Wireless access issue

Hi,
We are using Cisco 1242 wireless access point for our client. using SSID and wep they are able to access the wireless network.as a part of the client standards we are not broadcasting the SSID.manually we will configure every thing for user computer.now the problem for some of the user is they are unable to wirelss network & even they are unable to view the AP in available network but the same laptop is working in the home. wht we observed is when he comes from unsecured zone to secure zone which is my access point he is facing this problem. for trouble shooting purpose i have broad casted the SSID. and now he can able to view my AP's SSID.
Some one please help me how to trouble shoot this issue with out broadcasting.

I have seen this when clients have old drivers. Compare the driver version with clients that work to those you have issues with.

  • Wireless access issue on 1 of 2 laptops

I have a WRT54G router. I have an Apple G5 desktop wired to the router. I also have an Apple G4 latop that operates wirelessly
without any problems. I was just issued an XP laptop from work. I have verified and re-verified the wep key. My XP machine sees the network but can't access it. I also verified that the mac address for the wireless card is on my pc list. I am sure that the problem is so simple but I just can't see it.

Did you ever get an answer to your problem I have a similar one with an older wireless router and Broadcom on XP.  I have two other XP devices using Intel Pro Wireless and they both work fine.  Spent an hour with Compaq tech support and with Linksys with no answers

  • Apple TV 2G (Airplay and Homesharing) can only stream from devices on the same wireless access point range??

    connection:
40 Mbps Fiber Broadband connection using:
    Devices:
    1. Main Modem/router (AP1): Huawei HG8245 (provided by ISP) - Wireless enabled.
    2. Remote Access point (AP2): Linksys/Cisco E3200 Wireless gigabyte router flashed with DD-WRT v24-sp2 (06/14/11) mini (Cascaded -wired- LAN to LAN from main modem).
    3. Wireless Repeater to cover a dead spot  (AP3): Linksys/Cisco E1000 wireless repeater.
    4. Apple Tv (AT2G) with home sharing/airplay enabled.
5.( Ipad) with home sharing on itunes enabled.
    6. Win7 (PC) using iTunes with Home sharing enabled.
all devices are updated to their latest firmware.
In order to cover a large 3 story house with Wifi. I had (AP1) is located on the first floor, while (AP2) is located in the basement floor directly wired by LAN to LAN with (AP1). (AP3) is located on the Ground floor away from the living room to repeat wireless network into the back yard. While (AT2G) is located in the living room on the ground floor right in the middle of both (AP1) + (AP2) while connected via Wifi.
Network SSID, security, passphrase and wireless settings of (AP2) are identical to (AP1) to create a single big LAN/WLAN roaming network where all devices connected to both wireless access points can find/share the others. As understood, it's refered to as bridging.
I have noticed that my iphone/ipad does not show the airplay button anywhere within the wireless network. it seems that the apple TV randomly choses to connect to the AP with stronger signal, or switch to the other in case of a reboot to one of them.
to elaborate further, if i was sitting in the living room (groundfloor), trying to airplay some you tube contents via Wifi to my Apple TV, i may not find the airplay button available all the time, i found out the reason is while i'm wirelessly connected to AP1, the Apple TV was connected to AP2 and both deviced cannot detect each others to enable my purpose. that goes the same for Home Sharing. only if my Ipad/PC and Apple Tv are on the same wireless AP. they would detect each others immediately.
although, the second AP (AP2) is suppose to extend my wireless network of the same subnet in which any device connected can be found.
After all sorts of trial and error tweaking my router/access point, I thought the problem would be due to the Linksys 3200 capability of bridging WLAN and lacks few protocols that enables my purpose. i have flashed the firmware to a DD-WRT, but again, problem was not solved.
I have not tried having my Apple Tv wired to either router/AP, but i assume it may work well if i do so. i still need to solve this wireless connection issue though.
Am i the only one with this problem, would there be something wrong with my setup?
    Your feedback is highly appreciated.

You may or may not already have your network set up correctly, it's just that I can't tell from what you have said.
I have a main router provided by my ISP, I have several other Airport Extremes and Airport expresses connected by Ethernet, all set up to bridge the network created by the main router.
Each maker has their own settings, but bridging should be reasonably obvious. In simple terms my main router distributes IP addresses to all devices, the Airports bridge that network by passing these addresses to the devices from the main router. A base station that isn't in bridging mode will distribute its own addresses to the devices connected to it.
I don't really follow your next point.
instruction for configuration vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, the best course of action here is to refer to the manual. If everything is set up properly the addresses of everything on your network will have identical sets of numbers for the first 3 of 4 groups of numbers that make up an address, the last set must always be different. I think the part you are referring to with your DD-WRT is the option to have Ethernet and wifi bridged or not.
Some routers may be easier to configure than others, but generally speaking they should all work with the Apple TV. 5Ghz is less likely to suffer interference but it is much more likely to be blocked by solid objects, it may or may not be an advantage.

  • Is there a fix for the MBP wireless dropping issue?

I began to experience the Macbook Pro dropping wireless connectivity on my very 1st Apple in 2008.  At the end of the day my machine was replaced with a new Macbook Pro mid 2010.  It appeared to be working just fine until about 2-3 months ago when I started dropping my wireless printer connection.  I searched the internet hoping for a driver update from HP or something from Apple and each time I found something, the problem still existed.  I even thought that by upgrading to Lion would resolve any issues that I have with my MBP wireless connectivity issue.  After upgrading to buying a new router, new printer and upgrading to Lion; the wireless dropping issue still remains unresolved!  I know there are several hundred in not thousands of people who are having the same problem so what are we supposed to do?
When my 1st MBP was replaced in 2010 I had to stop working because I was diagnosed with "Failed Back Surgical Syndrome" and was in the process of applying for disability.  Something in the back of my mind said that I needed to purchase Apple Care for this new replacement however I had used all of my savings & retirement to sustain life for me and my family that there was nothing for Apple Care.  If it weren't for my church and family I am not sure what I would do during the 18 months of no income while waiting for a decision only to receive an appeal until I findly stood in front of an Administrative Law Judge who heard my case and granted me disability.  Besides there was no way I could ask anyone for money to purchase a warranty for a top of the line laptop while the country was falling off an economical cliff.
I broke down and called Apple Support and was told that I qualified for technical assistance regarding the upgrade to Lion a few weeks ago.  The tech on the phone had me run some disk utility tests and had me repair permissions which she said could be the cause of the problem.  I willingly went along with her in hopes that this was indeed the fix.  However, within 10 minutes of hanging up the phone my MBP began to drop it's wireless connection to my new HP printer and also the Internet.  Hence my question above is what I am really looking to have answered!  What is the fix to this problem that so many people are having issues with?  I couldn't afford to purchase Apple Care back in 2010 and I can't afford to purchase a new 2011 machine today if that truly is the fix!
I will be disabled for the remainder of my life and I have grown dependent upon my computer to stay in touch with friends and colleges from work.  I worked for the IT Group at Wynn Resorts and I can say that the type of service Appple is providing it's customers is not what I learned over the past 25 years with Mr. Wynn.  Why can't Apple get the simple concept that it's customers are it's life line and keeps them in business.  I need help and I don't know what to do nor where to turn.  It would be different if Apple acknowledged the issue and said they were working on it however they aren't.  I plead to Apple to help me fix my notebook so I can stay connected to the outside world vs. couped up inside my home.
    Best Regards,
    Scott Leavitt

I am simply lookig for some help not an argument.  I am not an RF specialist however have setup a few wireless networks in my tenure at Wynn Resorts.  I fully agree that wireless networking is an art and a science however the powers that be in Network Land have toughted wireless networking is the easiest and quickest way to get two computers to talk with one another.  As I previously said I have already turned one (1) MBP in for this problem and Apple decided to replace it because they could not fix the problem with my particular MBP.  This MBP was running Leopard when the problems started
I am having a hard time believeing that there are several other devicces in my home that depend on a wireless network to operate and my MBP is the only one having an issue.  I took this a step further and decided to see what would happen if I tried to connect wirelessly via Fusion.  In Windows 7 I am able to print and scan to my hearts content without any issues.  I am able to browse the internet as much as I want.  I close Fusion and try to connect to my printer via wireless and nothing.
In order to get Apple to help do I need to get a Network Analyzer and capture packets when I have these problems?  Out of the 1000 + posts is there a consolidation of which answer is the best?  BTW I am accessing the internet via a wireless connection using Fusion and Windows 7.
In response to Linc's comments, I will look at the router specifications however I did not qualify that these devices are not using the wireless connection at the same time.  Right now I would guess there are maybe two (2) or three (3) at the most that are actively transmitting / receiving information. --  Thanks

  • IOS 6.0.1 - Problems with certificate based authentication on wireless access point

    Hi all
We are using iPad 2 as order terminals in our shops for about 5 months. Some of the iPads (the first who entered the field) started to cause problems now. These iPads are no longer able to keep long-term connection to the wireless access point in our stores. After selecting the SSID a successful authentication using the stored EAP-TLS certificate is performed (this can be seen in the log files of our wireless controller and by the IP adress that is given by DHCP). But within seconds the affected iPads opening up a captive portal page (empty, without contents) and separates the connection to the SSID after a short time again.
Affected are currently only iPads 2 with iOS 6.0.1, which were staged about 5 months ago. The newer devices with iOS 6.1+ connect without problems and open no captive portal page. The first cases occurred on the last Wednesday. Before that everything worked without difficulty. No modifications took place on the security structure.  The numbers of affected devices increased until all iOS 6.0.1 were affected.
Access to other SSIDs (without use of certificates, by entering a key) for the devices is still possible (the devices does not open an captive portal page). The DHCP scope is not used up, so there are enough IP addresses available.
"Newer iPads" with an iOS of 6.1+ are are showing no problems on the same wireless access point, where the older devices are rejected. New and old devices use the same certificates and authentication mechanisms.
In the analysis of the issue, it turned out that  the problem can be solved by an update to iOS 6.1.3. Subsequently, the iPads will be able to rebuild a connection with the access point, without a captive portal page.
Since the bandwidth is very narrow dimensioned in our stores, the communication of the iPads was severely restricted. Thus, the iPads are for exampleare accessible for the APNS but can not find iOS updates or check for their availability.
A comprehensive update to iOS 6.1.3 is currently excluded.
Does anyone knows this issue? What else can be done (except from updating)?

I will answer my own question in case it helps anyone else.
It would "seem" the ios 6 devices try the proxy and if that is not working they resort to the def gateway.
To Fix I did the following:
Brocade WIFI network has IPS and Advanced Firewall rules that seemed to be tthwarting some traffic, the iphones would then try the default gateway and be blocked at the FW.
I disabled the IPS and the Advanced Firewall Settings on the wifi as they are redundant to our main IPS and firewall that all traffic flows through anyway.  I will tune it later, but when the CEO is demanding a fix "**** the security, full speed ahead"
Created some rues on the firewall to allow...
    - IMAP-SSL (port993) outbound
    - SMTPS (port 465) to yahoo servers outbound
    - tcp port 587 to yahoo servers outbound
    - https to akamai servers
Most http and https goes through the proxy as it should, BUT...
It seems that the akamai traffic allways ignores the wifi proxy settings and just heads straight for the default gateway.  I suspect there is a bug in the icloud app?
    Hope this helps someone else.

  • Wireless Connection Issues with Macbook Pro

Maybe this is an OSX issue, but I'm not too sure.  I'm trying to set up a wireless access point through my school's internet, but I'm having some issues.  They provided information on how to set up the router, so I did just that.  However, when I connect and try to visit a webpage, I keep getting "Wi-Fi has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.....(don't remember the rest) and will not be able to connect to the Internet."
I'm using the Linksys WRT54G v6.0 and I set up the network to the school's liking: disabled DHCP (so users are forced to talk to campus in order to connect) and enabled MAC filtering.  My computer and router MAC addresses are registered with the school so I can access the internet.  Ethernet works just fine on my computer, but I would like to be able to connect my iPhone and iPad to WIFI while I'm at my place.
I feel like the problem has to do more with my computer than the router since I've had these issues on different routers with other Macbooks while my friend's PC's worked just fine to connect.
I contacted the school's IT, but they won't help me when it comes to personal routers.  Oddly, there is a separate IT for residence that offers help, but they're closed for the day.
    Any suggestions?

Nope I'm not trying to tether.  I would like to be able to use a wifi connection on my mac and other devices.  I've gotten by so far just hooking up my mac to the ethernet port, but that requires me to be in my room.  I know its possible since there a bunch of networks nearby (locked of course), but I just can't figure out how to get mine working.
I'm living in an apartment across the street from campus that is sort of school-owned...well its private but the internet service is provided by the campus since only students live here.  So we have to register anything that we want to use on the school's network.  On campus I can use wifi on my mac or iphone.  Its troubling how I can use the ethernet cable just fine, but when I connect it to my router (which I registered through the school as well)...nothing.  Technically this should be working easily - but maybe you're right on the network security accessability...or maybe my router is old...or my mac doesn't like my router?  I've had this problem before during my undergrad years except I was dealing with a cable provider and not the school.
Maybe I should just make friends with my neighbors and find out how they set up theirs haha.

  • Determining which wireless access point a computer is connected to?

Apologies if this is posted in the wrong forum...
I am working in a large open space where there are multiple overlapping wireless access points -- not Airports but from another vendor. Unfortunately, several computers are experiencing wireless performance and dropout issues. I think the problems may be because the laptops (both PCs and Macs) are connecting to a more distant access point across the open space which is more "line of sight" than the closer access point. We can't confirm this theory, however, because I can't pinpoint which access point we're connecting to. This is possible with a PC, but I can't find such a piece of software for my PowerBook. Is anyone aware of such a utility?
    Thanks so much.
    Brita

Air Traffic Control widget. Search the download section for this useful widget. This widget lists all wi-fi access points, shows what channel each one is on, what the signal strength is and some vendor information.
Whichever access point you are connected to is listed in italic on the list. I like the fact that it is a widget as it makes it very easy to access.

  • Virgin Broadband wireless connection issues

    Hi guys,
I have setup a wireless network in my house and have a virgin broadband optical router. I have connected a belkin wireless access point to this router.
The problem is that my macbook pro refuses to connect to the network. I had this issue when trying to connect via ethernet as well. I cannot seem to get anything to work. I have tried DHCP, DHCP manual, manual connections, with DNS, without DNS, there doesn't seem to be anything that works right now.
I get four green lights when I run the Network Diagnostics application and cannot get it to budge past that.
    Any thoughts?

    Hey BDAqua,
Thanks for the welcome. Nice to know someone cares!
I don't think it is an IP issue as both connect to the WLAN fine and have the address 192.168.2.xxx for each machine. The Wireless Access Point is seperate to the router so there'll be two IP addresses surely?
As I stated in the initial message I have tried using the DNS settings of the connecting laptop with the one that doesn't connect and it didn't make any difference.
I've tried to find out the IP address that the router is using but to no avail. Netstat gave me diddly.
I think it is a connection protocol mismatch which is really annoying.
Any thoughts on how to find out the router's IP address? That could be a start no?
    Cheers
    Charlie

  • Using Mac as Wireless Access point

If i set up the MAC to be a Wireless Access point, via the Sharing option in System Preferences, it works fine if i am trying to connect a PC, other MAC or iPhone to the internet, but devices such as Nintendo DS or Kindle fail (these devices work OK on other wireless networks) to connect they recognise the Wireless network OK but fail to connect and i have tried the basic configuration with no security and it still fails.
What am i doing wrong please?
    Thx

  • Wireless access is disabled

Hi. I have a weird issue with the S206 series, that the wireless access keeps being disabled on startup, and when the computer comes out of hibernation. When I press F7 to enable wireless access, everything works fine.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    hi Spector2000,
    Can you check under services.msc
Make sure that all wireless services are started and set to automatic.
Then check if the issue was fixed
    If not
Also try uninstalling and Reinstalling the Wireless Driver and Lenovo Energy Management Driver
    Get the drivers here http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&DocID=HT073627
    Hope this helps

  • Various wireless connection issue

Hi, i am Drei. one of the technical support of HP for Mac computers / OS  Let's name the routers that have issues with the connection or even declining the printer to gain connectivity to it 1. Xfinity from comcast2. Arris from time warner3. Linksys, either a personal router (w/ smart access)4. Hitron technologies from canada ISP's Let's begin with xfinity router You have the get the router's IP address first ex: 10.0.0.1 (for mac this is under the network preferences under the advance and TCP/IP tab) Username : adminPassword : password 1. Access the GUI (Graphical user interface) of the router using whatever web browser you have2. Get to the "Gateway"3. Click "Connection"4. Click "WIFI"                Note: You have to check if you see something that says 2.4GHz and 5GHz If does, your router is a dual band router and you will need to change the SSID of the 5GHz to separate the mix band / Frequency in the radio radius.   How to change it? Click the "edit" on the 5GHz channel / Freq Then add other characters on the SSID ex. SSID : "HPTechDrei" to "HPTechDrei-5GHz"Then look for the option that says "SAVE" or "Apply" (This doesnt apply on XFINITY alone, it also applies to the entire routers with dual band capabilities)     If you have a single band router which only has a 2.4GHz freq (XFINITY), Just make sure that the router is on AUTO Channel not on 1, 2,3,4, etc. Why? this is to NOT to exhaust the router and to avoid any problems (in a long period of time)   Next step: Go to "GATEWAY" again and select "FIREWALL" and select "CUSTOM" and again save the settings or apply the settings       Note: Do not put any CHECKS on the check box  Let's move on to the next step: Let's make this short, Bottom line is to get to the wireless settings of the printer and select "RESTORE NETWORK DEFAULTS" (This applies for printers that have front panel guides) This is the time you either connect the printer in so many ways such as via Auto wireless connect using HP utility, USB SOW using USB cable and HP Utility, Stand alone Wireless setup Wizard, or the advance part via Ad-HOC and accessing the Embedded web server of the Printer (Same as a router GUI) Last is just to readd the printer under the system preferrence for Mac  This is it for now. XFINITY Business router, it has a different method to make the printer connected or even for the Mac to see the printer in the NETWORK  If you have problems you can call 1800-474-6836 to get help (You are lucky enough if the agent who gets your call is knowledgeable about router access and configs), if i am available on the floor to help the agent who has gotten your call or email me at [email protected] As much as i want to put all of the tips and tricks here for the router configuration, it would take me days to write it all down. Cheers mates

    Steve,
Thanks for the quick reply. I have checked the logs on all our devices with AP's connected and found no reference to BPDU/STP messages. Is there a better method to discover a loop situation as this event happened on 12/4, last Thursday.
My understanding is that since we use a WLC the ports that the AP's are plugged into should have this configuration:
    interface GigabitEthernet0/1
     description Wireless Access Point
     switchport access vlan XX
     switchport mode access
     mls qos trust dscp
     spanning-tree portfast
However, I just started a project to refresh our access devices and review configs. I found that some people recommend a config like this:
    interface GigabitEthernet0/1
     description WAP
     switchport access vlan XX
     switchport mode access
     mls qos trust dscp
     spanning-tree portfast
     spanning-tree bpduguard enable
Wouldn't using the second port config allow me to identify the problem AP and prevent a potential loop being created due to the port being placed in an err-disabled state upon receipt of a BPDU message?
Could the bridge between the wireless and wired network be caused by a laptop being connected to the wired and wireless networks at the same time? That is a likely scenario here as we have dozens of laptop users in our client base. Any other scenarios that might result in this situation?
    Thanks again.

  • Surface Pro 3 with AIR-AP1042N-N-K9 Wireless Access Point

I am trying to connect two recently purchased Microsoft Surface Pro 3 windows 8.1 tablets to a cisco AIR-AP1042N-N-K9 (firmware 15.2(4)JA1) wireless access point. The tablet asks for the wlan password then displays 'can't connect to network'. I am able to connect to the AP using other Win 8.1 devices using WPA2-Personal + TKIP. The Surface Pro 3s connect to other wlans using other access points.
    Please would you help.

Thank you man that *REALLY* worked!

If it has "k9w8" then it is lightweight. When operating in lightweight you will not be able to telnet/ssh or go to the AP web page.To convert your AP to standalone, please follow the procedure found here:http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/conversion/lwapp/upgrade/guide/lwapnote.html#wp160918-Patrick CroakWireless TAC

  • AC 5.31 not seeing wireless access points

We have a single image that is used for all of Lenovo / IBM laptops, T40, T60, T61, T42, T500. On the T40 I encounter issues with access connections from the get go, it does not see any wireless access points. Also does not seem to be the program managing it as windows wireless networks icon pops up saying wireless networks found, upon clicking on the icon I see quite a few available.I do not see this happening on my other laptops, I have attempted to remove AC and uninstall the wireless lan card only to run into the same issue upon reinstalling it.
    Please help,
    Thanks!

    Hi,
sorry for late quesiton, but how does it looks with the current Access Connection?
I assuem ,you are using XP. Correct?
Please describe this situation a bit more , likewifi driver verison, MTM of the , or at least one affected machine etc.

  • Forgetting WiFi password, and not connecting to wireless access point automatically??

I'm using (until tomorrow when I get a MacBook Pro which HOPEFULLY won't have the same problem) a pre 2007 Macbook which is running Mac OS X 10.5.8. It was previously owned by my brother and passed onto me about 4 months ago. Within that time I've had nothing but problems with the WiFi connection!
The first issue would have to be that if I put the MacBook to "sleep" rather than turning off, it disconnects from WiFi during that process. Fine, that's to be expected. But when I wake it up, it's not only disconnected, but I have to re-enter my WiFi password in order to reconnect. Is there some reason that it will not remember the password through this sleep process? Turning off and on normally works fine, and it connects automatically, but not when it sleeps.
The second problem is equally confusing to my mind. In my house, we have a wireless access point upstairs (we have 3 floors after having our attic converted). All characteristics (name, password etc) are the same on the access point as on the main router downstairs. Every device in our house, included a couple of android phones, a tablet, and two laptops running various versions of Windows, all connect to this wireless access point with no problem at all. None of them have been "set up" to do so, in that they detect it as part of the same network and join it automatically. But for some reason, my MacBook won't do it? At first I would assume that perhaps it's due to the age of my MacBook and maybe some flaw in the old operation system, but my iPhone 4S running iOS 7 doesn't connect to this access point either. Is this some weird security thing that Apple use in their devices??
To make things even more frustrating, the MacBook's issue of remembering the WiFi password means that when I come back downstairs and into range of the main router, it's forgotten the password again and I have to re-enter it to reconnect.
Can some PLEASE offer some kind of assistance? I'm getting a brand new MacBook Pro tomorrow and if it's an OS issue then I assume I won't have it anymore, but I'm desperate to solve this issue one way or another considering this machine will be staying in the family and in this house so will pressumably have the same issues.
Thanks in advance guys! If I've not given enough info, just ask

  • Can I do this with a wireless access point?

When I travel to Mexico on vacation (3-4 four times a year, one of the benefits of being 60+ and retired), I pay $70 for high-speed wireless access in my room.
In the past I've taken a Magic Jack and a regular phone, plugged the MJ into a USB port on my computer and used it to phone back to the states (keeping in-touch with the kids and grandkids).
My new Samsung smart phone connects to my wireless network at home and I make/receive call through the Internet (instead of using My Smart Choice prepaid mobile minutes).
Since the wireless controller in my PC is being used to connect to the wireless network at the Mexico hotel, I can't setup a wireless ad hoc network from it. So, I'm wondering if I can plug a WAP into the Ethernet connection on my PC, set-up a local wireless connection via the WAP device, and then connect my smart phone to the local WAP wireless connection for outgoing and incoming calls?
If this is possible, can someone please recommend a good WAP device to use?

Thanks for the input to my question!
I did find a solution to my issue: my phone has Bluetooth and I connect to PC that way. Once I'm connect to the PC, I can send or receive calls through the wireless network that's attached to the PC. The Bluetooth range isn't as far as I'd like--but it works beautifully well!
I got to say, Samsung phones are really cool! I loved my fir iphone--but for me the Galaxy sII is a better device (and I bought it used on CL--who says old people don't rock!!)
