Wired vs wireless performance problem

I have a Linksys WRT54g router.  When we use a PC laptop wireless, the response time for download is noticeably less thatn when we connect it to the router.   The input from Cox is 27 mbps and the PC tells us it is receiving 100 mbps wired, 54 mbps wireless, both faster than the input, so there shouldn't be an issue, but downloading from youtube as a test shows the wireless download buffering, whereas the wired download is perfect.   The laptop is placed in the same place in both cases, less than 10 feet from the router.   I had a chat session with Linksys, who suggested there was interference, and we should change the wireless channel.   We did, to both channels 1 and 11 (it had been the default 6).  That made no difference.
We do have a 2.4 ghz remote phone in the room, but that shouldn't be a factor if it isn't being used.   We also have an iMac wired, but even turning it off doesn't  impact the test.   There is a large window in the room.  Cox proides statistics on use and that would indicate that no one else is using the wireless (it is secured).  And this is not a new problem, it has always been there through two physical routers - it has just been made more critical since we have bought an internet ready TV and would like to take advantage of it, but the wireless response is terrible.
So is there something else I am missing here?   Would getting a newer N router fix the problem?   Presumably there is some interference around that covers the whole 2.4 GHZ band.
Help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

good day to you. your testing looks very good.(you have a very good service)  the ping test is "very good" also if you had no packet loss that would mean that all the wiring to your server is good and has no problem. i have to agree with you at this point it has to be the the wireless.
first thing i can think of is how strong is your signal? (how many bars do you have) good may get you utube with little or no buffering, strong or better is needed for hdtv, and 3D pretty much has to peg the signal ranges. start with the signal because if it is not where it should be the speed test and dowloads will always have buffering and the speed test should be intermitent and slow on the wireless device. also that should help you identify anything that is interfearing with the wireless.
if your bars are strong. then you need to look at what is reciving the signal. if you have had this problem for years and its the same laptop or device that you are hooking up that would tell me that its wireless cards are outdated. remember if your router is a "G" and what your hooking up is a wirless "A or B" device it will slow your wireless back down to the "A or B" speeds even if the signal is strong
try to hook up one device with a wireless "G or N" card to the "G" router and test with only that wireless device hooked up (wired devices can still be hooked up) and at this point if all else fails take your wireless device out to a good public wifi hookup and do a speed and signal test there. after that maybe barrow a router from somebody you know. remember go one step at a time you should find the problem.  DO NOT GIVE UP.
you have a great service not to use wireless for the future.  i have 5 wireless computers and 1 x-box,2 wiis,2 dvds, a cell phone and i also have a guest account up to ten devices when my kids come home with there cell phones and computers, also a 1tb hard drive connected straight into my routers usb port that way all the music and movies can be shared straight from the router.  you may need to do some updateing but if i was you i would find my problem first before spending money and getting upset with a problem that may still be there.
maybe this will also help you. on my brand new routers box it says broad compatibility, works seamlessly with all a/b/g/n wi-fi devices.
the problem there is if i hook up a "a/b/g" device it will limit my routers speed to that older device. so i had to upgrage all my older stuff to "N" cards to match my routers highest speed range.

  • Problems with hp laser printing in leopard- wired and wireless

Printing problems in Leopard are slowly eating away at my last nerve!
Here's the background: I have a Macbook Pro 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB ram, running 10.5.2. Ever since I upgraded to Leopard, I've been having printing problems, both wired and wireless. I have an HP Laserjet 1160, which is a wonderfully reliable printer- I've had it since 2005 and have never had a problem.
When I installed Leopard, I began getting a popup message after starting up my computer and logging in. The message has a lighthouse icon on it and reads:
"Popup Error: Failed to listen for incoming Popup jobs. You will not be able to use Popup printing for the duration of this session. Please report this incident to a system administrator."
(for the record, I only have one computer, it's not on any system, and I have the administrator account)
Here are the two problems I have:
-First, wired printing is spotty. Half of the time, when I connect the USB cable and click print, nothing prints. Usually, if I unplug the cable and plug it into the other USB port, then printing works. This is in spite of the fact that the computer recognizes that the printer is there- I can delete then re-add the printer to my printer list and still nothing.
-Second, wireless printing does not work at all. Again, the printer is recognized when plugged in to either the time capsule or the airport express, and I can add the printer, but printing doesn't work: the job is sent to the print queue, but the queue stalls on the "connecting to printer" phase.
This problem is a huge pain, and I have no idea how to solve it. Any help is appreciated.
    Jon

Thanks for posting this problem Cathjock. I have had the same issue with a NEC Superscript 1400. Thinking it wast he printer, which is getting up there in age, I went out and purchased a new HP P1505 to no avail. I have been researching this for a few days now and think that all of this is related to a user permission in CUPS. I have de-installed, re-installed, re-booted etc as prescribed and got three pages hours after the fact via my Airport Express connected new printer. Generally, however, nothing comes out immediately as was the case in the past either on Airport Express or via USB cable. I am stumped and am starting to get worried.
I can't print invoices for my business and am considering firing up my old Windows machine if you can believe it !
Seriously, Apple has created a monstrous situation with all of htese printing issues and nothing is apparently being done, nothing that I can find in any of the discussion forums at this time.
My last option is to re-install 10.5 with an archive and install as I really cannot afford to start from scratch.
Now if you look at this forum, there are 242,847 views logged with 2,514 questions and 13,848 messages.
This should mean something for Apple as many people need help and are getting really really ******-off.
So pleeeeaaaaase Apple. respond and offer a fix for this problem that is plaguing a ton of people.

  • Windows 7 64 bit has problems with Actiontec MI424WR while wired with wireless radio off

I have discovered an issue with Windows 7 64 bit OS.  My attempted set up was to havea 802.11n Belkin Play router connected to my Actiontec MI424WR router as a wireless access point with the MI424WR wireless radio turned off.  This worked fine for my XP 32 bit PC, my Windows 7 32 bit PC, and my 2 Windows 7 64 bit laptops using wireless.  A problem arose when I tried wired connections on the Windows 7 64 bit laptops and a Windows 7 64 bit PC.
While wired, internet would drop either completely or intermittently but too frequently to be useful.  Tech support had no idea what to do or what caused it.  It was reproducible after a reset of the router and then turning off the wireless radio.
I could fix it by turning on the wireless radio again, but I had hoped to turn it off and only use wireless from the 802.11n router.
    Any ideas?
    Brian

Did you disconnect wireless on the 2 Windows 7 64 bit machines while testing wired?
What is the connection between the Actiontec and the Belkin?  LAN-to-WAN or LAN-to-LAN?
If the connection is LAN-to_LAN, the wireless connection on each machine would have obtained a DHCP address from the Actiontec.  When you connected wired, you would have gotten a new IP address based on the different MAC address of the wired NIC, resulting in the machine having 2 IP addresses.  This may not be readily apparent on the Actiontec main status page as the second connection will get a generated name of "new-host-xx" (the router can't reuse the same PC name for 2 different IP addresses).  Windows should be able to keep the two connections on the same subnet straight, but I've seen WIndows do stranger things.
If the connection is LAN-to-WAN, the Belkin must have a different subnet address than the Actiontec (e.g.. 192.168.2.x).  Now, if you connect both wired to the Actiontec (192.168.1.x) and wireless via the Belkin (192.168.2.x), Windows is going to have connections to two different subnets with two different gateway routers. Without explicit routing rules, Windows won't know which gateway to use.

  • Problem with WRT160NV2, both wired and wireless...

I bought a WRT160NV2 Refurbed from CompUSA about 2 weeks ago, and since then I've been having some problems.
It's not every site, but there are a few sites (three or four I've noticed)  that load very, very, very slowly. It happens using wired or wireless (Main PC is wired). I've tried rebooting both the router and modem multiple times (10 or 20 times at least) and looked through the forums and noticed some people said try setting the MTU to 1300. I tried that and it didn't seem to do anything, so I tried 1350, 1400, 1450, 1490, and 1100, with no results with either. When I connect using just my modem everything works fine. I'm frustrated because I can't find a solution to this. Any help would be appreciated.

Since you have already changed the MTU size on your Router and still facing the same problem, then i think you need to Re-flash / Upgrade the firmware of your Router...
Download the firmware from the Linksys website and then upload the firmware on your Router... Once the firmware is upgraded on your Router, then you need to reset the router and re-configure all the settings on it again...

  • Wired and Wireless sometimes work (mostly not) after update.

So I have an issue with my network connection.  It sometimes works, sometimes doesn't (mostly doesn't).  This is for both wired and wireless.  This started to happen a couple of days ago after an update.  I had not updated for about a month prior.  Prior to the update I used WICD and it worked just fine with no problems.  I have no exotic hardware (ipw2200 using its firmware, dell xps gen2 notebook) and I set up everything about 6 months ago based on all the wikis.  I have a dlink dir-825 router.  Both wired and wireless connections work in windows every boot so it's not hardware.
I've included as much info as possible... sorry for the length.

    #    This setup specifies all modules in the MODULES setting above.
    #    No raid, lvm2, or encrypted root is needed.
    #    HOOKS="base"
    #    This setup will autodetect all modules for your system and should

    #    HOOKS="base udev autodetect ide scsi sata filesystems"
    #    This setup will generate a 'full' image which supports most systems.
    #    No autodetection is done.
    #    HOOKS="base udev pata scsi sata usb filesystems"
    #    This setup assembles an pata raid array with an encrypted root FS.
    #    Note: See 'mkinitcpio -H raid' for more information on raid devices.

Was able to boot this weekend and did an update which updated the kernel.  Rebooted and there was no network.  Rebooted again and no network... rebooted again and... had network!?  I tried changing wicd to use dhclient only and did the triple reboot test again and it didn't change anything... randomly working network... same with dhcpcd.
So it appears to be a dhcp timeout issue however it makes no sense because before the update a couple weeks ago it was working every time with no hiccup.  Am I not providing enough information that will aid in anyone helping me figure this out?

  • I have a Time Capsule as my router.  I can connect wirelessly to the network and internet with my MBPr, but my Mac Mini will only connect to the network wired or wirelessly. Airport on it sees the internet as green, but will not connect.

I have the Time Capsule hooked to a wireless modem.  It uses a static IP, which is put in and running.  The MBPr connects, as well as my iPhone 5, to the internet and network without problem.  I can see the Mac Mini, external drive attached to it, and the Time Capsule.  The Mac Mini connects to the network wired or wirelessly, but not to the internet.  On wireless, using AirPort the Internet shows green, but no connection when I open Safari.  The settings under network settings are identical except for LAN IP between the Mac Mini and the MBPr.  I was hoping someone might have an idea of what was going on.  Before I moved the Time Capsule was on Bridge mode from another router, now it is on DHCP and NAT for the internal network.

No, its is connected direct to the providers fiber box.

  • Sharing iTunes between wired and wireless Macs

    Hi,
I have a Mac laptop connected wirelessly to an Airport Express -- which is wired to a desktop Mac Mini. I'm trying to share music but cannot. I've done all the proper settings in the iTunes preferences and the same in System Preferences -- I think -- on both computers, but on neither computer is anything showing in the Sources window. It says that there are no users online.
Is there something in the System Preferences box that I'm missing? Should I turn the firewall off (I shouldn't need to, since I've checked the iTunes Sharing box)? Is the main problem here that you can't share music between a wired and wireless computer? (This would be a bit strange to me, but you never know.)
One other thing. I was trying out the network and I can only get access to the wired Mini's Public folder as a Guest, not as a Registered User. Is there something very badly wrong here?
    Any suggestions welcome. Thanks.

Thanks for the rapid response. All of those preferences, however, are already set properly (i.e., as you said) on both computers. When I try to go to the Network, I can access the wired desktop Mini's hard drive, but when I try to do it on the mini to get into the laptop's it can't find the afp. It just keeps searching but then says it doesn't exist. Not sure if this network-connectivity problem is relevant or not for this particular issue of iTunes sharing. Grateful for any advice.

  • Wired and Wireless Connections to OfficeJet 8620?

We have a small wired Ethernet network.  We are planning to install an HP OfficeJet 8620 multi-function printer tomorrow.  I understand that for a wired-only Ethernet network, I would just connect the OfficeJet to our router, then install the drivers on each workstation.
Unfortunately, our situation is more complicated than that.  Several people want to use wireless devices to print to the OfficeJet 8620.  We have a working wireless network in place, and the wireless devices are able to access it without problem..
All devices on the network (wired and wireless) use the same router, which has both wired Ethernet ports and wireless capability.  So, everything is on the same network, going through the same router.
From reading the 8620 documentation, it looks like you can only have a wired OR a wireless connection, but not both.  Apparently connecting a CAT-5 cable to the Ethernet port on the printer disables the wireless capability of the printer.
If that is correct, what can we do to enable both wired computers and wireless mobile devices to print to the 8620, given the network structure I have described above?
Thanks very much for any assistance you can offer.

  • Windows XP failing to acquire network address whether wired or wireless

    Hi guys,
I initially asked this question elsewhere because it was happening in OSX as well, though now that the OSX side of things has been fixed it is purely a Windows XP problem, and is a different problem to the one in Mac OSX.
The problem seems simple enough, in that Windows XP just refuses to acquire a network address when connecting to the internet whether wired or wirelessly. I spent the best part of 7 hours on this on Monday, and after trawling through countless web pages I seemed to establish that there was an error with the AFD Driver (which, as I understand, is one of three required for the DHCP Client service to run). I was on the verge of probably doing something monumentally stupid and trying to repair/replace that driver when in a moment of genius (which should have arrived significantly sooner in the day) I asked my fiancee when the last time was that she could remember the internet working properly. She said it was the day before just after she agreed to install SP3, but the installation failed. So I used System Restore and rolled the system back to before that point, et voila. Everything was fine.
Not appreciating the path taken to fix her iMac, my fiancee then tried to install SP3 again and the same problem reoccurred. Another System Restore fixed it. The problem now is that on startup Windows XP seems to revert back to the same state, and will refuse to acquire an IP address. A System Restore back to the same time will fix it. However, whilst this takes little longer than an actual startup, I was wondering whether or not anybody had any bright ideas for a permanent fix to this problem.
All ideas, solutions and pearls of wisdom welcomes with open arms.

Try using a system that is able to connect to the internet in Windows. Then go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=2FCDE6CE-B5FB-4488-8 C50-FE22559D164E and then download SP3 to the hard drive of that system. Then using the CD/DVD burning of your choice that you have for Windows burn the disc image file to CD/DVD and then insert it to the system that has the issue and upgrade it to SP3 that way.
I used to use Windows update to get service pack, but one time it did not download and install correctly on an HP system. Since then I have went to Microsoft and downloaded the Service Pack and when it said that it installed successfully I deleted the file I downloaded. I never had issues when I get them and install them that way. The only Service Pack I had issues with was Service Pack 1 for Windows 7. I downloaded it from Microsoft to the hard drive and after it said it was installed successfully I deleted the file. I used it for a while then I shut the system completely down. Then when I booted into Windows I went to put in my password and nothing happened. I tried moving the mouse nothing happened. Then I did a hard reset, booted into Mac OS X, used Boot Cap Assistant, removed the partition, downgraded to Windows XP 32-bit and now miss all the features that come with 64-bit Operating Systems. I am now able to use 2.5GB of RAM out of the 8GB that is in my system. I thought with Windows 32-bit that 4GB what the most that could be used.

  • A very strange wired and wireless network issue

    Hello,
I have never had any issue at all with my macbook (2008) until this week, I use it both for work and personal use.
Most of time, I'm used to be on customer site, so I use wired and wireless connections depending of the situation....
I have never had any issue at all with wifi neither ethernet connections during three years, until this week... and I can say this is the most strange thing I have ever seen....
Using wired or wireless connection, always the speed of network was really good, at home, many customers, etc never had any problem...
But this week I'm currently out of home, and the hotel where I'm staying I'm having very poor network rate....
Using wireless connection, the download speed is no more than 10kb.... and using ethernet I get less speed... but during the day I'm on customer site, using the ethernet connection and download speed is really good, more than 500k-800k....
I have already tried in the hotel few wifi connections (there are three) and differents wired connections (in diferent rooms) and the download speed is always the same, no more than 10kb...
During this afternoon, I could go into hotel's lab and could connect directly to the router using cable, same speed no more than 10kb....
The most strange thing is on their computers the download speed using wired connection is around 6Mb....
how is possible I'm getting no more than 10kb of download speed when the pc's at hotel using same wired connection gets 6Mb?
I have already deleted current network connections, execute onyx to clear everything, perform dhcp connection, tried manual ip etc, and always the results are the same...
I know there is no problem with the macbook, because it works pretty good at every location I've been... but until this week...
Sincerely I'm getting a little crazy here, I'll appreciate any help!!!
    thanks in advance

I've seen something like this on my T400 when it was running Vista.  Now that I use Win 7 it's been OK. I rather doubt that your issue is the same but I'm tossing it out here just on the off chance.
Im my case, I had to downgrade my Intel 5300 card to a 5100 (as suggested by a Lenovo 2nd-tier tech) to get things working.
My symptoms were a little different.  Wifi was fine until I went back to a wired network.  After that, trying to use the same wifi AP as before would end up associated, but no internet access.  DHCP wasn't working.  The GUI "find" app didn't work as expected either.  Some APs showed up, and some didn't.
If I configured for automatic connection to my home AP it would try and fail.  Just rebooting at that point would again attempt an automatic connection that would succeed.
What I have noticed now that I run Win 7 is that Access Connections is completely useless.  Often the "finder" doesn't show an AP 3 feet away.  I didn't notice that this happened after a switch from wired, but maybe.
Are you using Access Connections?  If so, you might try uninstalling it.
Sorry I can't be of real help,
    Z.

  • Yosemite no wired or wireless network

Since upgrading to Yosemite neither my MacBook Pro 15 (Retina Mid 2012) or my MacBook Pro 17 (Early 2011) will connect to the internet by Thunderbolt wired connection or wirelessly via my Airport Time Capsule.  We have many iPads and iPhones in the house all connecting through the Airport Time Capsule, no problem.  Both my iMacs have been upgraded to Yosemite and they seem to be working OK wired and wirelessly.
Does anyone have any idea how to solve this problem on no network connectivity with my MacBook Pro's.  I have wasted hours and hours on this problem and have got absolutely nowhere.  I think I may have fixed it, until I reboot and then several hours of frustration before wireless works again.  I have given up on wired, I have not managed to connect using a wired connection once since the upgrade.
Does anyone have any ideas on how this might be fixed please?

    Hi nej,
thanks for posting and welcome to the community. As you may already know when it comes to wireless issue there are many factors that can cause that different factors to look at. However in your case I would suggest you to click on "Start" and in the search field type "Services.msc". Click on services and once the services window opens, search for "WLAN AutoConfig". Doulble lick on it and check if the service is started or not? If it is not, ensure that it is started.
    Hope this helps.

  • Network drivers no internet wired or wireless

I have a T60 type 2007 and model BE6. I recently have been unable to use my wired or wireless internet on my laptop. I thought it might be a problem with my drivers then. I tried uninstalling them and rolling them back but whenever I click uninstall or rollback driver the window freezes then.
I tried updating my driver then to the latest ones which I got from the website for my wireless and network, and when I updated the drivers it would just keep on going in that window and eventually freeze, and then after I close it, the driver details showed it to be the new driver even though it froze. With the new drivers installed the local area connection would be disabled, and when I try to enable it, it would say connection failed.
When I tried to rollback the drivers it would freeze, but after I opened it up again it would show my old driver information. With the old drivers, my local area connection would be enabled, but still when I try to connect to internet, it says the specified destination is not reachable. Also when I try disabling the wireless or local area connection it doesnt do anything, and when i do repair it freezes.
Also for the drivers when i try to go into the resource tab, that window just freezes.
I do not know if my drivers are updating correctly or not, because it freezes and such. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    thanks.

    Hi mishink7,
    Welcome to the Lenovo forum
Because you are having networking problems with both wired and wireless, it seems likely that the problems are caused not by the network device drivers, but by something higher in the network "stack". Did you install or update a firewall, Access Connections, or any other software just before you started having network problems?
    Best regards,
    Frank

  • E1500 wireless router having problems streaming video and netflix

We got a new E1500 router 2 nights ago. The internet works fine, but it has big trouble streaming videos and Netflix, those types of things. I have changed my MTU setting and all the settings suggested in the "Guide Me" section. My drivers are up to date on my router and on my pc. It just started happening with this router. We had a Netgear before and we have no problems streaming at all. I have rebooted and reset the router and cable modem.
Does anyone else have some suggestions I can try?
    Thanks,
    Debbie

The concern that you have is for both wired and wireless or just for the wireless? If it is for wireless then try these troubleshooting steps:
A] With the help of Cisco Connect Software (if at all you have installed the router with the help of this software)
1] Open the software and go to the option which says "Router Settings"
2] Then click on the option which says "Advanced Settings" which will take you to the router's configuration page.
3] Then go to the Wireless tab, change Channel width to 20 MHz only and change the Channel to 6, 9, 11...Save the settings..
B] If you haven't installed Cisco Connect then you can log on to the router's user interface using it's default IP address in the browser which is 192.168.1.1 and type in 'admin' as the password leaving the username field blank. This will take you to the router's web interface and then follow steps as mentioned above to make the changes.
Then check the status of streaming video and netflix.

  • WRT300N has no access from wired to wireless addresses

I have a WRT300N that I used just for wireless access till now. If I connect two devices to wired ports they can see each other. All of the devices connected wireless can see each other and access the internet. Communication from wired to wireless doesn't work. I can't ping a wireless device from a wired one or vice versa. Firmware is latest as of 1/9/08. Settings are factory default other than turning on WEP. Any ideas?

Try the following test:  Connect a computer by wire to the WRT300N.   Verify that you can get a working Intenet connection.   In the computer, turn off any software firewall, including Windows Firewall.
    1)  Can you get a properly working Internet connection?
    2)  Can you ping 192.168.1.1  ?
If you cannot ping 192.168.1.1 then perhaps this is not your router's address. Go to "Start" > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
A black DOS box will appear. Type in "ipconfig" (with no quotes), then hit the Enter key. Look at the "Default Gateway". Is it 192.168.1.1 ?  Try to ping the "Default Gateway" address.
    3)  What is listed as the "Default Gateway" address?
    4)  Can you ping the "Default Gateway" address?
If you still have problems, maybe you have not gotten your software firewall completely turned off.  Some firewalls are hard to turn off.
If you are using Zone Alarm, right click on the ZA icon in the system tray (lower right corner of screen) and then click "Shutdown ZoneAlarm", and see if this fixes your problem. If this does not work, try the following with Zone Alarm: Open the ZAISS control center, go to Privacy, then temporarily turn off Ad Blocking and Cookie Control, and see if that fixes your problem.
If you are using Noton Internet Security with the Add-on Pack, be sure to turn off the Pop-up Blocker. Some users have reported that they needed to uninstall the entire Norton Add-on Pack.

  • Itunes not connecting via airplay on wired and wireless network

I have some computers on the wired part of my network, and others on wireless. My appletv2 shows in itunes on ALL (both wired and wireless) computers that there exists an AppleTv airplay speaker, but only the computers on the same "side" of the network (wired, or wireless) can actually connect and use the appletv as an airplay device. I have Bell Fibe25 and they provide 2 devices to achieve wireless connectivity, the main VDSL unit that has 4 lan ports on the back, and a basic Cisco WAP610N that connects into one of the lan ports on the VDSL unit for the wireless part.
My firewall is turned off as well.
Can anyone shed some light on why this is happening? My MacPro does not have wireless, and it would not be practical to connect my AppleTV2 to Ethernet cable.
    Thanks in advance,
    S

I have Windows 7 and the same resolution fixed my problem but you do it in a slightly different way:
    Open Control Panel.
    Network and Internet
    Network and Sharing Center
On the left menu bar select "Change adapter Settings"
Right Click on Network Adapter (Might be Wireless or Wired or change Both) select Properties
Under "The connection uses the following items:" UNCHECK - Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)
    Click OK
    Restart Itunes and refresh Connection!
    Thanks for your help Shane
