Wired mouses freeze continually

I have just received 15 new iMacs for a computer lab in our school.
The wired mouses continually freeze and I have to change the port they are in.
The usb plugs seem to be very sloppy in the ports.
Has anyone else had this problem and how did you solve it?

Hi Donald.
I am using the Apple wired keyboard and the Magic Mouse that came with the iMac.
When I loose control of the cursor (it is not really a computrr freeze as I mistakenly described), I can log in with my laptop and, using screen sharing, control the cursor to restart the iMac. Yet I lost control of the keyboard connected to the iMac and the Magic Mouse pared with the iMac.
This is a weird one so I am trying to work this a little at a time. Since this has only happened while I was listening to some audio thing like I described, I am going to start there for lack of a better place. I have disconnected the Harmon Kardon USB Soundsticks speakers I have had for 11 years. I'm going to work it a while without them to see if the problem comes back. Seems like a good a place as any to start.

  • Wired USB mouse freezing intermittently, becoming more frequent

I have an old Mac running Snow Leopard.  I have been having an intermittent problem with the USB wired mouse freezing.  However, the frequency of occurance is increasing to the point where it has moved beyond occasional annoyance to multiple times a day problem.  The keyboard still works but it requires a Crash reboot into safe mode to get the mouse working again.  Changing to a different brand mouse doesn't help.  Repairing disk permissions doesn't help.  Turning off the energy savers doesn't help.  Doesn't seem to matter whether bootcamp is running or not.  Doesn't seem to matter whether VMWare is running or not.  Occurs with more frequency when camera is hooked up to the USB, but only increases the occurance rate.  It still freezes when the camera isn't hooked up.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Logitech MX620 mouse freezes my iMac

This is a problem that has been more or less constant for months. Our otherwise no-problem Intel iMac has had intermittent freezes requiring hard restarts without apparent provocation. These usually present as a blank blue, white or black screen and have seemed to be associated with use of our Logitech MX620 wireless mouse. I have run Disk Warrior, applejack and Cocktail numerous times and turned up nothing. We updated to Lion last week without problems but the freezes continued almost daily. I updated the Logitech Control Center software to the Lion-compatible version but that didn't help.
So I disconnected the Logitech and reconnected the wired Apple mouse that came with the iMac. No freezes since I made the change.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

I had a similar problem using Logitech wireless mice (VX Revolution and Performance MX) with a MacBook Pro. The wireless mouse would freeze randomly a few times per day, requiring either a restart or moving the mouse's USB receiver to a different USB port on the MacBook Pro. I fixed it by uninstalling Logitech Control Center (LCC) and installing USB Overdrive instead.

  • Keyboard and mouse freeze randomly

My keyboard and mouse freeze up for 2-4 seconds at seemingly random intervals.  I could go for a couple hours without it happening, or like now, it has happened twice while writing this.  If I'm typing something when it freezes, nothing I type while it's frozen ends up showing up, but if I had hit a key right when it froze, it will repeat itself until I press something else after it unfreezes.  They keyboard and mouse both freeze at the same time, it's not one or the other.  It has nothing to do with standby like the topic below...it can happen right after I boot up or anytime thereafter.
My hardware is an eMachines M6805 laptop (upgraded to 2GB of RAM) and just a basic Dell USB mouse and keyboard.
I tried searching the forums, but the search box on here searches the entire web for some reason even if I tell it to search TechNet, so I apologize if this has already been answered.

I just had my Desktop freeze whilst I was using Media Player minimised to the taskbar.
I came back to my PC and couldn't use the keyboard or mouse. I plugged in a wired USB mouse and this did not work either. I then used the mouse and keyboard buttons on my MCE remote and still nothing happened, actually something happened as my hard drive
became very busy, but there was nothing happening on screen. I had to reboot to get back to normal operation.
I use a Logitech Bluetooth MX500 keyboard and mouse and have been having problems since I had Windows 7, but thought it was the keyboard and mouse at fault. This is the first time that I have encountered this problem, but I have had problems with the keys
sticking, very annoying when you're in Visual Studio and it goes and deletes a load of code for you because the backspace key was the one that stuck. The cursor also randomly jumps lines occasionally and inserts text where I don't want it. This wouldn't be
such an issue if I was a touch typist and could look at the screen whilst typing, but I am not and only realise the errors when I have finished typing.
Anyway, Mine is a custom built PC(all drivers and windows fully up to date) which ran XP with zero problems:
Gigabyte mboard and graphics card (Nvidia) with I5 processor and 4GB ram.
If this was a USB hub Powersave issue, then I would still expect the hub to wake up when a new device was pugged in, so I'm going to count that fix out.
I'm not sure that the freezing was a mouse/keyboard fault, I suspect that this is more a video driver fault as the computer did become very busy doing something when I used the MCE remote, it's just the screen didn't update to show what it was doing.
I should have looked at the taskbar clock to see if the time had updated, I'll do that next time if it happens again.
I've disabled the Power Save options for the hub that controls the mouse and keyboard, perhaps this will stop the keys sticking and jumping around when I'm typing in Visual Studio.

  • Wired mouse pointer disappears?

The pointer on my wired mouse regularly disappears from the screen, making it rather difficult to continue to use Word
Any suggestions as to the cause?

Does the status of the mouse change if used on a different surface?
At times a mouse won't work correctly on
    super smooth or woodgrain surfaces...
If you have a second computer, or a different mouse, using these
to test your mouse issue could help resolve or troubleshoot it.
And double-check the USB port in the computer. Do you have a
powered USB hub? A mouse can work through one, but if it fails
try connecting direct. And if plugged into a keyboard USB port
use one in the computer instead. Maybe you need a new mouse.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Keyboard and mouse freeze imac

Mouse and keyboard freeze multiple times a day.
Forcing a restart is the only way to access computer when they do.
They will work for a while after restart and do it again.
Batteries replaced in keyboard and mouse.
Mouse even switched with wired mouse, both wireless mouse and wired freeze when keyboard does.

Check your batteries in the wireless hardware.
For the wired hardware see KB Article & do the necessary:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379

  • New wired mouse

My drive is partitioned with XP SP3. I have been using a wireless keyboard and mouse for gaming and it is very possible (not probable or certain!!) that my mouse is contributing/causing game freezes and subsequent BSOD. If I was to borrow a wired mouse should I go for the Apple Mighty or consider a microsoft mouse (better compatability with XP?). I would add that I am a "low end" gamer so I do not need an all singing dancing mouse!
    Many thanks

I borrowed a mighty mouse and my freezing problem has gone away (at least for the present anyway!)

  • Mouse freezes in Tiger

Ever since I upgraded to Tiger, my mouse has been freezing. I did a clean reinstall and it didn't help. The only peripherals connect is an Epson printer and an isight camera. It's not a restart type of freeze but I do have to unplug the mouse to continue. Any suggestions?

    Try this:
Hit the option key five times. I am embarressed to say that I had to pay the 49.99 fee to apple to help the tech I was talking to figure this one out. Many months ago I was playing around in Universal Access in the system preference's.
Apparently I had set the mouse to do what it was doing... appearing to freeze, no response, turning into a text curser.... etc... (nice setting....ha...lol). After doing 3 clean installs of tiger, I noticed that one of the installs to an external firewire drive was not exhibiting this behavior. As I was explaining this to the tech, he asked if I had done a clean, archival or save user preference. The light went on, and I climbed under neath my desk so that my family would not see how the redness in my face from anger over the 49.99 fee changed to a different shade of red from embarresment. What I don't understand, is why it started happening all of a sudden. It seems some update/install triggered it........ BTW the 5 hits to the option key... turns the wonderful feature off..... Hope this helps .....

  • Mouse freezes in login window (reproducible)

    Hi,
There are numerous "mouse freezes" topics but I didn't see this exact one. I'm using a ms usb/wireless mouse. It worked fine pre-leopard/tiger. If I continuously move my mouse after I select the "Login Window ..." (from user name of menu bar), the mouse freezes (i.e., the pointer will not move) when the login window appears.
I have to shutdown and restart the mac in order to free up the mouse.
I have a couple of questions and remarks:
    1. Is there another way to unfreeze the mouse?
    2. I've done a restart (command-control-power) but the mouse is still frozen.
    3. I've tried resetting the PRAM and the SMC but problem persists.
    tia.
    rollin'

I have the exact same issue. Sometimes logging out (shiftoption+commandQ) works for me... but yeah, it's really annoying. And my mouse is a USB Apple Mighty Mouse.

  • How to recover from mouse freeze?

Occasionally, the bluetooth mouse and keyboard suddenly become unresponsive. There is no obvious pattern, but it's sufficiently infrequent to probably not be worth spending a lot of time tracking it down. It doesn't seem to be battery-related, however.
However, I would like to know if there is a way to get operational again without having to do a forced shutdown - this loses any unsaved changes, and interrupts workflow, etc.
    Thanks.

just in case Apple is paying attention to the wireless mouse problem - I talked to 3 different Mac "geniuses" (I'm not using the word pejoratively - that's what they call themselves) and got 3 different answers. They finally replaced my wireless mouse, but it just froze up & I had to hard reboot. For me, the pointer still moves but I can't click on anything. The wireless keyboard continues to work - it's just the mouse. I guess I'll go buy a regular old wired mouse.

  • What is the proper way to disconnect a magic mouse and reconnect a wired mouse with new Mac Pro?

I can disconnect the magic mouse pairing, but when I then connect the wired mouse, it malfunctions. I can open folders, etc., but then I can't close them by clicking on the close button.

Thanks for your response. Actually, this is the first thing I did. But I just tried it again, and still the mouse malfunctions.
I can open a folder, but when I press the close button in the corner, a toolbar customization menu comes up, but the window does not close.
I have already chatted online with an apple tech several times and taken my computer in to an apple store tech -  but no resolution to the problem. The online tech could see the problem with screen sharing, but couldn't fix it, and the tech at the apple store could not replicate the problem. In pursuit of an answer, I have also purchased a new wireless mouse (which works), a new wired mouse, and a new keyboard.
I have a late 2013 Mac Pro running 10.9.5, connected by HDMI to a 27" LG IPS display (27EA83R). I am now going to purchase a new HDMI cable and see if that helps. If it doesn't, the only thing left that hasn't been replaced or tested by a tech is the display. I have been assured by both an LG tech and an apple tech that the display is almost certainly not the problem -  but at this point I am not sure I have the greatest confidence in these guys.

  • PLEASE REVIEW THIS LOG REPORT 4 COMP/KEYBOARD/MOUSE FREEZE..FANS CYCLE FAST

    MY COMP STATS ARE BELOW..
as of late my g5 on random occasion will freeze up, the keyboard and mouse freeze, the caps lock button will not light up, plugging in new mouses wont work, the fans speed up like **** coming to earth..none of the keyboard shortcuts work. my only option is to keep dpoing a hard shutdown by holding the power button. i dont have any new recently installed software..
    - the light near the power button that is suppose to blink a color code to advise of certain issues is not blinking at all, nor has it changed color.
    - the freezes happen at random..sometimes not for days or a week and today it happened twice in 2 hours..
    - and my apple warranty is up..
    - i have recently started using a hp photosmart C4480 printer/scanner which i did not install any software..it worked plug and play.
im not overly computer tech savy..i posted the log from after a freeze down below..
IF ANYONE IS GOOD WITH READING THE LOGS MAYBE YOU CAN TELL ME OR DECIPHER WHAT MAY BE CAUSING THE FREEZES??
i see some messages that look like its a bad thing or something is outdated but i dont know what exactly its referring too..maybe some experianced user can point something out?
    - maybe a software upgrade or removal is needed?
if i did not post enough info for u to access my issue let me know what else you need to know please...system specs..software..whatever..
i cant afford to upgrade to 10.4 and the system is showing no hardware issues when i run the hardware scanning disc..
i cannot seem to find my utility disc to run those scans..any place i can download anything to do other scans,,

  • Mouse Freezes in After Effects

So sometimes when I'm editing in After Effects, everything will be fine for a little while. Then, randomly, my mouse will stop moving. I've no idea why. I don't think it's my computer because everything else is fine.
I know it's not my computer that freezes because when I hit the windows key on my keyboard (I have a Windows 8 Tosihba laptop) the grid pops up and the animation of the email app and the other apps move fine. Yet my mouse just doesn't move.
Also, I'm able to use the volume keys, brightness keys and everything else....just my mouse won't move!
There is a a kye on my keyboard that allows me to enable/disable my mouse pad but I've tried hitting it a few times and it still doesn't work when my mouse freezes.
Sometimes my mouse will start working again on it's own but most of the time I just have to restart my computer.
The reason I believe it's After Effects is because it only ever happens in that software. It never happens in anything else. It doesn't even happen in Photoshop or Flash.
I also have a trail of Premiere and today it happened again in that software. Is it something in the files that's messing with my mouse?
I tried reinstalling the softwares but that didn't seem to change anything.
I chatted with someone from Adobe a while ago about it and they are actually the ones who suggested maybe it's the software. When I was chatting with them, I actually just started the chat about a different issues and just asked about my mouse in passing and I didn't have time to really discuss it and I've been meaning to revisit the issue but I've been busy haha.
I think I may have to go chat again with an agent but I thought I'd just write the issue here in case someone had an answer and I could skip chatting, espcially if it's something I could just fix.
Thanks for your help in advance!
And if you need to know (because it always seems to be the first question asked on software forums like this! haha) here are my tech specs.
Computer Model --- Toshiba Satellite L875D-S7332
    Processor ----------- AMD A6 - 4400M APU with Radeon(tm)
                                       HD Graphics 2.70 GHz
    RAM ----------------- 6.00 GB (5,46 GB usable)
    System Type ------ 64 - bit Operating System, x64 - based processer

    Thanks for replying Rick!
I'm refering to my mouse pad on my laptop. However I also have a wacom pen tablet that I use as well and it acts as a mouse. Usually that one works over the built in mouse pad of my laptop, but most times neither work.  And the tablet is just plugged in with a usb cable.
I try not to run too many softwares at once but if I do, it's usually After Effects and...Google Chrome. Maybe Photoshop - in case I need to make up some images to import into After Effects, but most of the time it's After Effects and Google Chrome only.
I had After Effects on my old computer (It was a dell inspiron 1500 I believe...I don't remember but After Effects was barely able to even run on it!) I had my Toshiba (I mentioned the specs in the first post) for about a year and only reinstalled After Effects about half way through the year of 2013. I noticed it happened a copule of times but didn't think much of it. There was a time perdio where  I didn't need After Effects for a while (like a couple of monthes) but sometime...in Dec. I think, I used After Effects and I noticed it started to happen again.
It's really paculiar because it only happens in After Effects, and I only started using Premiere this week, and I noticed it happend there too. That's why I decided to post in the forum. It's really werid!

    Hello USME,
'Tis a common problem on old Macs.
Do as Allan says: open the door and blow out all the dust bunnies. Canned air from Wal-Mart or Radio Shack can be handy (though sort of expensive) especially for blowing through the back of the power supply. A cool Mac is a happy Mac.
Be sure your Mac can breathe. The air intake is on the bottom of the case, so be sure a deep pile rug or too many papers on your desk are not blocking the air supply.
Feel the power supply and the processor with your hand. They should be warm but not hot; if you have to move your hand away, that's too hot!
Check the fan on the power supply, and on the processor if it has one. Take a flashlight and peer in the back of the (Mac) case through  the grille; make sure the fan is turning. If it's not, the power supply won't work for long.
Fans are not considered serviceable, though they will succumb to mechanics of determination. A CPU fan is easy and straightforward.
A fan replacement will not cure an already damaged power supply; the PS may already be done for. Used power supplies for a DA are hard to come by, and not especially cheap when found (c.$50). An entire  working DA or Quicksilver may often be found for under $100 on eBay, and swapping in your HD is easy and simple... this might be cheaper and more expeditious than repairing an expired DA. Replacing a power supply is fairly easy, but it's a nuisance and requires a 2mm Allen head wrench in addition to the usual #2 Phillips head screwdriver.
In my experience, power supplies and CPUs are about equally likely to fail. There are a few other possibilities, but they are not nearly so common.
    Good luck!... Jon

  • TS3048 My keyboard will connect wirelessly but my mouse will not. I've put new batteries in the mouse and the green light is blinking but it just won't connect!!! I don't have a 'wired' mouse so I can't get into preferences etc!!! Pls help

My keyboard will connect wirelessly but my mouse will not. I have tried many times, put new batteries in etc. The Bluetooth appears to be on (as the wireless keyboard is working). I don't have a 'wired' mouse so I can't get into preferences etc. Is the mouse dead perhaps? The green light is flickering so it should be ok???
    Thank you for your help
    Sully (frustrated Irishman)

From what you say I would suggest the batteries are not connecting properly.
First, thoroughly clean all contacts, both inside the mouse and the contact points of the batteries.  Use an alcohol based cleaner (whisky will do, hic!)  dampen (not wet) cotton buds for cleaning.
Then check to see if they fit firmly.   If you can shake your mouse and hear things are loose, that will be the batteries.   Check the make.   Apple and Duracell, in that order, are the best batteries.   Where slight undersizing has been reported they are with other than the foregoing.
You can resolve the size problem with appropriate packing but that will always be a makeshift solution.  After, reassemble, turn on the mouse and with luck, away you go.
Hopefully this will solve your problem but in any case let us know how you get on.
