Wired keyboard problem on 27" iMac

27" iMac doesn't find keyboard on startup. I purchased it last August 2013 with a wired keyboard instead of wireless. Since then its happened about 4 times that it will not recognise the keyboard....says theres nothing attached - and its wired!! It seems to fix itself after about an hour (max) but I don't know how?? This is a nightmare as I can't work and its unreliable.

I have this problem also.  I unplug it from my USB port and replug it in and that works.  But I would like to find a permanent fix.

  • Aluminium wired keyboard problem with iMac

Just bought an Aluminium wired keyboard for my 2.66ghz iMac 20". When I press shift 3 for the £ sign, I get a #
If I press alt and 3, I get the £. How can I get this working as it shows on the keyboard?

Ah, got it working properly, changed the input language from US to British. If only that would work with Google!
But, any idea where on the keyboard I got a smiley face from when i was checking which keys produced which symbols with the alt then shift keys.

  • With a wired keyboard and a 2014 iMac I cannot select multiple items which are not next to each other

I have recently changed from Windows 7 desktop to a new iMac running Mavericks.  I have chosen a wired keyboard as I like  the usual Delete key function.
I cannot find out how to select several items which are not next to each other (e.g. words in Pages).  The well known method in Windows, which is repeated in the the Apple Finder Help screen, does not work.  Would be grateful for advice

    Hi JBowfin,
If I am understanding your question correctly, I believe that I have an article that will address this question for you:

  • Apple Wired keyboard problem

hello i have mac pro purchased  in 2012..after cleaning up with thinner and dry it under the light for 5  to 10 minutes..its stopped working.. how ever in windows 7 it is getting detected in device and scanner option.but none keys are working....previous problem with double key..

Can't offer a mechanical fix for broken component. You could call Apple's Express Lane and arrange for a replacement. I believe all items come with a 90l-day warranty.

My Imac got shut down and is locked (password protected) I get a message showing keyboard not found. I now cannot access my computer.

You need to use a wired keyboard to boot the iMac.

Intel iMac; upgraded adobe flash; bluetooth keyboard no longer pairs but magic mouse still OK. With Bluetooth switched on the screen splits into 4 areas and open windows seperate and shrink. Switch off Bluetooth and problem disappears and iMac works OK with plug-in keyboard and mouse

    Hi, Derek -
...the screen splits into 4 areas and open windows seperate and shrink.
Sounds like Spaces is being activated somehow. With the wired keyboard and mouse in use, select the Exposé & Spaces control pane in System Preferences, click the choice in that pane for Spaces. See what the settings are. There are some activation settings in that pane - by default, F8 activates it.
It could be that the bluetooth keyboard has some stuck keys and is activating Spaces; or that the activation command has somehow been reset to something that the bluetooth mouse, or bluetooth itself, is triggering.

  • Brand New iMac and wired keyboard not working

I just bought a new iMac.The wired keyboard seems to work, the mouse is plugged into the keyboard and that works, and I can, somewhat make changes to the volume and other small changes. The ESC key works (I can turn off VoiceOver)but... I can not even get the computer up and going. I can not put in my name or other registration information.
Any ideas if the keyboard has some kind of other settings that I need to turn off. There is no software or anything else in the Mac that I know of. It is brand new and just arrived today.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

I'm so sorry. I know this a bummer. But better to take it back. When you take it in, if they boot it and get it to work, make sure and shut down the iMac, wait about ten seconds and press the power button. Make sure it boots to the Desktop and that your keyboard functions as it should. Just make absolutely sure it works before you bring it back home. In fact, since you could not get through the registration process, perhaps they will go through that with you since had problems with it. Something isn't communicating between the iMac and the keyboard. Could be the USB ports, software/hardware ... hopefully they'll repair it to your satisfaction or replace it.

  • Wired Keyboard USB Power Supply Problem

    Hello,
I'm a proud owner of an iMac 27" which I ordered with the Apple Wired Keyboard because it was equipped with two additional USB Ports.
I'm using the Astro Gaming Astro A40 with their Mixamp and it works perfectly fine if I plug it into the keyboard.
Now I installed Bootcamp with Windows 7 Professional and it tells me the power supply in the keyboard is to low for my headset and my Mixamp.
Does anybody know a solution for that problem?
Why does Windows cry about that while Mac is perfectly fine with this.
I hope somebody can help me. Thank You
    With best regards
    ChickenDuy

    From
    Support FAQ - Astro Gaming
For PC Users: Much like discrete graphics, audio, or physics hardware free up CPU cycles and make our games run faster, the USB drivers built into the MixAmp provide a simple plug and play solution to offloading communication and music duties to the MixAmp.
My guess would be that these drivers are not loaded in OSX. When you run Windows via bootcamp, these drivers are loaded. Based on the function described, they draw more power from your USB bus than they would in the OS X environment. Yet the machine is still only willing to supply 500 mA to the particular hub. I think, therein lies the problem. Or, atleast, a theory.

  • Late 2012 iMac Keyboard Problems

Since I got the new 27" late 2012 iMac I am having keyboard issues.
The issue mainly revolves around the number pad but sometimes the entire keyboard is affected.
So I will be using the Bluetooth wireless keyboard and mouse and everything will be fine.
Then all of a sudden the keyboard does not work. Sometime a reboot fixes it but sometimes not.
Or when I hook up the wired keyboard all of a sudden the number pad on the right does not work but the plus and minus keys do.
It is very strange and odd.
When I called Apple tech support they said go get a new keyboard so I did.
Then when it happened again with the wired keyboard being the problem I took it down to the store and they said because I had bluetooth on it could have been communicating with the wireless keyboard and getting confused.
Now when trying to use the wireless keyboard I have issues and when I use the wired keyboard I have issues.
    Any other suggestions?

just an update....when i hit the right command key it respond normal (cmd v cmd c...etc) but when i hit the left command key it shows the x and two commands pressed as well as it delete what i'm working on i.e like backspace but takes out everything at once
    thank you

    Hi Moe,
Sounds mostly likje a bad KB, do you have another to test with?
    Or...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Do I require wired mouse and keyboard to bootcamp on imac 2012 with bluetooth mouse and keyboard?

have just purchased a late 2012 imac which I want to bootcamp. Have read on some posts that during the process you lose the use of mouse and keyboard as they are bluetooth and windows does not have the drivers, so you need a wired mouse and keyboard to bootcamp the imac.
Is this correct as there is nothing in the Apple bootcamp guide mentioning this.
would appreciate some assistance on this point.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
In theory, you don't need a USB mouse and keyboard because the iMac can detect the Bluetooth ones during startup (difficult but it can). If you are new, I recommend you to get a USB mouse and keyboard to install Windows in Boot Camp, so installation will be easier and you won't have any problem to start up in OS X later.
With the USB keyboard  and mouse, it's as simple as following the Apple's steps to install Windows on your Mac > http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.8.pdf It's very important to download the Windows support software, which you will need to make Windows work correctly

  • Problem with ALT codes on Apple Wired Keyboard

May I just note, I have posted this in the "Boot Camp" forum, but run the normal Windows 7 on my computer. I was unable to find a forum purely for Apple hardware.
I am using a Apple Wired Keyboard (MB110B/B) -- British-bought -- on a Windows 7 PC, and I are having some issues with ALT codes. The array of symbols I have to type (pi, sigma, etc) becomes tiresome to insert via the Character Map (on Win7). Basically, entering "alt" (left handside) then 227 does not insert "π" but rather "Ò". alt + 228 (Σ) inserts õ
I don't know if this problem is common for Apple keyboard users on Windows, but is there a way to alter this.
    Thanks, Jordan.

For a third opinion, be cautious of using a dishwasher as the temperature can get pretty high. If the spill is on the 456 on the number pad, you can try holding the keyboard vertically, soak just that part in distilled water for several minutes to disolve the spill material. Run some denatured (rubbing) alcohol over the numpad, then dry with a hair dryer.
You could also try to remove the key caps...slip dental floss under the key caps in two loops, one from the top one from the bottom. Pull the key caps off one at a time, the wipe the area clean...see if there is any material sticking that needs to be cleaned off.
I do not know what keyboard you have or how it does the switching, but most keyboards today do not use mechanical switches. The switches are sealed capacitance switches so if you clean all the material from the keyboard it may work again.
Or, if you don't feel like going to this much trouble, a visit to your friendly Apple Retailer to purchase a new one may be a good idea.

  • MS Wired Keyboard 600 and iMac

On an iMac 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo 4GB RAM, I'm using the MicroSoft Wired Keyboard 600. Often on booting/rebooting--or even sometimes after waking from sleep--keyboard won't work. Unplugging USB connector doesn't always work, so I have to shut down and start all over. Not using Intellitype. Suggestions? Thank you.

You downloaded what Microsoft's menu based webpage suggests should be the right drivers. Does it add a system preference to control your keyboard in Apple menu -> System Preferences? Does it add an application or a utility in your Applications folder? If neither, post here to find out if it is compatible with your version of 10.6:

  • Function keys on new wired keyboard for old iMac don't workdon't work

Apple replaced my original wired keyboard when keys had stopped working, but with the new wired keyboard the function keys don't work as the symbols on them indicate.  My concern is F10-F12 which are supposed to control volume.  F10 shows all open windows; F11 romoves open windowns from screen; F12 shows ttime, date, temperature, etc, like the top button on the mouse.  I have tried suggested ways to fix this through System Preferences, Keyboard/Mouse but none works.
Can anyone solve this problem for me?

I have the exact same problem.  My old keyboard unfortunately died after spilling fluid onto it.
I purchased the same keyboard today.
Everything works with it except I have the same problem as described here:  "

  • IPod,  iTunes Syncing on Leopard + Apple Wired Keyboard = Hang and problems

Sorry for the cryptic topic title but I search liked crazy and through several different sites I managed to hobble together a configuration that reproduces my problem. Maybe those terms will helps others...
Anyway, I have Mac Pro with OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and a 5G video iPod. Just recently during iTunes syncing it began to randomly hang quite early on in the process. No itunes is still responsive but it just stays on the same song forever, never making any progress. I did restore, auto vs. manual, disk space enable/disable every combination of iTunes and iPod settings I could try.
The crazy part is that I HAVE fixed the problem but I wanted Apple and others to know what to do and that is needs to be fixed correctly
Recently (same time iTunes started failing) I got the new Apple wired keyboard (love it!) but it IS the problem (or rather the combination of stuff). If I just unplug that keyboard during the iTunes sync it works every time, plug it back in and it hangs again next time iTunes syncs.
So maybe someone else is having this problem, I hope you find this forum and I hope Apple already knows about this glitch.
    Thanks!

I'm only going to tackle one of your issues; that of "recently added" playlists being whacked out when added to iPhones/iPods.
Here's the issue: You set up a smart playlist with a "recently added" criterion. The playlist looks fine in iTunes, and it displays all the recent music you've added to your library properly.
You then sync to your iPhone, and low and behold, all the tracks in that playlist do not match anything that had shown in iTunes. Believe it or not, this is a really old iTune bug. If memory serves me, it goes back to iTunes 6 or maybe earlier.
There are two known work arounds:
    1) you turn off "live updating." This is very poor work around, because most people use a recently added playlist to automagically add their newest music to their device. Turning live updating off defeats the point.
2)create a second smart playlist that points to the first one. What I mean is, if you have a playlist called "Newest 250 tracks" and that is the smart playlist that shows up incorrectly on your iphone, then set up a second smart playlist called "Newest 250 tracks iPhone" and the only criterion in it, is that is populates from playlist "Newest 250 tracks." It will then look identical to your first playlist, but because it doesn't contain a "recently added" criterion in itself, it will avoid the bug. So sync to that second tiered playlist, and all is well.
Yes it's stupid to have to make a second "meta" playlist for every recently added playlist, but c'est la vie.
