Wired keyboard up arrow not working in finder

My keyboard has all of a sudden decided to, for lack of a better word, spaz out!
I have a 2011/2012 21.5 inch iMac (intel), with a wired keyboard (with numerical pad) and mouse. When I'm on the desktop (finder) and i select a folder, the up button on the keyboard moves 'down' (one folder) and then won't move again. The down button and sideways buttons work fine, and it appears all the other keys do to. When I go into a program like safari the up arrow works fine,  I can scroll pages up and down without a problem.
The issue first began when i was working in indesign, and I went to the text palette and tried to manually tap up the point size, but instead it opened the swatches palette, and I couldn't understand why the up key wasn't working. I quit indesign and as this was happening I was doing something in the finder and noticed the problem there too.
I shut down all the program's and restarted. This didn't work, so I came exploring on apple discussions. I rebooted the computer in safe mode but that didn't work either. I searched in library > preferences for a com.apple.finder.plist (as I saw this mentioned in some discussions) but there was no such file living in the preferences.
I'm really not sure what to do to rectify this.. If anyone could help that would be super awesome! Thanks in advance!
Penny

Also, I forgot to add, that in iTunes and spotify the up button works, but as it does it makes that error-y sound as if it is not working (even though it is)

  • Apple wired keyboard - certain keys not working with shift

I treated myself to a new Apple wired keyboard MB110B/A for my mac mini.
My previous keyboard worked fine, however the new keyboard causes the computer to enter the Hardware Test mode every time the computer is restarted. The computer only starts normally without the keyboard connected (or with my old keyboard connected).
Once the computer has started, if I plug the new keyboard in, it appears to work normally with the following exceptions. The following keys do not register when the "shift" key is pressed: 2, w, s, x. This fault does not occur with my old keyboard.
As these keys are in a line, I think there may be a wiring fault inside the keyboard. If so, would this explain the computer entering Hardware Test mode every time it is started with the keyboard connected?
    Thanks in advance.

Definitely sounds like a hardware fault in the keyboard to me. I assume it's the same whichever USB port it's connected to? (and if you plug it into another Mac, too)?
Of course, as that keyboard is glued together in final assembly, it's completely unrepairable.
If it's a reproducible fault (and new anyway): take/send it back for replacement. You shouldn't have any trouble with Apple arguing.

  • Wired Keyboard Certain Keys not Working?

The keys 3 e d do not work.
It however does work in Bootcamp.
The keyboard was functioning fine yesterday.
I have not spilled anything on it. Restarted my iMac multiple times, changed usb ports, and unplugged everything else but my mouse and keyboard.
    Nothing fixed it so far.

  • Wired Keyboard some keys not working

    Hi there,
have been using an external wired apple keyboard on macbook pro retina for 6 month.
Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad - English (USA)
Suddenly 3 keys just stopped working:
    u / m / j
checked the keyboard on an old macbook from 2008 - all keys are all working fine on this one.
Any idea what it could be???
    thanks a lot in advance.

    Hello bungalow2014
Check out the article below for further troubleshooting options for your keyboard. One other thing to check is to open Keyboard Viewer to see if there is anything else being pressed while hitting those keys.
One or more keys on the keyboard do not respond

  • Wired Keyboard - Comma Key not working

I have the older model keyboard that came with my system and my comma key suddenly isn't working. Is there any fix to this? I've popped the key off - cleaned it - tested the little button inside using a pencil tip to press it down - restarted my computer - and nothing. Still doesn't work. All other keys work fine.
Any thoughts on how I can fix this problem or do I have to purchase a whole new keyboard? BTW - there's no Apple Store within 100 miles to take it in and I can't ship it in for repair (have to have it for work). Any help or ideas??

Keyboards as recent as yours tend to have a large rubber mat that provides the key "feel" and spring-back. The key "switches" are all printed on a circuit-board-like layer inside the keyboard, and there is no such thing as replacing a keyswitch.
I think your most practical option is to obtain a spare keyboard and then send yours for repair. When it comes back, you will have a spare in case of emergency.
Because new Macs come with a keyboard, and some users insist on a different keyboard, there is some traffic in new/lightly-used keyboards on eBay and similar venues. Really old keyboards (like ADB keyboards) go for US$10 plus about that much again for shipping. I have no idea what the market in recent keyboards is like.

It's a new machine - and the Thunderbolt Display is meant to work with it. You need to just make an appointment at your local Apple Store and have them fix whatever is wrong.
If you like, you could always try a SMC reset and a PRAM/NVRAM reset to see if either of those will get your keyboard back in working order...

  • Rocketfish Bluetooth Keyboard RF-BTKB2 not working under Windows 7 64 bit

Rocketfish Bluetooth Keyboard RF-BTKB2 not working under Windows 7 64 bit
Anyone had successs in this or another Bluetooth Keyboard after a bit of a struggle?  What did you do to get it working?  When I Add Device in Bluetooth it sees the keyboard but enlessly scans for it when I try to select and connect.  The Rocketfish Bluetooth mouse worked just fine.

My friend, i have both, the bluetooth mouse and keyboard here that your talking about. and the keyboard was a struggle to pair with the windows 7 64 bit.... i think i spent 2 days working with it. and i didnt try anything special, i just kept trying to pair
it, and unplugging the dongle and working with it... and after a while. it worked... Lately though, i have been looking into getting a wired mouse and keyboard becuase of the delays and sleep time i have with my current keyboard(rocketfish). supposidly there
is a way around the delays but it disables all the options on your keyboard. IE the media buttons, and web browsing features. and my mouse keeps dieing off too....
Also, after researching these products more, i found that alot of people experienced similar problems with them, Being delays and mouse failure. Even with fresh batteries and all. The products werent meant to be used long term(2-3 years) for extensive use...
I dont know about you but i thinki paid 100 bucks for the pair so thats only 25 bucks a year... Which is kinda silly considering i coulda got a better one that wont cough up on me.
If anyone reading this finds a good wireless keyboard that doesnt delay, and a mouth that doesnt delay...(my biggest concern). Please mention it. i am very interested in.

  • Wireless keyboard Home/End not working

I apologize if this has been answered before but I searched and didn't find it. I also apologize if this is a stupid question but I just got my first Mac 3 days ago.
My problem is with the Home/End shortcuts on the wireless keyboard (Fn-Left Arrow and Fn-Righ Arrow) not working in Firefox or TextEdit (and possibly other apps). The Page Up/Page Down shortcut (Fn-Up Arrow and Fn-Down Arrow) work fine as does the forward delete (Fn-Delete). Am I missing something? Is there another way to get the to end and beginning of line in the URL and single text lines or multiple line text boxes of Firefox? What about TextEdit? The Home/End combination does work in Entourage/Word but considering the source it doesn't surprise me that those apps don't work like every other app on my machine.

Command-<left arrow> takes you to the beginning of the line and Command-<right arrow> goes to the end. Command-<up arrow> and Command-<down arrow> take you to the top and bottom of the document respectively.

  • Keyboard: some keys not working

Some keys not working.  Need help/suggestions.  Not great with computers so PLEASE give details/steps re: how to do what you suggest - thanks!
Details: intel based iMac running snow leopard 10.6.8.  Apple wireless/bluetooth keyboard (came with the iMac).
Some keys suddenly stopped working:  space, tab, capLock, option key to the right of space bar (one on the left works), down arrow
The problem happens in various programs (safari, pages, etc)
The keyboard is fine on another iMac
A different keyboard is fine on this/the involved iMac
(nutshell: keyboard works fine - computer works fine, unless they're together)
    Here's what's been tried/checked:
-checked the settings for universal access ("mouse keys" are off) and checked for any bluetooth keyboard shortcuts.
-in system preferences "speech" is not set for "speak selected text when the key is pressed" - this is not checked/selected
-tried creating a new user but had the same issue so it's computer-wide rather than just a user account
-removed the keyboard and reconnected (using the +/- signs and "disconnect" and putting in a new code of numbers to pair keyboard)
    -language/text is set for english
-did the keyboard viewer and the keys in question did NOT highlight when pressed (but don't forget the entire keyboard is fine on a different computer so thekeys aren't the issue)
-"slow keys" is turned off re: keyboard in system preferences.
Any help is welcomed.  It's frustrating knowing the keyboard works, just not with this computer.  Please help.  Many thanks!

yes - not sure how this works...if you can see my original post there are a lot of details in there.  If you can't...
nutshell: the keyboard works on a different iMac
a different keyboard works on this/the involved iMac
I tried to create a different user and the keyboard still does not work so it is computer-wide
I also removed the keyboard from the computer (using the +/- symbols and disconnecting and then repairing it.  The problem remained
Thanks for any help.  It's crazy that the keyboard is fine and the computer is fine but together, there's the problem.
    Thank you!!!

  • Keyboard and mouse not working

both keyboard and mouse not working. I have changed batteries and checked drivers  please help..  thank you
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Thanks for the information, that is exactly what I needed.
If you are having the enter issue when using the wired KB from your old computer that sounds software related with the blog site.
What web browser do you use when on that website?
Connect your wireless equipment back and if you continue to have the issue with the letters repeating then you should inquire about a replacement for what is referred to as "sticky keys".  With it being a new unit this shouldn't be an issue.
Let me know if you have other questions.

  • HP notebook keyboard and mouse not working

    Hi
I spilled tea on my notebook. Now the system boots but keyboard & mouse do not work. Therefore I am not able to
login at the windows screen. When I hardboot, on pressing esc it goes to boot menu, but then the keyboard stops working
so I cannot go to safe mode or recovery mode. I also tried pressing F11 to enter BIOS, but it does not work.
I can however access it via LAN and since I had shared the C drive, I was able to recover the data. Do you have any idea
how I can restore the system now ? I do not have the recovery disks.
Are there any particular function keys to press while booting ?
Thanks a lot for your help

    Thoughts on a Soggy System:
Have you tried the obvious -- connecting an external keyboard and mouse?  If you are not near a store where you can buy these, you can order them online as a set.  Almost anything would do and Windows 7 and 8 install basic drivers for most keyboards and mice without problems when the system comes online.
If you have not waited for several days for things to REALLY dry out before attempting to get back onto the system, then you may get away with this yet - if you WAIT for a few days.  Chances are not great, but ... ?
If you can get the system to a repair shop, it is not terribly expensive to have the keyboard / touchpad replaced -- assuming that is all that is wrong with the system -- and the repair is not a lengthy process.  This might be something you can do yourself if you are skilled, disparate, in a tiny spot on the planet somewhere (without a repair shop), or like these things...
We can check for part numbers and all of that if you are interested.  You can search for for yourself, too.
    Start at
    Support and Drivers
Enter your information -- Look along the colum and Click on Manuals.  You are looking for the Maintenance Manual.
If you do not find it, provide your Exact Product number and I will look for you.
    Locate the Notebook Product Number
I am pretty sure you are going to have to have some sort of keyboard control over that system to do more than just use the hard drive to do a hard recovery of the data.  You are not at that point until you determine that you cannot access the data through the computer itseslf...
You can always send the system to HP and have it repaired.  It is not free unless you have the warranty for it - but it is not horrible to do;  HP makes the process pretty easy.  It might be worth checking if you do not have a local option available!

    Good Luck!

  • Ultraslim wireless keyboard and mouse not working

Hi ,  I purchased the Lenovo Ultraslim Wireless Keyboard & Mouse (pn: 57Y4700) about 4 months ago for use with my T60 laptop (which i use with a docking station and large lenovo monitor at work).
Everything was woking fine until last Monday when I can into work after the weekend and neither the mouse or keyboard worked. I replaced the batteries in both, rebooted the machine several time, switch the USB ports for the nano receiver, but nothing seems to have worked.
I looked online for troubleshooting options, but did not find anything.
The mouse and keyboard don't seem to have a "sych" button - if I recall correctly everything worked right out of the box.
My theory is that the nano reciever was damaged (not sure how) -- but don't know how to proceed:
    can the nano reciever be replaced;
    any other options to troubleshoot;
any chance that this could be a software problem
    Thanks
