Wireframing/mock up tools

Does anyone have any suggestions of a good mockup tool for visually developing Iphone and Ipod applications? I see there are alot of them out there, but I dont want to have to test a dozen before finding a good one. Please, any suggestions would be awesome!

Hi,
I am not aware of anything for controls. The closest thing would be to refer to something in the enjoy demo center (transaction DWDM) and do a copy. You could also refer to examples in the style guide (BIBS) or reuse library.
Going forward, tools such as the floorplan manager for WD, should really help with this kind of thing.

  • What inspires a design for your personal/fun websites?

What personally do you do or experience that gives you inspiration in the design aspect of a website you build just for fun? Do you look at other websites and see their layout? Do you talk to friends? Draw something? I'm simply curious as I kinda hit a rut -- that is, I noticed a majority of the sites I've done are nearly the same layout. There's no real pizzaz, if you will, to the actual design aspect of it all.
Well, that or my disgusting lack of skill in Photoshop, Illustrator, and Flash

This is a very vague topic to discuss! Creativity - is the keyword. When/ Where/ How/ What is something we should figure out.
Personally, I follow the diamond principle. What > Why > How > What Else in every design initiative I take up.
What is it that has to be built/ made for this project? Brainstorm and shortlist many ideas, finalize on one. Also ask yourself why are you finalizing on the one you just did and why not the other concepts? Once you have an answer that justifies your choice, proceed.
Why am I doing this project the way I'm doing it? Many reasons - what is in it for me? Financially & for my love for design. The first one pays your bills. 2nd one helps you set benchmarks of your work. No two work that you take up should be the same. In fact, the 2nd work you take up should always be better than the 1st. Not always the case though - your 2nd client may not pay you the same that your 1st client did. Time crunches. Lack-of-creative-juice. Many. Also, this may be a good time you sit back and ask yourself if you're sure that you're not just doing it for 'making money'. To me, that is always secondary. Satisfaction in what you do is foremost in putting you on the right track on being a 'good designer'.
How will I do this project? Resources required, role clarity, paper sketch - actual design, wireframes, mock-ups - basically making sure everything you need (including little details) are all concrete before you begin. At no point during the project you want to look back and say 'Oh, I missed out on that! How am I going to move forward?'.
What Else can I do to: a. make this client happy so he stays with me on long-term projects, b. improvise this project to ensure it is a big plus in my portfolio, c. recommend to the client about making it better, d. help the client understand how he can plan his roadmap to improvement?
That said, the layouts - if they're the same in the work you do, it is either a mental-block that you've created for yourself or a standard you've set for yourself. It cant be that bad. All it takes is a few tweaks, lots of coffee, lots more of sleep. As a creative guy myself for almost a decade, I think the best way to overcome a 'creative-roadblock' is to have a good night's rest - I know it is very difficult to get. But when you do have a chance, take that break. You deserve it and it works wonders!
Coming to your other point, it aint wrong to take a look at other websites/ others' work as long as you don't do a Cmd + X/ C, Cmd + V. But, it's always good to get good inspiration from people whom you think 'inspire'.
Finally, you must take into consideration that a FOB designer, a 'wannabe' designer and an expert designer - all have 1 thing in common. The tools they have access to. Fine, some can't afford expensive calibration devices or super-expensive design tablets. But, as a designer, 2 major elements are your creativity and the softwares that bring them to life. They're common. Like you said, I use Photoshop, Illustrator, Fireworks, Flash & Dreamweaver myself - day in day out. These softwares are standard, the tools they offer are also standard. What differs is how each one uses it and leverages its functionality to bring to life what they pictured in mind. If this still doesn't work, there's something fundamentally wrong with their 'creativity' or 'creative ability'. No offense here, but this is the fact!
Off the head, I'd also like to share with you a website that I've fallen in love with in the past 4 months. I visit it almost once every week! Beautifuly made. www.blacknegative.com - jQuery is king and this site is a standing proof!
Also, I've recently been inspired by a TED bestseller Simon Sinek. His concept is very similar to mine. Of course, not mine - but a world standard roadmap building concept that I mentioned here - What, Why, How, What Else. Simon talks about it in terms of companies that excel vs companies that fell - How great leaders inspire action - marketing concepts per se. You may want to take a look at his video here - http://www.ted.com/talks/simon_sinek_how_great_leaders_inspire_action.html
PS: Creativity is not limited to 'design'. It's everywhere. We just have to capitalize.

  • Web site design

Hi i was wondering can photo shop be used as a mock up tool for websites ? 2. Can you slice a psd web file that can be used for making html files of a web site ? I'm asking because I'm wanting to make templates for muse or DW. For clients to use . Also to make a web site as a JPEG to showcase as portfolio
i took photography related classes so I'm teaching myself on the design from basics and use photoshop for other then editing photos
also does Photoshop touch have slice tool that can make psdx file of websites for on the go?
i noticed that DW or Muse does not have templates that's why I want to use photos for websites design

You've done a wonderful job on your site. I have no clue what rollovers or fade options are but would love to know. I just wanted to say job well done!

  • Fireworks not saving edits.

I have just done my 3rd html/images click thru mockup of a website using Fireworks. I have been experiencing much trouble with editing button symbols and also with button symbol pop up menus. It seems that in order to enable/disable a behavior such as "down state upon load" or to make changes to the appearance of a pop-up menu I must make one change, save the file, close the file, and then re-open. If I try to make more than one change or don't close and re-open, the changes I made do not "stick". this is a real pain and hassle. Has anyone else experienced this?
I have always tried to avoid blaming software for problems I have. I must, however, say that I find Fireworks to be a very quirky and poorly functioning application. There are a number of other problems like confusing menus and strange behaviors and lack of functionality. I like having the mock-up tool and it could be very useful but......I use Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Acrobat Pro all with no complaints. Fireworks needs attention from Adobe IMHO. (end of rant)
So has anyone experienced the problem with editing button symbols/pop-up menus and not having the edits "stick", or is just me? Thanks!

Maybe you are exporting the original. Try choosing H.264 and you should get an export of your adjusted clip in mp4 format which can be uploaded to YouTube, Vimeo etc.

  • Fireworks CS4 as Wireframe Tool

In the past I have used OmniGraffle for creating wireframes but soon realized some of its limitation. I work extensively with Photoshop and Dreamweaver CS4 so I thought it was only appropriate to use a tool from the same family for creating wireframes.
Fireworks CS4 is missing (or I'm not finding) a few key features that I really need.
Bulleted Lists - I need the ability to input bulleted lists. I could cheat and create graphics for the bullets but this isn't what I want. If I modify the bulleted item's text, the images won't align if the text shrinks or expands in height.
Tables - I don't mean tables for page layout. I need the ability to input a table to hold data. As an example, I am creating a wireframe for a local college that is displaying course information. Information such as Course Name, Course Number, and Credits need to be included. Laying this data in a table with the headers mentioned above is what I'm searching to do.
If anyone know how to go about doing the above, please let me know. Under a tight deadline on this one.
    Thanks,
    Grant Novey

You may try to use some proxy server, to check?
Meanwhile, I hope I can help:
I will copy the Grid Autoshape here (Aaron won't mind, I am sure;-) so that you can download and use it!
    "" GRID 1.2
This AutoShape allows you to create a grid of rectangles, with padding and alternating fill/stroke styles – useful for mocking up tables.
Update: Minor bug fix that caused breakage after restarting Fireworks. ""

In the attached ZIP are all files that Aaron has posted on his website, and above I have quoted his original description of the auto shape.
Hope this works for you this way!

  • Mock RFP for SUN network management tool, desperate 4 help, just need specs

OK, I have a project that in essence is a mock Request for Proposal (RFP), I play as an intern, & our instructor roleplays the manager we need to convince. The different network management tools that were available were for example; HP Openview, Cisco Works, Sniffer....& I of course chose SunNet. We need to gather information on the tool, then turn around & design a relatively simple network from the specs that were given, & finally discuss how the management tool's abilities could benefit the (mock) company...power point presentation & all.
Here it is from the homework sheet given to us...."These products will need to be useful in a 5000 node network that has four main locations that are primarily Ethernet. There is a legacy 100 nodes of Token Ring attached to a mainframe. Cisco or Foundry routers connect the Four main locations, with swiches employed. Other connections to these sites are done via DSL or ISDN. Additional considerations are wireless communications, VOIP & Content delivery systems.
I know this is a lot & I'm not asking for someone to do all this for me, just simply provide any information you know about Enterprise management tools 2.0 or 3.0,or anything you may feel better suits my needs, as the links I have surfed about them give little to nothing about specifics that I need to make any argument. If you have any links send them...if you have anyting in hard copy I will pay for postage... I need to get this done & have little time as I go to school & work full time at Motorola (but only as a contractor), so I'm starting to choke & need help....any u can give is so very appreciated....& sorry to make this request a publishable novel here on the board, but thats what it is. Thanks again......Mark

A good solution. Liked it very much. Can you please make it a technet blog for others.

  • What are Wireframes in portal? is it a sap tool?

    Hi  Guru's,
What are Wireframes in portal? is it a sap tool?
According to my search in web it seems to be a tool where we will be developing prototype for our web project.
Does sap has any new tool which is similar to Wireframes.
    Regards,
    Kiran Kumar K

    Hi Kiran,
As you told we mean wireframes to be a prototype for our web projects.
WE do have same in SAP xApp EPM u2013 Employee Process Management
    Please check the below link.
    http://www.sapdesignguild.org/editions/edition7/xapps_guided_proc.asp
Also we must understand that SAP cross applications (xApps), xKN (Knowledge Network) and xEPM (Employee Process Management) target the customer needs by not starting from a transactional business scenario but rather from a people-centric work process. Hence for the customer targets it is important that new design ideas are tested with users to ensure that the design truly fits the users' needs.
Apart from this we also have Wireframe as a toolbox element in Visual composer which displays the outline of model element.

  • What tools does Microsoft use to mock UI interfaces, flowchart, use cases, and UML diagrams?

I have searched google, but was not able to find article or blogs to answer this question. The questions asked here are very old. So I think this is a very relevant question today.
We are a .NET group and we to update how we storyboard our application development. What tools does Microsoft use to mock UI interfaces, flowcharts, and use cases? Specifically for projects that are either C# .NET MVC 5 and above (looking forward to
    vNext).
In the past, power point was able to do some of these things, but it seems it has been deprecated? Does Visio use these things? Also, is Visual Studio's 2013 UML diagram any good or is there another tool in Microsoft's bag of goodies that has more options?
I have read about blend, but it does not seem to be .NET MVC specific.
Again, this is asking about what tools Microsoft teams usually use to storyboard as our team would like to mimic the more contemporary processes. We are in the process of upgrading our .NET applications and feel it is time to update our workflow process
    as well.
Any book recommendations on TFS 2013 and agile are welcomed as well.

  • Creating screen mock-ups

    Hi Apex Guru's-
Could some one tell me how to develop screen mock-ups using APEX ? I have used off the shelf products to develop screen designs but how can we do it using APEX itself.
    Thanks,
    -Seenu

I'll second Dan's suggestion of a wireframe drawing tool such as Balsamiq mockups. I use it in the design phase with my clients because it covers most UI that you will find in web application design.
Its inexpensive, very clear and, above all, very quick to use. By combining it with a few examples of the Apex theme you intend to use you can give the end user a very clear idea of the actual UI. I've also had some clients use it to amend UI ideas themselves.
Loads better than trying to do the mockup with Apex alone.

  • Interactive phone app mock-up

    Hi All,
I would like to build a mock up of an android or iphone app with a littel interactivity.  I have the Adobe Master Suite, but I am assuming that Fireworks would be the best program?  There are a number of videos on Website mock-ups using Fireworks.  Is this a common use of Fireworks and are their any resources available for phone app mock-ups?
    Thanks,
    Randy

Yes it can be used. In fact there are free, high quality templates available on the web for both Iphone and Android OS's. The real issue is what kind of interactivity are you hoping for? FW won't reproduce swiping, for example.
Less than a couple minutes spent on Google brought up these resource results and more:

  • New development with time remap tool

It turns out my time remap tool works just fine in other projects just not this one. I do have alot of still shots with some motion graphics which is starting to extend my render times extensively. My question is, how do I solve this rendering time problem? Is there a way manage rendered footage better? Compress it? I'm new to this motion graphics and would appreciate any help.
    thanx
    John

    John,
Keyframing smooth moves takes a little bit of practice and a BIG Canvas window to really see what you're doing. You'll be using the Canvas window and the Motion tab of the Viewer window a lot for this.
Once you have the Canvas window up-sized (but still keep it at "Fit to Window" or smaller), set it to Image+Wireframe mode. When you click on or highlight a clip in the Timeline, you should see the Wireframe for that clip in the Canvas window (as long as the playhead remains over that clip). But first, double click a clip in the Timeline to load it into the Viewer window then open the Motion tab.
Depending on what you want to do, you can approach most keyframed motion tasks two ways; move the Wireframe in the Canvas window, or enter values in the Viewer window. I usually do a bit of both.
When you set a keyframe that shows up as a green dot (Scale, Rotation, Crop, Opacity, etc), you can right-click on that keyframe and select "Smooth" from the contextual menu. You'll see the purple bezier handles added to the keyframe. You can leave them as they are, or you can move those handles to manipulate the desired action. But for items like the Center control (black dot keyframe), you don't have this option in the Viewer window. Say you want to move the center point over the duration of the clip. Set the beginning and ending keyframe - or just set the beginning keyframe then move the playhead to the end point and manually drag the Wireframe in the Canvas window to the new location and FCP will automatically add a new keyframe. You should now see the path of the clip shown in the Canvas window displayed as dotted line. Right-click on the end or beginning keyframe and select "Ease In/Ease Out" from the contextual menu. Now you should see the same purple bezier handles added. Again, you can use the handles to smooth out movement, or slow down or accelerate a clip (by extending or shortening the length of the handle). If you have a multiple keyframed motion path, you can make wonderfully smooth curves with the bezier handles.
For more info, look up Bezier in the user's manual, or better yet, go to Amazon.com and buy Kevin Monahan's book; "Motion Graphics and Effects in Final Cut Pro."

  • Using photo shop and muse together. mock up to final design

Hi as .you know from me asking a million questions. i just heard that photo shop can be used as a mock up for web design.  from this video i saw.  i am wondering should this be the work flow that i should be using instead of just jumping into muse like i did before in Dreamweaver.? if thats the case i am willing to change my habit.  i keep hearing that all ideas come from a sketch layout. with the new photo shop sketch tool for ipad.  i am wondering if thats going to be the core for web site ideas.  then finish it in photo shop and finalize it in muse . again design is my weak point thats why i have my degree in commercial graphics/ photography. thats why i enjoy web design. but want to keep it simple.  so would you recommend this idea?
Placing a PSD in Adobe Muse - Muse-Themes.com - YouTube

Integration between Muse and Photoshop is limited to placing PSD files into Muse as images or as rollover buttons at the moment. So if you are looking at a workflow that web designers use with Photoshop > Dreamweaver after slicing, then that is not possible in Muse right now.
Photoshop and Dreamweaver integration on the other hand has been drastically improved with introduction of the Extract service and panel in Dreamweaver. You can read more about that here: Extract a Photoshop design into code in Dreamweaver | Adobe Dreamweaver CC tutorials
