhat scientifically) proved it's also related to my mini. I used speedtest.net to test both my brand new mac mini and my 2006 macbook pro running Leopard 10.5.1 (fresh install). Here's the specs and speed test results:
    _*2006 Macbook Pro*_
Intel Core Duo 2.0GHz, 2GB RAM
    OSX 10.5.1
    *Average Results:*
    Download - 4.72 Mb/s
    Upload - 0.84 Mb/s
    Ping - 24-38ms (range)
    _*2009 Mac Mini*_
    Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53GHz, 4GB RAM
    OSX 10.6.2
    Results:
    Download - 0.78Mb/s
    Upload - 0.97Mb/s
    Ping - 15ms
    *AFTER PRAM RESET:*
    DL - 2.85Mb/s
    UL - 0.98 Mb/s
    Ping 22ms
*these were the BEST results and far above the average I got
    Router:
    Netgear WGR614v9 running latest firmware
WEP 128bit security B/G combined broadcast
We were running WPA2 security but when I switched to WEP everyone in the house noticed a speed increase.
The tests were run within a span of 10 minutes and both computers were about 2 feet away from each other.
Can someone please explain to me why my nearly 4 year old MBP with an outdated OSX is spanking my brand new mini?

I apologize ahead of time as I am not sure I can answer your question, but I would like to ask you a question if I could...
Are you using your mini with Ethernet cable or Wireless. Not that there's a real difference in your case but sometimes if you're running with a Wired Ethernet cable on a unit that also has wireless, it helps to turn off the wireless.
And on the other hand if you are not running with Ethernet cable on the mini, you might think about trying that.

  • Wired internet access fail

    I have a WRT160N, running XP, I have:
    Reset it
    Upgraded firmware
    Downgraded firmware
    Powered down my network
    Powered down my computers
The problem is that I can use the wireless, but not the wired internet.  I am using two different computers: one wired, one wireless.  The wireless one can get online, can access the settings (192.168.1.1), the wired one can access the settings (192.168.1.1), but cannot get online.  If, however, I run the newest firmware, both can access the settings, but neither can access the internet.
Let me know what you think.
    thanks,

Check your wired computer's LAN ip address, sn, dg
Check if it has DNS, maybe it doesnt have dns.
With IP address and without DNS, you can access 192.168.1.1

  • Internet problems on my macbook pro and ipod touch with camera.

    Hi,
For the last week or so I have been experiencing internet problems with my macbook and iPod touch with camera. I'll be online and clicking different news articles and suddenly the address bar will start to open a link but will not complete it. So what I do is go up to the signal bar and click turn off airport then turn it back on and that will temporarily solve the problem. Same solution on my iPod, I turn off the wifi and turn it back on. It is very frustrating for both devices. I will include as much info as possible. I have a NetGear RangeMax wireless router model WPN824v3. I was wondering if changing the wireless settings on that would solve my problem. I have the channel on 9. Mode on b and g. Security option on WPA-PSK [TKIP] with password. I would be happy for any help with this issue. Also I hope I'm following correct posting protocol. I haven't been on this forum in a while.

    Sig,
Thanks for the advice. I finally tried a solution after doing nothing. LoL. What I did do was change the channel the router was on from 9 to 7. I think I've done something like this in the past when I had slow internet and that worked out well too. I thought that would help and so far so good. Not an interruption so far but we shall see. To the guy or girl who expressed that they had the same problem as me I would try changing the channel of your router like I did. I will monitor the situation and see if it totally solved my problem or not and keep this thread updated. Thanks people

Some Internet providers that limit access to a single device at a time do so by the device's hardware MAC address. If your ISP is one of those, you may be able to substitute the MAC address of your AirPort Express base station for the computer. I would suggest that you contact them to find out if this is allowable.
