Wired windows keyboard with 2009 iMac

According to two different Apple tech support people, I must erase my harddrive to get my iMac functioning properly again. To do so, I had to get a wired keyboard to replace my bluetooth keyboard, since the latter doesn't work for my purpose. How do I erase my harddrive using this windows keyboard? What's the windows analog to Apple's "command r" ? Needless to say, I'm pretty much a dummy here but follow instructions well.

Whereas, not everyone here with an Intel iMac has installed, tried to install or has experience with BC & Windows, everyone there has or at least has an interest. You may attract help more quickly there.

You can use the keyboard you want with your iMac. However, note that some keys, as the Command key, aren't present in non-Apple keyboards. For example, in a non-Apple keyboard, you have to press the Windows key because that's the replacement of the Command key of an Apple keyboard

IMac Running Windows 7 - Wired Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keys

I dual boot using Boot Camp into OSX or Window 7. I wanted to use both my Apple Keyboard and Mighty Mouse, but the Mighty Mouse once it lost a connection I could not get it back easily so I switched to a Logitech wireless mouse. My wired Apple keyboard works except for the numeric keyboard to the right. There is no num lock so in WIndows 7 it thinks it is the function keys associated with a PC keyboard. Help.

Installing Windows 7 on 2009 iMac with Radeon 4850 graphics (Guide)

(This was originally posted in the iMac forum by me as a reply to a Windows 7 question, but I figured it may be useful here too. This may be adjustable to work on other 2009 series macs, but I make no promises. If anyone has any tips on how to get the things working that I mentioned as not, feel free to reply. I would love keyboard volume control specifically :p)
I was able to get Windows 7 64bit installed on my 2009 iMac. I was expecting it not to work, but in the end it did (with surprisingly little effort)
I have the following iMac:
Early 2009 iMac
3.06 GHz
4GB Ram
Radeon 4850
How to get video to work:
1) Download latest "desktop" video drivers from ATI's site (I used catalyst 9.7)
32 bit: http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=win7/windows-7-32bit
64 bit: http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=win7/windows-7-64bit
2) Run MobilityModder from the following link: http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool.php
3) Follow the directions on the page (When it sais Vista only, that means Win7 too)
How to get audio to work:
1) Download exe installer from the following page: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsCheck.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=24&PFid=24 &Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false
2) Run the installer
Things that do work
Video (Built in version isn't the best, follow directions above)
Audio (Built in version doesn't work, follow directions above)

Bluetooth (mouse and keyboard) (Built in)
Things that I haven't figured out
1) How to get the 64bit apple software frontend to install (the taskbar icon)
2) How to get volume keys to work (the apple keyboard driver actually is worse than default)
3) Things like changing brightness (but I would assume this would go with getting the apple frontend software to work)
Comments
1) It is blazing fast
2) While this works on 64bit, I don't think 32bit would be much different to setup
3) Using the latest ATI drivers are important because they support the new Windows 7 driver model (WDDM 1.1). While older versions may work (like bootcamp 2.1), they won't be the most advanced or fastest performing.
4) While I haven't been able to install the bootcamp software (Win7 warns that it is incompatible), from what I've read (all the posts about DPC latency), it is probably better off for performance
5) Your mileage may vary, I haven't tested this on anything other than my 24" radeon 4850 iMac. I also haven't tested it on 32bit, so don't blame me if something doesn't work right. Basically, if you break something it isn't my fault
6) Bluetooth pairing is somewhat quirky, it usually goes pretty quickly for the mouse. Sometimes it will take multiple tries (canceling out, and starting again, etc) especially for the keyboard. Once everything is paired though it works perfect without any extra drivers.
7) Remember this isn't supported by Apple yet.

How can i install windows 7 on 2009 imac with out opitcal drive

Im trying to install windows 7 on my late 2009 Imac.
I have a single ssd installed which i partitioned (or try to) but i cant seems to get it right.
i tried VirtualBox,parrells,VMware method but seem to run into errors all the time.
i tried changing the bootcamp info file so that i can boot it via usb but no luck
could someone pls explain to me how to do this
my superdrive wont read a bought copy of windows 7

If your computer with an internal optical drive you must use that to install Windows in a Boot Camp partition.
If you are having problems with Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox virtual machines you should visit their respective sites for assistance.

How do I properly install a USB windows keyboard on an iMac?

Greetings everyone,
I have a new windows keyboard model Haveit Magic Eagle X1 gaming keyboard that has several problems being installed on the OSX system. This is a windows gaming keyboard that, for the most part has installed properly. The two main problems are the fact that the control keys have become the shift keys, and the lock keys (CAPS, Num, and Scroll) do not illuminate on the keyboard. I have scoured the internet, but can only find pages on getting apple keyboards to work with windows and not the other way around. Furthermore, I have switched the USB port that the keyboard was plugged in, to every USB port on the iMac. In addition to this, I have gone to system information to see if the power specification for the USB port matched the power requirement for the keyboard. To that end, the iMac has 500mA available for each port, where only 100mA is required to power the keyboard. I have found nothing on the manufacturers web page, www.haveit.hk, to help me in this matter. I hope that someone has found a solution, which, logically will probably be a third party software download which I am currently unaware of.

I may have spoke too soon. I cannot custom swap the control and shift keys, AND this doesn't help my CAPS lock indicators on my keyboard.

Can I use a USB Windows Keyboard w/my iMac while running Windows in Paralle

I have an iMac with Parallels and Windows 7. There's this one DOS program that I have to use for work, and it requires use of the function keys on a Windows keyboard. I know I can remap the keys on the bluetooth keyboard that came with my iMac, but just for simplicity, can I just go buy a USB Windows keyboard and expect that the function keys will work with this program?
I don't know if the fact that OSX is running behind the scenes might prevent the function keys from being passed along to Windows and the DOS program.

VM will often 'disable' and not function with keyboard function keys as they would normally running Windows natively.
That was one of my reasons for abandoning Fusion. All I could have and use was a "generic" keyboard and mouse, when the MS drivers in Windows I would have a lot of really handy useful keys for doing things.
And I use MS keyboards for years, in OS X and then in Windows.

What password safety programs are compatible with 2009 IMAC

I would like to know opinions of KEEPAS as a password safety program. Is it usable with 2009 24" IMAC, OS LION? Thanks.

I recently used bootcamp to create a windows partition on my imac. Everything works fine except the windows side doesen't recognize the imac's built in speakers. I'm not much of a computer wiz, so I need help! Anyone?

Using a laptop as a qwerty keyboard with an imac

Hi,
I have an imac, and i am in the middle of a project which is on a deadline.
I don't have time to get to an apple shop, or to wait for a delivery, but for various reasons i am short of a qwerty keyboard for the imac. I have a powerbook G4 here, and wondered if the keyboard from that could somehow be used to run the imac.
Is it possible?

If I were you I'd either:
1. Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences... > International > Input Menu tab then add check Keyboard Viewer.
Also check that Show Input Menu in Menu Bar is checked.
Then in any application, on the Union Flag on the right of menu bar choose Show Keyboard Viewer. You can then 'type' using the mouse.
2. Any USB keyboard will work though! so if you can scrounge a PC one in short order.
3. I'd also advise trying a different USB port with the current keyboard to see if that helps.

Lion Random crash with 2009 iMac 27

Hi
Am I the only one to have some randoms crashs with Lion on an iMac 27 late 2009 (i7 + ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB, 16 GB Ram) ?
I noticed that some iMac 2011 were affected but haven't found anything about the iMacs late 2009.
I can crash very easily my iMac while playing with Starcraft II, just to give an example. This iMac used to be very very stable with Snow Leopard, the only reboots were to apply the security fixes or power outages.
Any idea ?
I hope this is going to be fixed with 10.7.2 !!

Can't offer help, but I've daily BSODs with the same model - same GPU, only difference that I've only 8 Gigs of RAM.
Mainly happens with anything video or picture related, so mostly while using safari or other browser. All the time before "up"-grading to Lion I never had one single crash...

Questions on A1048 keyboard with 2011 iMac

I am not a fan of the Bluetooth keyboard and started using an older Apple keyboard (model A1048).
Everything seems to work ok except some of the function keys appear to do nothing while other functions such as screen brightness, dashboard etc. work but with different function keys from the BT keyboard. The only thing that appears to be "missing" is the forward, play/pause, and back functions (F7/F8/F9 on the BT KB).
Also no "fn" key.
Any way to map these features to the unused function keys? Any other issues about using the older USB keyboard?

Number keys on Mac keyboard with Windows in boot camp

I am using the full size wired keyboard with my iMac. While I am in WIndows XP Pro on Boot Camp, I can not use the number keys on the right side. Is there any way I can make these work? It might be picky, but is sure annoying the crap out of me. Any thoughts?
