Wired USB mouse freezing intermittently, becoming more frequent

I have an old Mac running Snow Leopard.  I have been having an intermittent problem with the USB wired mouse freezing.  However, the frequency of occurance is increasing to the point where it has moved beyond occasional annoyance to multiple times a day problem.  The keyboard still works but it requires a Crash reboot into safe mode to get the mouse working again.  Changing to a different brand mouse doesn't help.  Repairing disk permissions doesn't help.  Turning off the energy savers doesn't help.  Doesn't seem to matter whether bootcamp is running or not.  Doesn't seem to matter whether VMWare is running or not.  Occurs with more frequency when camera is hooked up to the USB, but only increases the occurance rate.  It still freezes when the camera isn't hooked up.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • USB mouse freezes after wake from sleep.

Since the 10.8.2 update my Logitech USB mouse freezes after waking up the computer from sleep or when it goes into energy save from non use. This also happens to my brand new MBPR. I tries repair permissions and reset the smc. Any suggestions?

I get a frozen mouse (Microsoft Intellimouse Optical) on my 2012 Mac Mini running Mavericks (it did it with Mountain Lion also) when waking from sleep about 75% of the time which works again if I unplug/replug it (light is on and mouse buttons work when it's frozen, but the pointer won't move).  It does this whether I use a built-in USB3 port, a USB2 hub and now also with my new USB3 hub.
However, my 2008 Macbook Pro also has an Intellimouse connected to it when docked and it NEVER freezes when waking from sleep whether using the built-in USB2 port or a Gmyle USB3 card port.  Either way, the mouse wakes fine and it's the SAME MODEL MOUSE and SAME OSX verison.  I have no idea why the inconsistency.  It ***** because "Wake on Network Activity" FINALLY works right here in Mavericks with XBMC on my Mac Mini so there's a perfect opportunity to save some electricity.  I got excited when it woke up two times in a row with 10.9.1 and set up my sleep controls only to find it wouldn't go to sleep with the Energy Savings menu because I have an external USB3.0 3TB media drive connected (at all times).  I finally found out (through more patient testing) that once the drive spun down (possibly on its own power saving timer as I'm not sure the "Shut down hard drives when possible" setting works in Mavericks; it was messed up in Mountain Lion in 10.8.4 and even though 10.8.5 fixed it, I'm not sure Mavericks is using the same code.  It doesn't seem to shut down any faster with or without the setting on and shuts off several minutes after the computer attempts to go to sleep (on a 1 minute test setting; I think WD defaults to 10 minutes in firmware).
Anyway, once that was resolved and I saw it would go to sleep eventually once the drive spun down (it will sleep instantly if I select SLEEP from the Apple menu which I find odd if it's such a big deal that it's connected....), I thought OH BOY!  I'm all set.  Then I woke it from that sleep and found my mouse was frozen again..... :-(  What a PITA to unplug/plug the mouse every time it wakes from sleep.  It's not worth it.  I'll just have to pay the extra few bucks in electricity each month I could have saved to avoid such a freaking nightmare hassle.  Why on God's Green Earth, Apple CANNOT or WILL NOT fix their darn energy savings features is just beyond me.  Instead of spending all their time making horrible horrible ugly icon/GUI updates to iOS and making it slower and slower and slower, why don't they actually fix some darn bugs in OSX for once in their lives.... I'm starting to think I should give Windows another chance I'm so annoyed right now.  But then I think about having to run a malware program and have that program update and Windows software/security updates 3x a day and I think I can just deal with the Mini not sleeping.....
I'd like to know why Apple couldn't figure out those of us with multiple monitors would want a dock on BOTH monitors all the time either (first side-mount docks wouldn't migrate and now in 10.9.1, bottom-mounted docks won't migrate here either, leaving a dock on one monitor all the time and if that's the monitor that is showing full-screen video, you lost your dock completely while the video is playing.  They finally figured out after a full decade that having a menu bar on both screens would be a good idea, but it just didn't occur to them that the same is true of the dock.  How much are they paying these guys?  Too much apparently (or is it too little to attract talented thinkers? Nah, it couldn't be since we give them feedback and they just ignore it).

  • MPro, 10.7.5 mouse/keyboard intermittently become unresponsive

I am running OS 10.7.5 on a 2009 Mac Pro and recently the mouse started to intermittently become unresponsive. I usually can fix this by conecting the mouse to a different usb port but last time it happened this didn't work and I also lost the keyboard. I switched both mouse and keyboard and problem persisted, even when moving to different usb ports.  After several hard reboots the mouse and keyboard came back and has been working since. I know the second mouse and keyboard are good and I am able to ptint from all the usb ports on the Mac Pro so I son't think it's a hardware problem. Could this be some kind of driver conflict? There are two canon usb printer drivers installed and two network printers )Lexmark and Brother). I have been running software update regularly. No other problems and I do regular disk maintenance (Diskwarrior). There are two SSDs and two hard drives installed, 32 GB ram. No problems with any hardware that I know of. Could a memory error? Thanks in advance for any ideas as to cause or insights into tracking it down appreciated.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • My wireless usb mouse freezes or gets stuck on right click/drag

My wireless usb mouse has been getting stuck on right click and/or drag, or the right click just freezes and becomes unusable. Sometimes, my mouse jumps erratically and opens anything that the arrow crosses. I can't use my trackpad because it's broken, but the trackpad itself isn't causing any problems. My system preferences for mouse and trackpad are all fine. My bluetooth is turned off in accordance with the recommendations of people having similar problems. My anti-virus programs don't detect a macro virus or any other problems. Only restarting in safe mode temporarily solves the problem. Does anybody know how to fix this?
Some people have suggested this may be caused by a swollen battery. However, my laptop is a somewhat more recent model and I don't have a portable/removable battery, so I can't solve the problem by taking it out and back in as some people have. Other suggestions?
    Thanks!

Update: I've also tried repairing permissions and that doesn't help.
I've experimented with other mouses just to see if there'd be a difference, but the problem is definitely with the computer. All plug-in or wireless mouses have the same results. Right click still won't work.

  • 10.6.7 usb mouse freezes

    Greetings
I have a USB mouse ive been using since optical mice were invented.
I upgraded to 10.6.7 and the mouse works fine, then it stops. i pick it up, and it works again, it's like it goes to sleep. no light no power. then it works.
I have multiple monitors, and the usb mouse is plugged into the back of one of the monitors. I really see it stop when i switch monitors or try to scroll on a web page. a sudden click then it freezes and starts again. As long as Im in one window, it seems fine, but if i go to another application or click somewhere else it jumps. Which makes me think it's not hardware and it had something to do with a recent update.

    greetings
I have cured my illness but I had to amputate the leg.
I have 4 monitors each has their own USB. My newest monitor has a high Speed USB bus. i disconnected the older models and kept the High speed usb bus with just keyboard and mouse. The mouse is zippy and fast again.
I realized something was failing when i plugged the mouse into an older display, when the jitter started the mouse totally failed and would not come back. little blue tooth mouse came in handy.
    I'll run some more test.

  • USB mouse fails intermittently

My USB mouse (on 17"G4 PowerBook 1.67) fails intermittently. It will just freeze. If I unplug the mouse and replug, it will start working again. Both ports behave the same way, and I've tried two different mice. Same result.
I've done the Power Module Reset for this machine (Unplug power; remove battery; press/hold "start"). As promised, the clock needed resetting, but it didn't fix the mouse/USB problem.
Problem occurs unpredictably; sometimes will go a day or two between failures; other times only a few minutes.
    Any clues?

I posted this in the wrong forum (15" aluminum) but I saw your post, it may be the same problem. I have a 15" PB 1ghz/2gb ram, 10.4.9. USB mice do not work, or only VERY erratically. I have tested several mice, and some work not at all, just blink a couple times, and some work when I jiggle the wire just right, but only briefly.
This made me think it was a contact problem, but other devices work fine with the USB ports; keyboard, wireless dongle, etc. I also tested the mice on other Macs and they work fine.

  • Endless loop on iMac after OS update, wont recognise wired USB mouse

I just installed an update on my 2010 iMac, running 10.7.5 and it completed successfully, but now I am stuck in an endless loop on startup. The dialog that shows up over the startup screen (user icons showing up correctly behind it) is from the Bluetooth Setup Assistant, and is titled "Bluetooth Mouse or Trackpad Setup". Its telling me there's no wireless mouse or trackpad connected, which is absolutely true. I prefer wired mice and don't use a trackpad with my iMac. There is a Logitech USB mouse attached that I've been using for a long time, it worked fine immediately before the update. It was plugged into my Apple wired keyboard, but I've also rebooted with it plugged into the Mac directly thru a USB port on the back. Same thing both ways.
Its now looping endlessly, saying "Attempting to connect with mouse #1 (hex code follows in parentheses)", then it says "No wireless mice or trackpads have been found. Make sure your wireless mouse is discoverable", then it goes back to the attempting to connect, and so on...
Anybody got a way out of this??

Wow. Would never have believed that was possible (that's why I didnt consider it...). It appears that indeed the software update itself fried the mouse. The same mouse whose last click was to click the "Restart" button on the software update dialog. A different iMac won't recognise it either, and the mouse from that Mac breaks the endless loop from the Bluetooth Setup Assistant. Looks like I need to find a new mouse, I wonder if I can still find one with a wire...
Any thoughts on whether this was pure blind coincidental failure, or is there some way a restart itself could damage a mouse somehow??? Hard to imagine the software did it per se, so perhaps it was one final reboot that broke the camel's mouse's back?
    Thanks, Linc.

  • USB mouse freezes when external HD is connected

Not sure who to contact on this one.  I purchased some music software from East/West and it came on a Western Digital hard drive.  Every time I connect the hard drive, my mouse freezes and I can't open the drive.  Any ideas???  Sounds like a compatibility issue but the HD is supposed to be for Mac.

    - Have you tried another cable for HD?
    - If you open Finder. unplug the mouse and then plug the HD in does the HD appear in Finder (it has to be formatted for a Mac to appear)
    - Have you tried on anther computer? Either Mac or PC.
    - Do other devices like USB thrumb drive work on the Mini?

  • Why does my keyboard and mouse freeze intermittently after updating to 10.8.2?

After updating to 10.8.2 on my early 2011 Macbook Pro, whenever I pause for more than a few seconds using either the keyboard or the mouse, the pointer freezes. It takes a few seconds of dragging my finger across the keypad or hitting a number of keys before it begins to respond again.
It doesn't appear that any background process is frozen or that the whole system is frozen because video still plays through without stuttering, and downloads continue updating the progress bar as the freeze occurs.
The same thing has happened since my wife updated her Macbook Air. Very frustrating.
Suggestions on a workaround or solution?
    Thanks.

Have subsequently tried doing a re-install with the combo updater, repaired permissions, reset SMC and PRAM. No luck. When booting into safe mode, works fine but cursor is 'jittery' and the screen is erratic (like an old tv with rabbit ears antenna.)
Any thoughts or help would be significantly appreciated.

  • USB Mouse freezes as GNOME starts

    Hello,
I have just bought a new mouse to replace my old Wireless USB Logitech mouse which was perfectly supported by my system but I have a problem with my new one, a Roccat Kova (USB and driverless).
With GDM, my mouse works. Then I type my password and log in. GNOME is starting and my mouse is still working. But at the time the menu and task bars appear (GNOME is loaded), the cursor isn't movable anymore and others buttons don't work as well.
My mouse, which is driverless, should for example change LED colors when I press simultaneously two of its buttons. It doesn't in this situation. It is a complete freeze.
However, my USB keyboard still works and I can open up a console. Then I use a small script I've found on a blog (initially designed to make the MP3 player Sansa Fuze work with Linux) :
    sudo rmmod ehci-hcd
    sleep 1s
    sudo modprobe ehci-hcd
Then every connected via USB is stopped and 10 seconds later, everything works, even my mouse.
    That's it!
Here is an Xorg log : http://pastebin.com/3byrHv79
and the mouse section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier     "Mouse0"
        Driver         "mouse"
        Option         "Protocol" "usb"
        Option         "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
        Option         "ZAxisMapping" "4 5 6 7"
    EndSection

Another detail : Once the script has rebooted USB support, you have to scroll with the wheel of the mouse to reactivate it.

  • USB keyboard freezes intermittently

Just got a new TS200v with Windows 2008 Foundation R2. Only has USB ports, therefore using USB peripherals. For some reason once in a while (quite often, actually) the keyboard (Microsoft Comfort 2000) wouldn't respond when trying to log on. So I have to reinsert the plug to "wake" it up. Mouse (old Logitech) always works, though.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

Having searched these forums and others for a week or so I am now posting a question.
After "UpGrading" to Leopard I am now experiencing intermittent mouse lock-ups.
I prefer using an outboard mouse over the trackpad most of the time. This issue occurs often enough to be annoying but seems to correct itself. Unplugging and replugging the mouse also works. This does not occur when booted into boot camp.
I am pretty sure it is a USB issue since I have the same issue with multiple mice.
FYI Universal Access Mousekeys is Off
Firmware updates that would apply have been applied
This was never an Issue with Tiger
    Welcome to the Apple boards:
Leopard enforces the USB power limits so if your mouse draws too much current from the USB port you will have problems. Some have used powered hubs to solve this issue.
As an aside, you do not boot into BootCamp. BootCamp is merely a tool to install Winders. You boot into Winders. Once you use BootCamp to partition your drive, it's no longer needed or used.
Winders probably does not enforce the USB current limits, so the mouse may work, but you should be aware that you may still be overloading the USB driver.

  • Kernel shutdown becoming more frequent (MBP, Yosemite)

Hi, I am currently running a Mid-2012 MBP with version 10.10.2 (14C109) of Yosemite.
Since mid-2014 the laptop has been 'shutting down due to a problem', it was a regular occurrence at first but became less frequent.
I searched through the discussions and several blogs finding different methods to try combat this issue.
    I have tried
    -Reseting NVRAM/PRAM
    -Uninstalling suspected apps
    -Cleaning caches
    -Verifying disks etc.
I thought the basis of the fault was mdworker (spotlight) from the CPU readings in the Activity Monitor but then Google Chrome helper and other apps started using up higher CPU (I believe google chrome helper is a different problem anyway)
Eventually I gave up trying to fix it because I had planned on replacing the HDD with a new Crucial M550 SSD. I swapped these out at Christmas and placed the HDD in place of the optical drive. Everything booted fine and the mac was back to normal and a lot faster. Three weeks in a kernel panic occurred again and I have been trying to get to the root of it since. Then early last week the whole system crashed and I had to start fresh. I reinstalled the OS with a version on the SSD and the HDD as backup. I re-installed the apps I need (After Effects & Premiere Pro) and got back to work. This morning it has crashed consistently everytime I start using Premiere Pro, even with no other apps open. I dont know if I need Trim with the SSD, if its spotlight thats causing it, maybe an unnecessary app.I really need help with this because I have to meet deadlines. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
I have logged all reports to apple but here is the latest one from today.

  • Random internet loss is becoming more frequent but...

Hi all, had infinity for about a year now, had the odd loss of connection where everything in the house losses connection, iphones iPads nexus laptops pc's wired and wireless. But all three blue lights are on an the hub and devices are showing as connected via wireless.
Only way to get it back is kill the power and wait 15 mins.
Now its 2-3 times as day, out if the blue everything losses internet.
    Any thoughts?

No. If you had not changed anything on the Homehub from when it was first installed everything should have reconnected without any intervention by you. - the equipment is the same now as the day it was installed.
The white Openreach modem should not have needed to be restarted, why did you do that? - as i said the hub was reset via the reset button (20 seconds +), it caused everything in the house to disconnect for over 30 mins, most would not reconnect at all, you say i should not need to do that but then i should not have needed to forget the network and re-enter my network key either?
Did you hold the pin in for 20 seconds? - yes
Is everything working now? - at the moment yes, but the wireless pc and ipad have lost internet connection but not wireless connection once in the last hour.

That is a problem with the [[Flash]] plugin.

You can try to disable all other plugins except Flash and also disable all extensions to test if that helps.
