Wireless 802.11r and .k on WLC

Hello all,
I've seen that in 7.4 and later Release on the WLC5508 you can configure 802.11r and 11k support using Fast Transaction so that iOS7 won't experience connection loss during Roaming...my question is on the same WLAN can I configure 802.1X and FT-802.1X Authentication so that I'll be able to have on the same SSID non802.11r and 802.11r capable client? Or this setup will create association problem ?

Maybe this can help explain it also:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/controller/7.3/configuration/guide/b_wlc-cg_chapter_0111.html#d155467e2632a1635
Legacy clients cannot associate with a WLAN that has 802.11r enabled if the driver of the supplicant that is responsible for parsing the Robust Security Network Information Exchange (RSN IE) is old and not aware of the additional AKM suites in the IE. Due to this limitation, clients cannot send association requests to WLANs. These clients, however, can still associate with non-802.11r WLANs. Clients that are 802.11r capable can associate as 802.11i clients on WLANs that have both 802.11i and 802.11r Authentication Key Management Suites enabled. The workaround is to enable or upgrade the driver of the legacy clients to work with the new 802.11r AKMs, after which the legacy clients can successfully associate with 802.11r enabled WLANs. Another workaround is to have two SSIDs with the same name but with different security settings (FT and non-FT).

Just figured out that iPhone 5, iPhone 4S and the new iPad(not iPad 2) running iOS6 can support 802.11r roaming with Cisco WLC 7.3.
Find more detail in my blog. Hope this helps.

  • 802.11r (Fast Transition) - multiple WLANs required for legacy clients?

    Hello,
I have a Cisco 5508 WLC with AIR-CAP3502E-E-K9 APs. I want to enable 802.11r (Fast Transition) and understand that some legacy clients may not support 802.11r and therefore if you select, for example, FT 802.1X as an authentication key management, legacy clients may not be able to connect. The Cisco documentation suggests creating a second WLAN with the same SSID, so one WLAN uses FT 802.1X and the other WLAN uses 802.1X.
But when you edit the layer 2 security for a WLAN it is possible to select FT 802.1X and 802.1X. Does this mean there isn't a need for two WLANs with the same SSID? If the client can't authenticate using FT 802.1X will it fall back to 802.1X? Or is the recommendation to always create two WLANs with the same SSID but different authentication key management and the client will connect to which ever one has the "best capabilities"?
For testing I can't find any non-802.11r devices so it's difficult for me to see what would happen if I had one WLAN but with both FT 802.1X and 802.1X selected
    Many thanks.

If you remove FT from the WLAN, does the 3G connect ? When FT is enabled, some clients wont connect, thats been my experience.

  • WLC 5760 and 802.11r/CCKM support

    Experts;
I have a couple of 5760 controllers running as MC/MA and I am planning to enable Layer 3 roaming between the two 5760 MC/MA controllers. On a 5508 controller running Air-IOS there is an option, "fast transition", for devices that support 802.11r, my understanding if a device doesn't support 802.11r "fast transition" should not be checked.
I like to know if there is a similar command or option for 802.11r support on a 5760 controller and if the only configuration option to establish mobility between the 5760 controllers is that both controllers need to be in the same mobility group.
    Thanks;
    Juan

    Hi Juan,
my understanding if a device doesn't support 802.11r "fast transition" should not be checked
This is because certain clients that does not support 802.11r (like Mac OSX) won't like when SSID advertising 802.1X & 802.r FT (802.11r mixed mode) on the same SSID. Therefore they will not associate to that SSID. See this post as it listed 802.11r supported & unsupported devices/OS.
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/12314591/8021r-and-fast-roaming
You need to have IOS-XE 3.6 onward to support 802.11r mix mode. (7.6 or 8.0 for AireOS codes)
Regarding config you will find that options (enabling & Over the DS tick box) under SSID  configuration (refer link provided by Daniel). If you want to go more into detail how these different options work please read below, I have used 3850 in these post, but config should be same for a 5760.
    1. http://mrncciew.com/2014/09/06/cwsp-802-11r-ft-association/
    2. http://mrncciew.com/2014/09/08/cwsp-802-11r-over-the-ds-ft/
    3. http://mrncciew.com/2014/09/07/cwsp-802-11r-over-the-air-ft/
In your case both 5760 should be in same mobility group in order to MDID to be same which is required for 802.11r fast roaming.

  • [SOLVED] Wireless 802.1x PEAP Windows 7 and Windows 2012 NPS and CA

    Hello,
We are in progress of migrating our RADIUS (Windows 2003 R2) and Certificate (Windows 2003 R2) servers to 2012 (R2). This went fine, no problems. After that we have changed
our Wireless controller a Cisco 5508. We have change our certificate from a 1024bits to a 2048bits certificate.
We tested the other certificate functions and that went fine too.
But we experience a problem with wireless 802.1x in combination with Windows 7 machines. We have Windows 8 and 8.1 machines that do not experience this problem and wireless 802.1x?
We recreated the wireless policy but also no success.
We have seen this problem before, with a customer who had a Windows 2008 R2 certificate server and Windows XP machines with wireless 802.1x . Exact the same problem. After
decommissioning the Windows 2008 R2 certificate server and changed it to a Windows 2003 R2 certificate server, there where no problems any more.
It looks like that older versions of Windows do not work with newer certificate servers?
Do we miss something? Can someone confirm this.
We already looked for these forum posts, but with no success

  • 802.11r Fast Transition and iPhones

    Hi everyone
just a clarification about Fast Transition for me:
Following environment: WiSMv2 with 7.4.121, al lot of 1240 APs, over 200x 7921/7925 WLAN Phones and few iPhone 5s / 5c with 7.1 iOS.
The environment work very well for Cisco 792x Phones.
Now the Customer would like to use Jabber on iPhone therefore I create a new SSID for the iPhone and configured it with Fast Transition option.
According to the Enterprise Best Practice for Apple Mobile guide I have to enable the “Over-the-Distribution System” because I user AP 1240
    also the old generation.
Further I must enable following over the CLI (options are not available over the GUI):
    config wlan assisted-roaming neighbor-list enable
    config wlan assisted-roaming dual-list disable
    config wlan assisted-roaming prediction enable
Is this the correct approach ?
    Regards
    Marco

    Hi Marco,
you described enabling FT (802.11r) & AP assisted Roaming (802.11k) in the above. Here about some details about  how those work.
    1. 802.11r FT Association
    2. 802.11r Over-the-Air FT
    3. 802.11r Over-the-DS FT
    4. 802.11k AP Assisted Roaming
I would enable one at a time (802.11r or 802.11k) & see the behavior of these jabber clients when roaming.

  • 802.1a is admin down. wlc 4402 and ap1252

    Hello all,
I am trying to enable the 802.11a and use the 5Ghz band in my house. However, I am having difficulty in doing this. Please see screenshot below. I have select AU (Australia) as my regulatory domain (2nd image). 802.11a band is enabled(3rd image), but the interface is still down (1st image). Australia regulatory code is -Z. Not sure why -A and -N are showing up

  • Airpcap and WireShark support for 802.11k, 802.11r, 802.11u?

    Folks,
    I have a need to troubleshoot/test 802.11k, 802.11u, and 802.11r messaging.
Does anyone know if AirPcap Nx + Wireshark will capture and properly decode these 802.11 amendments:
    802.11k
    802.11r
    802.11u
I have looked in Wireshark forums and seen references to all of the above amendments but I can't find anything conclusive to indicate the level of support for these headers/fields/messages.
    Thanks for any insight.
    Joey

    George,
I don't know yet. However, to begin testing devices I'll need a tool that can decode the protocols so I can see who supports what.
Based on my research for evidence sake,
Wireshark 1.7.0 dev branch appears to:
    Support 802.11u fully
    Support 802.11r fully
    Support 802.11k partially
The 802.11k information elements I can't find or are not supported for 802.11k are:
    7.3.2.42 Measurement Pilot Transmission Information
    7.3.2.43 BSS Available Admission Capacity
7.3.2.44 BSS AC Access Delay supported
    7.3.2.45 RRM Enabled Capabilities

  • AX and wireless 802.11g printer sharing

Would anybody know to configure this:
    Situation:
An existing AX connected to the internet and sharing it's internet access with two users - working fine
    Question:
Is it possible to configure this network so that a coexisting wireless 802.11g printer can also be shared between the two users (wirelessly - not using the USB port on the AX), without the users having to alternate their Airport card between Internet-network and Printer-network?

It is possible if the printer can be configured to wirelessly join the network provided by the AX.

  • Anyone familiar with 802.11r?

    Hi,
We have a cisco WLC that provides a WLAN supports 802.11r. So I compiled wpa_supplicant 2.2 with 802.11r enabled (3.12.18 kernel) with FT-EAP as keymgmt.
It connected, worked. But when I roamed the client, I saw that it reconnected (or reassociated? I did not have log at hand) which was not supposed. Then I checked WLC debug information, I saw the client was not recognized as 802.11r capable.
      What should I check?

    An easier way?
Sir, anything beyond iWeb requires effort.

  • Dual Band (5ghz and 2.4 ghz) Wireless Network Config and Dropped Connection

Hi, I have an Airport Extreme (802.11N) and a Motorola WR850G (802.11A/B/G) that I'm trying to connect in a dual band setup - but something in my setup is causing the Airport to drop it's connection (before the connection is dropped - everything works great). After I lose connectivity, both routers show up in my list of wireless networks, the light stays green, but I don't have local or internet access. When I try to reconnect, the log on times out. Also, the Airport isn't displayed in the Airport Utility (light is green on the airport itself though). Unplugging and resetting the Airport Allows all computers on the network to connect locally and to the internet for a few hours until the connection drops again. While it is up and running, I have no problems streaming movies off the connected Airdisk, navigating the internet, and connecting both N and G devices to the network.
I'd love to hear from you if you've gotten a similar setup to work, and if possible, have you provide the settings you used to make this work. I've looked around quite a bit and haven't seen a detailed description of the process (even from the Apple documentation). Also, advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated since my wireless networking knowledge is pretty basic.
    My configuration:
Time Warner cable modem connected to the Airport's WAN port. WR850G connected by LAN port to Airport's LAN port. Bridge Mode check box selected on WR850G. Airport setup for 802.11n (5Ghz). Unique SSIDs to determine which network is 'N'. Same password for both networks. My Firmware and utilities are up to date.
    Computers/Devices on Network:
Two Macs with Airport Extreme N cards. A Vista PC with a D-link N card (only compatible with 2.4 Ghz so it connects to the G network). A Vista PC with a GB ethernet card connected to the Airport Extreme. Various other G devices like iPod touches and an old iBook. Airdisk connected to the Airport Extreme.
    Thanks,

I removed the second router (Moto wr850g) and everything seems to be working smoothly. It must be some settings on that one that are causing the problem, but I haven't been able to get it configured correctly. I noticed there were some IP conflicts with my wireless wanting to use the old Moto router IP and trying to assign my Mac an IP from that router. Does anyone know specifically what needs to be disabled on a router in bridge mode? Since I have a third party router there aren't any handy wizards that can configure it for me.
    Thanks again

  • Cisco Systems vs "CSIRO" 802.11a and 802.11g infringed upon the '069 patent

    Hi,
any news about Cisco Systems and the "CSIRO" 802.11a and 802.11g infringed upon the '069 patent ?
    http://www.buffalotech.com/products/wireless/
    Dear Customer
As you may be aware, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation ("CSIRO") sued Buffalo, Inc. and Buffalo Technology (USA), Inc. ("Buffalo"), for alleged infringement of United States Patent No. 5,487,069 ("the '069 patent"). Subsequently, CSIRO also asserted its patent against the entire wireless LAN industry, including, Microsoft, Intel, Accton, SMC and Netgear.
In it's lawsuit against Buffalo, CSIRO claimed certain Buffalo wireless networking products compliant with IEEE standards 802.11a and 802.11g infringed upon the '069 patent. Buffalo believed at that time and continues to believe that there are no grounds for CSIRO's allegations of infringement. The United States district court, however, found Buffalo to infringe the '069 patent and enjoined the importation and sale of Buffalo's IEEE 802.11a and 802.11g compliant products.
CSIRO's lawsuits are against the entire wireless LAN industry and could affect the supply of wireless LAN products by any manufacturer, not just Buffalo. The entire industry is resisting CSIRO's attempts to enjoin the sale of wireless LAN products. Recently, Microsoft, 3COM Corporation, SMC Networks, Accton Technology Corporation, Intel, Atheros Communications, Belkin International, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Nortel Networks, Nvidia Corporation, Oracle Corporation, SAP AG, Yahoo, Nokia, and the Consumer Electronics Association filed briefs in support of Buffalo's position that injunctive relief is inappropriate in this case.
During the period of time that the injunction is in effect (10/1/2007), Buffalo cannot offer for sale, sell, import, or use its IEEE 802.11a and 802.11g compliant products in the United States. A list of the products covered by the injunction is attached here . The injunction does not prohibit sales of pre-existing inventories of products by Buffalo's customers. In addition, Buffalo has secured CSIRO's agreement to permit the replacement of defective products under warranty. None of Buffalo's other products are currently affected by this injunction.
While Buffalo believes that it will be successful in reversing the district court's decision and will obtain a stay of the injunction pending a decision on the merits, the Court of Appeals has not yet issued a decision. Should the Court of Appeals issue a decision staying the injunction, you will be promptly notified. After the stay is issued or a favorable decision on the merits is obtained, Buffalo will be able to resume the supply of IEEE 802.11a and 802.11g products
Please rest assured that Buffalo continues to stand behind their products and will continue to support all of our loyal customers as it relates to product warranties, technical support and the like without interruption.

I suspect after reading the patent and the litigation that you mentioned above, that the US District Court decision will be reversed as the patent appears to be very vague in its contsruction and verbage. Furthermore, the intent to hold the IEEE hostage on the ratification of 802.11n will not bode well in the court's eyes. If in fact the case is reversed, I believe that the members of CSIRO will be in danger of lost profits litigation from Buffalo. Stay tuned to this bat channel.

  • Photosmart C7250 wireless 802.11b fails

My new C7250 works well with USB and wired ethernet, but fails miserably (prints slowly, if at all) on my wireless 802.11b network.  All other devices work well on my wireless network.  I've spent many hours with HP and exhausted their first line support.  They supposedly have opened a case but I have heard nothing in a week.  Meanwhile, I took a network trace using WireShark and it shows a large number of retransmissions.  (I'm expert with application/network performance profiling.)  All you have to do is browse to http://192.168.1.xxx/ to test transmission -- don't even need to install drivers or printers to see the errors.  This problem appears to be with wireless support on the C7250.
Has anyone experienced problems or success with 802.11b on this device?  How about 802.11g?  I would be willing to upgrade my wireless if I knew that it would resolve the problem.
What does it take to escalate a probem with HP for resolution?

All 2004 and newer wireless HP Inkjet printers are compatible with 802.11g and 802.11b networks (otherwise we couldn't get 802.11g Wi-Fi certification).  Besides testing for interoperability, we test for a minimum wireless throughput at the TCP layer.
I'd like to see the internal connectivity report that you can generate by pressing the <setup> and <#> buttons simultaneously.  Scan the report to a memory card, copy it to your PC and post the image here.
It will tell me information about your wireless network and other networks in the area.
I have a couple of other questions:
Does the slow printing go away after a power cycling the printer and then does it return later?
Does the slow printing go away after a power cycling the wireless-router and then does it return later?
Are you seeing retransmissions of TCP, 802.3 (ethernet) frames or 802.11 frames?  I wasn't sure at what layer you are sniffing the data at?
What make and model 802.11b wireless-router are you using?
Do you have encryption enabled?  Does disabling encryption change the speed of printing?
How many wireless PC's (Macs?) to you have on your network?  Do they all exhibit slow printing?
Have you changed the default fragmentation settings of your wireless-router?
At home, I routinely get 1.5 Mbytes/sec transfer rates between my 802.11g wireless-routers and my HP printers and about 700 Kbytes/sec in 802.11b mode.
One other thing you can try is to go to the printers internal web page, browse over to the Networking, Wireless, Advanced page and enable the configuration "In an infrastructure network use 802.11b behavior".

  • In Snow Leopard, is there a way to import a wireless 802.1x System Profile via Terminal?  If so how?

I am trying to deploy a Snow Leopard image via Casper running on a Lion server.  Everything works fine but I'd like to be able to have the image include a wireless 802.1x system profile without having to do it manually post.  I had it as part of my base image but for whatever reason it breaks during the process so I'd like to be able to create a task sequence to deploy it during the image process.  What's the best way to do this?  Thanks in advance!

    Hey SchenkerBob,
It is possible to disable non-system fonts temporarily for all applications using the Font Book application. This article explains how to do so -
Mac Basics: Font Book - Apple Support
    In particular -
    Disable and enable specific fonts
In situations where you'd like to prevent a font from being available in applications, but you don't want to completely remove the font from your Mac, you can use Font Book to disable the font.
In Font Book, click "All Fonts" in the Collection column.
Click the name of the font in the Font column.
Choose Disable "Font Name" Family from the Edit menu.
Since it might be problematic to have to disable each font individually, you can create a collection of fonts and disable the collection. See the article for how to create a font collection -
    Organize fonts as collections
When working with fonts, you may discover that you use certain fonts frequently, but rarely use others. To make it easier to find the font you are looking for, you can organize your fonts into collections.
From the Font Book File menu, choose New Collection.
Type in a name for the new collection.
Click "All Fonts" in the Collection column.
Drag the fonts that you want from the Font column onto the name of your new collection in the Collection column.
You can then disable collections of fonts -
You can also disable or enable all fonts in a collection: Click the name of the collection in the Collection column, then choose Disable "Collection Name" or EnableCollection Name" " from the Edit menu.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Happy computing,
