Wireless adapter speed question

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone else has faced this 'problem'.  I just got the new advanced router from Verizon that supports my 75/75 speed plan.  Wired i'm getting that speed.. sometimes even 80Mbps.  My laptop has a 'g' wireless card so I went and got a (Panda Ultra Wireless N USB Adapter (150Mbps) - 802.11n 2.4GHz.  The link speed on the utility is registering at 74Mbps.  But when I test my speed here on the Verizon test, or a few other sites, i'm not able to get it above 45Mbps.. often it's lower than that.  What confuses me is that the Verizon test is occuring at the same time i'm looking at the utility that tells me it's receiving at 74Mbps..  This adapter supports up to 150 so i'm confused.  I even went as close to almost touching it to the antenna to rule out distance.. but then again.. the utility registers at the full speed...  I just don't know why i'm paying for 75 wireless if I can't achieve it...  or how to actually get that speed.  Has anyone else had to use an adapter.. and if so were you able to get the accurate speed?

This was my first time dealing with such a setup so I have to admit I don't know much about it.. What confused me is that I tested with the Verizon test wired and got more than my 75/75 speed plan.. then I put in the adapter and get only 45/45, when it says it's good for 150.  By 'the utility' I mean the utility included with the adapter that shows speed, ip address, allows you to select the network etc..  I just noticed on the one side it said 'link speed'.. and it was 74Mbps.. which sounds like my paid for speed.. then I test and get 45 so I was stumped.. I wanted to blame the adapter but am confused why it says it's receiving at 74.  I verified the incoming speed to be at least 75 by wiring to the router.. so to me if the router is hitting my computer telling this utility it's at 74, but i'm registering 45.. there's a problem.. UNLESS the utility is telling me the incoming speed TO the router.. and from there i'm only getting 45 from the adapter... anyhow... but to me if it claims 150 I should get the full 75 no problem... I know it's trivial comparing between 45Mbps and 75Mbps...  that's unheard of speed compared to a few years ago.. but then again, the difference in that speed is $10 a month to me.. and everything here being wireless and not wired, it's throwing money away... but thank you for the help and i'll check the other link above and search around more..

  • Intermittent Connection – New Wireless Adapter Nee...

    Hi everyone,
I help an elderly neighbour with her laptop and she has started to hit connectivity problems with her existing set-up. She has been with BT broadband for just over one year, using their Hub v2.0.  Although connection problems have happened before, they are getting worse.
Her laptop is almost seven years old and is running Win XP. She is currently using a NetGear wireless adapter (from the RangeMax range), and it is about five years old. I am guessing that the problem is caused by the hub and the wireless adapter not really 'talking' to each other as nothing else about her set-up has changed.
So, my question is which wireless adapter could she use instead? If you have had this problem and have resolved it I would really appreciate hearing from you.
    Many thanks.

    Short answer:
Try this workaround; despite my own scepticism when first advised about it, this will fix both wifi and ethernet problems; the fact that your HH2 will not connect to your wifi and/or your ethernet connector is related to the HH2’s acknowledged problem with its DHCP table.
Access the Hub and set your wifi channel to non-automatic and select Channel 11.
Save the settings and re-boot the HomeHub and your PC.
Check your performance and that your wifi and/or ethernet connection is working normally, if this works you are OK, if not repeat the cycle and choose, in turn, Channels 9 and 1.
If your line speed is under-performing, it is now very important let the HH run very specifically for the training period uninterrupted (whether you believe that to be 72 hours, five days or ten days is for you to decide). I stress, do NOT reboot or disconnect the HH during that period to enable the exchange and it to establish the optimum speed for the line (during that period you may observe the HH resetting itself during renegotiation - that is normal).

  • Satellite Pro A200-16YT - Wireless adapter card upgrade to 802.11n

Satellite Pro is A200-16YT (PSAE1E) with Windows XP Professional SP3.
I have been trying to increase my existing 54 Mb/s wireless network speed by replacing the existing Atheros AR5007-EG 802.11a/b/g with the faster 802.11n adapter.
The Atheros driver is v9.2.0.439 (04/08/2011) which I believe is the latest. I have tried to install an Azurewave AR5BXB72 (Atheros AR5008) as a replacement, but with no success. As well as trying the standard Windows Wireless set-up, I have used the Atheros Client Utility (ACU) which confirms that the card and driver are installed and enabled, but the radio does not switch on, so no there is no association/connection with any wireless network!
Reinstalling the original AR5007 works without any problems. If anyone has experienced similar problems and/or can offer a solution, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    Thank you MasterG.
I followed the link you posted and you were correct in suggesting that a WLAN card pin assignment was an issue.
On older cards, (before Revision 1.2 of the PCI Express Mini Card Electromechanical Specification), *Pin 20* was +'reserved for future wireless disable signal (if needed)'+, so presumably on my Toshiba Satellite A200, disabling the old AR2007 card was handled by the system software and the Wireless ON/OFF switch.
On the newer adapter cards, Pin 20 is assigned to a *W_DISABLE#* signal which, when low, will disable the radio.
As suggested by other posts, masking Pin 20 on the AR5008 card has prevented the radio from being disabled, and the only small problem with this is the radio can no longer be switched off with the Wireless ON/OFF switch (or with Function+F8).
However, the wireless speed is now 144.4Mbps, enabling BT Infinity broadband download speeds in excess of 30Mbps.
Your assistance is very much appreciated.

  • Having Trouble Connecting To Xbox Live using my router and wireless adapter.

Okay, so this is kinda long but I'll try and speed through. Recently I moved from my old place to a newer place (larger) and before, my old spot worked perfectly, no troubles. Now, eversince i got my internet cable service re-hooked up I've had problems. My internet is fine, that's not the problem. It's my xbox live for my 360. My cable guy pretty much set up my living room with the main router and not my studio office which I keep my 360 in. Instead he told me it would be much easier to just go out and buy a wireless adapter for my PC to recieve the signal from my living room off the main family computer. Well, went out and bought a $80.00 wireless adapter top of the line and it works perfectly, I get the internet really fast. Problem is, my 360 will not connect now. It always says DNS failed. Well here's the problem. I have a Linksys router in my studio office that sits on top of my PC that i have connected to the ethernet of my PC, then in the 2nd or 1st port i have my 360ethernet wire connected to my xbox360. Still it says DNS failed. Shouldn't my router be getting the signal from my Wireless adapter that it's receiving from the living room? It's connected through the same computer yet it doesnt connect. It finds my I address, and it finds the network adapter yet it always fails my DNS. I've tried evern switching the xbox360 ethernet to the main ethernet port on my pc and that just makes me fail the IP address test. I need help guys. My wireless adapter for the pc is a Belkin but my router is a linksys and not sure if the 360 just doesnt recognize it or not. Is there settings I'm missing or something? Please help!!!
    The Burninator...

On your 360 if u getting an error msg DNS failed, you can login to your router setup page and go to status tab, not the Static DNS1 and DNS2 numbers and u can give a static dns to your 360. its will resolve ur issue.

  • No Wireless Adapter Found in Vista on MacBook Pro with Boot Camp

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro for which I recently installed Boot Camp. After installing Boot Camp 2.0 as well as after updating to Boot Camp 2.1, while all other drivers appear to have installed fine, Windows Vista (64) does not detect a wireless adapter.
Is there a specific driver I can download and install?

A better place to ask your question would probably be the Boot Camp forum.

  • Basic connection speed questions for WRT54GS v.4

Hi, and sorry, I am something of a network numpty (though I understand my pc pretty well)
My router only ever transfers data at 54mbps (according to the wireless network connection icon in the system tray) - so, what has happened to the speed booster increasing it to 108mbps?  Is 54mbps the  best I can get?
Is this 54mbps in each direction = 108 total?!
And, how does this then limit my broadband downloading speeds?  I have a 20Mb connection, and get around 17Mb speeds on my desktop pc which is connected via an ethernet cable to the router.  The laptop, connected by wireless, gets 6Mb max - is this being limited by the router's capabilities?

First of all, Speedbooster is a software enhancement to the router.  It does not change the basic wireless g connection speed of 54 Mbps.  The Speedbooster enhancement is supposed to give you a 10 to 20% boost in data throughput.  In order to get the full benefit, both the router and your wireless adapter must have Speedbooster.  If only the router has it, you still get a benefit, but not as much.
Under ideal lab conditions (read:  not in an ordinary home)  a wireless g system can deliver as much as 20 to 25 Mbps of data.  Most home users get substantially less.   Most home users are happy if they can get 50% of their wired speed  (in your case, 50% of the 17 Mbps).  Some have achieved as much as 80% of their wired speed.
Its possible that 6 Mbps might be all that your system will be able to do, but I would suggest that you try a few adjustments and see if you can improve it.  Here are my suggestions:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal, and this can give a slight performance gain.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. If your current network is not listed, enter its info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.
If you still have problems, try the following:
For wireless g routers, try setting the "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps. For wireless n routers, try setting the "n Transmission Rate" to 162 Mbps, and the (wireless g) "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps.
If you still have trouble, download and install the latest firmware for your router. After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
Hope this helps.  Please let me know your results.

  • Double Band Wireless adapter

    Guys.,
Do I need a Double Band Wireless adapter in order to see or connect to 5GHz broadcasting?
Cause i have a WRT610n but I,m not able to see 5ghZ broadcasting, only 2.4ghz, and the wireless card in my laptop is internal and is only g/and auto.....
    Another question..
Is This router suposed to be so hot? It's almost 100 F degree..normal work, Only one Pc wired and vonage modem connected to it.
At this very moment there's no wireless client connected to it.
    Thanks

Yes. You need an adapter which supports the 5 GHz band. A 802.11g adapter won't connect to the 5 GHz band. That only operates on 2.4 GHz.

  • 802.11n: How can I force a wireless adapter to primarily associate to a 5Ghz radio and not to the 2.4Ghz one?

    Hi experts,
I am playing with a Cisco 1142 AP. I have same SSID configured on both dot0 and dot1 interfaces. I have a test laptop and it has a Linksys dual-band wireless adapter. However the card always try to associate on the 2.4GHz. It will only associate with the 5GHz radio when I shut down the dot 0 interface. The laptop is running Windows XP SP3 and I'm using the windows wireless Zero configuration to configure the wireless. The following is the AP's configuration:
    dot11 ssid Guest-Wireless
       authentication open
       guest-mode
    interface Dot11Radio0
    no ip address
    no ip route-cache
    ssid Guest-Wireless
    antenna gain 0
    channel 2412
    station-role root
    bridge-group 1
    bridge-group 1 subscriber-loop-control
    bridge-group 1 port-protected
    bridge-group 1 block-unknown-source
    no bridge-group 1 source-learning
    no bridge-group 1 unicast-flooding
    bridge-group 1 spanning-disabled
    interface Dot11Radio1
    no ip address
    no ip route-cache
    ssid Guest-Wireless
    antenna gain 0
    dfs band 3 block
    channel dfs
    station-role root
    bridge-group 1
    bridge-group 1 subscriber-loop-control
    bridge-group 1 port-protected
    bridge-group 1 block-unknown-source
    no bridge-group 1 source-learning
    no bridge-group 1 unicast-flooding
    bridge-group 1 spanning-disabled
Is it something I can control through the AP or it's the laptop/wireless adapter's own behavior so I either need a new card or update it with a new firmware?
    Thanks!

    Leolaohoo,
Thanks for quick reply! My laptop is just next to the AP. There is nothing but air between the laptop and the AP.
I actually did speed tests on both 2.4 and 5 (with 2.4 disabled of course) and I got pretty much the same result: 46Mbps MAX. I don't know if it's the linksys n card is limiting the capacity of the AP. But for now I just want it to jump on 5GHz instead of 2.4GHz...
    Thanks,

  • Wireless transfer speed is hopeless!

    Hi,
New BT customer here, after being with aol for nearly 10 years I thought it was time for a change. Why-o-why?
I used to have a netgear 834g router which worked fine, signal would drop a touch upstairs and broadband 8mb with aol, but they could not offer me an all-in package, Wireless transfer speed of 54mbps with a netgear wv111v2 g adapter.
So I decided to change to BT(07/06/2010) to have it all under one roof, Total Broadband they call it, Total **** I call it.
Since the changeover my wireless transfer speed upstairs will be lucky to achieve 24mbps and the signal is shocking ranges from low to can't be bothered. So, I bought a new Belkin 'N' F5D8053v6 adapter to achieve best range and speed. No change in fact, it is worse than the old adapter, Dodgy adapter maybe? No, because I then bought the singing n' dancing Netgear N 300 mbps Wn111v2 adapter and it is still rubbish 24mbps max.
I am not a computer nerd, but I can set up a network after going through all this before, having two kids who are computer nuts sees to that.
I have changed/reinstalled everything, changed the channels; WEP, WPA-Sk; refitted old adapter, sat on top the BT hub; scoured forums, all to no avail the signal and transfer rate is still the same.
Off to India it was, to have the mis-fortune of speaking to one of the most rude, abrasive customer service personel. They would not listen to what I told them, accused me of entering the wrong password; ignored me on the phone whilst talking to someone else, done some checks remotely whilst I was still on line and said the speed was the best I could achieve, after an endless amount of time on the phone, It was the brick wall with open doorway between me and the hub 5 yards away causing the drop. All non believable.
Well I have just come off the phone and it's still the same, I have had to change the channels 5 times since to try and get a constant signal.
The BT hub say tranfer rate of 130mbps when I only have 24mbps according to my adapter, so who is lying?
My line is fine, I live less than 2 miles form exchange and if I connect through ethernet I get 6.5mb, wireless it drops to 2.5mb upload 0.4mb.
Please BT come and take this useless equipment away and I will go back to aol's basic kit. I won't hold it against you, but it is far superior in every way.

herbie9 your own post said that and I quote "I used to have a netgear 834g router which worked fine, signal would drop a touch upstairs and broadband 8mb with aol, but they could not offer me an all-in package, Wireless transfer speed of 54mbps with a netgear wv111v2 g adapter." Like Sweeney47 says use that and just configure it for BT access. Plenty of links in here to help with that. The only other answer for you will be to use a powerline adpater pair to another WAP upstairs and that will give you the signal downstairs and up. should be able to pick up a cheap WAP for under £20 and the powerline adpaters vary but I have seen them for £30 and up. Quality counts on the powerline though. Must be an enviromental issue regards wireless signal.

  • Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Device List Not Finding Windows 8 Wireless Adapter

I recently upgraded my Wi-Fi router to an EA3500 and am controlling it using Smart Wi-Fi running on a wired Windows 7 machine.
So far, I have been able to add devices to the network without issue and each of those connections works fine.  All, except my TV, have been Windows 7 based machines.  Smart Wi-Fi Device List has been able to "see" each device and I have been able to add them to that list as well.
I am attempting to add a Windows 8 desktop computer to the network which is using a external USB wireless adapter.  That computer can see and connect to the network through the EA3500 and the connection seems to work fine.  The only issue is that its adapter does not show up in the Device List.
    My questions:
    1)  Does the Device List do anything else besides showing a list of devices I chosen to add to my network?
    2) How do I get my Windows 8 wireless adapter to show up in the Device List?
    Thanks In Adance!

I would like to chime in here too. I also have the same issue as described on an older Mac desktop. The ethernet port has failed so it connects only via the AirPort wireless. My issue is IMPORTANT because until this devices shows up on the Device List I cannot apply the Parental Controls. Joining Orloldman for an answer... (Thanks!)
    Try the following:
    1.       Disconnect the computer from the wireless network
    2.       Remove wireless network profile on your computer
    3.       Reboot the computer and power cycle the router
    4.       Reconnect to the wireless network
    5.       Check if the computer shows up on the device list.
If it is still not showing, reset and reconfigure the wireless router.

I have to go into belkin wireless adapter setup everytime i reboot the machine.
i am running 10.3.9 using the above adapter and it is doing my head in, any help would be gratefully apprieciated.

    Hi David White,
Alternatively, after password recovery you can modify the configuration to be what you want, and then issue:
       write memory
to save the configuration.  You can then verify that your changes have been saved to the startup config by issuing:
       show startup-config"
The only good thing is that when I switch off a router it erase configuration except my new password which I created after password reset. Everything else is getting vanished (ADSL settings, DHCP, routing ) everything. Even new admin accounts I created.
Well have a question to your above comments. I am new in Cisco so please put as much detail as you can for me to understand. When you say modify configuration do you mean to go to Cisco CP Express graphical interface and then connect router to hyper terminal and execute above commands?
Why router doesn't remember this anyway. There must be some option to change in configuration to make thing permanent when I hit apply changes in Cisco CO Express otherwise it is pointless to heve it.
    Phillip
    write memory
    is
    copy running-config startup-config"
Can't this be done via Cisco CP Express or set up router to copy this every time I change this in graphical interface rather going to command line to achnoledge it?
I understand your concern about this router and somebodie's configuration details as you want things to be un-used when you buy them - true. ADSL details belongs to the shop which sold me the router so that is why I don't make a big problem about this. We take most of hardware from this shop and have discount and many good deals with them so I think they have been just testing it and forgot to erease their config. It might be that someone has returned router to the shop and they have repaired it and tested it.
I hope this is a normal behaviour of this router as I have option to replace it in case this is a fault.
Could you please write me step by step guide how can I make changed options stay permanently on router?
    thank you
    Dragan

  • No wireless adapter after clean install

I have an X61 and did a clean install of Windows Vista Ultimate and now my internal wireless adapter card is not showing in my device manager.  It worked before the install, so I know the hardware is there.  What do I do?

Inside your device manager, do you have Yellow Question Marks next to other devices or any issues with your chipset drivers.
The WiFi adapter drivers are useless if the chipset that supports the socket, that supports the WiFi card are malfunctioning or missing.
Hopefully, you aren't being encumbered by user mode privileges and you've thoroughly executed the system in manager / Admin mode and experienced the same issues.

  • H520s Wireless adapter issues

Okay, So I'm having some issues with my H520s. The wireless adapter has been quite dodgy for the past month or so, but after using lenovo rescue to get it back to 'original condition' it's completely stopped working. I've looked through device manager and there's no mention of a wireless adapter, and any attempt to install drivers has done nothing.
Before this, I'd have to use the Network Tasks> Repair network (or simmilar) after every startup in order to get wireless working.
    I have no files on the computer I need to keep, so formatting it to fix it is fine. I just want my wireless back ;_;
If you need any more information, please ask, and I'll get back to you as soon as I see it. Hope you can help ^^
    EDIT: Oh, also,
Said computer is running Windows 8, preinstalled. (Listed as 'Win 8 MM' on the side, incase that means anything special)

    Hi llharry,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
If your device manager is not showing your Wifi under device manager / Network adapters.
It may be having issue with the driver and may show as Network Controller or unknown device with
     a yellow sign on it.
If not then It may had been disabled inside BIOS.
Try Booting into BIOS by shutting down the computer and turning it back On and tapping F1 .
Once Inside BIOS look under Configuration TAB and or under Network setup
Look for an option saying Wireless lan or Wireless adapter.
Make sure it is enabled then save and exit.

  • W510 Wireless Adapter: getting kicked out of most wireless networks

    Hi Everyone,
I'm running a W510 with Windows 8 on it. I have an extremely annoying issue with my wi-fi network network card and I have no clue where it's coming from.
The wi-fi networks at my home and office work perfect and I haven't had a single issue with them. I recently started travelling a lot and tried using wi-fi on various locations such as open wi-fi on airports, secured networks in hotels, cafes, guest homes etc. Most of them are not workable. Here's what's happening:
I can usually connect the first time I try, but after a few minutes, and hour top I get kicked out of the network or end up with "Limited" access. When I try to reconnect the it goes into and endless "connecting" state. Trying to disconnect hangs the pane and no actions are possible until I:
    1. Restart the explorer.exe process, which it "Not responding"
    2. Disable and Enable the wireless adapter though the Device Manager
After that in case of some networks I can connect again for a few minutes, but then I all repeats all over OR I cannot connect back at all.
I have tried using A LOT of networks in various places, and I'd say with about 80-85% I experience the described issue.
I case of some of the networks I had a chance to connect by wire and they were working perfectly. Often I have other people around with me and of course I'm the only one facing the issue, it's not that I have really back luck for wi-fi networks. Plus my phone connects to majority of them without issue.
In many cases when I switch networks I need to manually run ipconfig /renew and ipconfig /flushdns, before being able to connect to anything.
The wifi adapter is a Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 AGN on a Lenovo W510. The driver version is 14.2.1.3. I've seen 15.x version available for download from both Intel and Lenovo sites, but when trying to install it I got info, that I already have a newer version of the driver.
Uninstalling the driver and letting windows reinstall it does not solve the issue.
I ran out of options on what to check and how to debug this further. What are your thoughts on this?
    Thanks,

    Hi, MikeZyc
I've seen this issue on many machines running Windows 8 with Intel wireless adapters. One fix that has worked more often than not is to navigate to Control Panel ► Programs and Features and uninstall the Intel Management Engine Driver. This driver seems to cause the wireless connectivity to get lost or not connect at all in Windows 8. Try uninstalling that, then restarting the computer and see if any improvement is made.
    Best of luck,
    Adam
